I swore not to watch this movie because I knew it would affect me. Japanese stories of impossible or complicated love are always a dagger for me. I understand that its director, Makoto Shinkai, is an expert in these themes, but (I repeat) I try to stay away from his films (but I'm a masochist, and he's winning the battle to see the others). With this film, Kimi no na wa (Your Name), he had more than twenty nominations and a dozen awards; already with that "preview" for those of us who had not seen it, he tells us how good it will be.

    A dreamy story.

Who hasn't woken up with the strange feeling of having lost something very precious? Well, that's what happens to Taki and Mitsuha. Two teenagers who live in different cities, with different dreams, but who come together in a very strange way: they exchange bodies some nights, while they sleep. Suddenly, these exchanges stop happening.

    sep2.jpg

    sep1.jpg

    sep1.jpg

    What happened yesterday?

These kids don't know when all this madness of exchange began, but they all notice each other's strange behavior and they can't remember what happened at the beginning. Little by little they discovered ways in which they could communicate and in order not to damage each other's daily lives, they set certain rules.

    sep2.jpg

    Wishes that are fulfilled.

Mitsuha is a small town student from Itomori, daughter of the mayor and although she does not live with him, she has a great responsibility within the community. She has always wanted to get out of that small town where nothing is interesting to her, although her grandmother tries to teach her and her younger sister the importance of every tradition in this community, her wish is that in another life she can live in Tokyo.

    sep2.jpg

    "Musubi" is everything.

Something that manages to attract attention is the time when there will be a star shower. This happens every 1200 years, so in the village where Mitsuha lives, everyone prepares for the event. One day before it happens, the grandmother and her granddaughters go to a temple in the mountains to bring an offering to their god. The grandmother is wise, and noticed the changes in her granddaughter, so in the middle of the trip, she was explaining what "Musubi" meant (a term that is linked to the myth of the Red Thread) in an attempt to make Taki, in her granddaughter's body, understand certain things about what was happening to them. From this point on, I was hooked on the film, because I am a faithful lover of this "myth", and something told me to get ready because it was coming hard (and it did).

    sep2.jpg

    sep1.jpg

    5.jpg

    sep1.jpg

    Timelessness.

In a very subtle way, we realize that Taki and Mitsuha are not in the same timeline, but the moment they tell us openly, that's when the strong part begins. Mitsuha tells him that in a few hours they will be able to see the star shower and he hopes that "they can see it together", something that surprised Taki, as they had not been warned about any star shower in those days. They suddenly stop exchanging bodies and Taki starts looking for where the village where Mitsuha is, but when he manages to find Itomori, his world falls apart. The star shower had happened three years ago and one of them broke off and fell into the village, there were no survivors left.

    sep2.jpg

    Atemporalidad.

    Taki we are many.

The affection for the characters is such that it's impossible not to feel and suffer like Taki all that time, not knowing if he was crazy, losing his memory about Mitsuha, what he was looking for, all those feelings were... familiar. It's like that feeling when you had a really good dream, you wake up and you're like, "how nice everything, I liked it... What happened?". The mind erases in fractions of seconds (or for the lucky ones, minutes), those dreams that we liked so much and we are left with the feeling that something was empty. And that is what Taki transmits to us, he makes us feel it in the flesh, and I don't deny it, I even cried desperately with him (as it doesn't cost me that much).

    sep2.jpg

    Taki somos muchos.

    sep1.jpg

    7.jpg

    sep1.jpg

    A second chance.

Shinkai, the director, plays with our emotions so much that he gets to the point where we don't even care or wonder how or why all this is happening? It leads us to focus on the only thing that matters to us: if they were to meet again. The grandmother's words were not in vain, they resonated in Taki's mind and he went in search of answers in that temple they went to leave the offerings, with only one wish: to have a second chance with Mitsuha. At that moment he remembered that they had already met, years ago when Mitsuha went to look for him in Tokyo, and it was she who had given him her hair ribbon, the same one he wore as a bracelet always, although he did not remember who had given it to him (everything alludes to the Red Thread). Somehow she exchanges with Mitsuha again, and will do everything she can to prevent the entire town of Itomori from disappearing along with her and her family. Here the grandmother has an important moment again because she recognizes that she was not her granddaughter again, she explains to Taki the history of her family, and we learn, at last, why it is that this is happening to her granddaughter and him.

    sep2.jpg

    sep1.jpg

    sep1.jpg

    Crossing the border.

While Taki and Mitsuha's friends were already making a plan to save the village, he goes to the temple again, if he left his body there before falling asleep, he should find it again with Mitsuha. The two were there, in the same place, facing each other, but still in different times. They vowed to wake up again and remember their names to look for each other later, but they failed to write them down in their hands. Mitsuha struggles to keep it in her mind and keep going with her plan, but it is useless because in the middle of everything, she forgets her name, although she still feels she must keep doing the impossible to save everyone she can and herself.

    sep2.jpg

    sep1.jpg

    Looking for something or someone.

Taki had forgotten her, along with all the memories that had to do with Mitsuha. But the emptiness in his chest, drove him to look for things about the town where she lived, even if he didn't know what, everything about the star shower and the disaster caught his attention, even if the years had passed. He was always trying to remember or understand why he felt that way, but he couldn't find answers, until he saw Mitsuha and she saw him, they were both smitten without understanding why, but they knew they were the answer to the questions they asked each other.

    sep2.jpg

    Buscando algo o alguien.

The magic of the whole story surpasses the fantasy of it, adding the impressive animations and the soundtrack, made this movie a perfect work of art. I don't want to imagine what Shinkai's others will be like, for fear of offending by expecting less or being similar to some of the hundreds of films about complicated and fated loves that I have seen. It plays with the beautiful and the sadness of nostalgia because it knows that everyone (or most) has gone through something like this in their dreams, and even, with someone (of course, I don't mean time travel or swapping bodies, obviously). The depiction of the landscapes is impressive, it makes you transport you to the magical places of Itomori, even the busy panorama in Tokyo is impeccable. I would go so far as to say that it has become my new favorite Japanese animated film. It may seem like a typical teen romance, but Shinkai takes it to an impressive level and make the plot based on the famous Red Thread myth, which makes it even better (personally speaking). So if you ask me, get enough tissues, you'll need them and as I always say: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have, see it again, you can't miss it at all."

    sep2.jpg

  2. CineTV Contest: Foreign Cinema - "Your Name" is an unforgettable romantic anime film@dedicatedguy1832d

I have enjoyed watching movies since I was a little kid like most people, but it wasn't until the past few years when I really became interested in getting familiar with this industry and learning about the best actors, actresses, directors, and writers.

Coupled with this learning process about the film industry, I also started to appreciate genres that I either didn't like in the past or was simply not interested in watching. Some specific example of this is the drama and the biographical genres. In the past, I wasn't really interested them but now, I really enjoy watching films that belong to those genres. Something similar happened with the romance genre although I still am very cautious before watching a romantic movie.

When it comes to anime, I loved it when I was a child like most kids. Dragon Ball and Pokemon were 2 of my favorite shows and as I became a grown-up I stopped watching anime altogether. For a while, I thought this type of production didn't have much to offer but boy how wrong I was.

I don't exactly remember the production that sparked my interest in anime once again, I think it was probably either the Ghost in the Shell anime movie or the suspense series called Another. I then started to watch other anime productions and discovered some excellent ones such as the Parasyte series and the Steins;Gate series. Eventually, I became hooked and now I consider myself a big fan of anime.

There is one anime creator that really blew my mind with his romantic stories. I am talking about Makoto Shinkai. The guy who has created several excellent anime films such as Weathering with You, The Garden of Words, and 5 Centimeters Per Second, this one is particularly touching. He has another film that I consider not only his best work so far, but also a masterpiece in the genres of romance and anime, this film is called Your Name.

What is Your Name all about and why did I enjoy it so much?

Your Name is a story about a teenage boy and girl living in Japan but in different cities. One day they magically discover they have a deep and inexplicable link, this is when a bit of scifi and comedy makes its appearance by the way, and this link will completely change their lives in ways they cannot comprehend. If you have watched the Netflix series from the Wachowskis called Sense8, the characters of that series have a similar link between them. Similar, but not entirely the same.

The film has very intense moments and beautiful songs as soundtracks. I never thought an anime production could make me feel so many emotions but Your Name proved to me it was possible. Scifi is an important aspect of this story, but there is also a bit of comedy, as mentioned before, coupled with the typical silliness in a lot of anime productions, especially at the beginning of the film, and there are also very dramatic moments. Ultimately, this is a romantic story that I honestly believe most people will enjoy. I am not exaggerating when I say this film has moments that rival those of major romantic Hollywood productions. There is even a Hollywood live-action remake in the works but I doubt it will be able to reach the level of intensity in the original anime production.

The way this film mixes several genres to produce a unique experience was very enjoyable to watch. When the film is starting some people might think this will be a silly story, because while the 2 main characters discover and get used to their link, a lot of stupid things happen. But as the story keeps advancing, and the scope of it is slowly revealed, the viewers will realize this isn't a normal story, this is a masterpiece with unforgettable moments.

    your name 1.jpg

    Source

One of the reasons why I am able to effortlessly enjoy foreign productions is because I got used to watching movies and series with subtitles since I was little. My main language is Spanish, and the most common language in movies and series is obviously English. Reading subtitles is something I needed to do in order to enjoy most of the stories I wanted to watch. In the beginning, when I was very small and I wasn't able to read fast enough it was difficult and frustrating, but this problem got solved as I became an older kid capable of reading faster.

Among the main differentiation of anime compared to the films I am used to watching on a constant basis is that in anime there is a lot of silly moments included as an attempt to make the viewer laugh or simply an attempt to make the viewer feel familiar with the characters. Sometimes it works, other times not so much. In the case of Your Name, I think the silly moments were completely appropriate and complement the story very well.

Animated movies tend to be related to stories for kids and younger audiences, but that's not always the case. Anime has great stories that aren't meant for kids and are as enjoyable as normal live-action productions. With anime, I believe it is also a bit easier to produce a film or series because there is no risk in having actors or actresses doing mistakes while on camera. This should speed up the process of creating a film and allow the creators to produce more movies or series in a shorter time span.

    Final thoughts

Anime can be a serious genre, there are excellent productions with a big variety of genres, including genres that require a level of seriousness to be properly enjoyed by the audience. The series Another is an excellent suspenseful anime story, The Ghost in the Shell is one of the best serious scifi stories ever created, and Makoto Shinkai mixes the romantic, and sometimes action and scifi genres to create unique and very enjoyable stories.

People who don't take anime into consideration when deciding what to watch are really depriving them of several masterpieces. Your Name is the prime example that this genre can deliver very touching, original, and emotional stories.

I would like to finish this post by sharing one of the many beautiful songs this movie has. This one is a piano song and a very lovely one:

This was my entry for the CineTV contest about foreign cinema, if you want to learn more about this contest you can do so by reading the original post.

👀 | Mi punto de vista | My point of view | 👀

The movie starts with a lot of flashes and scenes that left me charged with information, the only thing I could do was to keep watching because if something did not disappoint me were **the landscapes and scenes.

The first character to appear is the girl, Mitsuha Miyamizu, she lives in a small town with her grandmother and little sister, she goes to high school with her two friends Tessie and Sayaka.

She's bored of her life in the village where there is nothing else for her except friends, family and tradition. 2.jpg Source

She mysteriously switches bodies with a boy, Taki Tachibana, who is from the capital of Tokyo, attends high school, lives with his father and works as a waiter.

He just lives his life as normally as he can, between school, work, his friends and his crush. What a surprise awaits him!

They switch lives sometimes, adapting to each other's lifestyles and causing changes, quite noticeable to their friends and family.

In the middle of the movie, the strangest and coolest plot twist occurs, Taki learns of a situation that affects Mitsuha and because of the recent mixed feelings, he will do his best to help her.

Me alegro haberme equivocado

I really underestimated this movie, I thought it would be boring, that it would be typical and cloying. I'm glad I was wrong.

1.- Friendship is for me the point that stands out the most, to see how the main characters share and trust their friends is magnificent.

2.- The care for tradition is an aspect that I see Japan keeping sacredly, the grandmother inspires those roots that connects them blindly with their ancestors and with the universe.

3.- The search for the other is an element that is maintained throughout the film, that feeling of loss that they try to fill is intertwined with the red thread of destiny that unites them. 4.jpg Source

4.- Time and Destiny, I love how they take this theme and overlap them, blend them, melt them together and turn them into a beautiful theme of Makoto Shinkai's work.

I'll take a moment to tell you that if you watch this movie, pay special attention to the music that accompanies it.

I'm not the best person to talk about music, but if you watch this link you will understand and appreciate the music as much as I do.

Full of sharp cuts that accompany the scenes, a clear sound that marks special scenes and a melody that is easy to recognize, make for beautiful music!

The scenery is another topic, I think already loved Makoto Shinkai in another review post but this one certainly takes visual effects to another level.

    5.jpg Screenshot of the movie

    Movie.png

Contrary to what happened with the Garden of Words, this movie should have "Romance" even on the poster hehe. I feel that this movie embraces love as a fundamental element in personal development.

Sincerely, I invite you to watch it, it lasts almost two hours but it's soooo enjoyable that time flies, especially if you manage to enjoy the scenery and melodies.

At beginning, probably you will be confused because they are just random scenes, but when you keep watching it, everything makes sense and you actively identify with the characters.

Personally, it reminded me of my desire to go study in the capital.

In my opinion, it will be 10 points out of 10.

To give a 10 I have to think "Would I watch it again? " and without a doubt this is one I could watch over and over again, until I learn the songs.
