After years of it being somewhere in the back of my mind and being referred to as “that intense Mel Gibson movie,” I recently watched it again and was struck dumb all over again by how this thing clutches you by the throat and doesn't let go for two and a half hours. It could actually be one of the least talked-about survival horror films I have ever seen, and it is a film I feel is underrated outside of movie-talk communities.

The premise is simple enough to fool readers into thinking it is something easily understood... In a village in Mesoamerica, a young man called Jaguar Paw lives in peace until a raiding party from a nearby more powerful civilization invades his village and decimates his people, using them as slaves and sacrifices. He manages to sneak his pregnant wife and young son down a deep well before he too is captured, and after that, it's a constant, frenetic pursuit; Jaguar Paw must fight to survive the freedom of captivity, and race home before his family runs out of food, water and time.

I was impressed the second time around at how assured and secure the filmmaking is. At no point does Gibson hold your hand... this movie is entirely in Yucatec Maya and subtitled, and the cast is all lesser- or unknown-known actors... and the decision at every turn seems like a good idea. It does commit to dropping you into this world and that's how it works. Don't mistake you for actors in an "ancient civilization" movie, you are watching real people in a real, brutal, breathing world.

The pacing is really a masterclass! The first act has time, allowing the character of Jaguar Paw's village to develop, the warmth and humor in his relationships to develop, the rhythms of the day to develop... it's important that it does because this sudden invasion, brutal, is like a gut-punch and not "the plot starting. After that initial action, the film is pretty much a continuous, extended pursuit scene with little relief. The jungle chase at the end half of the film is still one of the most frantically tension-filled and well choreographed scenes I've ever seen.. all the obstacles, all the close calls, all the desperate scrambles over trees, is all so real, so earned, even if it was for cheap thrills.

It's a film that's about as spoken word-heavy as a 1947 English long-distance train and Rudy Youngblood, the lead, does a lot of the work here; maybe as much as all of it. He's not doing it for show; he's showing the rawness and desperation that he has. It's what you'd expect a show to do when the show isn't like, say, a crowd-pleasing musical or awards winning; it's the reason the film doesn't suck.

I also just have to say how pretty this film is. The cinematography of the jungle is amazing, the recreation of the Mayan city, complete with its massive pyramids and sadistic sacrifice rituals, is staggering in scale, and there's a lived-in feel to each set and costume, so that the entire world feels real.... not some Hollywood version of "ancient civilization. It's worth saying much about Gibson as a man and filmmaker, a lot more, for that matter, but he is indisputably talented at capturing raw, immersive, spectacular images here.

Yes, it's violent. Violent for real and with no hesitation, it may turn off some viewers. But I didn't feel like the brutality was gruesome, in fact, it felt necessary to the stakes of the story, to make you feel exactly how dangerous this world is and how much Jaguar Paw has to overcome to get home.

I was completely exhausted at the end of the story, which I won't ruin it up for you guys, but in a good way. There's very few films that can do this for the whole thing without slowing down, and this is the reason I remembered this movie the whole time as I rewatched it.

The movie is a beautifully crafted thriller about survival that remains one of the most tightly wound movies I've ever seen.

When his son assumes the role, he gives the position to one of his friends, implying it's because of her appearance—that she's not friendly and doesn't know how to play golf. He suggests that if she wants to prove otherwise, she should join them on a project trip, hoping to exploit her knowledge.

Once on the plane, one of them pulls out an old video of Linda participating in a survival competition, as she's a fan of such things. They begin to mock her, and at that moment, she realizes the situation. At that precise moment, the plane starts malfunctioning, and everything spirals out of control. Almost everyone dies except for Linda and Bradley, her current boss at the company.

She sees that he's alive and injured, builds him a small shelter, and tries to nurse him back to health. After a day and a half, he wakes up acting as if he were still in the office, trying to boss her around and displaying superiority. Linda tells him they're not in the office anymore, that she's the one in charge now, and without her, he wouldn't be alive. He simply tells her he doesn't need her. Linda decides to leave for a while to teach him a lesson. He knocked her unconscious and ran off in the makeshift boat, but he didn't get far, as the boat broke apart and he was drowning. Linda woke up and rescued him again. He was remorseful and said he wouldn't do it again. She told him to relax, that it was okay. While she was cooking a seafood skewer with a starfish, she fed it to him. At that moment, he began to have a muscle spasm, and she pulled out a knife and lowered his pants, making him think she was going to cut off his genitals. She said, "Next time, this could happen to you."

Things then started to flow a little more smoothly, and they both let their guard down, until one day Linda went out to explore the island and noticed a boat had arrived with Bradley's fiancée. She had been looking for him and hadn't given up. Linda was surprised and led them along a path. She remembered a time when someone was about to fall there, so she guided them to that spot. When they argue, she comes out with a gun, and he tells her that everything will be different, that she could pretend nothing happened. At that moment, he takes the gun from her, and when he tries to fire, he realizes it's unloaded because Linda had taken it from him. She knocks him down and kills him with a golf club. Then they show a scene from almost a year after her rescue, with her playing golf and being interviewed about her successful life and the drastic change in her life, with a nice car and a good job, leaving behind everything she did on that island. La película comienza con escenas típicas de oficina, donde se mira que linda la protagonista, es despreciada por sus compañeros, dónde le roban crédito en su trabajo y le niegan un puesto que estaba destinado para ella, su ex jefe dejo entre dicho que cuando su hijo tomara el cargo ella sería ejecutiva, cuando el hijo toma el puesto le dió el cargo a uno de sus amigos, solo dando entender que era por su aspecto, que no era simpática y no sabía jugar golf, pero que si quería demostrar lo contrario los acompañara a un viaje para un proyecto, queriendo aprovecharse de su conocimiento.

Cuando ya están en el avión, uno de ellos saca un vídeo viejo de linda, que muestra su participación en un concurso de supervivencia, ya que ella es fanática de estas cosas, empiezan a burlarse de ella y en ese momento se da cuenta de la situación, en ese preciso instante el avión empieza a fallar y todo se sale de control, casi todos mueren excepto linda y bradley que es su actual jefe en la empresa.

Ambos empiezan a hacerse daño y llega a un punto que el se dirige a un lugar donde ella le había dicho que no fuera porque había muchas espinas, lo cuál era mentira, realmente era una casa lujosa donde había comodidades y maneras de pedir ayuda. Bradley no puede creer lo que mira, entra y busca algún cuchillo o un arma con que atacar a linda, pero linda ya conoce todo el lugar, al discutir ella sale con un arma y el le dice que todo será diferente, que podría simular que nada había pasado, en ese momento le quita el arma y cuando dispara se da cuenta que no tiene balas, pues linda se la había quitado, ella lo derriba y lo mata con un palo de golf, ya luego pasan la escena de ya casi un año de ser rescata, ella jugando golf y siendo entrevistada de su vida exitosa y un cambio drástico de su vida, con buen auto y buen empleo, dejando atras todo lo que hizo en esa isla.

So I went in with mixed expectations on Descendants Wicked Wonderland, I loved The Rise of Red when it came out, so I wanted this one to at least match that energy, but sequels to musical fantasy movies can go either way. Thankfully, this one mostly delivered.

The movie picks up shortly after the events of The Rise of Red, exploring what happily ever after actually looks like for Red and Chloe once their time traveling adventure is over, that is actually one of my favorite things about it. Instead of just repeating the same "villain kid tries to fit into a new world" formula from the earlier films, this one leans into consequences, there is a warning at the end of Rise of Red about altering the fabric of time, and Wicked Wonderland actually follows through on that instead of ignoring it like a lot of sequels do.

Kylie Cantrall as Red and Malia Baker as Chloe are still the heart of the story, and their chemistry is honestly one of the strongest parts of the whole franchise at this point and what I liked here is that Red isn't the same rough, unsure VK from before. In interviews, Cantrall talked about wanting to show a different side of Red compared to how she started off in Rise of Red, and you can actually feel that growth on screen, she is more confident now, more willing to own her identity instead of constantly measuring herself against Auradon's standards.

This time the setting shifts properly into Wonderland itself, with the story bringing back familiar faces alongside new characters, which gives the whole movie a different visual flavor from the earlier films that were mostly Auradon Prep hallways and dorm drama, wicked wonderland gives the designers a lot more room to play with color and chaos, and it shows.

Rita Ora as the Queen of Hearts and Brandy as Cinderella both return too, and their scenes together carry more weight than you would expect from a Disney Channel movie, there is real history between those two characters at this point, spanning multiple films, and it actually pays off emotionally instead of feeling like fan service for the sake of it.

If I'm being honest, the plot does slow down a bit in the middle, once the initial excitement of being back in this world wears off, some scenes feel like they're just there to set up songs rather than move the story forward, that is a fair criticism of the franchise as a whole though, not just this one movie, If you are watching Descendants for tight plotting, you are watching the wrong franchise, you are here for the music, the costumes, the drama between VKs and royals, and honestly, the chaos of it all.

Overall, Wicked Wonderland does what a good sequel should do, It builds on what came before instead of just repeating it, gives its leads room to grow, and does not take the easy way out with its ending, not perfect, but a solid, fun watch if you've been following Red and Chloe's story from the start.

I need to get something off my chest right away... this movie got absolutely hammered by critics and audiences alike, and honestly, I think it deserved so much better than what it got. I watched this movie going in already braced for disappointment because of everything I'd previously heard ranging from the years-long troubled production to the reportedly enormous budget and then the box office numbers that came in almost embarrassingly low... yet I walked away actually loving it.. Sometimes the movie you expect to hate ends up being the one that surprises you the most... this was exactly what for me.

The story follows Hind, a seventh-century Arabian princess who refuses to become the concubine of a ruthless emperor and flees into the desert with her father, only to be hunted down by a relentless mercenary. Along the way, she's aided by a mysterious bandit named Hanzala and over the course of the film she transforms from a fugitive princess into a genuine warrior queen by uniting fractured, feuding tribes for a historic last stand... the Battle of Dhi Qar. It is a movie based on real events and real legend, which honestly gave the whole thing an extra layer of weight for me because I love when a historical epic actually roots itself in something real instead of just being pure fantasy dressed in period costume and knowing this battle actually shaped history made every escalating stake feel more meaningful.

Aiysha Hart is the reason this movie really landed for me. Watching Hind's transformation from a princess with no real power over her own life into someone commanding armies and uniting rival tribes - that arc genuinely moved me. There's a quiet ferocity to her performance that builds so gradually you don't even notice it happening until suddenly she's a completely different person on screen, and I found myself rooting for her completely by the film's second half. Anthony Mackie brings such a magnetic, roguish energy to Hanzala too... their chemistry together carries a lot of the film's emotional core, and I was genuinely invested in where their relationship was headed.

And visually? This movie is stunning. Say what you want about everything else, but the desert cinematography alone is worth the price of admissio... sweeping, sun-scorched vistas, gorgeously shot battle sequences, a real sense of scale to the world being built here. There's a tactile, grounded feel to the action too, nothing over-CGI'd into weightlessness.. when armies clash in the final battle, it feels like it actually matters, like real bodies are colliding rather than digital fodder.

I know a lot of people found the plot familiar, and yeah, I get it... there are definitely beats here you've seen in other historical epics before. But I didn't mind that at all because Sometimes I don't need a story to reinvent the wheel.... I just need it to execute the classic underdog-uniting-tribes-against-tyranny formula with conviction and heart... this movie does exactly that. I was fully swept up in it... invested in Hind's journey and moved by the sacrifices along the way... and was genuinely thrilled during the final battle.

Maybe I went in with lower expectations because of all the noise around its production troubles, and maybe that let me appreciate it with a clearer head than a lot of critics did. But taken purely as an emotional, sweeping historical epic, this one really worked for me. I walked away from it thinking about Hind's journey for days afterward, which is more than I can say for a lot of bigger, flashier blockbusters this year.

I don't even know how times I've watched The Vampire Diaries at this point, in fact i stopped counting after a while because it stopped feeling like something I need to keep track of, it is like a show I return to , the way you return to a favorite meal knowing exactly what you are getting but still enjoying every bite like its the first time.

That's the part about this show for me, Most things lose their magic after the second or third watch, the fact that you already know what happens , you already know who says what and somehow that knowledge kills the whole excitement , with The Vampire Diaries it doesn't work like that, every time I press play I feel the rush that I felt the very first time I saw it some years ago even when I had no idea what I was even getting into.

I think a big part of it , is the whole mess Elena mess with Stefan and Damon. I know, I know, everybody talks about that love triangle like it is the only thing the show has going for it, but honestly it earns the hype, Stefan is the careful kind of guy who thinks before he acts ,always trying to do the right thing even when it costs him , Damon is the opposite reckless sharp tongued doing whatever he wants and dealing with the consequences later, and watching Elena stuck between the two of them never gets tiring because The Vampire Diaries doesn't rush it, It lets you sit in the tension.

Then there's Mystic Falls itself, A small town that somehow has supernatural drama happening in it than should be legally allowed, Vampires, witches, werewolves, hybrids, doppelgangers you name it , this town has seen it, it should feel ridiculous honestly when you list it all out like that. The show makes it work because it never takes itself too seriously in the wrong way, It knows what it is.

What really gets me though is how show handles loss, this is a series that's not afraid to kill off characters you love and when it does, it actually makes you feel it, I know I have felt emotional many times especially rewatching certain episodes than I probably should admit, You would think knowing its coming would soften the blow, nope , It never does, If anything, watching it again just makes you appreciate the character more because now you know everything they were going to become everything that gets cut short.

Damon Salvatore deserves his paragraph honestly, He starts off as someone you are not even sure you are supposed to like and somewhere along the way without you noticing when he becomes one of the most compelling characters on television, His growth throughout show , from someone who barely cared about life to someone capable of real love and sacrifice is one of the best character arcs that I have seen, every rewatch I catch something about him that I missed before.

I think that is really the secret behind why show holds up well, there is always something to notice even in scenes you have watched a hundred times. A look, a line, a moment between characters that you didn't pay attention to before because you were too focused, on the main plot the first time around.

So yes I'll probably watch The Diaries again in a more few months, and I already know I'll feel the same way I always do, some kinds of shows you outgrow, but this one I don't think I ever will.
