Welcome 💖 Bienvenidos
Welcome 💖 Bienvenidos

Imagine you’re a woman and you’ve been lucky enough to find the perfect man – he’s thoughtful, romantic, passionate and a great cook (bonus points for that 🤣). He’s head over heels in love with you, and you’ve decided to start a new life in the house that used to belong to his parents – the place where he spent his early childhood. It’s far from a conventional home, as it looks like an ancient castle, with vast gardens and a lake at the front. It’s only natural that you feel blessed and happy.
Alex is pregnant and only a few weeks away from giving birth, but she wanted to please her husband Damian, who is a writer, and decides to move into the house that belonged to his parents. At first, Alex isn’t convinced about living in such a large, remote place whilst pregnant, but she wants to adapt for the sake of the family. Damian is an only child, and within minutes it becomes apparent that something about their new home is making him uneasy.

At first, this story doesn’t seem eerie, as we see a normal couple settling into the community, but the setting in which they live is a bit eerie: the large, old house, the forest outside and its remoteness from everything make me start to feel nervous, especially as Alex is about to give birth and Damian sometimes disappears without saying where he’s going or when he’ll be back. To make matters worse, murders and disappearances of women begin to occur in the area – something that hadn’t happened before they moved there.
Alex decides to go out on her own to explore the neighbourhood and starts getting to know the people in the community; everything gives off a bad vibe, from the elderly lady who tries to be friendly to a few beggars. On these walks, she discovers that Damian’s father is alive and in a care home; this man is senile and frequently escapes from the care home to return to his own house.
That’s when it started to strike me as odd that Damian would hide or keep quiet about something as important as his father being alive; at that point, I began to suspect he wasn’t quite as perfect as he seemed. As the film progresses, everything becomes murky. Damian gets up at night and returns covered in dirt; he seems to be sleepwalking, but that’s all, whilst Alex feels unsafe everywhere – at home or in the neighbourhood – as she is the victim of attacks by strangers, despite being pregnant, and is terrified by the unsolved crimes.
Meanwhile, Damian is gradually transforming into a different person; he is no longer the loving, thoughtful man he once was. He seems troubled, has become obsessed with his past and cannot sleep properly; he appears paranoid, careless and becomes irritable. He starts to look like the prime suspect.
By this point in the film, I too was feeling paranoid; everything frightened me – the house, the neighbours, her husband, her father-in-law, and the hidden story of a past that isn’t clarified until the very end. The suspense grew with every passing minute, but the terror was present in every unexpected twist, every muffled sound in the house, and in the characters’ behaviour, because you never knew how they would react.

The background music and sound effects are a key element in creating the sense of terror; even though most of the scenes took place during the day, everything was frightening. The camera angles sometimes gave me the impression that I was being watched and that I was stepping into Alex’s shoes; I even came to feel her anguish. The terror never let up, and just when I thought I’d figured out the plot, the final twist left me speechless and literally with a knot in my stomach; there was a struggle and a way of wrapping up the story that surprised me and left me satisfied. 😁
If you’re a fan of the horror and suspense genres, this film—made in 2024—is for you. This is my first entry in the Halloween Party competition organised by @wiseagent . Thank you very much, and enjoy the film.
