Watching romcoms from years past, might just become one of my favorite pastimes. I’ve watched quite a lot, and they’ve pleased me to the point that I just look forward to watching whatever, as long as it’s a romantic comedy, and it’s release date, dates back to the early 2000s.
Needing a break from binge watching so many kdramas in such short span of time, I decided to watch something different. I scrolled through all the movies I had downloaded, and since this looked the least intense, I settled for it. Read on, while I review the movie ‘27 dresses’.
27 dresses is a 2008 American romcom, starring Katherine Heigl, James Marsden and Malin Akerman. The movie opens with little Jane and Tess, two sisters at their first wedding. Both girls, happen to be with the bride in her dressing room that morning, when her dress gets torn suddenly. With their help, the dress is amended, and from that experience Jane realizes her love for weddings.
All grown up, two of Jane’s friends are wedding on the same day, and Jane has to be present at both parties to support her friends. She juggles being at both weddings, going back and forth, helping both friends, and making sure she’s present at both weddings. Exhausted after both weddings, Jane forgets her diary in a cab she shared with a young man - Kevin. The return of said diary marks the beginning of their not-so-cute meetings - Mr. Marriage is a bondage affair, meets Miss Romantic, who’s been a bridesmaid at 27 weddings, and looks forward to her own big day. Just who is going to conform to the other’s belief seeing how swiftly their hate is transitioning?
I’ve had this movie downloaded for a while now, and I always chose not to watch it simply because the person who recommended it to me, told me it was ‘just there’. Learning this information made me pull away countless times, after all, there were always other better movies to watch, so why waste time watching a movie that was just there? Well, this movie that was described as ‘just there’, ended up wowing me, to the extent that I wished its runtime could be extended so I’ll spend more time with the characters.
Being a sucker for romance, it’s always a delight, seeing the genre acted out just right, like it’s told in the books. It was such a pleasure seeing the tension and the misunderstanding between Jane and Kevin transition. The plot of this movie was such that you knew what the end result was going to be, but the need to know how it happened, overrides the fact that it’s predictable. From the relationship between the sisters, to friendship, and to romance, this movie explored these different relationships, portraying them in such a way that you can’t help but admire.
Jane was a nice character. Having gone through all she experienced, she acted accordingly so I wasn’t particularly smitten by her. I liked her nonetheless. There was Kevin. He acted out so much at the beginning, that it was weird piecing who he was at the start of the film, to who he became at the end. He was cool though. Tess had me hating for a while. She was so irrational, and I couldn’t help the irritation that bubbled up every now and then, at seeing her be who she is. I didn’t hate her for long though. I think that’s what made this film the beauty that it was. You didn’t feel just one emotion from start to finish. I loved the storyline more than I did the characters, and I’m sure you can tell.
There were crazy scenes for sure. Scenes that had me asking my screen ‘what just happened right now?’ Some left me wide eyed, and some left me giggling at the incredulity of the situations. However, the blend of comedy and romance was everything here. For a movie that was described as just there, it was a 7.5 out of 10 in my opinion. Seeing how we’re polar opposites when it comes to movie tastes, I look forward to watching more movies recommended by this person, because I sure had a good time with this.
