A few days ago I was looking for a film to watch to try to clear my mind and what better than a story based on real events, related to sport and a situation that is very delicate, such as xenophobia and racism. The story I want to share with you today is called American Wrestler: The Wizard, Fighting for a Dream, a 2016 film directed by Alex Ranarivelo and the script was written by Brian Rudnick, both doing a great job, but I will tell you more about this late

The plot of this film is about self-improvement, productions that I like to see, as this can motivate many people to keep going no matter what situation they are going through, we can always get out of bad times. When we think that everything is over, we can turn our lives around. But most of all, American Fighter shows us how cruel xenophobia and racism can be, which even in this day and age is still present and to be honest, I don't think it can be eradicated altogether. The important thing is to pursue our dreams. That is where young Ali comes in, who had to emigrate to the United States in the 1980s from Iran, when his country was in serious trouble with the West because of terrorism and the kidnapping of citizens in the Middle Eastern country. The boy arrives in California where he is received by his uncle and it is there that most of the main plot begins to unfold.

Ali started attending school, but as usual there was a lot of xenophobia and this affected him a lot, so he wanted to join some sporting activity to fit in with the community and to gradually win over the local people. It was not easy at all, but thanks to the good he was at Greco-Roman wrestling, he was able to achieve it little by little, even becoming the best in the sport. At the beginning he didn't want to be accepted, but finally, thanks to his tenacity, he made it. But the road was not easy, he went through many adversities, discrimination and loss of family members, but I don't want to give anything away, because the plot, surprising and very much, has some unexpected twists and turns.

Ali managed to become an outstanding fighter, all thanks to his uncle Hafez Tabad (Ali Afshar) who trained him at home and to his trainer Plyler (William Fichtne), who really gave him a chance when Ali (George Kosturos) was rejected by others, who didn't want to give him a chance in any sport. The plot is really good, it has a good development, but of course at times it was a bit slow at times, but you can understand why he wanted to go deeper into the decline of immigrants from the Middle East. I must say that even so this did not ruin my experience, because on the contrary this can help us to be sensitised to the subject. A success with the plot, the dialogues, one better than the others, it all depends on the moment.

Hace como días estuve buscando que película ver para tratar de despejar un poco la mente y que mejor de una historia basada en hechos reales, relacionada con el deporte y una situación que es muy delicada, como es la xenofobia y el racismo. La historia que les quiero compartir hoy se llama Luchador americano: El Mago, luchando por un sueño, filme de 2016 dirigida por Alex Ranarivelo y el guion estuvo a cargo de Brian Rudnick, haciendo ambos un gran trabajo, pero de esto les hablaré más adelante.
La trama de esta película trata sobre la superación personal, producciones que me gusta ver, ya que esto puede motivar a muchas personas a seguir adelante sin importar la situación que esté pasando, siempre podemos salir de los malos momentos. Cuando creemos que todo está acabado, le podemos dar un vuelco a nuestras vidas. Pero, principalmente, Luchador americano nos enseña lo cruel que puede ser la xenofobia y el racismo, que aun en estos tiempos está presente y para sincero, no creo que esto se pueda erradicar de un todo. Lo importante es perseguir nuestros sueños. Allí es donde entra el joven Ali, quien debió emigrar a los Estados Unidos en los años 1980 desde Irán, cuando su país estaba con serios problemas con el país occidental debido al terrorismo y el secuestro de ciudadanos en el país de medio oriente. El chico llegó a California donde es recibido por su tío y allí es donde se empieza a desarrollar la mayor parte de la trama principal.
Ali empezó a asistir a la escuela, pero como era habitual había mucha xenofobia y esto le afectaba mucho al chico, por lo que quiso integrarse alguna actividad deportiva para lograr encajar dentro de la comunidad y para poco a poco ir ganándose a las personas de la localidad. Para nada fue fácil, pero gracias a los buenos que era en la lucha grecorromana, lo fue logrando poco a poco, incluso convirtiéndose en el mejor de deporte. Al inicio no quería ser aceptado, pero finalmente y gracias a su tenacidad, lo terminó logrando. Pero el camino no fue fácil, pasó por muchas adversidades, discriminación y perdida de familiares, pero no les quiero adelantar nada, ya que la trama, sorprende y mucho, tiene algunos giros inesperados.
Ali logró ser un luchador sobresaliente, todo gracias a su tío Hafez Tabad (Ali Afshar) quien lo entrenó en el hogar y al entrenador Plyler (William Fichtne), ya que este fue quien realmente le dio la oportunidad cuando Ali (George Kosturos) era rechazado por los demás, no le querían dar la oportunidad en ningún deporte. La trama es realmente buena, tiene un buen desarrollo, pero claro que a veces por momentos se tornaba un poco lenta, pero se entiende por qué quería profundizar más en el ocaso que sufrían los inmigrantes de medio oriente. Debo decir que aun así esto no arruino mi experiencia, porque al contrario esto nos puede ayudar ser a sensibilizarnos con el tema. Un acierto con la trama, los diálogos, uno mejores que otros, todo depende del momento.

Another point in favour of the film apart from the story is the cast, I feel it was perfect and each one of the characters managed to transmit a lot, at least this was my feelings. The main character was played by George Kosturos and I think I played him quite well, but I must say that it is one of the first times that I connect more with other characters than with the main character. Such was the case of Ali Afsha who played the role of the uncle, he was a person who was quite frustrated by all the siege he was suffering in the country and for some reason he treated Ali badly, but it wasn't that he didn't love him, but on the contrary, he wanted him to be strong to withstand the cruelty that could live in the world. The latter was my favourite character of the whole film. On the other hand, we have Coach Plyler who was played by William Fichtner and was another of my favourite performances. Another one that could not be missing among the best is Jon Voight who played the school principal, a correct person and that at times you could think that he was the same as the others, but he was not, despite his participation he was a secondary character, but at the same time he gave him a greater transcendence in the story.

On the other hand, this film could not miss the romantic touch given by Lia Marie Johnson with her character Kristi, who was one of the most supportive people from the beginning to Ali and little by little they had a connection between these two. The cast was quite large and it was certainly a good job from everyone. This is where, apart from the cast, Alex Ranarivelo's direction and Brian Rudnick's script. The cinematography was pretty decent, the sets were great, in keeping with the era, where most of the scenes were gyms where the fights took place, the high school where Ali studied and his uncle's house. The soundtrack is not the best of the film, but at least it's pretty good.

Final opinion

American Wrestler: The Wizard is a very good movie, which has a great story that is worth watching. Yes, lately I've seen a lot of films with stories based on real events, of self-improvement. Ali was rejected from the moment he arrived, as were all the Middle Eastern migrants in the country, no matter what they had been through. That is where the great tenacity of our main character comes in, he did not let himself be defeated by anyone, he always followed his convictions and tried to fit in with the community, gradually winning over the people and not hating them as many would do. This film shows us that migrating is never easy, always the beginning is complicated and that is where we must build our new life in the best possible way. The story is great, the cast was well chosen, I think it couldn't have been better, so that's something in favour of the production.

The film got a good review, it's not one of the best films we've seen in the genre, but I do think the work was outstanding, compared to many of the current stories that happen, on the other hand. Such was the success of American Wrestler that within a year of its release a sequel was announced, starring the same actor as the original, but I really don't know if it was ever released. Anyway, if you like films about personal improvement based on real events, I think that Fighting for a dream is an ideal film for you and if it is not your favourite genre, I think that despite that it can also entertain you. So I recommend it 100%.

Otro punto a favor que le encuentro a película aparte de la historia es el cast, siento que fue perfecto y cada uno de los personajes lograron transmitir mucho, al menos esto fue mis sensaciones. El protagonista fue interpretado por George Kosturos y me parece que lo hice bastante bien, pero debo decir que es una de las primeras veces que conecto más con otros personajes, que con el prota. Tal fue el caso de Ali Afsha quien hizo el papel de tío, era una persona que estaba bastante frustrada por todo el asedio que sufría en el país y por alguna razón trataba mal a Ali, pero no era que no lo quería, sino que al contrario, quería que este fuese fuerte para soportar la crueldad que podía vivir en el mundo. Realmente este último fue el personaje favorito de toda la peli. Por otro lado, tenemos al entrenador Plyler quien fue interpretado por William Fichtner y fue otra de mis actuaciones favoritas. Otro que no podría faltar entre los mejores es Jon Voight quien hacía de director de la escuela, una persona correcta y que por momentos podrías pensar que era igual a los demás, pero no era así, que a pesar de su participación fue de un personaje secundario, pero a la vez le dio una mayor transcendencia en la historia.
Por otro lado, en esta cinta no podría faltar el toque romántico que le da Lia Marie Johnson con su personaje de Kristi, quien fue una de las personas que más apoyo le dio desde el principio a Ali y que poco a poco fueron teniendo una conexión entre estos dos. El cast fue bastante amplio y ciertamente fue un buen trabajo de parte de todos. Aquí es donde, aparte del reparto, también la dirección de Alex Ranarivelo y el guion de Brian Rudnick. La fotografía estuvo bastante decente, los escenarios fueron geniales, acorde a la época, donde la mayor parte de las escenas fueron gimnasios donde se daban las peleas, el instituto donde estudiaba Ali y la casa de su tío. La banda sonora no es de lo mejor de la película, pero al menos cumple, está bastante bien.

Luchador americano: El Mago es una película muy buena, que posee una gran historia que vale la pena ver. Si últimamente he visto muchas películas de historia basadas en hechos reales, de superación personal. Ali fue rechazado desde su llegada, al igual que todos los migrantes de medio oriente que estaban el país, sin importar por todo lo que estos hayan pasado. Allí es donde entra la gran tenacidad de nuestro personaje principal, no se dejó vencer por nadie, siempre siguió sus convicciones y trató de encajar dentro de la comunidad, ir ganándose poco a poco a la gente y no odiarlos como muchos lo podrían hacer. Esta película nos muestra que nunca migrar es fácil, siempre el principio es complicado y allí es donde debemos construir nuestra nueva vida de la mejor manera posible. La historia es genial, el cast fue bien elegido, creo que mejor no pudo ser, así que es algo a favor de la producción.
La película tuvo una buena crítica, no es de las mejores películas que hemos visto del género, pero sí pienso que el trabajo fue sobresaliente, en comparación a muchas de las historias actuales que pasan, por otro lado. Tal fue el éxito de American Wrestler que luego de un año de su estreno se anunció una secuela, protagonizada por el mismo actor de la original, pero realmente no sé si se llegó a sacar. En fin, se les gustan las películas de superación personal basada en hechos reales, pienso que Luchando por un sueño es un filme ideal para ti y si no es tu género favorito, creo que a pesar de ello también te puede llegar a entretener. ***Así que se las recomienzo al 100%.
