Star Trek, across its many iterations, has frequently been accused of naivety, ponderous dialogue, or occasionally muddled science. Yet, one charge rarely sticks is that its creators lacked compassion or a fundamental desire to engage with meaningful human (and alien) dilemmas. The critical flaw, however, often emerges not from the presence of this moral compass, but from the insistence upon broadcasting its bearings with the subtlety of a photon torpedo blast. When the writers feel compelled to prove their ethical bona fides to the audience, the resulting episodes can become heavy-handed sermons rather than nuanced explorations. Such is the enduring, yet profoundly unfortunate, legacy of Symbiosis, a first-season entry in The Next Generation that has secured its place in Trek infamy precisely because it attempts to tackle a devastatingly real-world crisis – addiction – with all the finesse of a starship collision.

The episode commences with the Enterprise-D investigating stellar anomalies in the Delos system. Their scientific inquiry is abruptly interrupted by a distress call from the Sanction, a freighter belonging to the pre-warp civilisation of Ornara, engaged in trade with their neighbours, the Brekkans. Captain Picard offers assistance and is immediately perplexed by the Ornaran crew’s apparent incompetence and their bizarre insistence that only their cargo – not themselves – be beamed aboard the Enterprise. This illogical demand culminates in the Sanction’s catastrophic disintegration, with the Enterprise managing to rescue only four of the six people on board: two Ornarans, T’John (Merritt Butrick) and Romas (Richard Lineback), and two Brekkans, Sobi (Judson Scott) and Langor (Kimberly Farr). The visual contrast is stark: the Ornarans are visibly emaciated, trembling, and wracked with pain, whilst the Brekkans appear robust and entirely healthy. T’John explains Ornara’s centuries-long torment under a devastating plague, for which the sole cure is "felicium" – the very cargo the Sanction was transporting, exclusively supplied by Brekkans. This establishes the ostensible "symbiosis": Brekka provides the cure, Ornara provides trade goods, a relationship seemingly vital for both worlds.

Dr. Crusher’s subsequent medical investigation shatters this facade. Far from harbouring a plague, the Ornarans exhibit no pathological disease; their condition is pure, unadulterated chemical dependency. Felicium is not a cure, but a highly potent and addictive narcotic. The Brekkans, Sobi and Langor, are fully aware of this truth. Their "symbiosis" is, in reality, a calculated exploitation: Brekka prospers by manufacturing and supplying the drug, while Ornara collapses under the weight of its addiction, its society crippled by the need to procure felicium just to stave off agonising withdrawal. The recent solar flares have disrupted the supply chain by damaging Ornaran freighters, exacerbating the crisis. Picard, confronted with this revelation, makes a characteristically difficult decision rooted in his interpretation of the Prime Directive. He refuses to reveal the truth of the felicium addiction to the Ornarans, believing the shock and societal collapse would be catastrophic. Simultaneously, he denies them the means to continue their dependency, refusing to repair their freighters or provide replacement vessels. The Ornarans, Picard concludes, must face the brutal reality of withdrawal and recovery unaided – a harsh, arguably cruel, application of non-interference designed to force societal "maturation" through suffering.

As someone who grew up in Split, Croatia, during the twilight years of Communist Yugoslavia – a city then notorious for its devastating heroin epidemic ravaging its youth – the allegory of Symbiosis struck with unnerving familiarity. The physical deterioration, the desperate bargaining, and the societal decay; these were not fictional constructs but grim realities witnessed on Split’s streets. Initially, there was a certain dark amusement in seeing such a recognisably 20th-century scourge refracted through Star Trek’s typically optimistic lens. One could almost appreciate the attempt to confront contemporary darkness within the franchise’s utopian framework. Yet, this amusement quickly curdled. The true irony, the source of lasting discomfort, lies not in the attempt to address addiction, but in the execution. The episode’s clumsy, almost parodic handling of the subject matter renders its underlying message – chillingly relevant today amidst the relentless profiteering of the US pharmaceutical industry fuelling the opioid crisis – utterly impotent. It becomes less a cautionary tale and more a self-satirising relic of 1980s moral panic television.

The script, credited to Robert Lewin, Richard Manning, and Hans Beimler, commits the cardinal sin of reducing a complex, multifaceted societal catastrophe to a simplistic, almost cartoonish morality play. The notion that an entire spacefaring civilisation, capable of interplanetary trade, could collectively fail to recognise they are suffering from drug addiction rather than a plague is profoundly unconvincing. It insults the intelligence of both the audience and the hypothetical Ornaran populace. The allegory lacks any nuance; the Ornarans are depicted solely as pathetic, weak-willed addicts devoid of agency or societal complexity, whilst the Brekkans are painted with the broadest brush as uniformly ruthless, calculating exploiters. This binary opposition – the helpless victim versus the evil profiteer – conforms precisely to the crudest propaganda tropes, offering no insight into the systemic forces, economic desperation, or psychological complexities that fuel real-world addiction crises. It reduces a profound human tragedy to a simplistic "Just Say No" fable.

This descent into cliché is epitomised by the infamous scene where Wesley Crusher, expressing naive astonishment at why anyone would become addicted, receives a stern lecture from Tasha Yar. Despite subtle hints that Yar’s own troubled past might involve similar struggles, her delivery is pure, unadulterated 1980s anti-drug propaganda that lands with the thud of a lead balloon, evoking the spectre of Nancy Reagan far more effectively than any meaningful character moment. It transforms the episode into the very thing it likely aspired to avoid: a "Very Special Episode" of the worst kind, where complex human failings are reduced to a single, easily dismissible soundbite.

Furthermore, Picard’s application of the Prime Directive here feels profoundly inconsistent and intellectually dishonest. While the Prime Directive traditionally forbids interference with pre-warp societies to allow natural development, Picard’s choice to withhold the truth and the means of continuation is an active intervention with catastrophic potential consequences. He is not observing non-interference; he is deliberately engineering societal collapse as a form of forced therapy. This stands in stark contrast to numerous other episodes where Picard bends or interprets the Directive flexibly to prevent immediate, demonstrable harm. Here, his rigidity feels less like principled adherence and more like a narrative shortcut to a bleak, supposedly "mature" ending that ultimately satisfies no one. It provides ample ammunition for critics who found the first season of TNG uneven and overly enamoured with its own moral posturing.

It is worth acknowledging, however, that director Win Phelps delivers competent, workmanlike television. The pacing is generally solid and the special effects for the era (particularly the freighter disintegration and stellar phenomena). The fundamental flaws lie squarely in the conception and writing, not the execution of the basic televisual craft.

What ultimately elevates Symbiosis from mere mediocrity to a strangely haunting piece of television history is the casting, particularly the tragic resonance of Merritt Butrick’s performance as T’John. Butrick, alongside Judson Scott (who played Joachim in The Wrath of Khan), brought prior Star Trek pedigree to the roles. Scott, while competent, delivers a fairly standard portrayal of the smug Brekkan supplier. But Butrick, cast as the brilliant scientist David Marcus in Wrath and The Search for Spock, undergoes a startling transformation. T’John is a man utterly consumed by suffering, his desperation palpable in every laboured breath, every tremor, every pleading glance. The performance is raw, deeply affecting, and far removed from the idealistic young scientist he previously embodied. The profound tragedy is that Butrick’s gaunt appearance and visible anguish were not solely the product of acting. He was, at the time of filming, desperately ill with AIDS, a condition he was battling with limited treatment options and staggering medical costs. He reportedly took the role as a favour from the Star Trek production team, who sought to provide him with much-needed financial support. Knowing that Butrick succumbed to the disease less than a year after the episode aired (March 1989, following its April 1988 broadcast) imbues his performance with an unbearable, unintended meta-textual weight. The anguish in T’John’s eyes, his struggle for each breath, transcends the poorly written allegory; it becomes a heart-wrenching reflection of Butrick’s own very real and losing battle. This unintended layer of truth is the sole element of Symbiosis that resonates with genuine, unmanufactured power, making the episode’s other failures all the more lamentable. It serves as a stark reminder that real human suffering demands more than clumsy allegory and simplistic slogans; it demands empathy, understanding, and, above all, the narrative sophistication worthy of the tragedy it represents.

India boasts the most vibrant film industry in the world, with an annual output that, strictly in terms of the number of feature films produced, easily surpasses Hollywood's. Yet for decades, Western perception of Indian cinema has been stubbornly reduced to the glittering spectacle of Bollywood or the reductive memes that circulate online. This narrow view began to shift during the zenith of globalisation at the turn of the millennium—a period that benefited not just India's economy but also its cultural exports. Among the first filmmakers to seize this international opportunity was Mira Nair, whose 2001 film Monsoon Wedding not only triumphed with the prestigious Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival but also shattered international box office records for Indian cinema, proving that Indian stories could resonate powerfully beyond the subcontinent's borders.

Set against the bustling backdrop of Delhi, Monsoon Wedding immerses viewers in the chaotic preparations for a large Punjabi wedding within the relatively affluent Verma family. Lalit Verma (Naseeruddin Shah) and his wife Primmi (Lilette Dubey) are orchestrating the marriage of their daughter Aditi (Vasundhara Das) to Hemant Rai (Parvin Dabas), the son of a family friend residing in the United States. This arranged marriage unfolds with remarkable modernity—Hemant genuinely likes his prospective bride and even agrees to proceed despite Aditi's confession about her affair with Vikram Mehta (Sameer Arya), her married television station boss. Amidst this emotional turmoil, the eccentric wedding planner P.K. Dubey (Vijay Raaz) provides comic relief while simultaneously falling madly in love with the Verma family's maid Alice (Tillotama Shome), adding another layer to the film's exploration of class boundaries.

Before Monsoon Wedding, Mira Nair had already established herself as the most prominent female Indian director on the international stage. The film's authenticity stems from Nair's insider-outsider perspective—sufficiently rooted in Indian culture to capture its nuances, yet sufficiently distanced to present it with fresh eyes for international audiences.

Monsoon Wedding emerged during a period of profound transformation in India, when globalisation was enthusiastically embraced but simultaneously created tensions between tradition and modernity. Nair brilliantly captures this cultural moment through the Verma family's international composition—members hail from different corners of the globe, with younger generations having adopted aspects of their adopted countries' cultures. The film subtly illustrates this through language, with English serving as the family's lingua franca, punctuated by occasional Hindi and Punjabi phrases. A semi-humorous scene where television talk show participants debate censorship perfectly encapsulates the cultural conflicts emerging in newly globalised India. Nair doesn't present these tensions as binary oppositions but rather as fluid, overlapping identities that coexist within contemporary Indian families.

The film pays respectful homage to Hindi cinema's musical traditions while simultaneously subverting expectations. Canadian composer Mychael Danna's score plays a significant role, yet unlike traditional Bollywood films where song and dance numbers often function as standalone spectacles, Monsoon Wedding integrates its musical moments organically into the narrative. The wedding's traditional songs emerge naturally from the festivities rather than serving as elaborate production numbers. This approach allows Nair to honour Indian cinematic conventions while avoiding the "exotic" portrayal that often characterises Western interpretations of Indian culture. The music becomes an authentic expression of the characters' emotions rather than a commercial interruption.

The general tone of Monsoon Wedding is predominantly light-hearted, with Sabrina Dhawan's script achieving a remarkable balance between crowd-pleasing romantic comedy and festival-worthy serious drama. What makes the film particularly sophisticated is how it handles its darkest element—the revelation of childhood sexual abuse. Rather than presenting this as a shocking plot twist, Nair and Dhawan hint at the trauma from the beginning, allowing the devastating revelation near the film's conclusion to feel inevitable rather than sensationalised. This narrative choice prevents the film from descending into melodrama while still addressing the issue with appropriate gravity. Similarly, the film explores class differences through the charming romance between P.K. Dubey and Alice, whose relationship provides warmth and hope amid otherwise heavy themes. This delicate balancing act prevents Monsoon Wedding from becoming either a frivolous comedy or an unrelentingly dark drama.

The film benefits enormously from its exceptional ensemble cast. Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah (known to Western audiences as Captain Nemo in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) delivers a masterclass in restrained emotion as Lalit Verma, the patriarch grappling with family revelations. Shefali Shah shines in her complex role as Ria, conveying years of trauma through subtle glances and hesitant gestures. Vijay Raaz serves as the film's comic heartbeat as the flamboyant wedding planner P.K. Dubey, his performance providing both levity and unexpected depth. The supporting cast, including newcomers and established Indian actors, creates a rich tapestry of characters that feels authentic rather than stereotypical—a testament to Nair's direction and casting choices.

Although Mira Nair's subsequent career failed to reach the commercial and critical heights of Monsoon Wedding, she has recently returned to the spotlight due to her son Zohran Mamdani's political rise. Mamdani recently won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, a victory that would make him the city's first openly socialist mayor if ultimately successful.

Monsoon Wedding remains significant not merely as a well-crafted film but as a cultural milestone that expanded Western understanding of Indian cinema beyond Bollywood stereotypes. By presenting an Indian story with universal emotional resonance—family, love, betrayal, forgiveness—Nair created a bridge between cultures at a critical moment in globalisation. The film's enduring appeal lies in its ability to balance specific cultural details with universal human experiences, demonstrating that stories rooted in particular traditions can speak to audiences worldwide. While Indian cinema has since gained greater international recognition through streaming platforms and global film festivals, Monsoon Wedding paved the way for this broader appreciation, proving that Indian stories need not be diluted for Western consumption to find global success.

I didn’t just watch it — I felt it. It’s one of those films that makes you imagine, “What if this actually happened tomorrow, in my neighborhood, in front of my own house?” And suddenly the whole thing stops being just fiction and starts to feel terrifyingly close.

The movie throws you right into the ordinary. Ray Ferrier, played by Tom Cruise, isn’t your perfect hero. He’s a divorced dockworker, a bit rough around the edges, trying to piece together his fractured relationship with his kids. That raw imperfection pulled me in immediately because it wasn’t some superhero with all the answers — it was a man with brokenness, like most of us. You feel his awkwardness with his teenage son, Robbie, and the tender, almost fragile bond he has with his young daughter, Rachel. And it’s within that messy, relatable family tension that the end of the world begins to creep in.

It is like a silent storm when something goes wrong. There is no thunder but a weird lightning strikes again and again in the same place. The air feels charged. You are aware of the strange silence before disorder? It is what Spielberg constructs here so well. And the ground then clefts, and the tripods come out. Tall, gigantic machines resembling nightmares made of metal and flesh. The very noise you can hear when they are switched on--that guttering horn--I tell you it grabs your bones. My mouth simply fell open when they began to make people disappear by merely blowing them away. It has no warm-up, no explanation, no preface, just brutal annihilation and in a moment the streets Ray and the people living around him are not streets anymore, they are ashes and screams.

Among the things that struck me the most was the fact that normal life was disappearing so fast. People are curious and one second, they are trying to capture a selfie in their heads with the strange machines and the following second, panic breaks out. And it is not even heroic panic, it is desperate, selfish, ugly. At the moment Ray takes his kids and runs off, it dawns on you that survival is no longer about striking back at this stage, but about fleeing, sheltering, and making your family as tight as you can and hoping that you will not turn into dust like the rest.

This is a chilling scene where Ray and his children end up in the house of one of his friends to seek shelter, but he falls in the bathroom. His mirror-image is marked with gray ashes, - not of dirt, not of smoke, - but of human remains. You can feel his breath trembling, and there is a moment, when he is not the father who tries to hold himself together anymore, he is only a man who is ready to explode. That scene gutted me. Because in that instant, you know he’s realizing he’s got two kids clinging to him, and he can’t afford to collapse, even though inside, he’s falling apart.

Traveling with his children turns into a nightmare road trip through hell. Every stop is chaos. There’s that scene when they try to get into a car, thinking it’s their lifeline, but the mob takes it. People turn on each other like wild animals because survival strips away politeness, morality, everything. And then the ferry scene — oh God, that ferry scene. The hope of crossing the water feels like salvation, but once again, the tripods rise from the depths, dragging ships and humans alike. The way the water boils with destruction, the screaming, the chaos — it made me clutch my chair. Hope gets snatched away just as quickly as it’s offered.

Rachel, the little girl, became the heart of the film for me. Her innocence, her screams, her inability to fully understand what’s happening — it pierced through me. There’s this one moment when she’s watching bodies float down the river, and you see childhood end right there in her wide, horrified eyes. And Robbie, the teenage son, is caught in that restless, rebellious stage where he wants to fight, to do something, even though he’s just a boy. His clashes with Ray aren’t just father-son fights anymore; they’re about how each one faces survival. Robbie wants to join the military resistance, even if it means dying, while Ray is just desperately clinging to the idea of keeping his kids alive. That argument — that tear in their family — felt so painfully real because it’s not just about aliens, it’s about what trauma does to people.

And then there is the man they meet who has gone mad hiding in a basement, and he is Ogilvy. The entire scene in the house was choking. The walls are closing on you as Ray understands that this man is too unstable, too dangerous, and he can murder all of them. That is one of the moments that would remain lodged in your throat as it is the moral weight of what Ray does there, silencing Ogilvy to save Rachel. It is ugly and heartbreaking but it is survival stripped down to the bare bones. I always remembering on that scene and how silent it was after that. The silence which is heavier than the sound.

The aliens in the form of tripods were not machines per se but symbols. Unconquerable, gigantic, ruthless. Then the twist appears in the most embarrassing manner possible, humanity does not overcome them. Not the guns, not the missiles, not the cleverness. They perish due to earth itself - bacteria, germs, the smallest creatures we can daily coexist with. That was an irony, that poetic justice, which mopped me out. It made me remember that however strong something might look, even the most insignificant, neglected detail can be its downfall.

Towards the finale, as Ray joins up with his former wife and their son, I was exhausted. It was not a slick, heroic conclusion that you would have hoped a blockbuster would offer. It was raw survival. A man who was broken, managed to bring his daughter alive somehow. And that was enough. Due to the fact that at times, enough is not defeating the enemy but it is only ensuring that your loved ones live another day.

The thing that particularly lingered with me after viewing War of the Worlds was not the presence of the aliens or the devastation but the manner in which it stripped down human behavior when put to the test. It demonstrated how fast the civilized world disintegrates, how slim that coat of paint is. Yet it also was strong enough not to break down - how love can make you keep on when all around you is in terror, how the father who knows not everything can nevertheless lift himself up to the task when his children need him the most.

Frankly speaking, it made me wonder: in my case, what would I do? Would I fight as Robbie, stand like the mob, lose my head as Ogilvy, stick with my family like Ray? That is the part that strikes the hardest. The reason is that we still really do not know until the ground opens up and the monsters come up.

You start with Ben Edwards—played by Taylor Kitsch—locked in that intense world of Navy SEAL brotherhood. The first mission in Mosul? It drags you right into the mud: bombs go off, brothers fall, and a man Edwards respects as “selfless” ends up tethered to a suicide vest just to save his kids. You actually feel that gut-punch of watching ideals die mid-explosion.

Then all falls apart. Ben delivers a speech about loyalty and believes he believes in what he is saying. However, there is the betrayal, then you learn about whom he trusted, it is the agency, folded around a deal with the same terrorist, the one he just shot. What you get to see, when you really see, what fear and rage can make of a man is that realization, when you see the awe in the eyes of Edwards fall.

Then he and Hastings, his SEAL brother, are stripped of their badges--they are left to confront a system that is as broken as they are. The scene when they go back to nothing, nothing, no mission, no honors, just parking lots and airport bars, that silence is only loud enough that you notice the shame and confusion.

But that is not the end of his story.

Here walks in Jed Haverford--the CIA genius behind the curtain--whispers: I can fix this. And with that whisper Ben finds a lifeline. Enough to take the ring on again, and drag himself back in. Unless this time into the shade still darker than a SEAL can be. And that is when it all becomes different, Ben is not fighting for the country anymore, he is now slipping into a gray-shaded mission that eats your soul.

The episode is PURE adrenaline. Night missions, sniper games, fights in the streets this is not half-baked stunt footage. It’s physical and you can touch every bullet on the screen.

On the emotional level, however, when Kitsch describes Edwards as shocked, silent, haunted, it is another thing. Instead, he is not a macho bulletproof superhero; he is a man whose honor is failing him time after time.

You get a few glimpses of the bigger world, such as Reece appearing, that nod to the original series, but enough to make you aware that this affects more than just a single man.

What struck me most? This show does not only display the actions of a soldier, it allows us to experience how it is when the world you have created is based on trust, and this trust is destroyed. When you are conditioned to trust in loyalty, and are instead sold shoddy offers and denials. This is because that is the place Edwards is at now- he is left with decisions that can be devastating to him, and there isn’t a safe ground anywhere.

At the point when the finale things begin to come to a close, you are not merely viewing espionage. You are observing a man being driven to his own worst enemy because of sorrow and disgrace. And at the conclusion you are not necessarily waiting to view the next episode but you are asking whether he will see what man he is turning out to be.

Since Philip K Dick is one of my favourite Authors (and that assessment is based on a single book alone, the venerable Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) - the adaptations of some of his short stories into single episode screenplays existing was a fact I was very happy to become aware of.

Philip K Dick's Electric Dreams is a show that does exactly this - and presents a number of stories in the context of short film.

I elected to start with "Human Is", because I know the context of this short story, having recently experienced the Audio Book version of it. This one certainly embellishes on the text quite a bit, introducing elements that look good for the screen, but I heavily question their relevance in the storyline.

There is still the cold, indifferent husband, but the suggestion, and direct depiction of extra-marital affairs is unnecessary for this science fiction story, which is fundamentally about an cold, borderline abusive partner, a strained relationship, and a planet on the brink of running out of resources.

An expedition to elsewhere occurs, and it appears that everyone perishes. Until, it becomes apparent that they haven't.

Philip K Dick is nothing if ever prophetic, though, much of this is noting new. This story acts as more of a prequel for the short story in its opening scenes, and its depictions of everyday life, intersected with conflict, loss, uncertainty and loss, stays true to Dick's style of storytelling.

The visual style of this episode is sharp, angular, and textured. The casting, which mainly consists of older actors and actresses is mature and measured. These are absolute professionals depicting characters in serious, measured ways. There is no corny acting to be found here.

For something that was to be episodic, disconnected stories, the sets are surprisingly detailed, painting more detail than I was able to pick up in the short story.

The man's experience returns him home changed, forgetful of his experiences, and what follows is the real story.

It isn't as simple to follow as something like a typical Black Mirror episode, and the pacing is far more subdued, with slow, lingering shots on details that embellish detail.

The exploration of Silas and Vera's "born again" relationship is the central point of tension in this episode, and it is explored deeply, if only, to the viewer through lengthy glances and simple dialogue.

Knowing the short story adds a huge, additional sense of tension to the story, which might have a first time viewer / reader ask the ever present question of why? Which is, of course, this story's payoff.

Along the way, the production values are incredibly high, and the presentation, costumes, lighting and even the special effects are all top notch.

It makes me look forward to experiencing the others in the series, even if I am likely to do it in a crazy out of order sequence, as they are not connected at all.

Foremost among these contributors was Richard Price, the lauded novelist whose seminal works like Clockers dissected the intricate, often brutal, symbiosis between crime, law enforcement, and urban decay – the very lifeblood of The Wire. The show paid early homage to Price’s influence by casting him as the English literature teacher in the pivotal Season 2 episode All Prologue. Like many Wire episodes airing early in a season, All Due Respect operates with a deceptive slowness. On the surface, little appears to happen in terms of the overarching narrative arcs. The Major Case Unit (MCU), despite the Herculean efforts documented in Seasons 1 and 2, finds itself with little tangible success to show. Their painstaking investigation into the Barksdale and Proposition Joe organisations seems stalled, hitting a wall of frustrating inertia. Wiretaps, the unit’s technological lifeline, yield mostly mundane chatter or, worse, cruel false promises. The pivotal moment arrives when Cheese, a key lieutenant for Proposition Joe, is overheard on a wiretap expressing deep, anguished regret over shooting a "dawg." The MCU detectives, led by the perpetually frustrated Cedric Daniels, seize upon this. Each thread is woven with precision, contributing to the season’s tapestry of interconnected systems failing or adapting.

The most indelible moment, however, is a direct homage. The awkward, tension-filled encounter in a cinema lobby between Narcotics detectives and Barksdale crew members, each accompanied by dates, is lifted almost verbatim from Price’s 1992 novel Clockers. Its inclusion isn’t mere fan service; it’s a powerful meta-textual wink, grounding The Wire firmly within the literary tradition Price helped define, and demonstrating how seamlessly his novelistic eye translated to the series’ unique rhythm.

Crucially, All Due Respect introduces The Deacon, played by Melvin Williams. This casting is profoundly significant beyond performance. Williams was a notorious real-life Baltimore drug kingpin in the 1980s, the very figure who served as a primary model for Avon Barksdale. Arrested by The Wire’s co-creator, former homicide detective Ed Burns, Williams served time before turning his life around, becoming a community figure – precisely the role he embodies on screen. It is a testament to David Simon’s genius in recognising that the story of Baltimore, and by extension America, was too vast, too complex, for any single voice. By yielding the floor to masters like Price, The Wire achieved not just greatness, but an enduring, uncomfortable truth – a truth delivered here with the quiet, devastating force of a misinterpreted word about a dead dog.

A couple of days ago Prisoner of War was released. This is a martial arts/drama/war action movie with the one and only Scott Adkins. To tell you the truth i give it to him, he never quits and in my opinion, he is still an underrated movies star.

Let's say that we have top-tier movies, mid-tier movies and low-tier movies. He has played in a lot of top-tier movies, specific roles though and each and every one of these "minor" roles is perfect. One example is John Wick: Chapter 4.

For some reason that i don't really know, i have years to see him being a protagonist in one of these top-tier movies. At the same time he keeps on grinding and i have seen him being the main protagonist in a lot of mid-tier movies. I say mid-tier movies not based on the plot or something, based on the budget, the director and supporting cast, all of which are mid tier. In my opinion each of these movies is entertaining but still mid-tier.

Plot

Prisoner of War is another mid-tier movie where Scott Adkins plays James Wright, a British Royal Air Force officer during World War 2. During a raid or something, his crew pretty much dies and is captured by the Japanese in their camp. The commander of the Japanese camp is called Ito and orders his crew to behead James.

James manages to kill the 3 officers but he then gets captured again. Ito, instead of killing him he keeps him captive along with other officers from around the world. At the same time Ito is bit crazy as he has created an arena in the middle of the camp where he organizes fights between his officers and the captives.

Ofc James is in the center of the fighting arena often, as he basically obliterates everyone. Meanwhile, he tries to find, along with the other captives a way to send a signal to the allied forces in order to save them.

Good and Bad

Let's start with the good. As in every movie that involves Adkins, the fight scenes are amazing. Also, the supporting cast is doing a great job. The budget seems a bit higher than the other films but still, you could clearly see that if they had more, they could do way more.

For example, pretty much the whole movie is set in the camp, which is basically cost-friendly, and some scenes were filmed in a nearby forest. Not historically accurate, not top-notch graphics but still decent. Also i believe they could have made a lot more in terms of the fighting area and fight scenes, but the point of this film was the escape.

Overall, a 6.5/10 for me and another B-rated movie from Adkins.

The conversation between Robbie and Maeve in the car really shows you how different these two characters are when it comes to handling grief and trauma, Maeve is trying to be the voice of reason telling Robbie that his kids are gonna remember him as a murderer and kidnapper if he keeps going down this path, which is probably the smartest thing anyone has said on this show so far, but Robbie is so consumed by this need for revenge that he cant see past his own anger, he keeps talking about taking the Dark Hearts money to build a better life for his family but really its just about getting back at Jason for what he did to Billy, its not only dope money but he is trying to single hand bankrupt a crew that has been running dope spots for years and he thinks him and two friends going to bring them down? thats just plain stupid, thats how you get killed. Tom Pelphrey does such a great job in these scenes, you can see the pain in his eyes when he talks about having to thank Jason for coming to the funeral, knowing damn well that Jason was the one who beat his brother to death, its like swallowing glass every time he remembers that moment.

On episode 3 we finally got some action when the FBI task force is getting closer to figuring out who the Halloween crew really is and the whole thing with Cliff getting his house raided was intense as hell, especially when Tom gets thrown down the stairs just like what happened to his wife, that was some dark irony right there. I remember the moment Peaches came up I thought, he is getting killed and indirectly going to snitch everyone, exactly as it happen because not only he got killed but because he was showing off his girl ring got others at his job to talk too much to the FBI and got a lot of attention, enough for them to start finding out who was he working with. Alison Oliver continues to be great as Elizabeth even though her accent slips up sometimes which is annoying but whatever, her scenes with Anthony at the bar were really sweet and you can tell these two have chemistry even though she keeps freezing up during the action scenes. The whole setup with Rey and Shelly trying to rob Cliffs house while the FBI is also there was chaotic and stupid too, what they were expecting? for Cliff and Robbie not to figure out if the dope gets lost, that was karma right there for been such a rat this episode also shows how everybody is scrambling to get their hands on this fentanyl and nobody really knows what the hell is going on anymore or do with it, certainly not Robbie or Cliff.

What really got my attention this episode was the reveal that Eryn is the informant whos been feeding information to Robbie and Cliff, The moment Robbie and Maeve start talking about why he was doing it and everything what went down I know there hard to be a female involve trying to get revenge too, gnl and tell I knew it was her but suspect might be her from the way she was acting in previous episodes but seeing it confirmed was still satisfying. The fact that she was cheating on Jason with Billy makes the whole revenge plot even more complicated, because now its not just about Robbie wanting to kill Jason, Eryn also has her own reasons for wanting to see him dead. This adds more pouder to the barril and someone going to get killed, its very likely that Eryn gets discovered by the Dark Hearts and use her as bait to get to Robbie if they know its him by then, instead of just having one person seeking revenge we now have multiple characters with their own motivations all working against the Dark Hearts, it makes things feel more intense, there is hate involve and more personal for everyone involved.

The ending with the revelation that someone in the task force is leaking information to the Dark Hearts is something Im not totally buying but lets put on the conspiration hat, I was just starting to like all these characters and now I gotta suspect everyone which sucks but also makes sense from a storytelling perspective. My money is on Lizzie being the mole even though she seems like the most innocent one, sometimes the people you least suspect are the ones betraying you, plus her whole thing about being a honest cop could be a cover for something darker, its just the perfect cover, been bad at the job, showing as the week link, what if they got into the FBI just to show how she can bring down an operation of the top justice agencies in the country. This series is starting to get intense on every side, there was this scene with Maeve teaching Sam how to swim was beautiful and sad at the same time, honestly I thought she was going to drawn him to get over with everything, hell sounds crazy but cmon, but then when she talks about choosing what you take from your parents and what you leave behind it felt like the most mature thing anyone has said on this show, she really is the moral center of this whole mess and probably the only one who might survive with her soul intact. Overall this episode did a fantastic job building more tension, provide tons of context by giving us deeper insight into why these characters are making the choices they are, even if those choices are completely fucked up, I give it a solid 8 out of 10.
