    ALLmoney2.jpg IMG

  2. Review Film: All the Money in the World (2017)@film-trail3020d

    J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer) did not budge, firm in his decision to refuse to pay ransom for the kidnappers of his grandson, Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer), despite pressure from various parties including his son-in-law, Gail (Michelle Williams). Director Ridley Scott staunchly decided on a re-shot to kick Kevin Spacey out of the post-tampering film of a sexual assault case, despite having only nine days for many people a suicide mission. Both Getty and Scott are confident of their decision because it holds one important capital: experience, Scott's 40-year-old experience in the film industry, as well as the way he handles the behind-the-scenes problem, is also visible from the results on the screen. All the Money in the World, as the adaptation of Painfully Rich's book: The Outrageous Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Heirs of J. Paul Getty by John Pearson, packed with pacing precision and dynamics. Scott mastered the basics of telling stories. When the flow should be run, when to walk slowly, when to pause to give the audience the opportunity to digest the facts

All maturity matters, which Plummer owns, so that meet preparation does not stop him from giving a performance that for many actors may take a long time to explore the role. In the hands of Plummer, Getty is a powerful magnetic field that attracts attention when filling the screen. He was the successful oil tycoon and the richest man at the time (1973) who was willing to bargain for an hour to get a cheap statue and shake the hands of a son like a business partner after splitting for years rather than hugging warmly. Some of the spectators (including myself) may be fond of asking, "does Getty have a warehouse where she swims in a coin pool?".

When Paul was kidnapped, and the kidnappers asked for a ransom of $ 17 million, Getty just laughed in front of the media crew while declaring reluctant to pay. Then go Gail who tried to persuade her father-in-law to want to set aside greed for the sake of the grandchildren. When the effort was in vain, aided by Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg) as the adviser to Getty plus former CIA members and police, Gail tried to find her own way to save Paul. Gail refused to crumble. The freshness that actually provoked negative media opinion. According to one journalist, a mother ought to weep over the fate of the abducted son.

But Gail was reluctant to behave as expected. He resisted expectations and dared to act alone. Courage radiated from the stinging and sardonic stare of Williams. The actress's eyes talk so much. Similar to his never-explosive but binding film through investigation and character studies, Williams expressed a stack of flavours without great overflow. Gail's chat with Fletcher at the end of the movie implies a stack of interpretations. Did he let the man settle down? Is he secretly in love?, Beyond investigation, the intensity of All the Money in the World comes from an invitation to the audience to question the real intentions of Getty. Is it true that he is just a miser or is he running a veiled mind game? This is the real puzzle, which is present while enveloped in the majestic and mysterious music made by Daniel Pemberton. All the Money in the World is a packed dish with basic breakthrough style. And Scott is so master the basics, so the film is presented in such a solid. Not breaking the bounds, nor leaving a lot of defects.

  3. "All the Money in the World" by Ridley Scott - movie review@godflesh3057d

After watching a two-hour documentary about the Getty family, I no longer think of Ridley Scott's movie as good as I first decided. The story of the oil magnate Jean Paul Getty (named in 1966 as the richest man in the world), his five sons, his five marriages, his 14 grandchild, deserves to make a whole series centered on key themes of our modern society such as obsession, money, power. Instead of making a grim epic, which definitely has real life material, Ridley Scott decides to shoot a thriller for kidnapping. It's not a coincidence that many people can diagnose the movie as ordinary. And the movie is definitely not good enough, considering what it could be, but for what it is - and this is a story about a kidnapping - I think the movie is really good.

    all-the-money-in-the-world-plummer-poster.jpg

The movie focused on just one of the important moments in Getty's life - the kidnapping of his 17-year-old grandson Jean Paul Getty III in 1973 in Rome. The film begins with a gorgeous tracking of the blonde hippie Getty, who walks through the streets of Rome, in a scene that deliberately worships Fellini's "La Dolce Vita". Perhaps if it were a film shot by Paul Thomas Anderson (an inevitable analogy with "There will be blood"), he would start with lavish footage from the Getty mansion in Surrey, England, where he spent the last years of his life. Perhaps it would be a movie in which Getty is the main character, and as such, we would be provoked by each scene to ask ourselves the question: Why is this man so confused? In the real life, Getty inherited the oil business of his rich father, but he leaves hardly any of the 10 million money he has at his disposal. He is raised by a strict mother. Does the lack of parental love have anything to do with the raw, maniacally cunning man in which he turns? Or, on the contrary, is it just a coincidence of circumstances, not the main culprit for his character? Alas, Ridley Scott's film does not ask questions about the genesis of the Getty monster. He is asking all the time for another action-oriented question: "Will the boy get out of the way?" Considering that this is a movie about real events, this question should not be very exciting. (Down there are spoilers, but they are moderate). If anyone prefers to know, he will soon realize that yes, the young Getty survives, and the only thing he is physically losing (at that particular moment) is one ear. And although the questions that Ridley poses are not from the existential scale of the questions he meets with "There will be blood", he manages to make a really dynamic and interesting film in which, though not in focus, there is no psychological depth. On the contrary, whether because of the great role played by Christopher Plummer or because of the really good dialogues and script, the character of Getty is deep enough, comprehensible and interesting, although the film is not really for him. I find this to be worthy of respect.

    christopher-plummer-all-the-money-in-the-world.jpg

Speaking of movies about influential people with a lot of money whose family relationships are a failure, I can not help mentioning "Citizen Kane". Indeed, the real Kane, William Randolph Hurst, was also a collector of art and he and the Getty knew each other. Getty has visited him at least once in Castle Hurst, etc. The courage endeavors. Both were very much like each other: the only children inherited from their fathers family business and turned it into an empire. In the case of Hurst, these are the newspapers, Getty: Oil. Hearst also had 5 sons. Bearing in mind that "Citizen Kane" is one of the key American classics of the twentieth century (and Trump has declared his favorite film), it is not surprising that stories with similar charges are revived periodically. The plot of life of both men is dramatic and grandiose and has a parish character. Such stories are narrated both to entertain and admire (the achievement of the American dream) and to a warning, as is the case with another classic, the Great Gatsby.I like many things in "All the Money of the World". I like even the obvious dramatization around the character of Romain Durris, who is there to remind us that humanity occurs everywhere, even on the side of the kidnapper. Chungkuanta is a real person, although in reality he did not bring a doctor to cut Paul's ear. They were the guerrillas themselves, with some stupid metal, and they had watering them with brandy. By the way, I don't know if somebody has turned in on Christopher Plummer's praise, but Duryis does a very vital role. Every scene in which he is on the screen or negotiating with Gael Getty (Michelle Williams, again on the level) or communicating with Paul, his play is fascinatingly spirited. I like the tempo of the movie, I like the camera moving. All actors are in place. I love a lot of dialogues, I have a few favorite scenes, such as Jean Paul Getty's thoughts about money ("Every fool can get rich, but few are rich.") I like each character and nobody has been turned into a cliche. Even the work of Mark Wahlberg, the former CIA agent whose speech to Old Getty is a bit spontaneous, stands firmly on his feet and does not irritate with excessive fuss or sentimentality. Besides, I really like the scene of the prisoner's escape and the rapid fire in the field (also a fiction). John Pearson's biography for Paul Getty, on which the film is based, does not mention Paul being so close to his grandfather, as the movie produces. Jean Paul Getty has a genuine hatred of drugs, and Paul has been singled out in the Italian press as the "Golden Hippie." Little Paul has experimented with drugs, a defeat by his father, who was an opium addict, as well as featured in the film. The reason the father did not take part at the time of the kidnapping was that at that time his second wife, Talita, with whom they had struggled together in Morocco, died of a heroin overdose. Jean Paul Getty II is experiencing her death extremely severe, in absolute isolation. Interesting detail is that he, however, years later, manages to discard drugs and gives millions of his father's money to charity.

    20180106_BKP508.jpg

I will not list yet inconsistencies between the film and reality (though there are a lot) because it is not important. More interesting for me, why is Ridley Scott going to show this episode of the life of one of the most scandalous people in modern history, given that he could concentrate on other details. The funeral of Getty, for example, and the ensuing problems, have a serious dramatic burden and are worthy of filming. In reality, Getty wishes to be buried in the likeness of the Roman villa Getty House in Malibu, which fills with its collection statues and paintings. Because the museum is a museum, there are enormous problems for the body to be transported and buried there, and for months it is in oblivion, without a normal burial, under extremely bad conditions of high temperature and rapid decomposition. What irony! If it was a movie focused on the character of Getty, then we would probably see some of his love adventures (except for five wives). Jean Paul Getty has five sons, the last of whom, Timothy, dies at the frail age of a year and several months of a brain tumor. Getty did not take care of any of his children and communicated with them through short notes with which he only sent them money.

The reason why Ridley Scott does not include all of these details from Getty's extravagant life is that they don't care, and they don't help the story he wants to tell. He seems to be quite a pragmatic man and probably has subjugated the whole story of making a strained thriller. I think he has done quite well with this task, although it is definitely not the genre in which I would dramatize this story. If anyone accidentally wonders, Ridley's practicality extends to Kevin Spacey's quick acting decision to be replaced by Christopher Plummer. At the moment the Spacey scandals broke out, Ridley decided to film the movie despite the big losses he would suffer. "Otherwise, no one would watch this movie," he says, although he admits that Kevin Spacey has done a great role. At the beginning of the film, Paul Gety III voice behind the frame says, "I'm telling you all this in order to understand things, which you will see, and in the hope of forgiving us. We, the Getty family, are from another planet where gravity is so strong that it distorts the light. We look like you, but do not be confused: we are not like you. "And later Jean Paul Getty himself explained the meaning of this thought, saying that he was the reborn Emperor Adrian. "All the money in the world" is a story about a disproportionate, abnormal power, concentrated in the hands of a very frightened and confused person. As in his own eyes (or those of his family) he looks different, even alien, the truth is that a human emotion has been guided throughout his life, and has dictated his behavior leading to suffering for him and his loved ones : fear. Or, as Seneca says, whose immortal thoughts would be a worthy end to everything: "But life becomes infinite, indefinite - misery, if we always fear as much as we can."

  4. All the Money in the World--Movie Review--An Oscar worthy performance in nine days.@mctiller3098d

What happens when you have all the money in the world?

All the Money in the World is the latest movie from Ridley Scott, who also did this year’s Blade Runner 2049.

He’s 80.  He’s released Blade Runner and this movie in 2017.  Again, he's 80.   There, don’t you feel lazy.

The movie tells the story of the 1973 kidnapping of the grandson of J. Paul Getty the world’s richest man at the time.

Ridley Scott gets right to it.  Paul Getty, the grandson, is living a bohemian life in Italy, where he is kidnapped off the streets.  Then through flashback we are told about the early relationship between the family member and J. Paul Getty.

    And it ain't good.

If you're the grandson of the richest person in history.  Seriously, get some bodyguards.

But the tension of the movie, really isn’t in the kidnapping, it’s in J. Paul Getty’s response to the kidnapping.  He doesn’t want to pay the kidnappers.  Never mind he could pay the ransom.  It would be like loose change to mere mortals.  But from the senior Getty’s opinion, if he paid the ransom then he would have other grandchildren kidnapped.  The movie is somewhat the exploration of what money is to different people.  J. Paul Getty thinks he and his family is special.

The problem also is that Paul Getty’s parents have gone through a bitter divorce.  His mother has complete custody of the kids due to the father’s drug habits.  So the kidnappers are confused when the mother doesn’t have the 14 million dollars for the ransom.  So Mrs. Getty has to begin the embarrassing visits and negotiations with her former father-in-law for the money.

Michelle Williams plays Gail Harris, Paul Getty’s mom.  Mark Wahlberg plays Fletcher Chase a former CIA agent who now works for J. Paul Getty as head of his security.  And Christopher Plummer plays J. Paul Getty.  Plummer was famously inserted into the movie, as Kevin Spacey originally played the character, but when the sexual assaults came to light, the studio was about to shelve the movie.  So Ridley Scott reshot the scenes with Christopher Plummer over a span of nine days.  And his portrayal is outstanding.  How Ridley Scott pulled this off so quickly and seamlessly should be studied in film school for years.

The movie moves from one set-up to the next as they try to solve the kidnapping.  The tension moves between the relationship between Gail and J. Paul Getty, and Paul Getty and his kidnappers.

But really this is Christopher Plummer's movie.  He gives an extraordinary performance.  And you can feel the hatred toward him as a member of the 1% of the 1% and their attitudes toward everyone else.  His performance is Oscar worthy.

    Final thoughts

I would recommend the movie for fans of Ridley Scott’s work and for Christopher Plummer’s performance.  I would recommend catching this as Netflix rental when it hits, or maybe a matinee

  5. All the Money in the World - Movie Review@coldsteem3106d

    image.png

I have been seeing trailers for All the Money in the World for months now. It has been one of the most hyped films of the year. Surprisingly, less than two months ago, controversy broke around the film. One of the stars, Kevin Spacey (who plays J. Paul Getty), was alleged to have propositioned a teenage boy many years ago. Ridley Scott chose to re-shoot all of the J. Paul Getty scenes (which is not an insignificant amount of film) with Christopher Plummer as Getty. It was a gamble, but they managed to get the film out in time for Christmas.

    image.png

I was fairly young when Paul Getty (Charlie Plummer) was kidnapped in 1973. I barely recall the events, as they dominated the news at the time. And there wasn't much else on during the six o'clock time frame. News, news and news. Getty was the grandson and namesake of J. Paul Getty (Plummer) who was one of the richest men in the world. Getty made his fortune in the oil industry. He was also notoriously frugal with his money. When his grandson was kidnapped, he refused to pay the 17 million dollar ransom. His reasoning was that he did not want to create a dangerous precedent for his other grandchildren. That was probably not flawed reasoning, in the greater scheme of things. But it was more probable that he didn't want to part with any of his massive fortune.

The film brought several elements of the real story to light. I wanted to fact check the film because I was curious about several of the characters. There was a sympathetic kidnapper who appeared to run static between the sixteen-year-old hostage, the other kidnappers and the Getty's It appears that Cinquanto (Romain Duris) is based on a real person. Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg) was also based on a real character, although the film version was far more competent than the real CIA-agent turned hostage negotiator. In real life, the CIA agent nearly cost the young Getty his life. The hero of the film, Gail Getty (Michelle Williams) likewise was much of a bystander in the negotiation process. The film captured many details in a way that kept the film moving without bogging down in details. Knowing that much of the film was rooted in reality improved my impression of the film.

    image.png

All the Money in the World is an interesting biopic. There were some liberties taken, like the death of J Paul Getty coinciding with the recovery of his grandson. The elder Getty died three years later, believing the entire time that the kidnapping had been staged. The story had decent pacing, but was a bit choppy at times. I wonder if that choppiness might have been a product of the reshoot, or possibly from rushing to cut the film together after the delays caused by the reshoot. Either way, the subject was moderately interesting, but not necessarily engaging. The choppiness of the film also bothered me. But all in all, it wasn't a bad film. But it could have been better.

    image.png

At two hours and twelve minutes, All the Money in the World was a tad bit long. It felt it. The ending took a while to wrap up, causing it to be a bit anti-climactic. I would have preferred a shorter, tighter cut. The film was rated R by the MPAA. There is a graphic scene where the young Getty's ear is removed by his captors. It is a bit disturbing. There was a very brief nude scene, some language elements and violence that contributed to the rating. This film is better suited to teenage audiences or older.

    image.png

All the Money in the World was a decent movie. It was a bit choppy and the ending a bit drawn out. I think the replacement of Spacey with Plummer may have had an effect on the end product. The film works fine with Plummer as Getty. But the choppiness felt sloppy at times. The story is moderately interesting, but not a story I would have sought out to make a film about. I enjoyed the movie, but could have waited to see it on video. 7/10.

    • the director of the movie is Ridley Scott who is a very good director, but let's not forget that it has many weaker movies too and I'm very curious to see how this movie will be

    • the cast is made up of names like Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer who took Kevin Spacey's place, Romain Duris a decent french actor and other actors like Stacy Martin, Timothy Hutton, Charlie Plummer, Charlie Shotwell which I saw playing in the movie Captain Fantastic (2016) where he played a very good role. It is very interesting how Ridley Scott decided to reshoot all Kevin Spacey's scenes as J Paul Getty just 6 weeks before the official release date and this I found on imdb.com, and also the trailer of the movie shows us that Kevin Spacey plays the role of J. Paul Getty. To see much better about what this movie is about I will add also the trailer which I hope will help you with something to offer the proper rating for 10 December.
