I have been watching some historical movies recently, and I came across Hidden Figures (2016), and trust me, I didn't expect what I watched because I was expecting the movie to be about space only. But what I left with was something about courage, knowing what you stand for and your value when the world keeps trying to throw all shades of things, which was absolutely brilliant. Because watching this movie and how things were done back then, I was like, how many people with such a brilliant mindset were ignored just because they were colored? I didn't expect to go reading about the characters online after the movie ended. What I admire most about this movie, unlike others, is that it didn't make anyone the superhero or the villain. Instead, I saw how complicated we humans can be sometimes.

Though there were only a few characters in this movie, one of the characters that I noticed first was Katherine Johnson. I admire her confidence even though it wasn't loud, and that was very difficult to ignore about her. Right from a very young age, she has been solving difficult mathematics, yet she strives for more anywhere she finds herself because she doesn't want to feel less.

What I love deeply about this movie is that she knew her worth and what she was capable of doing, and she never allowed people's opinions to shut her down or put her aside. She strived for excellence even when she was the only Black lady in the room. The two other characters that were also closer to Katherine Johnson were Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan, two other inspiring characters that changed a lot about NASA.

For me, this movie won't be complete without the supporting character like Al Harrison, who was the boss of Katherine and also gave her the opportunity to prove herself, even though he was hard at first. Also, Vivian Mitchell and John Glenn demonstrated how difficult changes can look, especially when people have been surrounded and know what it means to be in an unfair system for so long. Some were stocked with their old beliefs, while some embraced the new beliefs.

What I categorically enjoyed most in this movie was when Al Harrison questioned Katherine about where she usually goes and why she's always late, and she explained the challenges of always running down the NASA campus for minutes just to use the "colored" restroom, and this scene became more interesting when Al went straight to the white restroom and broke the "white only" segregation sign with a crossbar while others watched him, and he told all of them that there are no more colored and everyone in his department is free to use the restroom without having to run some kilometers just to get access to the colored restroom. I also like the scene when John Glenn specifically asked for Katherine to check and confirm the numbers of the flight before he took off. I just felt so emotional watching that scene because she earned it.

I don't have any complaints about this movie because the little I had, I googled to confirm. And let me add this: a lot of people don't know their worth, but these three women that made the movie stood out for me: Katherine Johnson, who was a math genius right from a young age, made an unforgettable contribution to NASA that made flight trajectories to space possible and knowing exactly where and when they would land. Dorothy Vaughan, a woman with a very large heart, went ahead to teach herself the FORTRAN computer language when everything around NASA was changing and a lot were afraid that they could lose their jobs. She didn't keep this knowledge to herself; she taught others too and became the very first Black female supervisor in NASA. Mary Jackson was a very strong and resilient woman who stood against all odds that she was faced with and went ahead to become the first female Black engineer at NASA and contributed to the improvement of aircraft designs.

So, I will give this movie a 10/10 because these ladies' brilliance has nothing to do with skin type or race or gender. Their work alone didn't change a lot of things around NASA; it changed the system entirely till today because three women were courageous, brilliant, and knew their worth in a predominantly male environment that wasn't built to favor them. I won't waste time recommending this movie to anyone who enjoys inspiring true stories and learning how to know their worth.

With four episodes aired out of a total of eight that make up this miniseries, I assure you it will be one of the year's most outstanding productions. A number of elements work perfectly. There are series where everything seems to fit together flawlessly: the tone, the cast, the direction, the story, etc. This is one of them, and if you haven't started watching it yet, you're missing out on a great story.

To begin, it's necessary to have some context. The miniseries is an adaptation, with many changes, of course, of the 1987 film Black Widow, directed by Bob Rafelson and starring Debra Winger. These names might not ring a bell for younger viewers, but they were huge stars in their time. I remember the film because I saw it on VHS in the nineties. The original material is good, and this new adaptation, in miniseries format, is excellent.

Forget about the original film; they are two different productions, set in very different eras. The creator of the miniseries, Elizabeth Meriwether, has had other successful television shows, including the excellent miniseries The Dropout, about the real-life Theranos fraud. I recommended that miniseries some time ago in a post.

Victims of violence can become more violent. That's a line spoken in one of the episodes, and from a psychological perspective, it's true. If we analyze it, many people who have been victims of some kind of violence can develop a passive-aggressive state that can erupt when they find themselves in an extreme situation that triggers tension, activates memories, traumas, and so on.

I find it fascinating that the miniseries delves into the drama of the main characters, because they're handling it very well so far. The plot follows the new FBI agent, Alice Black, who was a police officer but left the force due to a history of violence. She's still haunted by this personal trauma, and in her first case with the FBI, she's assigned to hunt down what appears to be a serial killer. Alice's counterpart is Catherine Grace, a young woman who commits specific crimes, motivated by rather gruesome events in her past.

The story employs the typical tropes of this type of production: investigations, clues, secrets, superiors who seem incapable of solving anything, past mistakes, etc. There's nothing groundbreaking, but the story manages to give its characters well-defined personalities, clear motivations for their actions, and, of course, superb performances from the entire cast.

Emmy Rossum is phenomenal. Every shot, every gesture, every look. She is Alice Black, and she convincingly portrays the vulnerability stemming from her experiences in the police force. She's a very good actress; many only know her from Shameless, but she deserves more roles that allow her to shine as she does in this case. On the other hand, we have British actress Lola Petticrew as the serial killer. I already spoke highly of this actress when I reviewed the series Say Nothing. I have another series of hers, titled Trespasses, on my watchlist.

The story goes beyond the search for the serial killer; each character experiences their own dramas and problems, handled with fairness and realism, creating a deep connection between them. Surely, as the end approaches, the two protagonists will grow closer and, even though they're on opposite sides, perhaps they'll come to understand each other.

For now, I'm sure it will make my list of the best of the year, and I hope you'll watch it and tell me what you think in the comments.

Hay una serie de elementos que funcionan a la perfección. Existen series donde todo parece encajar a la perfección: el tono, el reparto, la dirección, la historia, etc. Esta es una de ellas, y si aún no la han empezado a ver, se están perdiendo una gran historia.

Para empezar, es necesario tener contexto. La miniserie es una adaptación, con muchos cambios, por supuesto, de la película de 1987 titulada Black Widow, del director Bob Rafelson, protagonizada por Debra Winger. La trama sigue a la nueva agente del FBI, Alice Black, quien fue policía pero dejó el cuerpo debido a un historial de violencia. Todavía la persigue este trauma personal y, en su primer caso con el FBI, se le asigna la tarea de dar caza a lo que parece ser una asesina en serie. La contraparte de Alice es Catherine Grace, una joven que comete crímenes específicos, cuyo motivo radica en sucesos bastante espeluznantes de su pasado.

La historia emplea los recursos típicos de este tipo de producciones: investigaciones, pistas, secretos, superiores que parecen incapaces de resolver nada, errores del pasado, etc. No hay nada novedoso, pero la historia logra dotar a sus personajes de personalidades bien definidas, motivaciones claras para sus acciones y, por supuesto, actuaciones magníficas de todo el elenco.

Emmy Rossum está fenomenal. Cada plano, cada gesto, cada mirada. Ella es Alice Black, y resulta convincente en su interpretación de la vulnerabilidad derivada de sus experiencias en la policía. Es una muy buena actriz; muchos solo la conocen por Shameless, pero merece más papeles que le permitan brillar como lo hace en este caso. Supergirl is a movie that works perfectly as a family outing, and it can be fun and hilarious for the little ones at home. On the other hand, older audiences view it differently; knowing the history it is based on, its background, and the artists, directors, and writers in charge of its development, we build higher expectations that can lead to disappointment.

Following the success of the latest and newest Superman film in the new DC universe, it is expected that whatever comes next will be just as good or better. At the end of that movie, Kara Zor-El was introduced, who in this new story spends her time hopping between red sun planets just to get drunk. Accompanied by Krypto the dog, she goes through an existential crisis because she survived while her parents did not, due to kryptonite contamination that infected a remnant of her people.

Her disastrous lifestyle is interrupted when some crooks steal her ship and poison Krypto, forcing her to chase them down to get the antidote. She becomes tied to a young girl who wants revenge because those exact same thugs murdered her family. The two of them set off on a search, turning it into an adventure full of pain, hatred, and discovery.

All of this sounds great as a premise, but unfortunately, it is not innovative. It uses a trope we have been seeing for decades, making the movie feel like it does not quite work. Perhaps it would have worked really well twenty years ago when superheroes were not so abundant, but it feels like it takes pieces from other movies—it even felt like I was watching a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.

I think Craig Gillespie tried, but he missed the mark here. He is famous for telling stories about characters with dark humor, but none of them were superheroes. He wanted to apply that trend to this film, turning Kara into an antihero when in the comic, Woman of Tomorrow, which it is based on, she is noble and inspiring. He created a cynical character who decides to put aside her near godlike powers just to feel pain, which seemed like a misstep to me.

I must confess I liked the inclusion of Lobo in this story, and I thought the casting was spot-on with Jason Momoa. When he appears, I finally started enjoying the movie right when I was beginning to get bored with Supergirl's rebellious teenager attitude, bringing chaos and comedy. I would have liked them to give him more screen time.

Milly Alcock does not do a bad job at all, in my opinion. Despite the hate she has received for her physical appearance on social media, I think the character fits her well. Overall, it is an average movie that can be fun if you watch it without thinking about whether the adaptation is faithful to the original story.

For those who might need a little context, Stranger Things plunged us right into Hawkins, Indiana, from the start, blending 80s nostalgia with dark supernatural mysteries, a group of kids facing impossible odds, and government conspiracies (with my absolute favorite duo, Dustin and Steve, carrying half the show!). However, by its fourth season, the series takes a masterclass turn, and "Dear Billy" becomes the absolute turning point—the pinnacle episode where everything explodes on both an emotional and narrative level. Atmosphere and Homages / Atmósfera y Homenajes

What hooks me the most is how they recreate that eighties atmosphere without falling into cheap nostalgia or a pretty postcard vibe; here the period feels alive, claustrophobic, and tactile. On one hand, they throw a brutal homage to classic slasher films by bringing in none other than Robert Englund as Victor Creel, and on the other, they pull off a film buff detail that blew my mind: that dark hallway in Pennhurst Asylum, with patients screaming on either side as Nancy and Robin walk through, is an exact carbon copy of when Clarice Starling goes to see Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Those little nods are what totally win you over!

Por un lado te tiran ese homenaje brutal al slasher clásico trayendo al mismísimo Robert Englund como Victor Creel, y por el otro se marcan un detalle de cinéfilos que me flipó: ese pasillo oscuro en el psiquiátrico de Pennhurst, con los pacientes gritando a los lados mientras Nancy y Robin avanzan, es un calco exacto de cuando Clarice Starling va a ver a Hannibal Lecter en The Silence of the Lambs. ¡Son esos guiños los que te ganan por completo!

I swear the tension doesn't let you breathe for a single second.

Good thing the writers knew we were heading straight for a heart attack, because the comic relief they drop in Pennhurst is pure gold. Watching Robin rattle off a monologue a mile a minute to secure the visit, while trying not to collapse from pure nervousness, killed me with laughter! We desperately needed that breather before crashing headfirst into the abyss.

Menos mal que los guionistas sabían que íbamos directas al infarto, porque el alivio cómico que meten en Pennhurst es oro puro. ¡Ver a Robin soltando un monólogo a mil por hora para conseguir la visita mientras intenta no colapsar de los nervios me mató de la risa! The Ultimate Climax / El Clímax Absoluto

And then... well, then comes the crowning moment. Talking about Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill is already intense, but experiencing it here was so powerful that I ended up adding it straight to my personal playlist. Seeing how they use it as a literal bridge to pull her out of the darkness is a massive punch to the gut. Verses like "If I only could, I'd make a deal with God..." break your soul while you watch Lucas, Dustin, and Steve desperately trying to hit play on the boombox.

Y entonces... bueno, entonces llega el momento cumbre. Hablar de Running Up That Hill de Kate Bush ya es fuerte, la sentí tan intensa al punto de que tuve que ponerla en mi lista de reproducción. Ver cómo la usan como un puente literal para sacarla de la oscuridad es un tremendo palo. Versos como "If I only could, I'd make a deal with God..." te parten el alma mientras ves a Lucas, Dustin y Steve desesperados intentando atinar con el radiocasete.

All of this holds together thanks to Sadie Sink's titanic performance. She doesn't need long speeches; with just her looks, her body language, and that palpable panic, she leaves you frozen in your tracks. And as a fun fact that blew my mind: Dacre Montgomery filmed all of his parts via Zoom from Australia due to pandemic restrictions! Pulling off that brutal chemistry and tension with a green screen and pure editing magic is worthy of a standing ovation.

Todo esto se sostiene gracias al trabajo titánico de Sadie Sink. No necesita grandes discursos; con las puras miradas, su lenguaje corporal y ese pánico palpable, te deja helada en el sitio. Y como dato curioso que me voló la cabeza: ¡Dacre Montgomery grabó todo lo suyo por Zoom desde Australia por las restricciones de la pandemia! Que lograran esa química brutal y esa tensión con un croma y pura magia de edición es digno de aplauso de pie.

Anyway, "Dear Billy" is a masterpiece from start to finish—a work of art about mental health and friendship that leaves your heart in your mouth.

From Screen to Living Room / De la Pantalla al Salón

This episode left me so shaken and with my head spinning so much that I needed to channel all that energy somehow. At that moment, two of my greatest passions collided: my absolute love for this series and my passion for crochet. Honestly, making the amigurumi wasn't an easy project, but it wasn't super hard either—maybe it was just fueled by the sheer excitement of having my very own mini Demogorgon! Stitch by stitch, giving shape to that open mouth with its teeth, look what I put together.

Este episodio me dejó tan marcada y con la cabeza dándole vueltas que necesitaba canalizar toda esa energía de alguna forma. En ese punto exacto chocaron dos de mis más grandes pasiones: mi devoción por esta serie y el crochet. Honestamente, lo del amigurumi no fue un proyecto fácil pero tampoco tan difícil, ¡quizás era por la emoción que sentía de tener mi propio mini Demogorgon! Entre puntada y puntada, dándole forma a esa boca abierta con sus dientes, ¡miren lo que me armé tejiendo!

It was my way of bringing a little piece of that world home—doesn't it look awesome? Every time I see it on the shelf, I instantly remember Max's run. It's proof of how powerful a good story can be and how art inspires more art.

That’s why He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is here—it took everyone by surprise. Plus, this is a franchise that debuted many years ago, and the main character is one of pop culture’s most famous heroes, one who, above all, shaped the childhoods of so many. This new movie, which has exceeded all expectations, is a blend of excitement and nostalgia—every second of it is worth it.

Lo bueno de las películas es que siempre van a llegar nuevos estrenos, que traen muchos recuerdos, como tambien para seguir con una aventura o simplemente para mostrar cosas nuevas que marcan la diferencia de una antes y un después de ser estrenada. Por eso llega He-Man y los Masters del Universo, quien sorprendió a todos, además esta es una franquicia que salió hace muchos años y el personaje central es uno de los héroes más famosos de cultura pop y sobre todo marca la infancia de muchos. Con esta nueva película que logró supera todas las expectativas es una mezcla entre emoción y nostalgia, que cada segundo de la misma vale la pena.

The film maintains that classic style, and right from the start you can see the vast world of Eternia, as well as each of the scenes, which are full of vibrant colors and create a sense of intrigue that anything could happen, as do the various creatures, breathtaking landscapes, and, of course, the eternal struggle between good and evil. This gives the film much more impact and makes it incredibly exciting, since the whole experience feels like a journey that leads us to wonder: Will he be able to reclaim his legacy?

Another aspect that sets this film apart is the various battles he must fight; beyond the action, they’re charged with deep emotion—especially when you witness battles that are crucial to the film’s development—a quality unique to this genre. Furthermore, instead of just portraying heroes, the film highlights the side that everyone can relate to—doubt, fear, and moments when one feels unprepared for such a huge responsibility—making the story feel authentic.

Each character has a compelling backstory and a role to play, but throughout the film, you can see just how crucial teamwork is to achieving their goals. Here, He-Man is the main protagonist—a hero to many—yet he allows the other characters to shine as well, helping to make the adventure feel more complete, thanks to the bonds of friendship, loyalty, and courage that are forged.

La película mantiene ese estilo clásico y desde un principio se puede ver ese gran mundo de Eternia, como también cada una de las escenas que están llenas de muchos colores y se crea esa intriga de que cualquier cosa puede pasar, al igual que las distintas criaturas, paisajes impresionantes y, por supuesto, la eterna lucha entre el bien y el mal, logrando que la película tome mucha más fuerza y sea muy emocionante, ya que todo es como un viaje y eso nos lleva a preguntarnos ¿Podrá recuperar su legado?

Otras de las cosas que marcan la diferencia en esta película son las distintas batallas que tiene que hacer, puesto que más allá de golpear están cargadas de mucha emoción y sobre todos al ver batallas que son de gran importancia en el desarrollo de la misma, siendo algo que solamente este tipo de películas lo tienen. Además, en vez de mostrar a los héroes, muestra ese lado de que toda persona puede llegar a tener y es la duda, miedo y momentos en los que parece no estar preparado para una responsabilidad tan grande, logrando que se sienta real.

Cada personaje tiene una gran historia y una responsabilidad en la misma, pero a lo largo de la película se puede notar esa gran importancia de trabajar en equipo para así poder llegar lejos. Aquí He-Man es el gran protagonista, siendo el héroe para muchos y este permite que los demás personajes también tengan su espacio y ayudan a que la aventura se sienta más completa, puesto que es esa amistad, lealtad y valentía que se crea.

I really liked the result of this great movie, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe—it was a wonderful surprise and, at the same time, a production full of adventure, nostalgia, and excitement. Plus, when you watch it, you’ll realize that there will always be heroes who go down in history, and it will bring back many memories—it’s a movie you’ll enjoy from start to finish. It’s perfect for all ages, which is why you can’t miss this new movie.

Me gusto mocho el resultado de esta gran película He-Man y los Masters del Universo, siendo una gran sorpresa y a la vez una producción que tiene aventura, nostalgia y la emoción. Además, al verla te darás cuenta de que siempre habrá héroes que van a quedar para la historia, al igual te vendrán muchos recuerdos, siendo una película que disfrutarás de principio a fin. Es perfectamente para toda las edades y por eso no puedes dejar pasar esta nueva película.

This K series took me on a full rollercoaster of emotions, from laughing so hard in the beginning to being confused out of my mind by the end.

The story follows Kang Dan-shim, a cunning and ambitious woman from the Joseon dynasty who becomes infamous at the royal court for her manipulation and scheming, Eventually the king she served sentences her to death, and just when you think that is the end of her story, she wakes up centuries later in modernday Seoul, inside the body of a nameless actress named Shin Seo-ri, so basically, a Joseon-era villain gets a second chance at life in a completely different world, and she has no idea how any of it works.

The first stretch of episodes were honestly some of the funniest Kdrama content I have watched in a long time, Watching Seo-ri, who is really Dan-shim underneath, try to navigate modern Seoul was hilarious, she does not understand technology, she does not understand modern social norms, and everything from ordering food to using a phone becomes this whole comedic event, I was living for the fish out of water trope here, it never gets old for me, she also had this whole thing with spending money on sweets and food and constantly running out of cash, which made her feel so real and relatable despite literally being from a different century.

Then there is Cha Se-gye, the ruthless modern day chaebol heir who ends up crossing paths with her. He is calculated, cold, and used to controlling every outcome around him in business, but Seo-ri, or should I say Dan-shim, is the one person who does not play by his rules, mostly because she does not even understand what his rules are, their dynamic starts as pure clash, enemies who cannot stand each other, but slowly it turns into this really compelling connection where she realizes he might be the only person who can help her rewrite her fate, and he realizes there is more to her than he expected.

The two main actors, Lim Ji-yeon and Heo Nam-jun were great together, their scenes were perfect together they had a mix of funny and serious moments and I always looked forward to seeing them together more than anything else happening in the plot.

Now here is where I have to be honest, because the second half of this drama took a turn I was not fully ready for, what started as this fun, lighthearted fish out of water story slowly folded into time travel complications, past life reveals, family intrigue, and murder plots, I did not mind the story getting more serious, dramas are allowed to evolve, but the way everything piled on top of each other made it start to feel less like the show I fell in love with in the beginning.

And then there is the ending, which honestly is where I struggled the most, I did not like how it ended with her going into a coma while he was still at the hospital, waiting, and everything just felt so rushed and unclear at that point, I remember watching that part and just feeling confused, like I had to rewind and rewatch scenes to understand what was actually happening and what it meant for both of them, It did not give me the emotional closure I wanted after everything they had been through together, after investing in their whole enemies to lovers journey, I expected the ending to hit harder, to feel earned, and instead it left me with more questions than answers.

I also think part of my confusion came from how quickly the story tried to wrap up so many threads at once, the time travel logic, the past life connections, the family drama, and their romance, all within the same final stretch, it felt like too much was happening too fast, and the emotional weight of the coma scene got lost in trying to explain everything else going on around it.

But even with all of that, I do not regret watching this drama the first half was great it made me laugh and I loved watching Shin Seo-ri and Cha Se-gyes relationship grow, it was all worth it, all of that gave me genuine joy while it lasted, sometimes a drama does not need a perfect ending to still be worth the time you invested into it.

If you like stories, about reincarnation and romance and characters who have chemistry you might like this drama it is still worth watching.
