Considered one of the greatest classics that exist in the last century, this film was so successful that it has not only managed to build a huge franchise that has lasted until today, but it has also managed to inspire many other productions of the genre. It has also become a great reference both in the seventh art and in popular culture. Directed by the famous Ridley Scott (who is the same who directed several well-known hits in the genre such as Blade Runner and The Martian), the script of this film was an inspiration of popular works of the genre such as The Thing For Another World (1951), Forbidden Planet (1953) and Terrore nello spazio (1965).     Plot

    The film opens in vast outer space, where a huge commercial spaceship called the U.S.C.S.S.S. Nostromo travels on automatic while the computer "Mother" that has control of everything stops the hypersleep system where the crew members are. Thinking that they are close to reaching Earth with their cargo of several million tons of ore (you tell me what that is, because I don't know), they get up to go to their work stations. However, Captain Dallas checks the computer and discovers that they are actually still a far away from our solar system and that the system has detected a strange signal coming from a planet close to where they are. Not knowing who sent it or what the message says, the captain takes it upon himself to go investigate, although several members of the team disagree with this. Arriving on the planet, they go down and a three-member team explores the place where the message came from. There, they find a huge spaceship that they had never seen before and inside it the skeleton of what appeared to be a huge alien being carrying a strange cargo full of eggs not at all normal that contain something inside, something that is not at all harmful.

Sin saber quién la envió o qué es lo que dice el mensaje, el capitán asume la responsabilidad de ir a investigar, aunque varios miembros del equipo no están de acuerdo con esto. Al llegar al planeta, bajan y un equipo de tres miembros exploran el lugar de donde proviene el mensaje.     Before I start giving you my most sincere opinion of what -according to many people- is one of the best classics of the horror and science fiction genre, I want to confess something: this is the first time I have seen it. And yes, despite having said from the beginning that I would only talk about movies that marked my childhood and that I have seen more than once since then, the case of this movie is that, either I don't remember having seen it when I was a kid, or I simply haven't seen it in its entirety. But this does not mean that Alien was not one of those classics that I know very well since then and that inspired me a lot to learn more about this genre (also that I have seen other films in which the famous Xenomorph appears, such as the crossovers of Alien vs Predator or the masterpiece Prometheus). As well as many others, the influence of this movie came to me from an early age, knowing many works that were inspired by this one. Now that I have given it a chance to watch it in its entirety, I can finally affirm the reason for its success and why even now, almost 50 years after its worldwide release, it is still a great reference in the world of cinema and genre.

    Another detail that I would also like to mention, first of all, is the excellent work that Ridley Scott did in this film, managing to create a masterpiece of its time, a time when science fiction cinema was in an unprecedented boom (with other masterpieces like Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind or incomparable successes like George Lucas' first Star Wars installment). The use of practical effects combined with a small budget, which at the time was a big deal for a film that was supposed to be "low budget", was impressive. Not to mention the excellent work of the cast, especially actress Sigourney Weaver who played the iconic role of Ripley in this and later installments of the same franchise. But what impressed me the most, not only me obviously, is the wonderful work that the artist H. R. Giger did with the well-known monster we see in this film: the Xenomorph. Being a creature that would later become one of the most famous in the science fiction genre, the image that the director shows us in this film is much more creepy and imaginative than what we later get to see in its subsequent sequels.

    Antes de empezar a darles mi más sincera opinión de la que -según mucha gente afirma- es uno de los mejores clásicos del género del terror y la ciencia ficción, quiero confesarles algo: esta es la primera vez que la he visto. Y si, a pesar de haber dicho desde el principio que solo hablaría de películas que marcaron mi infancia y que he visto más de una vez desde entonces, el caso de esta película es que, o no recuerdo haberla visto cuando pequeño, o simplemente no la he visto completa. Pero esto no quita que Alien no fuese uno de esos clásicos que conozco muy bien desde entonces y que me inspiró muchísimo a conocer más este género (también que si he visto otras películas en las que el famoso Xenomorfo aparece, como son los crossovers de Alien vs Predator o la obra maestra de Prometheus). Así como a muchos otros, la influencia de esta película llegó a mí desde temprana edad, conociendo muchas obras que fueron inspiradas por esta misma. Ahora que le he dado una oportunidad de verla completa, al fin puedo afirmar la razón de su éxito y de por qué aún ahora, casi 50 años después de su estreno mundial, sigue siendo un gran referente del mundo del cine y del género.

    Otro detalle que me gustaría mencionar también, antes que nada, es el excelente trabajo que realizó Ridley Scott en esta cinta, consiguiendo crear una obra maestra de su época, una época en la que el cine de la ciencia ficción estaba en un auge sin precedentes (con otras obras maestras como Close Encounters of the Third Kind de Steven Spielberg o éxitos incomparables como la primera entrega de Star Wars de George Lucas). El uso de efectos prácticos aunados con un pequeño presupuesto que, en aquel entonces era algo grande para una película que suponía era de “bajo presupuesto”, fue impresionante. Eso sin contar el excelente trabajo que tuvo el elenco, en especial la actriz Sigourney Weaver que realizó el icónico papel de Ripley en esta y otras entregas posteriores de la misma franquicia. Pero lo que más me impresionó, no solo a mí obviamente, es el maravilloso trabajo que hizo el artista H. R. Giger con el conocido monstruo que vemos en esta cinta: el Xenomorfo. Siendo una criatura que posteriormente se convertiría en una de las más famosas del género de la ciencia ficción, la imagen que nos muestra el director en esta película es mucho más espeluznante e imaginativa de lo que posteriormente llegamos a ver en sus siguientes secuelas.

    But personally speaking, although at a visual, interpretative and creative level it gets an excellent grade -taking into account the era in which it was produced and released-, it must be said that today it is only a nostalgic memory very well maintained by time. Beyond that, the theme of being a special suspense-type horror film or story comes to impress only because of how unique and subsequently famous it became to this day. But, for a generation like today's, this film only generates a combination of disturbing moments with familiar scenarios and scripts with performances that to this day are remembered as references in today's popular culture. The terror it tries to generate in its many graphic scenes with moderately done performances and not at all modern visual effects is something that, instead of scaring or shocking, generates an impression by way of admiration and respect. Sure, if you're a fan of the franchise or the sci-fi genre and have been on top of it for several decades, you may like this movie a lot. But for me it can become a bit heavy and slow in many moments that it has in its almost 2 hours of duration.

    One thing I noticed that I personally didn't like very much is the fact that we never fully see the iconic space creature, the Xenomorph, in the entire movie. We only get to see one or another part peeking out or moving; like the tail, the hands or the head. But we never see the monster in full body. While this may have worked at the time when it was sold as a space horror film (something similar or close to cosmic horror), this is no longer the case if we take into account what the rest of the films in this franchise have shown since then until today. I don't deny that I was completely disappointed by this, coming from a time when visual effects were already at a point of no return to practicality. But, even despite all this, there are moments and details of this film that I really liked. And of course, the makeup and design work on this creature is little more than commendable. I must also admit that in terms of suspense, it also has its own thing, generating many times that tension with slow scenes in terms of movements and uncomfortable sensations that call for danger in a not so small space.

    Pero personalmente hablando, si bien a nivel visual, interpretativo y creativo se llevan una excelente calificación -teniendo en cuenta la época en la que fue producida y lanzada-, hay que afirmar que al día de hoy es solo un nostálgico recuerdo muy bien mantenido por el tiempo. Más allá de eso, el tema de ser una cinta o historia de terror tipo suspenso especial llega a impresionar únicamente por lo único y posteriormente famoso que llegó a convertirse hasta el día de hoy. Pero, para una generación como la actual, esta cinta solo genera una combinación de momentos inquietantes con escenarios conocidos y guiones con actuaciones que al día de hoy son recordados como referencias en la cultura popular actual. El terror que intenta generar en sus muchas escenas gráficas con actuaciones moderadamente hechas y efectos visuales para nada modernos es algo que, en vez de asustar o impactar, genera impresión a manera de admiración y respeto nomás. Claro, si eres fanático de la franquicia o del género de la ciencia ficción y llevas varias décadas en cima, puede gustarte mucho esta película. Pero para mí puede llegar a ser un tanto pesado y lento en muchos momentos que tiene en sus casi 2 horas de duración.

    Algo que he notado y que personalmente no me agradó mucho es el hecho de que nunca vemos por completo a la icónica criatura espacial, el Xenomorfo, en toda la película. Solo podemos ver una que otra parte asomarse o moverse; como la cola, las manos o la cabeza. Pero nunca vemos al monstruo en cuerpo completo. Si bien esto pudo que llegara a funcionar en su momento al venderse como una cinta de terror espacial (algo parecido o cercano al horror cósmico), esto deja de serlo si tenemos en cuenta lo que ha mostrado el resto de películas de esta franquicia ha sacado desde entonces hasta la fecha de hoy. No niego que esto me haya decepcionado por completo, ya que vengo de una época en la que los efectos visuales ya estaban en un punto sin retorno a lo práctico. Pero, aún a pesar de todo esto, hay momentos y detalles de esta cinta que me gustaron mucho. Y por supuesto, el trabajo de maquillaje y diseño de esta criatura es poco más que encomiable. También debo de admitir que en cuanto al tema de suspenso, también tiene lo suyo, generando muchas veces esa tensión con escenas lentas en cuanto a movimientos y sensaciones incómodas que llaman al peligro en un espacio no tan reducido.

    I admit that, in terms of setting of unknown scenarios where you find a terrifying and dangerous being that can take your life at any moment, this film perfectly fulfills the expectations. Of course, as a fan of graphic horror, I missed one or two gory and completely graphic moments like every other gore movie I've seen since I was a kid. But well, I imagine that due to budget and direction issues, this essential detail was not taken into account in this film. I understand that, I repeat, it is a horror movie more set to suspense and space horror than to how visually or graphically terrifying it can be. So at least in that way it can be said that it delivers a bit. Then there are the performances or interpretations, which I admit most of the small cast we see in this film do very well. Sure, I have my complaints with one or two characters that... I'll better not mention by name so as not to fall into misunderstandings, but if you've seen the movie you'll already know who they might be. But as a general rule, there is no other character that I detest as much as I detest Ash, who is played by Ian Holm. Ripley, on the other hand, is the complete opposite, proving to be the most level-headed and cautious of all the characters.

    There is also the theme of the story in general, which in order not to fall into spoilers for those who have not seen the movie, we are left with several clear messages or lessons. Among the most obvious, is to be cautious, especially when dealing with issues that we do not know or the desire or ambition to want to have control of something that can not be easily obtained. But, beyond a simple lesson forcibly extracted, it is evident the hidden message that the film has regarding the typical obsession that the human being has to know "perfection". Themes such as "the perfect organism" and what the company in charge of the crew has ordered to be done in secret from the others is a clear sample of how far the great or powerful can go to obtain more and more. This, taking into account that we are talking about an era in which the human being has been able to travel to space in search of extraterrestrial intelligence and things beyond their understanding is normal to happen. On this side, this work manages to leave us a very convenient message for the audience, something that always ends up in interpretation, but that has worked very well since then (until they exploited it by repeating over and over again the same thing until it became something absurd and common to this day).

    Admito que, en cuanto a ambientación de escenarios desconocidos donde se encuentra un ser aterrador y peligroso que te puede quitar la vida en cualquier momento, esta cinta cumple perfectamente con lo esperado. Claro, como fan del terror gráfico, extrañé un poco uno que otro descuartizamiento o momento sangriento y completamente gráfico como toda película gore que veía desde pequeño. Pero bueno, me imagino que por tema de presupuesto y dirección no se tomó mucho en cuenta este detalle esencial en esta película. Entiendo que, repito, sea una película de terror más ambientada al suspenso y el horror espacial que a lo visual o gráficamente terrorífico que puede llegar a ser. Así que al menos en ese modo se puede decir que cumple un poco con lo suyo. También están las actuaciones o interpretaciones, las cuales admito que la mayoría del pequeño elenco que vemos en esta película hacen muy bien. Claro, tengo mis quejas con uno que otro personaje que… mejor no mencionaré por nombre para no caer en malentendidos, pero que si han visto la película ya sabrán quiénes pueden ser. Pero en regla general, no hay ningún otro personaje que deteste tanto como detesto a Ash, quien es interpretado por Ian Holm. Por otro lado, Ripley es todo lo contrario, demostrando ser la más sensata y precavida de todos los personajes.

    También está el tema de la historia en general, la cual para no caer en spoilers para los que no han visto la película, nos dejan varios mensajes o lecciones claras. Entre las más evidentes, está la de ser precavidos, más que nada al tratarse de temas que no conocemos o del deseo o la ambición de querer tener el control de algo que no se puede obtener fácilmente. Pero, más allá de una simple lección forzosamente extraída, es evidente el mensaje oculto que tiene la película con respecto a la típica obsesión que tiene el ser humano de conocer “la perfección”. Temas como “el organismo perfecto” y lo que la compañía a cargo de la tripulación ha mandado a hacer a escondidas de los demás es una muestra clara de hasta dónde pueden llegar los grandes o poderosos para obtener más y más. Esto, teniendo en cuenta que estamos hablando de una época en la que el ser humano ha sido capaz de viajar al espacio en busca de inteligencia extraterrestre y cosas fuera de su comprensión es normal que ocurra. Por este lado, esta obra consigue dejarnos un mensaje muy conveniente para el público, algo que siempre termina en interpretación, pero que ha funcionado muy bien desde entonces (hasta que lo llegaron a explotar repitiendo una y otra vez lo mismo hasta volverse algo absurdo y común al día de hoy).

    Finally, let's talk about the technical side, mentioning the excellent work of practical and computer visual effects that the film has. Starting with the design of the ships, the creature or Xenomorph, the scenes of the eggs or the skeleton of the alien are some of the most remarkable and admirable things that can be extracted from this film. The same can be said of the style of photography that the film has, although sometimes the use of still or slow motion cameras sometimes ends up being a little boring. On the subject of the sound effects, it is another detail that, on the one hand calls my attention a bit for being similar to those used in the first Star Wars movies, but on the other hand ends up tasting me a bit by the fact of several sounds that are a bit annoying or stressful. The soundtrack, unlike the aforementioned, is what I like the most of the whole movie in general, with melodies or sounds that generate that level of tension or suspense in many good scenes that this movie has. Anyway, this is one of those movies that are perfect for lovers of the classics of the genre or cinema.

    Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the science fiction and horror genre is concerned.

    Por último, hablemos del lado técnico, mencionando el excelente trabajo de efectos visuales prácticos y hechos a computadora que tiene la película. Empezando por el diseño de las naves, la criatura o Xenomorfo, las escenas de los huevos o el esqueleto del extraterrestre son de lo más destacable y admirable que se puede extraer de esta cinta. También está el tema del maquillaje o la ambientación que son otros detalles que llaman mucho la atención. Lo mismo se puede decir del estilo de fotografía que tiene la película, aunque a veces el uso de cámaras fijas o en movimiento lento a veces termina siendo un poco aburrido. En cuanto al tema de los efectos de sonido, es otro detalle que, por una parte me llama un poco la atención por ser parecidos a los usados en las primeras películas de Star Wars, pero que por otra parte me termina degustando un poco por el hecho de varios sonidos que son un poco molestos o estresantes. La banda sonora, a diferencia de lo anteriormente dicho, es lo que más me gusta de toda la película en general, con melodías o sonidos que generan ese nivel de tensión o suspenso en muchas buenas escenas que tiene esta película. En fin, esta es de esas películas que son perfectas para los amantes de los clásicos del género o del cine.

    Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y el terror.

    Nos encontramos ante una historia de ciencia ficción con cierta mezcla de terror.     This is a science fiction story with a certain mixture of horror. The plot shows us a crew facing the unknown, while they see how they are running out of methods to eliminate the enemy. At the same time, there are certain secrets and unexpected events that will surprise the viewer.

    Lo que destaca a mi parecer, es tanto la fotografía como los escenarios y producción para recrear lo desconocido, desde una nave alienígena, hasta el buen manejo de luces y cámara en la nave, ya que generan una tensión al no saber donde se puede esconder el elusivo alien. El diseño del alien, a pesar de los años, ha quedado incluida en la cultura popular.

    What stands out in my opinion, is the cinematography as well as the scenery and production to recreate the unknown, from an alien ship, to the good handling of lights and camera on the ship, as they generate tension not knowing where the elusive alien may be hiding. The design of the alien, despite the years, has remained included in popular culture.

    Alien, the Eighth Passenger (Alien. 1979), broadcast on various television platforms, is a science fiction and horror classic whose aesthetic influence decisively created sequels, prequels, comic books, video games, a universe of toys, novels and movies.

    Other offerings related to the franchise do not seem to run out and remain in the memory of fans.

    "Alien" borrows ideas and situations, not only from cinema, but also from literature.

    It proposes a gripping experience in the tone of a horror story, set in the claustrophobic environment of a spaceship that seeks its resemblance to an old and gloomy gothic mansion.

    The visual creativity, the original sets and especially the monster imagery give the film an ever-increasing tension and an unsettling aesthetic quality.

    An excellent cast led by Sigourney Weaver and John Hurt is outstanding, while Jerry Goldsmith's haunting score is decisive.

    Ridley Scott is widely recognized as a great creator of atmospheres with an eclectic background (he studied art and painting, was a set designer for the BBC and is a frequent visitor to European comics).

    The filmmaker knows how to capture the best of it. Trained in film, he brings an unusual personality to the film.

    However, the packaging does not always match the content, so there are hits and misses in his filmography.Trained in television commercials, he has excellent communication skills and is credited with some memorable films, including Alien.

    With a script by Dan O'Bannon, modified by Walter Hill, R. Scott knew how to distinguish the multiple possibilities of the script and, based on a successful team of collaborators who designed the aliens and the sets, the filmmakers built a disturbing gothic horror film. film, a subgenre devoid of other films of similar interest.

    Thus, the interest of Alien lies in observing how a ship of ultramodern technology gradually turns into an intricate labyrinth of passages and dark corners as it is captured by a primitive creature, but one that has an excellent talent for survival in harsh conditions.

    In 1980 I was a regular at a large movie theater located in the Urbanizaction Altamira in the city of Caracas in Venezuela, this theater consisted of a patio and a balcony and had a large screen and an exceptional surround sound. The fact is that in that cinema they were showing a film whose advertising included the following slogan: "In space, no one can hear your screams". The name of the film was Alien.

    So far, nothing special, except for the fact that I was twelve years old at the time and the film was B censorship, suitable for people over 14 years old. They didn't ask me for my ID, maybe because both the ticket agent and the doorman knew me from the many times I went alone to that movie theater.

    I enter a room with few spectators in which you could hear laughter and the opening of candy, the film begins and there is a disturbing opening sequence, in which the camera swarms like a ghostly entity through the facilities of the industrial building Nostromo.

    In my mind there was a clear flashback to the opening scene of Star Wars: A New Hope, but this manages to be erased by the sense of suspense and dread conveyed by the images being viewed, and the silence in which almost the entirety of this scene is held.

    Gone are the laughter and the opening of candy.

    From there on, the combination of horror and Science Fiction is fascinating and the director takes us on a journey in which we are afraid: Of being eaten, of animals bigger than us and with sharper teeth, of rape, of danger approaching without us being able to see it, of parasites and disease, of loneliness, of betrayal, of burns, of darkness, of technology that fails us, of the relationship between humans and androids identical to us, of male unease in the face of pregnancy and childbirth, and of the disappearance of friends and companions.

    The crew members of the ship come out of their cryogenic sleep state as they receive a distress call and are taken to an inhospitable planet far away from the Solar System, after suffering some damage the ship lands on the planet and find an abandoned alien spacecraft and the fossilized remains, Petty Officer Ellen Ripley, who discovers that the message was a warning and not help, Meanwhile, Executive Officer Kane manages to find a huge cave full of numerous eggs, and from one of them an alien creature is released, which manages to attach itself to his helmet, melt his visor and leave him unconscious.

    Inside the Nostromo, Captain Dallas and Sub Officer Ash are unable to remove the strange creature from Kane's face, and its blood is a corrosive acid. The creature drops dead from the face by itself and so, the crew resumes the trip to Earth, not knowing that they will travel with a terrifying alien that has the ability to be a parasite, change forms and in its adult stage in an intelligent being of more than two meters high that crazed selects the terrified crew members turning them into their victims.

    Two years before, I went with my mother to see a movie called Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a film in which pacific aliens that were barely distinguishable communicated with humanity through musical notes. I doubt after seeing Spielberg's work that my mom would have let me see this Alien movie alone.

    Among the images that I consider the most stark and uncompromising, and that were made with practical effects, is the moment when this alien, looking like a horrifying larva with a tail and terrifying teeth, emerges from a sea of blood and guts from the chest of Kane (John Hurt), one of the scientists on board the Nostromo ship.

    In addition to this alien, Ellen Ripley, becomes the heroine of the story, and one of the first female leaders of action cinema. In the end, the heroine survives with a cat named Jonesy.

    I left the theater very impressed and in love with Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), and more than a space movie I felt I had seen a very relentless monster.

    As the years have gone by and I have re-watched the film a few times I realize that the setting of the first film is a dark, industrial-looking space transport ship in which all the crew members are more interested in getting paid than in going where man has never gone before. The crew gave the impression of being that kind of characters who were fed up with the job they were doing.

    Alien, presented an alien monster that seemed organic, the advances made in the field of makeup and practical special effects made this being could express itself and come to life through terrifying attack mechanisms, such as the secondary jaws.

    Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver, the film kicks off one of the most culturally important sagas of recent decades. The conceptualization of the extraterrestrial monster was in charge of the artist H.R. Giger.

    I chose this film because I believe it is the first to efficiently mix horror and science fiction films, where the alien is the unknown mute killer who kills his victims one by one, and the female protagonist is the one who opposes the alien as she would do in a horror film. It also put Ridley Scott on the map of great film directors and as far as I know it is one of the films that laid the groundwork for action heroines.

    I prefer this kind of alien movies than the more sentimental E.T. type, I think that if we meet alien life it would be very dangerous and aggressive, if so I wouldn't want to meet any of them.

    Alien (1979) marked a milestone in science fiction with the horror genre as a driving element and a heroine as the protagonist (Ellen Ripley) in the story written by screenwriters and producers Ronald Shusett and Dan O'Bannon (Total Recall).

    The success of Star Wars (1977) prompted the same studio that produced George Lucas' film, 20th Century Fox, to begin production on Alien.

    It was directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator) while the design of the alien creature was the work of Swiss artist H. R. Giger, who won an Oscar for the film's visual effects. Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen) composed the soundtrack.

    Scott wanted to make a predominantly horror film and Goldsmith was up to the task with an atmospheric and claustrophobic score.

    The eerie, atonal tone of the music foretells that "something bad is going to happen" on the Nostromo ship.

    Goldsmith's score was a revolution in concept and experimentation in sonorities.

    Unfortunately the composer did not have a pleasant experience with Alien as his music was subject to changes perpetrated by Scott and editor Terry Rawlings in post-production being cut in length, eliminated in certain scenes and even replaced by another score composed by Goldsmith himself for a 1962 film called Freud.

    For example, the film's main theme at the opening, a trumpet solo over a string sustain emphasizing the loneliness of the astronauts in the vastness of space, was replaced by another more mournful and mysterious piece that Goldsmith had to write again at the director's request once the recording with the National Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Lionel Newman was finished.

    The final theme, a variation of the main theme with a slower tempo, was directly replaced by Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2, a piece that has nothing to do with the context of the film.

    These and other changes imposed by Scott ended up blurring the musical thematic unity that Goldsmith had originally composed for Alien. Ridley Scott and Jerry Goldsmith worked together again in Legend (1985) whose soundtrack was directly removed from American distribution.

  8. How Alien connects to Blade Runner, and Philip K Dick's drug fueled paranoia@alexbeyman2877d

    Ever since seeing the first Blade Runner film, I've been a fan of Blade Runner and more generally of Dick's oeuvre. But what makes his work so compelling? Why did it have such an impact on me?

    I assume most people these days know about his abuse of amphetamines. It makes perfect sense of the recurring theme of existential paranoia in all of his works. Even stuff that seems worlds apart from Blade Runner, like Man in the High Castle, is based around the same feeling.

    There's a novel within that novel, about what the world would be like if the Allies had won. The "meta" feeling of living in that reality, reading a novel where the axis wins, in which characters read a novel in which the allies won perfectly ecapsulates the feeling present in everything Dick wrote.

    The more you read about replicants and how lifelike they are, the more it gradually dawns on you that anybody could be a replicant and not realize it. This anxiety is intensified by the story taking place in a world where replicants are hunted down and killed, and told from the perspective of the guy whose job it is to hunt them. The possibility that he himself is a replicant is only the best known example of this feeling, the essence of Dick's work.

    A Scanner Darkly is basically just a reskin of Blade Runner in many ways. The main character is, himself, one of the people his organization is spying on and preparing to convict. That feeling of being simultaneously privileged and hidden but also in incredibly grave danger captures the mania of Dick's amphetamine binges, the god complex and persecution complex all in one.

    It's easy to see how he could become fixated on it. It's a terrifying idea that sucks everything else into it like a black hole until it's all you can think about. During the binge that inspired Blade Runner, Dick actually called the local police station to warn them he was a dangerous android who should be locked up. It was also the source of melancholy, resigning yourself to the conclusion that you're fake, your memories are fake, everything that ever mattered to you is a facade created to keep you fooled.

    Given that Blade Runner and the Alien films canonically take place in the same universe, I dearly wish for a film that explores this feeling in that setting. Tyrell Corporation and Weyland Yutani are confirmed to be competitors, with WY focusing on inorganic materials and technology in their androids while Tyrell instead goes the synthetic biology route. It's interesting to note here that the original R.U.R., aka Rossum's Universal Robots play which coined the term "robot" did not originally involve metal automatons.

    In the original short story and play, the "robots" were synthetic biology. A substance produced by sea slugs (which is where Bioshock took the idea from) is discovered to have remarkable biogenic properties, like stem cells on steroids. Any tissue it's exposed to, it can copy and produce more of. The "robots" in R.U.R. are assembled from individual body parts grown in this fashion, like assembly line frankensteins.

    R.U.R. can best be thought of as "what if the process Dr. Frankenstein used to create his monster was commercialized". There's wonderful imagery in one scene describing the factory where the robots are assembled. Looms of intestines weaving them into the body, great sheets of skin on rollers designed for fabric, with the robots moving step by step along the conveyor belt in various stages of completion.

    While Prometheus was a huge disappointment, I think the addition of the engineers was a constructive and important one. They are not some half baked idea, they go all the way back to Giger's artwork which served as the inspiration for the xenomorph. The consistent materials and aesthetic in all of his paintings imply that they all depict the same biomechanical world. Which begs the question, who built it? The engineers exist to answer that question.

    This ties neatly into Blade Runner, with the same questions raised by humans creating replicants extending upwards to the creation of humans by the engineers. Which means on some level, nobody was "real" from the beginning. We were all synthetic, from the dawn of time. The revelation that David is responsible for the creation of the classic xenomorph is also unfairly panned.

    It explores the fascinating question of what kind of synthetic life an artificial intelligence would choose to create. We created David the way he is because he's an expression of our ideals. But what lifeform would result from the creative expression of an AI's ideals?

    This makes sense of why, for example, the neomorphs are very biological looking and noticeably share DNA with the engineers but why the xenomorph at the end of the film looks much more mechanical. That's how David wanted it, moving away from pure biology and towards a more even mixture.

    This is arguably foreshadowed in the first Alien when Ash, the crew's only synthetic, is creepily praising the perfection of the facehugger while he dissects it. From the ruthless, unemotional perspective of an AI, the xenomorph does appear more perfect than humans. It exists for a singular purpose and everything about it is optimized towards that goal. They have no concept of fear or compassion which would hinder their relentless pursuit of survival.

    Anyway we got two shitty Aliens vs Predator films and a bunch of mostly ok games. It's time we got an Blade Runner/Aliens crossover. I want more of that world, and really we don't see enough of Earth in the alien films anyways. It could cover the infestation of Earth by xenomorphs we saw in the Earth War comic series, but with equal time given to a subplot about the Auton rebellion.

    If you recall, Annalee Call in Alien Resurrection was an Auton, the term used in the Alien universe for synthetics made to have complete emotions and no baked-in behavioral restraints. They're analogous to the experimental Nexus 7 line in Blade Runner.

    Anyway these are just some thoughts that have been percolating in my brain ever since watching Alien Covenant and the new Blade Runner film. Maybe others have had similar thoughts about how they connect? I'll be interested to hear about it in the comments, if so.

    If you're a complete movie buff like me and love to see modern remastering of older films that bring a completely new life to the movie, than this one is for you. Go check out the complete blu ray set of the first 4 alien movies. I scored this treasure for $20 at best buy on sale. The 3rd and 4th installment aren't really that much of an upgrade, but wow you'll be amazed at how the first two movies look. They honestly look like they were made yesterday.

    Here's a snapshot from my Iphone off of my 105" projector screen from an Epson 5040ub. Just incredible for 1979 and 1986 don't you think?
