> Esta es una de las mejores películas de acción, ciencia ficción y horror que he visto y sin duda vale la pena verla varias veces, es una película australiana creada en el año 2018 y escrita y dirigida por Leigh Whannell, que yo vi el año pasado. > > Aunque es una película de ciencia ficción no es la típica historia que te hace sentir ese género desde el principio, sino todo lo contrario. Comienza con una pareja de esposos que tienen una linda relación y el hombre se dedica a la mecánica automotriz. Este hombre Gray Trace es una especie de restaurador de carros antiguos y cuando termina uno de sus trabajos va a hacer la entrega del vehículo junto a su esposa en ese momento me doy cuenta de que todo transcurre en un tiempo futuro, hay tecnología avanzada, pero el mundo es algo distópico. Podría ser en un futuro cercano. > >

Sinopsis

> > Gray el mecánico automotor y su esposa tienen una accidente sufriendo heridas leves poco después son asaltados donde ella muere y él queda con una lesión medular grave, al no encontrar los responsables del hecho se sumerge en una depresión e intenta acabar con su vida. Curiosamente, él se considera enemigo de la tecnología, pero uno de sus clientes un billonario le propone usar uno de sus chips en desarrollo para cambiar su vida, en ese momento él se encontraba parapléjico y al cuidado de su mamá, sin otra salida y cegado por el dolor decidí probar porque considera que no tiene nada que perder, firma un contrato de confidencialidad y empieza su prueba con STEM una inteligencia artificial que evoluciona. > > * * * > > Al principio le tiene que ocultar a la policía y a su madre que puede caminar, eso le da una coartada para poder tomar venganza, identifica a los agresores que asesinaron a su esposa los busca uno a uno matándolos de forma brutal, pero hay zonas en las que STEM no funciona y se desactiva dejándolo inmóvil, Gray puede comunicarse con STEM como si fuera otra persona en su cabeza, o como si pasara a ser subconsciente. Esta IA comienza a influir en Gray y le da instrucciones para que consiga un Hacker y elimine los permisos y bloqueos de seguridad. > >

> > Gray va descubriendo que lo que le sucedió no fue un hecho aislado, todo fue planificado para que cayera en una trampa y decidiera usar esa tecnología, así que el protagonista nunca termina de liberarse de su ira y venganza sino que crece. Una vez que es descubierto quiere poner fin al experimento, pero ya no puede, STEM quiere apoderarse de su cuerpo, su conciencia y de todo el sistema. > > ##

Pensamientos finales

> > Es una película que plantea uno de los mayores miedos de la actualidad al usar la inteligencia artificial integrada a nuestro cuerpo, que está pueda apoderarse de nuestro razonamiento y el humano termina por ser manipulado y usado. > > También plantea los posibles riesgos y beneficios de su uso, ya que los grandes proyectos son de soluciones a problemas de salud. Encontrar un equilibrio entre los riesgos, beneficios y dilemas morales y legales es lo que determinará hacia qué lado se mueve la balanza. > > Esta película me hizo pensar que en futuro todos vamos a necesitar una actualización de nuestro cuerpo y mente y que a través de chips lo vamos a obtener porque las personas sienten un vacío que la tecnología les llena con distracciones y el sistema a la larga nos venderán que la única forma de pertenecer al nuevo mundo será actualizándonos. > > Al final la película no me dejó una idea clara, por lo que no puedo decir si quedé contenta o no, tal vez no lo entendí y tendré que verla una segunda vez para observar desde otra perspectiva, pero en líneas generales me sentí satisfecha de las actuaciones, del desarrollo del personaje principal, ya que se comportó como cualquier humano, de los giros inesperados y de mantenerse en suspenso. Nunca dejó de sorprenderme y por eso la recomiendo y le doy un 90 de puntuación. > >

This is one of the best action, sci-fi and horror films I’ve ever seen, and it’s definitely worth watching several times. It’s an Australian film released in 2018, written and directed by Leigh Whannell, which I watched last year.

Although it’s a sci-fi film, it isn’t the typical story that makes you feel like you’re watching that genre from the outset – quite the opposite, in fact. It begins with a married couple who have a lovely relationship; the husband works as a car mechanic. This man, Gray Trace, is a sort of classic car restorer, and when he finishes one of his jobs, he goes to hand over the vehicle alongside his wife. At that moment, I realise that the story is set in the future: there’s advanced technology, but the world is somewhat dystopian. It could be set in the near future.

Synopsis

Gray, the car mechanic, and his wife are involved in an accident, sustaining minor injuries. Shortly afterwards, they are mugged; she dies and he is left with a severe spinal injury. Unable to find those responsible, he sinks into depression and attempts to take his own life. Curiously, he considers himself an enemy of technology, but one of his clients—a billionaire—proposes that he use one of his experimental chips to change his life. At that point, he was paraplegic and being cared for by his mum; with no other way out and blinded by grief, he decided to give it a go because he felt he had nothing to lose. He signs a confidentiality agreement and begins his trial with STEM, an evolving artificial intelligence.

At first, he has to hide the fact that he can walk from the police and his mother; which gives him an alibi to seek revenge. He identifies the attackers who murdered his wife and tracks them down one by one, killing them brutally. However, there are areas where STEM does not work and it deactivates, leaving him immobilised. Gray can communicate with STEM as if it were another person inside his head, or as if it were part of his subconscious. This AI begins to influence Gray and instructs him to find a hacker to remove the security permissions and blocks.

Gray gradually realises that what happened to him was not an isolated incident; it was all planned to lure him into a trap and make him use that technology. Consequently, the protagonist never fully frees himself from his anger and desire for revenge; instead, it grows. Once he is discovered, he wants to put an end to the experiment, but he can no longer do so; STEM wants to take control of his body, his consciousness and the entire system.

Final thoughts

This film explores one of today’s greatest fears: that artificial intelligence integrated into our bodies could take control of our reasoning, leaving humans to be manipulated and exploited.

It also explores the potential risks and benefits of its use, given that major projects are aimed at solving health problems. Striking a balance between the risks, benefits and moral and legal dilemmas is what will determine which way the scales tip.

This film made me think that in the future we’ll all need an upgrade to our bodies and minds, and that we’ll achieve this through chips, because people feel a void that technology fills with distractions; and in the long run, the system will convince us that the only way to belong to the new world is by upgrading ourselves.

In the end, the film didn’t leave me with a clear impression, so I can’t say whether I was pleased with it or not; perhaps I didn’t understand it and will have to watch it a second time to view it from a different perspective. However, overall I was satisfied with the performances, the development of the main character – who behaved just like any human being – the unexpected twists and the way it kept me in suspense. It never ceased to surprise me, which is why I recommend it and give it a score of 90.
