Welcome 💖 Bienvenidos

Ángela believes that doing a favour for her neighbours – such as inviting them to dinner – could resolve the problems and tensions in her own home, and that it is actually a good way to foster a friendly relationship between them and their neighbours. This idea came to Ángela, a woman who is experiencing intimacy issues in her marriage and wants to discover her neighbours’ secret in this regard, as the noises from their lovemaking give them away and irritate her husband, who is unable to get a good night’s sleep.

The entire dinner – and, in fact, the whole atmosphere of the film – takes place in the flat shared by Angela and Joe, a cosy space that allows them to share and reveal their personal intimacies. Although at first I thought it was a nice setting, halfway through the film I felt like running away, as if I were suffering from claustrophobia in that flat; I suppose my feelings are the result of the very same anxiety experienced by the characters, who, in addition to being confined to a single setting for 95 per cent of the film, are limited to a maximum of just four fully developed characters – that is, the two married couples. The married couple, Angela and Joe, and their neighbours who came over for dinner, Piña and Hawk.
From the outset, it’s clear that there are problems in Angela’s marriage; she seems tense and her husband is suffering from stress. The two argue over the slightest thing. Keen to find a solution, Angela organises a dinner with her neighbours, who appear to be happy and successful; they take care of their personal image and enjoy their sexuality.

At first, there was tension and humour when the couples met, but little by little they began to open up and get to know one another honestly. Emotions were running high for Ángela, and just as they were about to say goodbye, apologies began to flow for their annoying behaviour in their respective flats. They learnt that Piña’s marriage – played by Penélope Cruz – involves hosting intimate parties with other friends, which caught their attention even more and led them to start asking questions on the subject.
Piña (Penélope Cruz) is a sexologist; she comes across as an open-minded woman with no taboos who seeks to help others find their own happiness through sexuality. She is attractive and possesses a great deal of sexual energy. Her partner is Hawk, a retired firefighter dealing with the emotional fallout from his former job and the loss of his ailing wife. They support one another and help each other overcome their traumas.

For her part, Ángela is a designer who expresses her passion for interior design, but feels undervalued by her husband; she withdraws into herself and is unable to speak openly about her needs with her husband, Joe, a frustrated musician who works as a music teacher and suffers from low self-esteem.
The conclusion of this dark comedy—which evolved into a drama and romance—is that every aspect of our professional lives affects our relationships, and sometimes breaking out of the routine and spending time with others helps us see the problem from a different perspective. Angela and Joe’s relationship, along with that of their guests, went through a rollercoaster of emotions and conflicts that eventually came to a head; for me, as a viewer, it was somewhat stressful and overwhelming, to the point where it ceased to be funny or romantic.
I wasn’t disappointed, but I didn’t feel entirely comfortable either. What I do want to highlight, however, are the performances: the characters fit the plot perfectly, and I found the dialogue very creative and natural. This film should be a great choice to watch as a couple.
