Verity | When the Truth Becomes More Frightening Than the Lies

Review by @wildscribe 🏆#197 🎵12 🎬3 📺9 · 1h · of Verity

What made Verity caught more of my attention while watching was that I was instantly unable to decide who the villain might be, and who the victim was. Verity is a movie based on a novel and it was directed by Michael Showalter. The whole movie started with a struggling writer who decided to accept a job to complete the book of a bear selling author Verity.

After a serious accident, Verity has been unable to work, so Lowen who took the job had to move into her home to study her works and manuscripts. At the beginning, it seems to be a career opportunity, but much after, it was disturbing.

One of the things I considered interesting was how I saw Lowen moved into the new house and became drawn into a family she barely knows. At this point, she moved from writing books into the same space with a woman who can barely communicate normally after her accident, her grieving husband, and their young boy who is more matured in a small body while communicating. Although, there has been enough tension for Lowen after seeing the manuscript, which also saw the way she perceived everyone. I love the mystery because if was in her position, I will also question everything.

The coming together of Lowen and Verity under one roof , and their performance was an interesting contrast. There was this mixture of insecurity, curiosity and even suspicions that Lowen exhibited, and while Verity was unable to do much, she still gave her character this unsettling touch. And her grieving husband, Jeremy also gave his uncertain quality. I just found all those details interesting because at some point, I was reconsidering whether the people around Lowen are lying or keeping half of the truth.

And at some point to, I feel they gave the whole movie too much tension especially when it comes to the disturbing discoveries, the sexual tension and some of the dramatic turns I saw instead of making every come together naturally. And some of the scenes feels so unreal too because some of the characters were not developed properly, they were like a rush. In a psychological movie, everything should feel earned and not rushed.

What happened in the end was what kept me talking. Just when I thought I understand what has been happening since the beginning, just one piece of information changed the whole thing. Verity's manuscript's has just been telling a version of the event, while the letter that was found after entirely says another thing. Well, I guess that was part of the plot twist not to give us a comfortable answer. Because I was like will Lowen accept the version that is comfortable with her or will she accept the truth after what has been found.

Verity is an interesting movie for anyone to see. I got entertained and what I enjoyed most is all the uncertainty that was surrounding all the characters which I felt was intentionally designed to shock anyone watching. All the cast did their job accordingly. But I just don't like all the sudden mystery of trying to make some of the scenes dramatic in an unnecessary way. However, seeing what happened between Lowen and Verity got me wondering how do we know the person who deserves our sympathy if two people are saying contradicting things about the same terrible events just like the two main characters, Verity and Lowen.
