It had been a while since I’d seen The Flight—I think this is the third or fourth time I’ve watched it. It’s one of those movies I recommend without hesitation. I don’t think it’s my favorite, but I know that when people ask me for recommendations on what to watch, it’s always one of the first things that comes to mind. This time I watched it with my son. It’s a very intense movie, and I was careful to skip some scenes that I thought were too graphic for him. What I did know, though, was that we could have a good, constructive conversation after watching this extraordinary film.

Hacia tiempo que no veía "El Vuelo" creo está es la tercera o cuarta vez que la veo. Está es una de esas películas que recomiendo con los ojos cerrados. No creo sea mi favorita pero se que cuando me piden opinión sobre que ver, está siempre está en mis recuerdos ligeros para mencionarla. En esta oportunidad la vi con mi hijo, es una película muy cargada y estuve pendiente de suprimir algunas escenas que consideré pasada de tono para mí hijo, lo que si sabía es que una buena conversación constructiva podía sacar luego de ver este extraordinario trabajo fílmico.

The central theme is the almost divine intersection of two completely different lives that converge through moments of excess, lack of control, and vice—and because they are both currently very close to death. Our protagonist, the renowned actor Denzel Washington, is a pilot with a good reputation at work, but in his family life, he is divorced and has no communication with his son; personally, he struggles with a serious alcoholism problem. On the other side is actress Kelly Reilly, who plays Nicole, a young woman addicted to heroin who relapses during her recovery; the two meet in a hospital room, which sets the stage for a romantic relationship.

El punto central es el cruce por casi un toque divino de dos vidas totalmente distintas pero que coinciden por los momentos de excesos, descontrol, los vicios y por estar en este momento muy cerca de la muerte. Nuestro protagonista, el reconocido actor Denzel Washington es un piloto de buena reputación en el trabajo, pero en el ámbito familiar divorciado y con una comunicación nula con su hijo, en lo individual con un problema grave de alcoholismo. Del otro lado está la actriz Kelly Reilly que hace de Nicole, una joven adicta a la heroína, que recae en su proceso de recuperación y se encuentran en una sala de hospital lo cual daría por para una relación amorosa.

Captain Whip Whitaker (Denzel), after a night of drinking, sex, and drugs, has to leave early to fly a flight he’s in command of. Completely drunk and with dawn breaking, he manages to stay on his feet with a dose of cocaine, which keeps him going long enough to take off under normal conditions. But this time, the plane suffers a serious malfunction, forcing him to perform an unconventional maneuver—one that was enough to save nearly all the passengers; without that maneuver, there was no doubt that everyone would have died.

El capitán Whip Whitaker (Denzel), luego de una noche de alcohol, sexo y drogas, le toca salir temprano en un vuelo a su mando. Totalmente ebrio y amanecido puede mantenerse en pie con una dosis de cocaína quien lo mantiene lo suficiente para levantar un vuelo en condiciones normales. Pero en esta oportunidad el avión sufre una avería grave lo cual lo obliga a realizar una maniobra poco convencional y que fue suficiente para salvar a casi todos los pasajeros, sin esa maniobra no había dudas de que todos fuesen muerto.

From that moment on, a race begins to uncover the exact circumstances and what happened on that particular flight. Our protagonist went from being a hero for saving so many people to a villain for hijacking a plane in his condition. Emotions, values, and lies are put to the test in this quest to avoid prison.

Desde ese momento comienza una carrera por averiguar las condiciones exactas y lo ocurrido en ese vuelo en particular. Nuestro protagonista paso de ser un héroe por salvar a tantas personas a un villano por alzar un avión en su estado. Las emociones, los valores y las mentiras se ponen a prueba en este recorrido por salvarse de la cárcel.

This movie reminds me of the disciplinary proceedings faced by baseball players who are suspended when they are suspected of using banned substances to enhance their performance. No one will ever know for sure how an athlete would perform if those substances weren’t part of the equation. Similarly, neither the jury, the prosecution, nor anyone else could have known how that flight would have ended if Captain Whip hadn’t been doped.

Está película me recuerda los procesos disciplinarios que viven los personajes del béisbol que son vetados cuando se sospecha que consumen sustancias prohibidas para elevar su rendimiento. Nadie va a saber con certeza cuál sería el rendimiento de un atleta sino estuvieses estás sustancias en la ecuación. De la misma forma, el jurado, la fiscalía, ni nadie podia saber cómo fuese terminado ese vuelo, si el capitán Whip no fuese estado dopado.

In the end, the unexpected happens, leading to an important lesson and leaving the viewer with deep reflections on the problems people can face. None of us are immune to the problems of excess, and if we don’t recognize them in time, they can spiral out of control and cause us a great deal of harm... I highly recommend this movie—it’s a must-see from start to finish!

Al final ocurre lo inesperado, lo cual concluye con una gran enseñanza y que deja pensando bajo una reflexión profunda sobre estos problemas que pueden vivir las personas. En qué ninguno estamos exentos de los problemas de exceso y que de alguna manera si no lo reconocemos a tiempo es posible se pueda escapar de nuestro control y hacernos mucho daño... ¡recomiendo está película, no tiene perdida de principio a fin!
