The Residence second episode began where the first episode ended, and that was where Detective Cupp discovered that the foreign prime minister from Australia was wearing A.B.'s white T-shirt. And instead of concluding that he murdered A.B., Cupp interrogated him on why he was wearing the dead man's shirt, and that turned out to be more complicated than I expected. It happened that the prime minister had sex with the White House chef, Marbella, during the state dinner.
And while they were at it, she accidentally banged her head on his nose, which led to nose bleeding that strained his shirt. Going back into the White House, Rylance, the prime minister, met A.B. in that hallway; he asked why he had blood on his shirt, took him to his office, and they swapped shirts. And this explained why the blood-stained shirt was found on A.B. and the prime minister wearing his shirt that night.
In-between the ongoing investigation, the prime minister told Cupp what he saw and how Marvella threatened to kill A.B. because he won't allow her to prepare a flambe dish for the guest. While one of the pastry chiefs also had a tense encounter with A.B., he also added that while they were together in his office, A.B. received a terrible phone call, which made him say he will be dead by the end of the night. And hearing this made all the investigation more complicated and tense.
Detective Cupp had to use what she had gotten to pressure the Australian Foreign Minister to tell his people to remain at the White House until further notice.
The series of interviews and questioning made a lot of things known, including how much pressure was hidden beneath the formal state dinner and what some of the staff faced before the dinner. To investigate A.B.'s final hours, Cupp had to speak to some White House staff, politicians, guests, and even the president, who closed the door. During the interrogation and questioning, one of the White House carpenters on duty recalls hearing A.B. and an unknown person arguing in his office while he said he will reveal the truth. Another staff member recalled Hollinger coming down the staircase that leads to the A.B. office after the argument. And on the other side, Cupp was hearing all the confessions, trying to figure it out while still dealing with the large numbers of people inside the residence.
So, she made it easy by making everyone write their names on a clean sheet of paper and holding it while she snapped them one by one to track their faces.
While the investigation was still ongoing, Rylance recalled seeing a flashlight near the garden shed while he was making love to Marvella, including seeing people outside. While Rylance said that, Cupp recalled that the phone call A.B. received was made from the garden shed room. When she moved to the shed to investigate with the woman in charge, she discovered a piece of broken glass. How small that was, she knew that could be a piece of her investigation. At this point, the ongoing investigation has moved on from who was arguing or who hated A.B., and during this new phase of the investigation, she has begun to figure out where people were, who noticed them, and what they were doing at that particular time of the state dinner.
The president and some White House staff wanted A.B.'s body to be moved out of the residence through the back door not to raise scandal, but Cupp made sure he was taking it out through the front door so everyone could see while she paid attention to their body language. And that alone made the investigation become known to everyone.
This episode was different from the first because she was getting closer to the truth, but no killer was identified yet. As A.B.'s body was being carried out, the whole episode flashed back to the event surrounding his body being staged in the game room. His two wrists were slashed using a kitchen knife to make it look like a suicide. And this made the whole story around his death change from who disliked him and who he was querrelling with to who staged his death.
