I'm glad to have completed The WONDERfools and here is my thoughts on this one, i love this one, at first i thought that it wasn't going to be interesting because i had downloaded the first episode and already decided this it wasn't for me and then i saw some clips on tiktok from an account that i follow so i now decided to finish it.
I am thankful that I found this tiktok clip on my FYP as it was what got me back to watch the rest of the film and then once I did it was a lot of fun.
I found myself laughing at a point in the story because I didn't think that it will be funny at all, It's a really funny story for a lot of reasons before anything even happens, The story is set in 1999, right in the middle of all that Y2K doomsday panic, which already gave it this fun nostalgic energy before anything even happened, it follows this girl named Eun Chae-ni who everyone around the town calls "Lady Trainwreck" because, well, her life is a mess in almost every way, but after some weird circumstance, Eun Chae-ni gains the ability to teleport, and she isn't the only one with the superpowers, her neighbors and this shy florist named Gyeong-hun and this classmate named Ro-bin also got super powers of their own.
And there is Lee Woon-jung (Cha Eun-woo), the socially awkward and enigmatic civil servant who somehow gets involved in their mess and whose whole serious and exasperated response to all these people bungling around became one of my favorite things of the series, as he is a complete contrast to their absolute chaos.
What I like most in this series is the fact that because under all that super powers and jokes, each character had their real struggles that they were dealing with, and to be honest, I was so far into the series that I cared about Chae-ni , she is dealing with something heavier than just being clumsy with her ability, and honestly, watching her arc unfold made me care about her a lot more than I expected to when I first gave up on episode one,the show did a good job making sure the comedy never overshadowed the emotional weight each character was carrying quietly
The other side of the story was interesting enough to hold me up until the jokes got to me, and as this new church, unknown to me, began to stir the pot of tension, i liked that it didn't just have jokes for the sake of jokes, there was a villain and stakes being developed all along.
I'll admit, it took me awhile to get going but once it got going, particularly in the middle, I had no desire to drop it!
I was very happy with the end result. Even though I struggled with it in the beginning, the comedy, emotional development and slight action was worth it at the end.
I would certainly recommend WONDERfools, definitely, but I will say this, do not judge it by the first episode and think that it is not a good watch like I did in my experience,Give it a real chance, maybe even watch a clip or two like I did, because this one grows on you in the best way.
