  1. Blurring the Line between LIfe and Mortality || Altered Carbon Film Review@olujay1084d

Death is inevitable. The acknowledgement and understanding of that fundamentally provide a perspective on life and a default approach to life. For many, there's the appreciation of life and the heightened consciousness of our wellbeing, existential contemplation, and a sense of urgency to achieve one's dreams. That, in general, makes our world run the way it does. If, however, death were still inevitable but not permanent, how differently would we perceive life, and how differently would the world be?

In the world of Altered Carbon, death isn't permanent, as consciousness is stored in high-tech storage devices called "cortical stacks" are plugged into bodies, blurring the line between life and mortality. Bodies are referred to as "sleeves," connoting the dispensability of the human body since consciousness can be stored and transferred between them. And with two seasons of cyberpunk drama and action and a total of 18 episodes, this is one enjoyable series I'll share about its good, bad, and things in-between.

    1000146333.jpg

For a long time, I had seen this series around. I didn't quite hear much about it that was enough to convince me to check it out, so I just ignored it. After checking out its trailer and then finding that it had an interesting story and concept that I had never seen before, I gave it a chance. Fast forward to two seasons consumed, and I'll say I've been missing something all along.

Futuristic concepts like this fascinate me, and so I automatically liked the approach to reincarnation with high-tech devices that are capable of storing human consciousness and loading it up into bodies, then referring to the bodies as "sleeves." Pretty neat. And from that concept, too, whole new worlds were birthed.

    1000146326.jpg

The film portrays the never-changing fact that human nature is naturally selfish and greedy, with the idea that people want to live forever by all means. Surely, affording sleeves doesn't come cheap; therefore, the divide between the haves and have-nots is further amplified, with some relegated to living multiple times in discarded sleeves while others bask in eternal youth and privilege.

MOVIES & TV SHOWS BY OLUJAY.gif

The first episode of this film had me hooked. The idea of a super soldier having foresight or anticipation and being able to predict certain actions by other individuals caught my attention and made me long for more of that in other use cases. And then, soon enough, there was the explanation of how "reincarnation" works that fascinated me. There are also exhibitions of interesting tech, such as advanced gadgets and weapons.

    1000146328.jpg

I found it interesting to see the same person in different bodies, interacting with people, and going about their lives or missions simply by having digital human minds sent here and there. At the same time, however, I had to keep track of many faces and personalities all through the show.

The film starts out like a sort of normal murder mystery and detective stuff, fused with a lot of action, but then delves deeper with its story. I liked that it wasn't all guns and fights alone, although I very much enjoyed a lot of them. Little by little, the story expands, introducing more characters and history, as well as some more drama along the way.

It's heavily worth noting that this film, especially the first season, has many sexually inclined elements. For the most part of the first season, I kept seeing naked people. In fact, I think I saw every single person go naked in the film at some point. Okay, that's hyperbole, but you get the idea. The story, however, wasn't driven around sexual drama; it just felt dented by the incessant use of it. On the bright side, the second season was way less of that.

Speaking of the second season, I didn't quite enjoy it as much as the first. The major reason why this is so is because of this "reincarnation" idea. Because people kept changing faces, which was a normal thing, there was a completely new set of faces in the second season, although only the main character and a very small number of others showed up in the second season. It felt as though I was watching a completely different film, as I didn't find characters I was already used to. Also, the second season seemed a little bland and overstretched, especially at the end. At some point, I began to feel like the show should end already so I could move on to another.

    1000146330.jpg

There were a lot of acronyms in this film, so much so that I finished the entire film without fully understanding some of them. They were too many to keep up with and used so frequently that they made me understand the story less in certain areas. They were usually vaguely explained. For example, I didn't know RD meant "real death" for about 4 episodes and that DHF literally meant Digital Human Freight throughout the film. I just managed to get through the film by following the context.

I mostly enjoyed the film, not just for the story alone but for the effort and time invested in the visual storytelling of the film. Cyberpunk films require quite a lot of work with graphics, camera applications, and motion-picture techniques. I found it appealing to see how brilliantly executed many of the scenes are.

There were many characters and even way more actors for each of them, but I'd like to commend them for staying true to their characters all through. Many of them were excellent, especially for season one, and I couldn't have enjoyed the show if they had been terrible, but they were great instead.

    image.png

Altered Carbon is quite an enjoyable show, especially with the fancy tech stuff and really cool action in most parts. It may have been flawed by the ambiguity of many terms and incessant sexual inclination, but it appeals to me in many ways. I'd sure mention that if I were recommending it to anyone.

It seemed to me like a third season was intended from the way it ended, but I'll be candid with myself and say that I doubt I'd be excited about it when it does come out. Nonetheless, it's a pretty cool show.

I will give it a rating of 7/10.

  2. Spoiler-free review of "Altered Carbon" / Bezspoilerowa recenzja@herosik1400d

    A C oku ENGGG.jpg

Quite often I say that Netflix prefers to make a few shitty or average series rather than one proper one. However, sometimes they spend a lot of money on a project with high expectations. First "House of Cards", then "Marco Polo" (in 2014 it was Netflix's most expensive series), which was supposed to be a response to "Game of Thrones", several movies like "The Irish" or "Altered Carbon". Unfortunately, the latter did not meet expectations (that is, it did not interest the audience) and Netflix had to cancel it. Ie. there was another season (and anime), but I heard from several sources that the budget has already been reduced to the necessary minimum + lost all elements intended for adult audiences, so the series lost its impressive visual setting and intriguing plot. And since this series needs them, the second season did not interest anyone and the brand died ... At least for now. Hopefully when Netflix's license runs out, some talented and visionary producer will take over, get the right people, and adapt all three books by Richard K. Morgan.

    ac1.jpg

Why does Altered Carbon need so much money? The action takes place in the distant future, people made discoveries that changed our lifestyle forever. We started to travel (and colonize them) to unknown worlds, we became basically immortal, and we gained a few other opportunities as well. Or otherwise, technically we can be killed if the special hoop placed in the spine breaks + we did not update our soul to the server. People have discovered a way to save our consciousness and memory in a digital form that can be easily transferred and stored for up to several hundred years. As you can guess, these changes drastically changed our lives, many times more than constant access to high-speed internet. Of course, as is always the case, we have had to pay the price for these facilities - not only by solving some problems while introducing new ones, but also by increasing the gap between the poor and the rich, which is felt more strongly than ever in Earth's history. For example - if we lose a child but have not paid for expensive insurance, it will come back to life, but not necessarily in a similar skin - it may get, for example, the body of a 90-year-old pensioner, thus losing its unique experience as a small child. Moreover, very rich people can create their clones without having to share cash with anyone, they can be life bosses who do not suffer from the typical symptoms of old age, and if someone kills them they have a few backups of their soul and plenty of security. To sum up, as in the past you could count on a thaw in power, or God's justice after death or other changes, in the reality of "Altered Carbon" it is impossible. I don't remember exactly how it was depicted on the show, but I read about 1/3 of the book and the author left us under no illusions, he was painfully precise in describing the changes that were brought about by these discoveries.

    ac2.jpg

Before I move on to the plot description, I will develop the last sentence from the paragraph above. The series has a lot of reflections of a philosophical nature, transhumanism, the human soul, the sense of the existence of religion, or the eternal desire to equal God, which we know from the times of Greek mythology. Additionally, Richard K. Morgan has a style that I love and I don't meet often (though that may be my fault for reading too few good books) - he's honest, direct and vulgar (sometimes in a direct way, sometimes in a subtle way). Thanks to this, I feel that this universe is not idealized in relation to our world. If you like this type of themes or reflections straight from "Blade Runner" or "Ghost in the Shell", this work has a lot more. And this on various levels. Apart from those that we know from previous works of this type, there are new ones (and even if they are not, and someone asked these questions before him, for the 1st time I encountered them in this form just during this series) - the reaction of the human body to too much frequent skin changes, previous person's muscle memory (which looks a bit like a reaction to a new organ after a transplant, but in a more complex way. they say they feel a little different than before the transplant), how to perceive human clones and their owners, whether humans should live as long, and how life expectancy affects our ego. As for the plot, the main character was chosen by Bancroft to find his murderer and solve the mystery. Why exactly him? Because Laurens is very rich and very influential, so it's hard not to know him, and he cares about an independent and reliable investigation, without any wrong leads. And since Takeshi has been locked up for many years, he knows nothing about his client and can only focus on this matter.

    ac3.jpg

    ac4.jpg

Heroes are another strong card in the Altered Carbon deck. I don't want to lie, but I don't think I've seen a Netflix series since "House of Cards" where the actors would play this well! Sure, there were some exceptions in "Orange is the New Black" or a few other shows, but in this case I'm talking about the whole thing. It may not be the first Hollywood league, as in the case of Kevin Spacey, but the series has no reason to be ashamed - just go to IMDB and check the portfolio of these people. My favorite is Joel Kinnaman, who is a perfect match for Takeshi Kovacs. I guess that's what I imagined him when I was reading the book (let me add that I didn't see any screenshot or movie from the show then) - his perpetually suspicious face, which is almost tattooed - "I'm a cheeky dick, if you have the problem i don't give a shit. We rarely see such a character on the screen ... Oh, come back - characters do happen, but usually they are far from being SO WELL played! Joel doesn't have to do much to sell us this series - just stand still, smile in a cheeky way and throw a dozen fucks or other profanity. I also liked the original version, Will Yun Lee was well suited for the role as well. Although he has a much nicer face, you can see that there is a nasty and skilled warrior underneath this cute coat, who should not be underestimated under any circumstances. You can see that he was raised by fucked up madmen, as Takeshi said in the book - I can't remember if he used the same words on the show.

    ac5.jpg

    ac6.jpg

My second favorite is Laurens Bancroft, played by James Purefoy. You can see he's an experienced actor - he had a great time playing the role of the filthy rich and bone-rotten bastard. Every time I saw him on the screen, I saw quotes from the book describing his character. I was captivated by his gestures, the use of the whole body, showing almost not human pride and arrogance. His wife also delighted me, albeit in only one aspect. Before I go to it, I will explain that you would not jump to conclusions - apart from the erotic scenes, she coped noticeably worse than Joel or James. Of course, it showed a solid, good level, but nothing that would allow me to rank it equally high. Except for adult scenes (and scenes in which she tempted other characters - not only in the sexual sphere), in which she simply captivated me. Not because she is a beautiful woman (of course I also took that into account when judging, but now I don't mean it), but mainly because she moves perfectly and emanates emotions. Her tempting smile, alluring body movements, great voice manipulation just hypnotized me. I would place Renée Elise Goldsberry in third place. This one did not have a large role, but it was the most important one. Besides, she used her time 100%. Every time she appeared in flashbacks, I focused all my attention on her person. I felt that she was a born leader who has bigger balls than many men, and she could share her charisma among 3 politicians - they would be very successful in their profession, and she would have enough left to effectively manage the male division. And watching her in combat is pure pleasure. The rest of the heroes, i.e. Ortega, Captain Tanaka etc. they fulfilled their task flawlessly, unfortunately I cannot say too much about them due to the length of the text.

    ac7.jpg

    ac8.jpg

As can be seen from the above paragraphs, such a series requires a lot of money and specialists to present this world in a satisfactory way. The budget of the series was $ 7 million per episode (compared to the 7th season of "Game of Thrones" costing from $ 6 to 10 million per episode). The effects may not be at the level of "The Mandalorian" or the best scenes from the HBO series, but AC has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. There aren't many really glamorous scenes in it, but if something comes out, it looks nice, even though it's been 4 years since its premiere. The vision of the future reminds me the most of the intersection of both films "Blade Runner" (panorama of the city and the city up close), "Ghost in the Shell" (city up close, implants) and "Cyberpunk 2077" (implants, police, corporations, some buildings, prostitutes, bars, braindance). A gray vision of a dirty future, full of neon advertisements, dominated by transhumanism and the common man is only a tool for powerful corporations. The style of the series should appeal to fans of the cyberpunk genre, as well as the games of the same name.

    ac10.jpg

    ac9.jpg

On the one hand, I am grateful to Netflix, because series are more popular than books and maybe in a few years someone will buy a license for this title (as long as its popularity provides them with profit), but on the other hand I am very angry with their publishing policy. They keep on shit and it's a waste of money for ambitious titles that can compete with Boardwalk Empire and other series at this level. And no sorry it's season two, only he neither looks nor has any adult element - he has been neutered, just like many small dogs or cats. Therefore, it is neither for adults, demanding viewers, nor for the younger ones, because the brand was not built for them, but adapted. In addition, in a bad style. Well, you can watch the excellent first season and then pick up the book.

    A C oku POLL.jpg

    ac3.jpg

Nim przejdę do opisu fabuły, to rozwinę ostatnie zdanie z powyższego akapitu. Czemu akurat on?

    ac4.jpg

Bohaterowie to kolejna mocna karta w talii "Altered Carbon". Oczywiście, były pojedyncze wyjątki w "Orange is the New Black" lub kilku innych serialach, ale w tym przypadku mówię o całokształcie.

No i oglądanie jej w walce to czysta przyjemność.

    ac8.jpg

    ac7.jpg

Jak wynika z powyższych akapitów, taki serial wymaga wielu pieniędzy i specjalistów, by w satysfakcjonujący sposób przedstawić ten świat. Wizja przyszłości najbardziej przypomina mi skrzyżowanie obu filmów "Blade Runnera" (panorama miasta oraz miasto z bliska), "Ghost in the Shell" (miasto z bliska, wszczepy) oraz "Cyberpunk 2077" (wszczepy, policja, korporacje, niektóre budynki, prostytuki, bary, braindance).

Hello, living beings! Today I'm going to talk to you about Altered Carbon, a series that I had avoided watching for a simple reason, but when I was told that in the first season I was going to be able to see Joel Kinnaman many times almost naked, I decided to start watching it, and with that very superficial reason, I ended up loving this completely amazing science fiction series.

In this universe of Altered Carbon we are going to meet Takeshi Kovacs, the last Envoy of ancient times, who had been submerged in ice for 250 years, and is brought back to life because a Mat, someone exaggeratedly rich, buys him to solve his own murder.

This series is a crazy thing and they will be explaining it to us in the first chapters, terms like Mat (Millionaires), Stack (Artifact that keeps people's minds and can be changed from sleeves), Sleeves (Bodies of people without batteries that are sold and/or artificially created for sale), and Real Death (It is when the Stack is damaged and it is impossible to recover the person's mind) are going to be overused, so we have to get an idea quickly to not be lost the whole series, and there are many other terms.

    image.png

¡Hola, seres vivos!

This series currently has two seasons, I don't know if there is a possibility of a third one, but please, don't let Anthony Mackie come back, I'll tell you why later, but I almost hated the second season because of him, instead, Joel Kinnaman plays an incredible role-playing Takeshi Kovacs, but Anthony has never convinced me as an actor.

The first season is an exquisite thing of confusion, lies, murder, blood, too much money, and the suffering of those who can barely afford to exist; in this first season the story feels real for real, it has everything you need to keep you entertained and intrigued long enough to finish the whole season and see how the fuck it's all going to end because sometimes the entanglements are so many that you don't know what's going on or who is acting, those entanglements and plot twists are so many at times that they overwhelm and make you want to stop watching the series.

One of the incredible things of the first season is the need that the actors will have to play more than one role because as I said, the Piles can change bodies, and here more than one will have to play several people during the course of the chapters and they will be so surprising that one does not really believe them, but it is so, we will see a murderer playing a tender grandmother, and the worst thing is that you believe it, it's too good to miss it.

    image.png

Now the second season... It was horrible! At least for me, and I'll give you my reasons; as I already mentioned, Anthony Mackie has never convinced me as an actor, I don't know if it's because he always plays action characters or the eternal bitter face and scowls they make him have, but he never convinces me, and he was a miserable Takeshi Kovacs compared to the one in the first season, and actually, the 10 minutes that Takeshi Kovacs was played by a woman in the first episode was more real than the rest of the series by Anthony.

The story was too forced, you can understand that it connected very well with the end of the first season, but fuck, everything felt forced, the performances, the plot twists, everything, few things were real and I'll tell you what my favorite thing about this whole series, the first and second season at the same time: Edgar Allan Poe.

Yes, there was something I didn't mention and that is that of course, there are Artificial Intelligence, and Takeshi Kovacs in the first season is going to stay in a hotel that is run by an AI that took the name of the father of horror and made it his own, fuck, Poe played by Chris Conner is my favorite thing of the whole series, really, in the first season he does an excellent job, but if it hadn't been for his participation in the second season I wouldn't have seen it, it's a masterful job he does and he became my favorite character of all.

    image.png

We are going to find good and bad characters, who act good and bad, and who end up becoming good and bad, my favorite is Poe, and the one I liked the least was Anthony Mackie's Takeshi Kovacs, although if you see it you might like it because with me he has no salvation in any of the movies or series where I have seen him.

The eternal life or at least the existence beyond what our bodies can provide us has always tempted me and the possibility that we are given here of being able to save our minds in devices that can be implanted in new bodies is incredible, but this is when questions arise that still have no answer.

Do our souls remain the same when our minds are transferred many times over the years, are our souls the same or are they linked to our minds? We do not know and perhaps we will never know, but in the meantime, we can only theorize and hope that some of them will become true with the passing of time.

    image.png

Here's the trailer! And I hope you enjoy it, that you get motivated to watch the series, and that you enjoy the second season more than I did because more than once I was about to stop watching it, but only because of Poe I kept watching it until the end, and although I didn't like it at all, I'm satisfied for having done it, the story is enough for a third season, but I hope they choose another actor, that's all I ask because I'll surely want to watch it.

  4. Altered Carbon a key reson why I hate T.V@melbourneswest1899d

    img_0.49186442549948833.jpg

    Images sourced from here

Altered Carbon, wow! What a series and how awesome was it a true Cyberpunk genre. To be honest Cyberpunk is something what the world will probably be like in the future and not really a utopian future where tech advances society to be free and clean. It will still be dirty, drug fueled pursuit of sex and violence.

The whole adage of haves and have nots will always continue, just a human nature issue. There will always be crime as long as there are people and depending on the laws of the era crime will be different to what it is today or was in the past.

But enough about Cyberpunk genre which is totally awesome and builds on Sci fi. I want to talk about Altered Carbon.

    img_0.8414651342654459.jpg

We meet the star of the show Takeshi Kovacs who we learn is a solider turned good guy who fights against the current new age war against the world power who is controlling everyone and everything.

In this world no one dies instead an alien technology allows people to transfer their consciousness to another body called a sleeve.

    img_0.5768750221829613.jpg

In my opinion it's the only show that has successfully been able to change lead actors and seamless include them in the story line as if nothing had occured.

    img_0.49714431595123426.jpg

In season one as the story begins to unfold Kovacs is booted up in a sleeve to undertake an investigation, after being sent to prison for what he thought would be eternity he is quickly on the hunt for someone inorder to regain his freedom.

The fight scenes and tech used are beautifully integrated and the budget has been estimated at $7Million per episode.

A factor in Netflix's decision to cancel the show, which is why I am so devastated. It feels like the world is inundated by crappy reality T.V shows like the Kardashians and shows like Tiger King amassed millions of viewers. Just utter garbage in my opinion.

Yet time and time again we are graced with great shows that go to the chopping board because they fail to attract viewers.

    img_0.5827466429056224.jpg

Season 2 got even better when we got to see Kovacs enter a super solider sleeve with added features and abilities. Again he was on the hunt to find an assassin or he ended up being blamed for it.

A great T.V show, one that I was in the hopes of watching more of this fantastic Cyberpunk world unravel with stories but I won't be able to anymore :( 😞

Netflix decision to cancel the show after 18 episodes made headlines as many took to Twitter and social media to air their frustrations and without a solid reason why it was cancelled but it is thought that the costs were a big reason behind the decision.

    img_0.3281550021599685.jpg

Did you get into Altered Carbon, was it a show you enjoyed? What are some of the shows highlights and what will you miss most from it?

Season 2 definitely picked up where we found the source of the alien tech and I was really hoping for the show to peak more. But another one bites the dust and we are left without an adequate ending.

  5. Altered Carbon: second season - pilot (ENG - ITA)@serialfiller2276d

    Tunnel Wave.png

Altered Carbon is one of those TV series that in the era of peak TV struggles to emerge despite an indisputable quality. Netflix's sci-fi series comes back with a second season and a recasting that makes it look a lot like a reboot. Judging from the first episode it seems that the authors have learned from their mistakes, immediately creating a much more linear and understandable story and spreading it on only 8 episodes. This choice is important because it will allow you to better follow the TV series from the beginning to the end, without getting lost in the many complex mechanisms that governed the past season. Anthony Mackye is Takeshi Kovacs and replaces Joel Kinnaman as the protagonist. A choice that will have to impose itself gradually in the story and that only one episode is not enough to understand and judge it. The production effort is remarkable and the visual effects, which were excellent even in the first season, were very good. The first impression is excellent but, as I said at the beginning, the idea remains that there is no more time and space for excellent but not excellent series, not emotionally devastating, not surprising in this era of television where we find excellent products month after month.

  6. 'Altered Carbon' Season 1 Review: A cyberpunk show that uses creativity to amplify its creative concepts@namiks2283d

    altered carbon.jpg

There's a particular sentiment among the Internet these days that neon lights -- typically pink, purple, and blue -- above any city street is what the cyberpunk genre is. With many pop-culture hits using such colour themes in vaguely science-fiction settings, true cyberpunk has somewhat lost its meaning. And don't worry, this will be spoiler free!

Way back when Netflix released Altered Carbon, I attempted to give it a try, but I had this feeling that it was just that. I was judging it before really giving it a chance, it's true. But it did start off relatively weak, it failed to pull me in. Fortunately, with all of this free time and an inability to sleep at a regular time like most, I decided to pick it up again. I can safely say that I was quite wrong about the show.

Altered Carbon opens itself to you in a manner that feels rather generic: big, futuristic metropolis, a couple in a dark apartment seemingly being hunted by a group in all black and glowing red visor eyes. Some fairly frequent tropes found within the science-fiction genre. For story purposes, this event needs to happen for it to establish its setting and main foundation to the narrative itself: the Sleeve concept.

Sleeves are the show's main concept, and its narrative built around it: a Sleeve is just any body. A person's 'soul' or 'consciousness' is backed up in a small chip that is placed in the back of the neck. If destroyed, a person dies for good. If their Sleeve is destroyed, it's an expendable piece of flesh that can be replaced by another Sleeve at a cost. It's a nice addition that doesn't result in too many questions given we are told not how this technology came into existence, but more how it is used in a high-tech, low-life society. We witness ways in which Sleeves are given to those who are poorer, and how those with money are given high-end sleeves in terms of appearance and strength.

Using the Sleeve concept, we have a protagonist that is killed, kept dead and imprisoned, but then placed into a Sleeve, forced to return to life for the purpose of solving an egocentric living-in-the-clouds businessman's 'Sleeve death', a death in which just a person's Sleeve is murdered. Of course none of this is relatively simple, and the show unravels into a series of complex strings that come together to form a web that connects all.

The way in which the narrative plays out remains interesting and unique with its cyberpunk concepts, but it does feel a bit stale in areas. Particularly moments in which certain concepts may be deemed a bit too complex for some, and the show goes into a bit of unnecessary exposition that disconnects you from the immersion of the world it tries quite hard, and succeeds often, in building. These moments of exposition can pull you out of what seems important and throw you into flashbacks you don't really care for that seem a bit too long, or quite literal moments of a character describing a concept.

    The Concepts

Altered Carbon is at its greatest when exploring its world-building themes. It works excellently to combine editing and cinematography to amplify such themes: a virtual construct in which the lighting is rough, surroundings distorted and otherworldly from the use of wide angle lenses that bend the edges of the screen. These touches are excellent and produce a realistic nature in which the concepts thrive in. The transition from reality to virtual constructs is done in a manner that doesn't feel too science-fictionlike but instead hold some weight to them: laying down or leaning against the wall, placing some wires on your head with the construct then taking over, booting you into a completely different location. While virtual constructs are filled with all kinds of themes, as expected, the concept is conveyed without over-complicating things.

As the show progresses, we see more of the streets and the low-life elements of the world: a lack of care for nudity, showing a humanity that has been reduced to what some might perceive as degeneracy. There's a lack of care regarding the body, a Sleeve is just flesh to be used, not seen as the private, fragile thing it is today. This is a cyberpunk theme that is often met with controversy, which is in my opinion quite stupid, as the genre of cyberpunk is built on showing the ways in which humanity has changed from its core values and no longer cares for the things that connect us to nature the most. With the increase in technological advancements and consumer access, morals are replaced by convenience and dopamine rushes. The body is no longer a temple.

With this perception of the human body changing, Altered Carbon ensures that it displays the ways in which the rich will take full advantage of access to full-body modifications. They're glamorous, in perfect shape, with not a single flaw. Again, the lack of caring for the body itself is displayed in the ways that the rich flaunt this perfection through the use of nudity. The ego has taken over. As an expensive watch on the wrist displays wealth and power, a flawless body does the same in a futuristic world, for only those with money and power have access to the best Sleeves. This isn't conveyed through the use of exposition, fortunately, but instead is just evident based on body language and character appearance.

    The Conclusion

Altered Carbon, with its many weaknesses, manages to thrive on its world-building and sticking to the foundations of the cyberpunk genre, which unfortunately is something we don't see too often these days. It's best moments are when its explores such themes, but what certainly amplifies them is the show's incredibly beautiful production. The lighting is crafted to near perfection in many episodes, and the cinematography has been taken well into consideration, taking advantage of camera movements and styles alongside cyberpunk themes that certainly did benefit from such decisions. By using great editing, lighting, and camerawork, you hardly even notice the special effects, given there just are so few of them. Locations are authentic, with many little elements to improve the realism of them. It's a great direction for a Netflix show, given Netflix's often disappointing approach to taking very obvious and cheap actions that ultimately ruin a scene, and even entire show.

  7. Altered Carbon - First Impression@serialfiller2304d

This show Is definitely decent. We knocked it out pretty quickly. The acting is B+ and the plot is pretty interesting. If you have time in your routine for another show, this may be a good one to add if you're into some futuristic sci fi.
