It is a science fiction drama film, where artificial intelligence plays an important role in the story, apart from the visual settings.
When I started watching it, my first impression was that it dealt with religious themes, you know, a flood and the end of the world, but it goes further than that. Its focus is on the human experience: what is it that we cannot create, if the time comes for us to become extinct? If the world is flooded as it is in the film, scientists have been preparing for years to colonize other planets, so if it's not about losing the place where we live, what is the story about?

If you thought about survival, the answer is yes and no. Let me explain: for more than half an hour, I felt like I was drowning with the main characters, a mother and her son who are trying to save themselves from the great flood. They run, climb stairs, and are always trapped in the apartments of their building. The boy has a serious illness that increases the anguish of his mother and the viewer. On the other hand, the mother is a valuable asset to humanity, as she is a scientist who created a virtual reality system, and without her, humans would become extinct.

As the film progresses, repetitions of scenes begin to appear, seemingly the same, however, with each repetition something changes, a simple decision changes the course of history. I thought it was déjà vu, and when I realized the repetitions, I imagined that everything was spinning in a time spiral. After seeing a loop with no way out, the story became tedious, I got tired, I got exhausted, and I almost stopped watching, but my intuition told me that the director wanted to communicate something else.
The struggle to survive, the mother exhausted from saving her son, when the moment came to save herself, something happened. It was inexplicable to know why it didn't end. It was when I was near the end that I understood the message. The film was not about religion, hope, or time. Its main theme, in my perception, is learning and bonds such as love. No one is born knowing how to be a good person or how to be the best mother. There is no manual for that. For everything in life, we have to make mistakes in order to learn. True learning comes through repetition.

That brings me back to the beginning, when I mentioned that the great flood reminds us of what makes us human, because the human species will avoid extinction by traveling to other worlds, cloning the human body or replacing its parts, copying memories and recollections, but they will never be able to create our feelings and the bonds that unite us to other humans in a laboratory. Love cannot be constructed; it is born and felt, even without "blood ties."
I recommend watching this movie, which is available on Netflix (year 2025), carefully and with patience. Keep in mind that it is stressful and may cause anxiety, but if you understand the message, it will be worth it.
