  1. 🎬 2025 Movie #2 | A Different Man (2024)@screenjournal539d

    Image

I'm keeping this blog as a personal journal of all the movies I watch during a year. The ratings that I give on each of them is fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews.

To start off, I think I would have enjoyed this movie a bit more if I knew nothing about it and without watching the trailer mainly because an element of surprise was gone with it. This said a Different Man was the 2nd movie I watched this year after Heretic. I had probably a bit too high expectations on this one both because it's another A24 movie which almost always are good and original and because of the way it was pitched to my by a friend which sounded like a movie which I potentially could really like. It didn't fully turn out that way as I wasn't fully sold on everything and the 2nd Part of the movie was a bit weaker. However, I did learn something from this one.

    A Different Man (6.9/10)

Movie Plot: The way it was pitched to me is that it is a movie about a man with a condition why he's ugly which affects his self-esteem. He undergoes a experimental treatment that gets him fully cured looking normal thinking it would solve all his problems. Soon after he meets someone with the same condition who despite it is very self-confident showing that looks alone isn't solving everything.

While this premise to me has everything to be a great movie, I however didn't find that he was that extremely low in self-esteem and the moment he got a normal face he went out and immediately was making out with a girl and more that night which just felt totally unrealistic to me. I did like the 2nd actor with the disease (Adam Pearson) who apparently really has it while the first time he appeared in the movie I thought 'That's Some Bad Overt The Top CGI'

I found a big part of the movie to be just a bit too 'artsy' with the neighbor and the play she was writing which is a world that I less relate to. I also wasn't paying enough attention at times as there apparently was a time gap somewhere after the main character changed. The movie for me also was just a bit too long dragging on in the 2nd part.

Overall I'm glad that I watched it as I was too curious after hearing the plot even though I probably would not recommend it to myself at this point. The main thing I learned is that this proteus syndrome actually exists (It's the same as in the famous Elephant Man movie (which I have never watched). Based on everything I still give it a respectable 6.9/10 just under the level where I can say I liked the movie.

  2. A different man (2024): Movie Review@miguelpeliculas543d

I really liked the premise of this film, because it teaches us that not everything is based on the physique, but more on the attitude we take towards life, seeing how a man named Edward, with a rare medical condition called neurofibromatosis, a disease which produces tumors in nervous tissue, disfiguring the person, and can produce mental, hearing, or even cardiovascular disorders, faces life before and after a revolutionary treatment, which gives it a normal appearance.

And after getting a normal appearance, we see how Edward excels in the world of real estate, becoming almost a celebrity in his area of work, and in his social life also goes much better, getting affairs with different women. But one day, he sees a play in his neighborhood, where his last friend seeks to represent his life before the change, because he faked his own death, leading him to discover more aspects of his life, how he looked at himself, and how others did.

Sinopsis según FilmAffinity / Synopsis according FilmAffinity:

"Ambitious New York actor Edward undergoes radical surgery to drastically transform his appearance. As a result, many things change in his life, yet everything remains disturbingly the same. Even though he has changed outwardly and is able to start a new life, he is still who he is and not who he wants to be. Then the role of her life is lost and her new dreamy face becomes a nightmare."

Once he meets someone who suffers from the same condition, his life begins to lose its course, as he realizes that his condition is not a limitation, depending on how you face life. By the second act, the story becomes very bizarre, and this takes away a lot of weight from the film, which was doing very well, Edward's sinking into hell is very dark, because of his envy he ends up injured in his four limbs, ending up in jail in a very sad way, while Oswald ends up having a perfect life in his own way, contrasting both ways of seeing the world.

Despite this uneven speech, where we can clearly separate the film into part 1 and 2, the individual performance of the actors was very good, seeing Sebastian Stan possibly in his best performance to date, seeing him go through all the phases of Edward, until he reaches madness, showing a very sensitive side of what envy is. Adam Pearson plays the counterpart, confident and vivacious, with a very interesting way of looking at life, something that is simple for him, as he was born with this neurodegenerative disease, and finally, Renate Reinsve does well, being the main factor that unites these characters.

The film is also full of many symbolisms, the most important of which is the leak in Edward's apartment, which increased in volume as his non-conformity with his life grew, and just when it takes on a normal appearance, it is repaired to exemplify his renewed self-esteem. As the film progresses, the leak reappears, because he lost the leading role in the play of his own life to someone who suffers from the same disease, and instead of seeing himself as a victim, he knew how to accept his reality and be a happy person, to the point that the leak breaks the roof of his apartment.

The production is also something to highlight, photography and scenery are good, and with the handling of light, conveys very well what the director wants to tell, but in my opinion, the makeup and the creation of Edward's face, was the highlight of this section. Joining the previous point with this one, the mask of Edwards' disfigured face, besides evidencing the good props of the film, works as a good symbolism of the protagonist's frustration for representing something he is not.

In conclusion, I found the film very interesting, with a development that becomes increasingly bizarre until the protagonist sinks into his own madness, but if we can see beyond the events, the teachings, symbolism and resources are really good, added to the outstanding performances of Sebastian Stan and Adam Pearson, who plays Oswald and in real life suffers from pathology, and true to his character, is a recognized actor and defender of human rights.

The main character in the film is Edward, an actor who suffers from a facial tumour and deformities that make his daily life a challenge, although he tries to cope as best he can .

The young man decides to undergo an experimental treatment to try to solve the problem and regain an appearance that will be easier to live with .

Using this very interesting starting point, director and screenwriter Aaron Shimberg has created a wonderful story that combines the genres of horror with elements of fantasy, drama and comedy, that will make you laugh and cry, as well as having the necessary twists and turns to keep the viewer 's attention without losing the authenticity of the plot.

This good script, awarded in Sitges, should be in the list of the best scripts of the year, as well as its main actor, Sebastian Stan,

The actor plays Edward brilliantly, in a performance that is anything but simple.

The cast is completed by Renata Reinsve, who plays Ingrid, the heroine' s new neighbour , and Adam Pearson as Oswald.

The beautiful Norwegian actress, who starred in the film ‘The Worst Man in the World’, played a supporting role in this film and competed in the official part of "Seminchi “ with ”Corrections ’, in which she is the main protagonist.

The British actor has had very few roles in terms of screen time, and in real life he suffers from neurofibromatosis, the same disease as his character in the film.

The film is quite good in almost all technical and artistic aspects, especially the soundtrack composed by Umberto Smerilli.
