  1. Film Review: A Star Is Born (1976)@drax205d

    (source:tmdb.org)

Among the many cinematic triumphs that have failed to withstand the test of time, the 1976 iteration of A Star Is Born stands as one of the more conspicuous casualties of shifting cultural tides. This second remake of William A. Wellman’s 1937 Hollywood melodrama was, by any commercial metric, a phenomenon: the year’s second highest-grossing film, a Golden Globe juggernaut, and the vehicle that secured Barbra Streisand two Grammy Awards, with its signature ballad Evergreen dominating charts worldwide. Yet today, it languishes in relative obscurity, rarely invoked as a touchstone of 1970s cinema, seldom referenced in contemporary pop culture discourse. Much of its diminished stature can be attributed to the inevitable, unforgiving comparisons with its predecessor and subsequent remakes – the Judy Garland-James Mason vehicle of 1954 and the Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga reinterpretation of 2018 – which collectively cast the 1976 version in an unflattering light. However, the film’s shortcomings extend beyond comparative disadvantage; fundamental flaws in conception, execution, and chemistry render it a profoundly disappointing experience, particularly for viewers anticipating greatness from its formidable talents.

The narrative unfolds with John Norman Howard (Kris Kristofferson), a rock demigod whose fame grants him licence to behave with reckless abandon, epitomised when he drunkenly forces thousands of devoted fans to endure a five-hour delay before a perfunctory concert appearance. Post-performance, he stumbles into a bar where his boorish conduct disrupts the set of Esther Hoffman (Streisand), an aspiring lounge singer. Their paths collide more dramatically when John brawls with an intrusive fan (an uncredited Robert Englund), necessitating Esther’s intervention to spirit him away through a rear exit. The following day, John arrives at Esther’s modest apartment to offer an apology, initiating a series of increasingly intimate encounters that culminate in their coupling at his opulent mansion. It is here that John, hearing Esther’s raw musical talent at the piano, recognises her potential and resolves to shepherd her career. His patronage propels her to stardom, and they marry, but their union is soon poisoned by diverging trajectories: Esther’s ascent coincides with John’s precipitous decline, accelerated by substance abuse and professional obsolescence. His self-destructive spiral reaches its nadir when he drunkenly crashes Esther’s triumphant Grammy acceptance, humiliating her on national television. Though Esther forgives his transgressions – even after discovering him in flagrante with a groupie-like journalist (Marta Heflin) – their attempt at reconciliation on a remote ranch ends abruptly in an alcohol-fuelled tragedy that claims John’s life.

Superficially, this iteration honours Wellman’s foundational premise: a Cinderella narrative wherein a woman’s professional ascendancy inversely mirrors her lover-mentor’s ruinous descent. Yet the 1976 version sought distinction by transplanting the action from Hollywood soundstages to the arena rock circuit, replacing the washed-up actor archetype with a dissolute rock star. This shift was ostensibly strategic – capitalising on rock music’s cultural dominance in the mid-1970s while exploiting the dissolution of the Hays Code to inject gritty authenticity with liberal doses of profanity, narcotics, and fleeting nudity. Conceptually, it promised a New Hollywood sensibility applied to a Classic Hollywood framework. Alas, this ambition was fatally compromised from inception when Streisand, already a colossus in music and film, transformed the project into a self-aggrandising showcase. Her artistic identity, rooted in Broadway theatricality and traditional pop sophistication, proved fundamentally incompatible with the raw, rebellious ethos of rock music. Kristofferson, though a country artist by origin, embodied the rock star persona with convincing authenticity, his lived-in ruggedness and gravelly vocal delivery lending credence to John’s self-destruction. Streisand, by contrast, exudes an unshakeable aura of calculated diva-dom; her meticulously crafted vocals, however technically impeccable, jar discordantly against Kristofferson’s earthy performances, never quite convincing as the product of a gritty bar-band upbringing.

Compounding this tonal dissonance is the utter absence of palpable chemistry between the leads. Their romance unfolds with mechanical predictability rather than organic passion, a failure exacerbated by a script – co-written by Frank Pierson, John Gregory Dunne, and Joan Didion – that neglects to cultivate believable emotional intimacy. Scenes intended to convey profound connection instead feel like perfunctory plot obligations, devoid of the messy, lived-in quality essential to selling such an operatic tragedy. One senses not two souls intertwined by fate and artistry, but two performers occupying parallel universes, their interactions stiffened by mutual artistic incompatibility and behind-the-scenes friction.

Further undermining the film’s emotional impact is its notoriously anti-climactic denouement. John’s demise, ambiguously framed as a drunk-driving accident rather than the explicit suicide mandated by the original script, robs the tragedy of its necessary catharsis. This narrative cowardice stemmed directly from producer Jon Peters’ interference, leveraging his position as Streisand’s romantic partner to override creative integrity during test screenings. Peters’ meddling extended far beyond the ending; his relentless micromanagement of every aspect – from musical selections to character motivations – transformed the production into a toxic battleground. Director Frank Pierson, an Oscar-winning screenwriter fresh from Dog Day Afternoon, found himself so emasculated by the triumvirate of Streisand, Peters, and a disengaged Kristofferson that he later chronicled the experience in a scathing magazine exposé. Though this account did little to dent the film’s immediate commercial success or Streisand’s standing, it cemented the 1976 A Star Is Born’s reputation as a vanity project – another example of ego triumphing over artistry.

In retrospect, the film’s failure to endure feels inevitable. Where the 1937 original captured Depression-era Hollywood with unflinching realism, and the 2018 remake dissected modern celebrity culture with surgical precision, the 1976 version exists in an uncomfortable limbo – too slick for gritty authenticity, too self-serious for camp appeal. Its musical numbers, once chart-topping phenomena, now sound dated and overproduced; its attempts at gritty realism feel contrived, its emotional beats unearned. Streisand’s undeniable vocal prowess cannot compensate for her fundamental miscasting, while Kristofferson’s authentic rock-star weariness is squandered on a script that denies him meaningful depth. The toxic production dynamics bled onto the screen, leaving behind a film that, despite its initial accolades, ultimately embodies the very themes it sought to explore: the corrosive nature of fame, the perils of artistic compromise, and the tragic spectacle of immense potential squandered.

Hello to all Hive friends. I hope you are doing well today... I am doing well, thank God, and this day I want to share with you all my opinions about a movie... I have to say that I personally felt that the movie “A Star is Born” is one of those movies that grabs you emotionally in a way that makes you question many things and leaves you thinking for a long time.... This movie starts with the character played by the talented actor Bradley Cooper, who is performing on stage.. and you can tell he is quite a star, but you can also get to notice that darkness that surrounds him, this artist is an alcoholic person and you can get to see how this affects him, even while giving an incredible show... Then into the equation comes the character of Ally, played by Lady Gaga, who is a waitress with a natural talent for acting and dreams that have been put aside for far too long.
Their paths end up crossing in a totally fortuitous way, as if by fate, and it is here where these actors show us an instant and spectacular chemistry, it feels like a mix of fantasy with reality, making you as a viewer really believe that love and passion can really change lives. I admit, I had my doubts before watching this movie, as I felt it was not my type and would end up boring me, but it was nothing like that.... This movie is the fourth version of this adapted story, which means it had a lot of shoes to fill... as soon as I saw this and said, oh, it's another remake, can it really bring an interesting story to something that has already been told three times? but to my surprise, the movie manages to stand out on its own in a way that I wasn't expecting at all.
It doesn't simply repeat the same story, instead, it gives it a whole new feel... the performances by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are incredible, they are moving and both have quite a bit of charisma... you really feel the weight of their struggles, I think they convey what addiction can be like in a real way.... Bradley doesn't play the typical cliché drunk, he presents you with a nuanced version of an artist who is dealing with his own demons, caught between his love for Ally and his inability to overcome his personal problems.

Talking more in depth about the character of Ally, Lady Gaga does a great job playing her... I have always seen her as a flamboyant pop singer, and although I am a fan of her, I never thought she could deliver a performance of this level.. But here, in this performance, she leaves all that flamboyance aside and completely becomes the character of Ally, which is a pretty normal woman who has been told many times that she's not enough... When this girl finally gets on stage to sing her first song with Jackson, I got goosebumps... you can feel all her nerves, her excitement, and that pure talent coming out, this is what makes her performance authentic... It doesn't feel like Gaga, it feels like we are really watching a new star being born right in front of us.
By the time they perform the song “Shallow” my favorite song in the whole movie, I was already completely hooked inside the story.... Another thing that I liked, and that obviously resonates quite a bit with the type of movie, is everything about the soundtrack... there are really amazing songs, but not only that, it's not just about the performances of these very talented actors, but even the calmer scenes, all the emotional sequences, are accompanied by unique music that conveys so many things to you and can touch your heart... the music, and the lead couple are the soul of the movie and are the main reason why this story becomes a powerful experience.
However, I must admit that in some moments I perceived pacing problems that I didn't end up loving... the first half is a carefully crafted work of art, you can perfectly see how the relationship between these two is blossoming, from playing together in small bars to performing for thousands of people... but when the second half comes, the movie seems to rush too much. One moment we can see how these characters are unknowns, and the next they are super, earning Grammy nominations and other recognition... I get that they want to show their rise incredibly fast, but it feels like there isn't enough time or space to let the story breathe and we can slowly see how they grow... it all happens in a way that loses the thread of the story... also for me, I feel like the fall that Jackson had feels a little abrupt.

Talking a little bit about the cinematography, the way this film manages to capture the concerts and the intimate moments, all these subtle glances between Jackson and Ally is just breathtaking. The camera doesn't just show you what's going on, it makes you feel like you're there with them... one of my favorite moments is when Ally sings to Jackson in a parking lot, shortly after they meet... it's such a simple, so normal, so random scenario, but it's filmed in a way that feels intensely personal, like you're peeking into something private and extremely beautiful...
Something that surprised me was how Bradley Cooper, being a first time director in this film, handled such dense themes...everything about the problems of fame, addiction and self-destruction, these are kind of tough subjects that just can easily fall into melodrama, but this director maintains a sense of subtlety...this film doesn't lecture you and it doesn't judge you either, it just shows you these characters trying to get by as best they can. Also worth noting is Sam Elliott as Jackson's brother, which for me added a very interesting layer of complicity to the story.. there is a certain scene where they are simply driving a van and without saying much, you can feel the weight of years passing, all the love, resentment, and words.... It's a testament to how good the supporting cast can be and how they bring out the story in a very good way.

In the end, the film leaves you with a bittersweet taste... it's a story of love, but it's also a story of ambition, sacrifice, and in many ways, failure. It's an interesting ending, and I personally quite liked it, it stays true to the story it wants to tell, even if that means breaking you in the process. I give this movie a rating of 8.7/10. I liked it a lot... all the pacing problems and some narrative highs don't detract from its title at all: must see movie. It's a real emotional whirlwind that I recommend without a doubt.. you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll probably come out humming some of its songs or, in my case, saving them in your personal playlist.
It's a movie that takes a familiar story and elevates it with exceptional performances, moving music, and a sense of realism that's hard to forget. If you are a fan of dramas, musicals, or just want to see Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper at their best and probably in one of their best performances of all time, this is a movie not to be missed.... I hope you liked this review. I'll leave you the trailer below to encourage you to watch it. And I'll see you in the next reviews. Take care of yourselves. Bye bye.

Bye bye.

  3. Film Review: A Star Is Born (1954)@drax815d

    (source: tmdb.org)

The Hollywood practice of remaking its classics is nothing new, and an example can be found in the 1937 drama A Star Is Born, which has been remade three times, resulting each time in a very different film. The 1954 version, directed by George Cukor, is often considered the most glamorous and spectacular telling of the story, with a strong following among fans of classic Hollywood musicals.

The plot begins in Hollywood during a spectacular gala benefit concert attended by Norman Maine (played by James Mason), a once-popular film star whose career has begun to fade. He often takes solace in drink and, while inebriated, he crashes the stage during a musical number. Esther Blodgett (played by Judy Garland), a singer and one of the performers, skilfully handles the situation and saves Maine from embarrassment by making it all look like part of the act.

When he sobers up, Maine decides to boost her career, partly out of gratitude and partly because he is genuinely impressed by her singing talent. He puts her in touch with his producer Oliver Niles (played by Charles Bickford), and Esther gets the break she needed, slowly building her stardom under the new name “Vicki Lester”.

The two soon fall in love and marry, but their careers take opposite directions – while Esther scores hit after hit, Norman’s films continue to flop, causing resentment and self-pity that lead to more drinking and embarrassing incidents, which ultimately present Esther with a difficult dilemma.

The film was produced by Sidney Luft, Judy Garland's husband, and envisioned as a comeback for her following a four-year hiatus caused by mental problems and substance abuse addiction. The script by Moss Hart generally follows the 1937 version, but with some notable changes. The character of Esther Blodgett/Vicki Lester is changed from an aspiring actress to a more experienced bar singer, a change made to showcase Garland's singing talent. The musical numbers, composed by Howard Arlen with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, are very likeable, including the ballad "The Man Who Got Away" and the "Born in the Trunk" segment, which functions like a film within a film.

However, there is a disconnect between the musical numbers, which belong to Hollywood’s escapist fantasy, and the actual plot, which paints Hollywood in a realistic and rather dark light. Sidney Luft aimed to make the 1954 film grander than the 1937 version, with a large budget at George Cukor's disposal, making it the most expensive film in Hollywood's history at that date. The use of the Cinemascope format, which looked as impressive to 1954 audiences as Technicolor had been in 1937, is still impressive today, but modern audiences are already accustomed to it, and the film may not seem as grand. The desire to make the film epic, along with the introduction of long musical numbers, resulted in a film that was over three hours long in its original version.

The 1954 film had a very good cast, with many members trying, and for the most part succeeding, in portraying their characters differently from those in the 1937 version. Judy Garland played a more insecure, weaker, and almost neurotic heroine, compared to the saintly character played by Janet Gaynor in the earlier film. James Mason, however, gave a truly memorable performance as Norman Maine, playing the character in a more realistic and convincing fashion than Fredric March did in the 1937 version.

Unfortunately, all these efforts were partially undermined by Warner Bros., whose executives, concerned over the box office, cut twenty minutes of running time, including some important scenes, after the premiere. In 1983, when a restoration was attempted, it turned out that some of the materials had been lost, and the original version was only partially reconstructed with the use of production stills. The result is a film that, despite the skill and talent involved, looks patchy and unfinished.

Despite being popular among audiences and cherished by Judy Garland fans to this day, A Star Is Born did not receive a single Oscar, despite several nominations. Most modern audiences would probably agree with this result, as the 1954 version, while showcasing Garland's talent, is not a grand film and could be best recommended only to fans of classic Hollywood musicals.

    RATING: 6/10 (++)

  4. Film Review: A Star Is Born (1937)@drax1061d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Hollywood is often described as a “dream factory” and, as such, the prime purpose of its films was to deliver an illusion to the audience. At times, however, some Hollywood filmmakers, either consciously or unconsciously, tried to deliver something more in line with real life on the screen and, on some occasions, that real life dealt with Hollywood itself. Some of these films were made even during the Classic Hollywood period, when the disconnect between the glitz and glamour of the American film industry and its more prosaic reality was even greater than in our, more cynical, times.

Probably the best known and the most influential of those films is A Star Is Born (1937), a romantic drama directed by William A. Wellman, known not only as one of the first Hollywood films to deal realistically with Hollywood itself, but also for serving as the basis for three major remakes.

The plot begins at a Midwestern farm where Esther Blodgett (played by Janet Gaynor) is a young woman obsessed with films and dreaming of becoming a Hollywood star. The rest of her family mocks her dreams, except her grandmother Lettie (played by May Robson), an old pioneer who encourages her to follow her ambitions even if the price might be a broken heart. After obtaining enough money for a train ticket, she arrives in Los Angeles, but it soon becomes clear that her path to stardom is all but impossible and that she has to compete with tens of thousands of other aspiring and chronically unemployed actresses. She, however, manages to befriend an unemployed assistant director, Danny McGuire (played by Andy Devine), who helps her find a job as a waitress at a Hollywood party. There she is noticed by the famous actor Norman Maine (played by Fredric March) who is smitten with her and persuades his powerful producer, Oliver Niles (played by Adolphe Menjou), to get her a screen test. It works splendidly, with Esther getting a role and a new name, “Vicki Lester”, and later marrying Norman.

The careers of both spouses, however, take very different trajectories. While Vicki Lester makes hit after hit and becomes a grand star, Norman makes flop after flop and becomes frustrated and angry, seeking solace at the bottom of a bottle, which ultimately ends in tragedy.

William A. Wellman was one of the most prolific and celebrated directors of Classic Hollywood, known for many of the most important films of the era. However, the real driving force behind this film was David O. Selznick, one of the producers of the Classic Hollywood era who could be described as “independent” in the modern sense of the word. Selznick “borrowed” much of the plot from What Price Hollywood?, an obscure and now mostly forgotten film made five years earlier, in which he served as one of the executive producers. Selznick, despite the general scepticism of Hollywood filmmakers towards films dealing with Hollywood, gathered a rather impressive collection of talent behind and in front of the camera. The script was, in one way or another, a collaboration of celebrated writers like Budd Schulberg, Ring Lardner Jr., Ben Hecht and, most notably, the American literary star Dorothy Parker. The two main roles were played by actors who had won some of the earliest Oscars – Fredric March (for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) and Janet Gaynor (for Sunrise, one of the last grand films of the silent era).

But the greatest asset of the film was the use of three-strip Technicolor, a technology that finally allowed audiences to enjoy images in bright colours instead of black-and-white. The process was expensive and clunky, and some of the earlier experiments resulted in audiences, unaccustomed to it, actually suffering headaches. Selznick, however, insisted that cinematographer W. Howard Greene use soft instead of bright colours, making the film more realistic and less demanding on the eyes. The general result of his efforts was not only a solid hit but a film that won over almost all critics and, more importantly, had its share of Oscars – for Best Director, Best Original Story and a special award for Greene’s colour cinematography.

The success of A Star Is Born led to three remakes (not counting an obscure 1951 television adaptation), all musicals – the 1954 version starring Judy Garland and James Mason; the 1976 version starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson; and the 2018 version starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Of all these versions, Wellman’s is the most authentic. Not only does it deal exclusively with Hollywood, unburdened by musical numbers, but its script and characters are closest to the source. The story of a young ingenue coming to pursue dreams and achieving them while experiencing heartbreak, as well as the story about the fleeting nature of fame and the ruthlessness of the American film industry, was something Selznick and the people around him were quite aware of.

The character of Norman Maine is a composite of a number of real-life personalities, mostly Hollywood superstars like John Barrymore, John Gilbert or John Bowers who, for one reason or another, failed to maintain their stardom, which led them to alcoholism and premature deaths. Even some of the cast members found inspiration for their roles in their own lives – Gaynor, during the scene showing the Academy Award ceremony, used her own golden statue as a prop, while the incident resembled an actual incident caused by Gaynor’s sister who got drunk and embarrassed herself during the 1927/28 Oscar ceremony. Even elderly May Robson played a character who, like the actress herself, had lived as a pioneer in the wilderness during her youth. Gaynor’s character in the film contemplates ending her career at the zenith of her popularity in order to take care of her family, and this is exactly what Janet Gaynor actually did following this film.

Even viewers who aren’t familiar with cinema history and its references would probably appreciate this film. In colour, A Star Is Born doesn’t look that different from modern films, and the story is simple and comprehensive. The script effortlessly bounces between pathos, drama and a little humour. Although constrained by the heavy censorship of the Hays Code, this film clearly shows the dark side of Hollywood, with the heroine at first forced to live in seedy hotels and do odd jobs. Although Adolphe Menjou’s character as a producer at times looks too nice compared to real Hollywood moguls of the time, scenes featuring him give some insight into typically Hollywood ruthlessness. Lionel Stander, one of the great character actors of the era, plays a very Hollywood character in Libby, the studio’s PR man dedicated to getting Norman out of alcohol-related troubles, who viciously turns against him when the actor’s fortunes make him insignificant. This performance is well-matched by Andy Devine as the heroine’s mentor and friend who also serves as something of a comic relief. Their efforts make A Star Is Born not only one of the more important but also one of the more enjoyable works of Classic Hollywood.

    RATING: 8/10 (+++)

    Plot / Trama

Jack Maine, a country rock music singer with alcohol and drug addiction problems, meets Ally as he hears her sing in a bar and, surprised by her voice, invites her to have a few drinks. The two begin to get to know each other and Ally tells him that she has wanted to launch herself as a singer but she has been rejected because of her image. Jack invites Ally to her next concert and also invites her on stage to improvise the song "Shallow" and a video of them goes viral so Jack decides to invite Ally to go on tour as well. Both begin a passionate relationship and in an opportunity in which Jack encourages Ally to sing a solo song, leaving the concert he meets a music producer who offers him a contract. Jack, although he gets quite jealous and upset, decides to support her.

Ally undergoes a makeover and also takes on a more pop musical approach. Jack doesn't attend his first performance because he passed out drunk on the street. Ally then arrives upset but Jack, willing to reconcile with her, proposes to her and they marry that same afternoon. After the wedding, Ally appears on Saturday Night Live and shortly after they tell her that she has been nominated for a Grammy but when she goes home to tell Jack she finds him drunk again so they argue again but days later they reconcile again. Ally manages to win a grammy but Jack shows up drunk interrupting Ally during her speech, for which he is later admitted to a rehabilitation center. Months later he meets again with Ally who sees him much improved. Ally tells Rez that she wants Jack to go with her to Europe but he refuses, and then goes and tells Jack that he is a hindrance to Ally's career and that in no time he will relapse into her addiction again. . These words deeply hurt Jack so he decides to commit suicide by hanging himself. Ally then sinks into a deep depression over what happened. The movie ends with an introduction of Ally singing "I'll Never Love Again".

    My Opinion / Mi Opinión

I decided to see this movie because I am a big fan of Lady Gaga and also because it is a remake of a movie of the same name which I had already seen before 1976, this time starring Barbra Streisand. I was surprised to learn that this 2019 adaptation is in fact the fourth. The story has sad parts but it is also very beautiful, it addresses issues such as alcohol and drug addiction, and how these can lead to perdition. I also liked that Jack pushed Ally to achieve her dream. The only thing I didn't like about the story is that Ally's producer was very hard on Jack so that he decided to commit suicide, since I think that people should have a little conscience when dealing with an addicted person in recovery since they are more sensitive, so there always has to be empathy. I really loved the chemistry between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the movie, and it's a shame that they weren't anything more than friends in real life, since in my opinion they would make a beautiful couple.

The photography is really very good, as well as the locations and recording set used for the film. I really liked the recreation of the Grammy Awards in which I could also see a singer that I really like Brandi Carlile, I also really liked the image they gave to the character of Ally, which was really well interpreted by Lady Gaga although I I like it better how it looks natural. In fact, I once heard on a news channel that Bradley Cooper always wanted to see Lady Gaga all natural on the set, which I thought was a very nice idea because although I'm not saying that Lady Gaga looks like a miss universe I think she looks pretty good without makeup. In my opinion, generally all the cast did a great job with the development of their characters and the result was very good.

I think the soundtrack is what I liked the most about the movie, since Lady Gaga is one of my favorite singers and this soundtrack contains many songs composed and recorded by her, my favorite songs are "Shallow" which I loved that won an Oscar for best song because Lady Gaga really deserved it, and "I'll Never Love Again" which makes me cry and when I heard it for the first time I felt identified with the lyrics because back then It made me think of someone else. I feel that the film did not receive the recognition that it deserves at least at the Oscars since in my opinion Lady Gaga should have won the award for best actress but at least I am satisfied that they recognized Shallow, whose presentation at the Oscars was phenomenal. I admit that this soundtrack is one of my favorites as well as the version with Barbra Streisand. As you said before, I was surprised to learn that there are 3 other versions of the film with the same name, and although I haven't had the opportunity to see the first two yet, I hope to see them soon.

Finally, in general terms, it seemed like a fairly well-made movie, the characters are excellent and I would have liked Jack not to commit suicide, but to show how he finally overcame his addiction with Ally's help, how they solved their problems and the entire marriage. both became much more solid with time and that they enjoyed going on tour together. It is an ending that I would have liked but I think that the ending that the film really had was necessary to raise awareness of the damage that alcohol and drugs do to people and that sometimes they can lead to death. It is a movie that is worth seeing so I would like to recommend it to everyone who has not had the opportunity to see it yet, I hope you can enjoy it as much as I do.

  6. Music Short Review : A Star Is Born@filoso1371d

QuoteThe film is finished because of the music, and the music is more beautiful because it is a film. A brilliant moment that announced the birth of a second career for musicians and filmmakers..

The weight of the album rests entirely on Lady Gaga, but Bradley Cooper, the film's director and lead actor, also boasts an unexpectedly experienced rock star image. the opening songs "Black Eyes" and "Alibi" aptly convey the image of a hot and sexy rock musician, while country ballads such as "Maybe It's Time" show the feelings of a man with deep wounds inside. ."Too Far Gone", which enters the second half of the film, expresses his disheveled character in the film in a calm and poignant manner, and his vocals, which appear briefly at the end of "I'll Never Love". .once again, "is a very clear but emotional technique. properly stimulating

Even the edited songs in the main story like

Quote“Is That Alright?” .or even short films like “Diggin' My Grave” and “I Don't Know What Love Is” show a quality that doesn't lag without a grainy feel.

The album's dense composition is evident. .but the recording of various interludes and dialogues doesn't stop there, considering that this is a musical film that tells the stories of musicians, this music is a step ahead of existing soundtrack albums, which only contain music in films. .you can feel that you are trying to be a role that allows you to contemplate with your ears. ..as a result, the film was also a hit, and the album alone sold an estimated 6 million copies, which is a win for Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, or Jackson Maine and Allie Maine..

  7. A Star is Born| Why haven't I seen this movie before?| Appreciation post [ESP/ING]@cami.rojas1821d

    ¡Hola, Comunidad de Hive!

    Hello, Hive Commnunity!

    Fuente

Well I plead guilty for not having seen this movie before, I listened to the songs because I like Lady Gaga's music, but I had not seen the movie, these days I finally had it in front of me and I started to watch it, and although it is an old movie it still inspired me a lot and here I am.

The beginning... I must say that the character of Ally, at the beginning I liked it a lot, and I think it could be appreciated with fear and much more complex, and the character of Jack seemed to me a clear representation of the artistic world and its vices, the traumas... The love between them, it was very fleeting, I mean from the first ten minutes of the movie there were already romantic airs, and that is something I don't love, but as they raised it in the movie it didn't bother me much, I have to give credit to the incredible chemistry of these two actors, I swear I felt every emotion they transmitted. For me the best moment of the movie was the concert singing Shallow, because the emotions of the concert, the moment of Jack with the guitar, it was too much, I can't explain how I felt that adrenaline transmission, great scene. I think a lot of things happened very fleetingly and that would have bothered me in any other movie but for some strange reason not in this one.

The Denouement... With Ally's entrance to the world of show business, Jack's addiction, I think I started to feel annoyed, why? I felt that everything became so superficial and that we came from a beginning full of emotions, but I understand that they wanted to transmit how people must transform themselves and especially women to stand out in the world of music, I would have liked a revelation from her, like more firmness or fidelity to her style, I was waiting for that the whole movie. The story of him and every time he talked about his dad, his life as a child explained to me more and more the reason to have a story to tell and taking into account the difficult world of the artist I can then think of his reason to immerse himself in a world of addictions. Rez's character annoyed me a lot, I also kept waiting for her to realize that he is really very bad intentioned.

The ending... How do I explain to you that I cry like a baby, first because I am too sentimental for my own good and secondly because he comes from rehab, with a second chance at life and then Rez tells him all those things that feed his fears and he just.... Stop fighting, just as many of us are consumed many times by the superficiality of the world, reminding us that it's hard to tell the world your story without the world screwing you (excuse the word) along the way... Despite my pain and tears, I do feel that his death was a very important part of the film, and her singing to close the movie left me with goosebumps.

This film is the third or fourth adaptation of a story told before in the world of cinema, although I have not seen the previous versions I must say that for me this film is very good, now I would have to compare it with the others to see if I still think it is as good. What is certain is that it is a film that teaches you that life can change in a minute, that the same person who opens another perspective of the world can be the same person who needs your light to not be consumed in darkness, that we are becoming a more superficial society, that art does not need to have stereotypes to transmit because we all have a story to tell, a voice to use to carry a message that should not be overshadowed by the superficial world.

This movie has something that made me connect with it, and maybe it's the music... I think it's the best I've heard from Lady Gaga, a woman with an impressive story of overcoming and life, with a great talent and who really feels authentic in the lyrics of these songs... There are many dialogues that I loved, but out of two hours of movie it was this one that stayed in my mind, and that I still think about a lot:

I hope I never lose my apartment, and that art, doing what I love, having the special people in my life and that my soul is always enough to never get lost on the way....

I don't know why I hadn't seen this movie before, and as I said I feel like the characters could give more in terms of story but still it's such a beautiful love story, a movie so full of emotions that it will easily become one of my favorites to be a weeping masochist. I really feel that the secret of this movie was to convey so much, to connect with everyone's feelings. It will stay in my heart forever.

To make this post and inform me of some more technical aspects of the film, I was watching one of my favorite channels on YouTube in terms of movies and art: Fuera de Foco, I will leave in hyperlink here, the video I was watching so that along with my appreciation as a viewer and this information bring you this post.

I hope you liked it. See you soon.

  8. A Star is Born: an unexpected succes with Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper@serialfiller2162d

    image.png

    Tunnel Wave.png

    image.png

2018/2019 was an atypical year for international cinema, especially for Hollywood in the strictest sense.

The distribution of the Academy Awards seemed like a demo of the Cencelli manual. No sensitivities were displeased and everyone at home was happy. Many awards for African-American actors, many awards for the Hollywood industry in the strict sense of the word, a few great emerging talents and awards for a man like Spike Lee who has always been mistreated by the Academy.

The most classic story of all, which had obtained 8 nominations, ended up winning only one statuette, the one for best song.

Let's talk about "A Star is Born", a film that saw Bradley Cooper as the male lead, director and screenwriter with a Lady Gaga at his side in his first great leading role.

Role sewn on for her in such a painstaking way that many viewers believe that story was nothing more than the true story of Lady Gaga's birth and growth as we know her.

The film is not a biography of the Italian-American singer but a remake of a film that has its roots in 1937 and lives its fourth life thanks to Bradley Cooper's transposition in Opera.

Bradley Cooper that one by chance ended up behind the camera of this film, being "A star is born" intended for the first time to the couple Clint Eastwood-Beyonce in the now distant 2011. The many postponements then led Eastwood to abandon the project 3 years ago.

Lady Gaga has been selected instead of Beyonce and once the vision is over it is difficult to think of a different protagonist.

The reference story is a very classic one, one that the public and the Academy like so much.

A story of talent and dream that meets a triumphant love story.

2 talented, 2 romantic people meet at the right time and the woman in trouble and looking for legitimacy will find in the successful and more experienced man the momentum to succeed and become a star.

This should have been the 2-line story of the film, or at least the one from which it draws inspiration.

Cooper's ability was to fade this story, make it more dramatic, more intimate and give it endless chiaroscuros.

A man is strong, experienced, talented, successful, the one embodied by Cooper himself but also damned, sensitive, complex and far from perfect.

And then Ally (Lady Gaga) will not only be the woman to be saved but will herself become the saviour, creating a perfect balance and alchemy between the 2 that has long been missing in films of this kind.

To embellish it all a series of duets and original songs sung by the duo allowing us to discover the singing talent of a wonderful Bradley Cooper in every scene and growing.

Discovering him as a director also adds value to an artist who is too often relegated to the role of handsome but who year after year is establishing himself as a true star in the Hollywood firmament. Star who also manages to eclipse often a perfect Lady Gaga, not surprisingly nominated for all the important awards of the past year.

A star is born is part of the sudden wave of movies and biopic songs that see in Cooper's film and Bohemian Rhapsody the first and most important genre film events in recent years.

The film is promoted with honors, with a very impressive and courageous ending and various choices never trivial in a story otherwise seen a thousand times.

    image.png

A star is born" destinato in prima battuta all'accoppiata Clint Eastwood-Beyonce nell'ormai lontano 2011.

  9. A Star Is Born: un grande classico nelle mani e nell voci giuste@serialfiller2666d

A star is born" destinato in prima battuta all'accoppiata Clint Eastwood-Beyonce nell'ormai lontano 2011.

    What price Hollywood? (1932)

    A star is born (1937)

    A star is born (1954)

    A star is born (1976)

    A star is born (2018)

"A star is born" y los Oscars

Acá no haré ninguna declaración absolutista.

  12. A Star Is Born (2018) - Movie Review@coldsteem2821d

Most people will associate the remake of A Star is Born with the 1976 film starring Kris Kristofferson and Barbara Streisand. But the film has much deeper roots in the infancy of Hollywood. The original film was produced in 1937 starring Janet Gaynor and Frederic March. The film was originally about Hollywood, although the plot was basically the same. An aging actor discovers a rising star, launching her career as his own becomes consumed by alcohol and tragedy. The film was first reincarnated in 1954 starring Judy Garland alongside James Mason. The lead characters, for the first two films, were Vicki Lester and Norman Maine. In 1976, the background moved from Hollywood to the music industry. The names of the lead actors changed as well. But the story was basically the same. The latest iteration is most closely tied to the 1976 version, although they did give a nod to the origins of this film by naming the male lead "Jackson Maine." The name was an obvious link to the origins of this story.

Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) is an aging rock star. His performances are fueled by drugs and alcohol. His world is tightly managed by his older brother, Bobby (Sam Elliott). Bobby helps Jack hold things together. Jack has a chance encounter with a cabaret singer in a drag bar following one of his concerts. Ally (Lady Gaga) has incredible talent, but little self-confidence. She has been told her nose is too big and that she doesn't have the "look" to make it in the music industry. Jack and Ally fall deeply in love as Jack helps propel Ally into the spotlight. She is an instant success. As her fame grows, Jack's diminishes. His substance abuse and tinnitus become more than he can manage. Ally's love is sincere. While she could easily leave Jack behind, her love and commitment are enduring. But tragedy is never far from this story of love, relationships and addiction.

A Star is Born is a film that has been nominated for Oscars every time it has been made. It has won some hardware every time it has been produced with two of three films garnering at least one Oscar. This film seems like it was made with the Oscars in mind. It is the same basic story. The Academy seems to be suckers for this sort of thing. It is likely to garner some awards and definitely an Oscar nomination or two. I am not sure if it will win. The movie was decent, although the pacing seemed off at times. The film ran a bit long at two hours, fifteen minutes, and it felt long at times. The narrative arc was there, along with flawed characters that we love to love. I don't like the ending. I think that is the point. But I did like the way the ending was constructed, so I felt a bit of resolution at the end. There was a scene in the film between Jack and his brother where Bobby says "you stole my voice." There is an element of a torch passing that seemed to be at the heart of this story. Even if that heart is a broken heart.

I think there will be mixed reviews on Lady Gaga's performance. I thought she was slightly off at times, but her chemistry with Bradley Cooper seemed intense at times. She will probably get some rave reviews, but I think there will be some that trash her, as well. I think her performance was aided greatly between the editing and close up shots. Her music speaks for itself. She was cast right in the sense that she is a talented musician that doesn't fit the typical mold of the record industry. Although she relied heavily on her own shtick to make it in real life. Cooper was phenomenal. Is there anything this guy can't do? First of all, his music was pretty dang good. Even when he was playing to a live audience. That is impressive enough. We know he is a talented actor, and he delivered on that note as well. The scenes where he is high or drunk rang true. He helped elevate Gaga. Sam Elliott and Andrew Dice Clay were also interesting choices who were well cast. Seeing Elliott and Cooper together on screen, I believed they were brothers. They have a similar quality that gave the casting credibility. Clay wasn't the abrasive comedian we all knew decades ago. His role as father to Gaga's character was interesting. Like a caring, single dad who wants to protect the center of his universe.

A Star is Born received an R rating from the MPAA. The film doesn't delve deep into substance abuse as much as having the subject as a driving force. There is plenty of pill popping (or snorting) as well as copious consumption of alcohol. It is an integral, contextual part of the story. There are adult themes, death, and sexuality. This includes nudity in several scenes. One very brief scene shows Lady Gaga with full frontal nudity in a bathroom. The subject matter of this film is deep. It is a tragedy like all the previous iterations of this story. The story was never designed for consumption by children. I would recommend mature teens or older for this film.

I am convinced Bradley Cooper conceived this film with the Oscars in mind. It will get nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Song, possibly winning the latter. It may get nominated for cinematography. In any event, it is a solid story that is enjoying an amazing 8.6 rating on IMDb right now. Gaga and Cooper both have a lot of fans. This bump will certainly not last. The other films are all pretty much in the 7's these days. High 7s. I am not sure where this film will be when the dust settles, but certainly not that high. The music was okay, but not spectacular. I really only enjoyed two songs. Far From the Shallows and I'll Never Love Again. I think the latter will get the Oscar, even though Shallows seemed to get more play during the movie as the song that launches Ally's career. The pacing issues and the issues I had with Gaga's timing did not dampen my enjoyment of this film. I would still recommend seeing it in the theaters. But I am going with a more reasonable rating of 8/10. The film will eventually settle into that range, I am certain.
