Well, I watched first three-seasons last year, so do not expect me to go in great depth. But, I sincerely think this season deserves a review. And with fourth one already out, I am thrilled and enthusiastic about it. Although, I have just watched one episode by far, but hope to find some time. By the way, this "some time" means a single day. That is the beauty of this season - the thriller keeps you alive, until it is the end.
Basic Introductory Stuff.
Firstly, it is a fictional story about a gentleman burglar - Arsene Lupin. This is a French Netflix series. Basically, the idea is taken from various stuff, such as Maurice Leblanc literature. So the original character dates back to 1900s. Also, the Netflix protagonist - Assane Diop - is a modern character inspired by Lupin, rather than a direct portrayal of the original literary character.
The Plot: Season 1 to 3.
As mentioned earlier, the story begins with Assane Diop and a painful childhood chapter. His father, Babakar, was falsely accused of stealing a valuable necklace belonging to a wealthy family. The accusation, as expected, destroys his life, leaving Assane with troubled and unanswered questions. And of course, there is this sense of injustice i.e. the urge for revenge.
And soon, actually in adulthood, his journey begins. Inspired by the fictional adventures of Arsene Lupin, Assane decides to expose people in gentleman's way. His journey begins with a theft at the Louvre, and this alone was so much fun. Fiction does have its own ways of doing things.
Season 1
The first season, they call it Part 1, introduces us to Assane's world. We see how he plans his operations, studies people and uses their assumptions against them. And always remember this: he is not simply a thief who wants money. He wants answers; and he wants the truth about his father to come out. Of course, things rarely go according to plan, and his personal life also becomes increasingly mixed up in his pursuit of justice.
Season 2
We meet Assane's son, Raoul. Now, Assane had a troubled past, and the worst thing he would want is to see his son facing problems. In this part, things get more complicated. Because game is no longer just about exposing a powerful man. Assane has to protect his family while dealing with the consequences of his own decisions. Moreover, his relationship also gets more complicated, because it is hard to manage being Assane and Lupin at the same time.
Season 3.
By this part, Assan - preferably Lupin - is all famous, more like a notorious figure. And, at this point, he wants to make things right with his family. But, for plot's sake, a mysterious figure from his past draws him into another dangerous scheme. This scheme involves a priceless black pearl. Though, I will never understand why would anyone pay a priceful sum just for a pearl? Anyways, Assane has to be Lupin once again to make things normal later on.
By the end of Season 3, Assane finally turns himself in to the police. But knowing him, do you really think he would surrender without winning? Lol, never! His decision to get himself imprisoned alongside Pellegrini - the man behind his father's downfall - makes the ending even more exciting.
The Pros.
One of the biggest strengths of Lupin is Assane himself. His intelligence, natural charm, cool walks and ability to stay several steps ahead of everyone make the series interesting and entertaining. The way he plans everything, his heists, warning before doing, and manipulating situation according to his needs is top-notch. Moreover, the procedure is explained after the stuff has been done. Then it all starts to make sense, so totally worth it.
The Cons.
Now, I would not say that it is flawless. Because, it has few good flaws. Good? Yes, because what do you expect from a fiction? You can point fingers if it is a non-fiction. So the worst one is: repetition. I think that after two seasons, pattern seems to get repetitive. Assane plans, something unexpected happens, but he has everything under control. And boom!
Still, these flaws do not take away all the fun.
So just sit, watch the show, do be so rational and let Lupin do his magic.
I have high hopes from Part 4, so let us see.
