   One of Edward Norton's most remembered roles Uno de los papeles más recordados de Edward Norton

   This was one of those movies that I had on my list for several years, but had never seen and last night, looking for options and checking synopsis on Filmaffinity, I found a list called Best 90s Movies whose ranking is based on the score that users have left for each film. Reading the titles I noticed that out of the top 10 on the list I had already seen 9 excellent movies and this Tony Kaye film was ranked 6th, so I said to myself "ok, this is my sign to watch it".

   Esta era una de esas películas que tenía en mi lista hacía varios años, pero nunca había visto y anoche, buscando opciones y consultando sinopsis en Filmaffinity, encontré una lista llamada Mejores películas de los años 90 cuyo ranking se basa en la puntuación que los usuarios le han dejado a cada film. Al leer los títulos noté que de los 10 primeros lugares en la lista ya había visto 9 excelentes películas y este film de Tony Kaye figuraba en el puesto 6, así que me dije "ok, esta es mi señal para verla".

   American History X is a cult film that tells the story of two brothers (although a bit of their family too) Derek (played by Edward Norton) and Danny (played by Edward Furlong, the John Connor from Terminator 2: Judgment Day). Derek is a young skinhead of neo-Nazi ideology who is sentenced to prison for murdering two African-Americans who tried to steal his truck. All this is seen in the opening sequence, quite violent scenes that plunge the viewer directly into the plot. From there, the story takes two time lines: the present filmed in color tells the events that happen after Derek's release from prison where he was imprisoned for three years; meanwhile, the scenes filmed in black and white are events that occurred before the truck incident. In both cases, the narrator is Danny, Derek's brother, who has to write a class paper and has been asked by the high school principal to do the paper on his brother. This assignment is part of an activity that the director calls American History X and that, in addition to giving the film its name, is a tool with which the director seeks to guide a teenager he sees leading the same path that led his brother - a bright boy - to jail.

   American History X es una película de culto que cuenta la historia de dos hermanos (aunque un poco también de su familia) Derek (interpretado por Edward Norton) y Danny (interpretado por Edward Furlong, el John Connor de Terminator 2: Judgment Day). Derek es un joven skinhead de ideología neonazi que es condenado a prisión por asesinar a dos afroamericanos que intentaron robarle su camioneta. Todo esto se ve en la secuencia inicial, escenas bastante violentas que sumergen al espectador directamente en la trama. A partir de allí la historia toma dos líneas temporales: la del presente filmada a color relata los hechos que suceden a partir de la salida de Derek de prisión en donde estuvo encarcelado por tres años; mientras tanto, las escenas filmadas en blanco y negro son hechos ocurridos antes del incidente de la camioneta. En ambos casos, el narrador es Danny, el hermano de Derek, quien debe redactar un trabajo para clases y el director de la secundaria le ha pedido que haga el trabajo sobre su hermano. Esta asignación es parte de una actividad que el director llama American History X y que además de dar nombre a la película es una herramienta con la que el director busca orientar a un adolescente que ve conducirse por el mismo camino que llevó a su hermano - un muchacho brillante - a la cárcel.

   Because Danny is following Derek's example - at least Derek's example before going to jail - and is part of a group of skinheads that has grown bigger and stronger waiting for Derek's return from prison. To them, the things Derek did in the past, when the movement was starting, is something of a legend and he is revered as a hero.

   The problem is that the experience in prison has changed Derek's mentality and he no longer believes in the same things as his former colleagues, what happened in prison? What led this spiteful and violent young man to become this calm and tolerant man who wants to get his family out of that neighborhood and especially his brother Danny from a life that just three years ago he believed was the best way to live? The black and white flashbacks answer this and other questions throughout the film. However, it will not be easy for him to break with his past, burn the bridges and pretend that the violence that he himself helped generate in the streets simply forget him just because he wants to move on; that causes several tense and dramatic situations that will lead to a classic final climax of the 90's movies. The cinematography by the same director, Tony Kaye, works well and David McKenna's script, although somewhat irregular (it's much better in the first part) also works, but in my opinion what has turned this film into a classic of The nineties is the good performance of Furlong and the strong and powerful performance of Edward Norton who immediately after American History X went to do Fight Club, another of his most remembered roles.

   El problema es que la experiencia en la cárcel ha cambiado la mentalidad de Derek y ya no cree en lo mismo que sus antiguos compañeros, ¿qué sucedió en la cárcel? ¿qué llevó a este rencoroso y violento joven a convertirse en este hombre calmado y tolerante que quiere sacar a su familia de ese barrio y en especial alejar a su hermano Danny de una vida que apenas hace tres años él creía que era la mejor forma de vivir? Los flashbacks en blanco y negro van respondiendo esta y otras preguntas a lo largo del film. Sin embargo, no va a ser fácil para él romper con su pasado, quemar los puentes y pretender que la violencia que él mismo ayudó a generar en las calles sencillamente lo olvide sólo porque él quiere seguir adelante; eso provoca varias situaciones tensas y dramáticas que desembocarán en un clímax final clásico de las películas de los años noventa. La fotografía realizada por el mismo director, Tony Kaye, funciona bien y el guión de David McKenna, aunque algo irregular (es mucho mejor en la primera parte) también funciona, pero en mi opinión lo que ha convertido a esta película en un clásico de los noventa es la buena actuación de Furlong y la fuerte y poderosa actuación de Edward Norton quien inmediatamente después de American History X fue a hacer Fight Club, otro de sus papeles más recordados.

   The film is a social and prison drama that also deals with the issue of Nazism, or more openly, racism. Although skinhead groups have existed since the 1960s, two things must be clarified: the first is that not all skinhead groups are neo-Nazis; and the second is that, contrary to what many would think, Nazi ideals did not disappear with the Second World War, but rather reached not only the 1990s, as the film reflects, but up to the present day. Just check the news to find neo-Nazi skinhead groups in Spain, Mexico and other countries. In times as highly sensitive as today, I don't know if American History X would have the same reception from the public and critics because although there is a story of redemption and a message against racism, some passages may be too similar to the ideals of some sectors of current American society (condemnation of immigration, supremacy of the white race) that can find validation in those opinions.    La película es un drama social y carcelario que además trata el tema del nazismo, o más abiertamente, el racismo. Si bien los grupos skinheads han existido desde los años sesenta hay que aclarar dos cosas: la primera es que no todos los grupos skinheads son neonazis; y la segunda es que, contrario a lo que muchos pensarían, los ideales nazis no desaparecieron con la segunda guerra mundial, sino que llegaron no sólo a los años noventa como refleja la cinta sino hasta la actualidad. Basta consultar las noticias para encontrar grupos skinheads neonazis en España, México y otros países. En tiempos tan altamente sensibles como los de hoy no sé si American History X tendría la misma recepción de parte del público y de la crítica porque si bien hay una historia de redención y un mensaje en contra del racismo, algunos pasajes pueden asemejarse demasiado a los ideales de algunos sectores de la actualidad norteamericana (condena de la inmigración, supremacía de la raza blanca) que pueden encontrar validación en esas opiniones. Es un tema delicado que - desafortunadamente - no hemos superado como humanidad, ¿alguo de ustedes ha visto esta película? ¿qué les pareció? Los leo en los comentarios.

   Cinema can offer us wonderful stories, for example, in today's cinema we can find romantic stories, science fiction, action or comedy, but we can also find movies or short films that convey ideas or feelings that in some way or another cause an impact on the viewer. For example, there is the Mexican film called ruido, which clearly illustrates the great epidemic of violence in Mexico, or we can talk about the film American History X, which clearly illustrates the enormous controversy and conflicts that currently exist in the United States due to racism and neo-Nazi ideas. But this movie, although it is not easy to digest because of the scenes of violence or the scenes where others are treated in a horrible way because of their skin color or ethnic group.

   The movie really leaves a wonderful teaching and most importantly even after 25 years after this movie came out it is still timely as even in our current time we still see cases of racism all over the world. But in order to put it in context, let's talk first about the plot and then about why Adolf Hitler's ideas continue to successfully influence people after so many years.

Por ejemplo, está la película mexicana llamada ruido donde se ilustra claramente la gran epidemia de violencia que se vive en México o podemos hablar de la película American History X donde se ilustra claramente la enorme polémica y conflictos que actualmente existen en Estados Unidos por culpa del racismo y las ideas neonazis. Pero esta película, aunque no es fácil de digerir por las escenas de violencia o las escenas donde se tratan a otros de manera horrible por su color de piel o su grupo étnico.

   La película realmente deja una enseñanza maravillosa y lo más importante aún luego de 25 años de haber salido esta película sigue siendo puntual ya que aún en nuestro tiempo actual se siguen viendo casos de racismo en todo el mundo. Pero para poder entrar un poco en contexto hablemos primeramente de la trama y luego de por qué las ideas de Adolf Hitler luego de tantos años siguen influenciando con éxito en las personas.

   American History X tells the story of a man named Derek, who is a convicted neo-Nazi returning home after serving a prison sentence. Through flashbacks and scenes from the present, the film explores how Derek came to be a neo-Nazi and how his time in prison changed him. But that, throughout the film, we witness how Derek suffers the consequences of his actions and how his younger brother, Danny, struggles to avoid falling into the same patterns.

   One of the most important messages the film conveys is that racism and intolerance only generate more violence and suffering. Through the actions of Derek and his group of neo-Nazis, we see how hatred can lead to destruction and death. The film shows us how racism affects not only those it targets, but also those who profess it. Derek is a prime example of this, as his beliefs led him to a dark and dangerous place where violence was the only answer.

   The film also shows us how racism can be perpetuated from generation to generation. Derek learned to be a neo-Nazi from his father, who instilled him with hatred for African-Americans.    But if we talk about the characters, well, this film has an exceptional cast that delivers powerful and emotional performances that impact the viewer. The characters in the film are complex and full of contradictions, which makes the performances all the more impressive.

   Edward Norton, who plays Derek, delivers a memorable and compelling performance. Derek's character is complicated and controversial, but Norton manages to give him depth and humanity. The viewer can feel the character's inner struggle, his regrets and his search for redemption. Norton makes Derek's character believable and real, which makes the film all the more impactful.

   Another notable character is Danny, played by Edward Furlong. Despite being a younger character, Furlong manages to convey the emotional complexity of the character. His performance is convincing and emotional, and the viewer is drawn into Danny's character and his struggle to escape the clutches of hatred and violence.

   But something I commented on at the beginning and I comment again is that honestly I have not an easy film to digest but it is necessary. for example, One of the most difficult aspects of the film is the violence. The film contains extremely violent scenes, including one scene in which a character is brutally beaten to death. These scenes are difficult to watch and may be disturbing to some viewers. However, it is important to remember that violence is a reality in the world and that the film is trying to show the consequences of intolerance and hatred.

   Another difficult aspect of the film is the mentality of the neo-Nazi characters. The characters in the film are racist, bigoted and full of hate. Their views are extreme and distasteful, and may be offensive to some viewers.    While this movie is far from perfect and the script has more than a few problems with it, the movie is salvaged by an absolutely wonderful performance by Edward Norton, who once again shows us that he deserves all the accolades that he receives for being one of the best actors of his generation.

   

   I chose to write about this film today because yesterday I wrote and article about how the media is portraying neo-Nazi movements as being widespread in the USA and I don't believe them - i don't think anyone really takes the media seriously anymore. I am not trying to follow up on that anymore but American History X wonderfully portrays how someone could end up in that sort of organization and a lot of it has to do with circumstances which are actually quite powerful such as the loss of a family member or the powerful bond that exists in an older-sibling type situation.

   Edward Norton plays Derek Vinyard, a former Neo-Nazi leader who had to serve some time in jail. While in jail there are some situations that arise that changes his mind about his hateful ways, but before entering he had very much succeeded in converting his younger brother Danny down the Nazi path as well. I don't want to spoil the film but this focuses greatly on the amount of admiration that Danny has for his older brother Derek and how he seeks to be exactly like him.

   

   Another powerful force at play in both of these guys lives is the lack of a father figure growing up lead them to fill that void with something else. That something else came in the form of the cameraderie and leadership that was provided by Cameron Alexander, a charismatic man who preys on boys without direction in life and recruits them into his "gang."

   The story is told in a non-linear fashion and many times the camera changes from color to black-and-white. This is a fun way of telling the story and I have always enjoyed this type of art direction in films. It keeps you guessing and you have to put the pieces together yourself as the movie carries on.

   Edward Norton was not the first choice for the film and the director was actually extremely opposed to his being cast in the film because he wasn't big enough. However, Norton was incredibly dedicated to the film and put on 20 lbs of lean muscle for the role and is an absolute beast in the movie.

   

   He was also nominated for an Academy Award for this role. Take that director!

   On to the problems that i have with the movie and to be honest I don't know how this could be improved.

   • towards the beginning of the film, Derek is interviewed by a reporter after his father was killed (this is in the first 2 minutes of the film and likely in the trailer - not a spoiler) and this segment was very poorly scripted. Even a legendary actor like Norton couldn't make it good.
   • Norton is portrayed as simply unstoppable and extremely admirable, including when he slam dunks in a basketball game. Norton is like 5 and half feet tall, he can't dunk
   • Danny is played by Edward Furlong - Furlong does ok in this film but he simply isn't a good enough actor for this role. I think his lack of acting ability is why we don't really hear much about him anymore. However, i honestly don't know who else they could have cast because it needed to be someone around high-school age. As silly as it sounds, i would have liked to have seen Macauley Culkin in this role.

   overall this movie was made what it is by Norton's outstanding performance in what I feel could have ended up being simply average in his absence.
