Cinema allows me, in less than two hours, to discover the stories of people who have left their mark on society through their ideas, actions and creations; that’s why I love the biographical genre so much. On this occasion, the film ‘Man with an H’ is based on the personal experiences of a Brazilian artist called Ney Matogrosso. The film is based on the biographical book Ney Matogrosso and was released in Brazilian cinemas in 2025 before coming to Netflix; I watched it a few months ago.

‘Man with an H’ traces Ney’s journey and transformation from childhood through to adulthood, now in his eighties, depicting difficult times and repression, his personal crises and moments of liberation; all these events made him a man ahead of his time who used art to achieve his freedom.

Even as a child, he showed a penchant for music and stood out as different, as he was a boy abused by his own father, both physically and psychologically; There are scenes from his childhood depicting his daily life that moved me deeply; one of them was when he was forced to fetch water in buckets for his home: his father made him supply water for the whole family without rest, on the pretext that this would make him muscular and a ‘real man’, until he eventually fainted from exhaustion. 😪 Beatings took the place of loving physical contact.

When he reached his teens, he enlisted in the military, and it was there that he found his first love and came to terms with his sexual orientation; it was such a difficult time that his own father wanted to intervene to get him out of there, but this gesture did not break his spirit and he decided to stay. When his service ended, he didn’t return home, but went off to live on his own and try his luck with various jobs.

Living on his own, he explored crafts, wig-making and artistic make-up; moreover, music brought him back to his true self, and it was there that the idea arose to form a band with him as lead vocalist, which catapulted them to fame for being something different. Here, Ney was the arranger, image designer and make-up artist; as they grew, he delegated responsibilities but retained his rebellious streak in his body language. Ultimately, the band split up due to the social and political pressure exerted on them by the media, which sought to censor them, and Ney re-emerged as a solo artist.

As his success continued and grew, his family problems improved; his financial standing and the support he provided for his family earned him his father’s respect and love (a love conditional on money), and whilst, in my opinion, this shouldn’t be the case, it was what helped his father to see him as an artist and a successful man, and Ney forgave his father.

During this period, Ney explored their sexuality; they had relationships with women and men separately, as well as in groups, and were in a long-term relationship with three men. All that sexual energy and freedom carried over onto the stage, creating a unique, striking and enigmatic performance; they could be whatever they wanted, and their transformation was capable of setting the imagination of those watching them on stage alight; her outfits were sensual, blending elements of animals, feathers, beaks, leather and paint that made her appear genderless; she could be both masculine and feminine at once, a wild animal or a human being simultaneously; her hip movements were equally striking, and her dances evolved from being suitable for all audiences to catering specifically to a select group of adults. It was the 1970s, and society was not yet open-minded about homosexuality, sex and erotic dancing.

Ney tried everything when it came to sex, alcohol and drugs; he brought these excesses onto the stage, letting himself go and opening up to such an extent that his emotions would drive him to orgasm. His live performances must have been wild, but thanks to his physical expression he managed to fill concert halls and become an artist who never went out of fashion in his native language, Portuguese.

He loved with all his heart, had his setbacks and experienced deep grief at the death of one of his partners from HIV, whom he cared for until the very end, feeling guilty for not having contracted the virus himself.

In conclusion, Hombre con H does justice to the life experience of Ney Matogrosso, a person for whom art provided freedom; his emotions sought out art not as a choice, but as a means of survival.

As for the portrayal of Ney’s character, actor Jesuíta Barbosa’s performance is, without a doubt, exceptional and key to the film’s success; it is worth noting that the production has the approval and direct involvement of Ney himself, who appears in one of his final concerts, thereby ensuring the authenticity of every chapter told.

Wow, how interesting the life of this artist, I don't know him and the first time I read about this film, I'm surprised that he had such a varied life and was very brave because at that time I guess it was very difficult to accept his sexuality
