  1. Angel Heart is a psychological thriller@ismaca1013d
    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=656487)

It all begins in New York (1955), when an eccentric "Louis Cyphre" hires a private investigator to find a brain-damaged, World War II wounded singer (Johnny Favourite) who owes Cyphre an unforgivable debt.

The investigation takes Harry Angel (the hired investigator) to New Orleans, where he becomes embroiled in a world of voodoo and Satanism.

During the search he has an affair with Epiphany Proudfoot, daughter of a voodoo practitioner-priestess who loved Favourite.

The rest is to be seen, with an ending that is not only unexpected, but also sordid.

The film was written and directed by Alan Parker, who directed the acclaimed The Wall, Mississippi Burning and a not so well known but simply a gem The Commitments, among others.

The screenplay is based on William Hjortsberg's novel Falling Angel and the film is set in the 1950s and combines elements of the noir genre with supernatural and horror elements.

Mickey Rourke plays Harry Angel, Robert De Niro plays Louis Cyphre and Lisa Bonet plays Epiphany Proudfoot.

Hello to everyone in the Movies & TV Shows community! Today I bring you a new movie review. It is "Angel Heart" (also known as "Angel Heart") a psychological horror genre film, with a screenplay (based on the book by William Hjortsberg, "Falling Angel") and direction by Alan Parker. The film was released in 1987 and stars Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro, great actors of the time. A peculiar film, with an austere atmosphere, overwhelming music, great performances, an impeccable script and one of the best denouements in the history of cinema, makes it a cult gem. So join me.

The story is set in New York City in 1955, when Harry Angel (Rourke) a small-time lawyer is hired by an enigmatic man named Louis Cyphre (De Niro) who requires his services to find a particular person; Johnny Favourite. Little is known about the latter, only that he was a soldier who participated in World War II, who had a brain concussion that left him disabled and escaped after a while, but most importantly: Favourite has a great debt with Louis and it is an account that must be settled by any means necessary. A job that seems simple for Harry but as he advances in his investigation, things do not seem to be as clear as they were at the beginning.

The few clues Harry receives about this man push him to use all his means and skills to get information from some people who seem to be linked to Favourite. We also learn that Harry is not exactly a morally correct man, as he is a swindler who illegally performs several professions at will. This is how he gets valuable information when he learns that several people who knew and last saw Favourite are in New Orleans. This trip means a before and after for Harry as his life is in danger. Favourite's disappearance is linked to black magic; full of rites, curses, hens, death and sacrifices.

Harry is a crude, outspoken, unorthodox, obsessive and skeptical guy. So all that talk about black magic does not persuade him to give up on this research. On the contrary, it becomes a personal work for him, who is now very curious and tormented to know the whole truth about Favourite, who is he, where is he, why did he escape? It only seems to look disturbing when some deaths start happening around him (deaths of suspects he had interviewed himself) and when he starts having strange, bloody and violent visions. It seems that death is stalking him. Harry is deeply involved in the matter and there seems to be no way out.

The movie starts with a very simple plot and what we have seen in some other movies or series; a detective solving a disappearance case. But we have to applaud how they took advantage of that resource (problem/solution) to turn it into Harry's Odyssey. And even though several years have passed, the film still stands decently and proudly. The answer to the questions of where he is and who Johnny Favourite is may be presented to us several times in the film during some detail shots, reading between the lines or just connecting the dots, but boy, does it keep you hooked until the end. We too are like Harry; detectives piecing together here and there to learn the truth. So that effect is very well achieved in the film.

Finally my friends, "The Angel's Heart" is an incredible movie if you like to solve mysteries, psychological horror and suspense. Nowadays, there are movies that are based on this film, using similar references and twists that happen in the movie. The terror and fear of the unknown never loses its relevance. Definitely worth a look. Without further ado, thank you very much for stopping by and reading my post. I send you a big hug and see you next time.

  3. A review of "Angel Heart" (1987): A gut punch thriller that horrifies, disturbs and fascinates@aurzeq1273d

    Source

    Plot

Harry Angel, a private investigator, is hired by a peculiar and enigmatic client named Louis Cyphre to find Johnny Favorite, a war veteran and a previously successful singer who was fraudulently released from a mental hospital in 1943 and then vanished into thin air. Angel works hard and learns many fascinating things before getting sucked into a terrifying blood vortex. A doctor who was a slave to morphine approved the man's discharge from the clinic, where he was thought to be a patient, in exchange for $25,000.00.

    Why should you watch it?

Angel Heart is a cleverly blended thriller, detective story, and horror where the search for a person becomes an inner journey of the protagonist, in a perfect setting that moves from a more real New York to Louisiana with its ancient rituals and secrets. We are talking about a cult must-see, one of those you talk about to be cool because not everyone has seen it. I can't tell you more because I don't want to spoil it for you, but you will be pleasantly impressed by this breathtaking film.

This film is set in the deep south of the United States, where the melding of African cultures brought by black slaves who crossed the ocean and arrived in the new land with their shaman cults ignited by violent voodoo rituals has contaminated the souls of their children while preserving their spiritual strength.

The movie overflows with foggy atmospheres, and emits poisonous effluvia from the screen, giving off the impression that it was made in a darkroom full of dust and fumes. The settings are unsettling and decorated with ambiguous, magical things that take part in the story as real people, such as the cigarette packs and crushed cigarettes, the pale mirrors that are unreliable, and the old fan blades that spin with presence.

    Source

One of the main themes of the movie is the tale of the pact with the devil, which is undoubtedly cliché and timeless. An unknown musician named Mr. Favourite obtains fame and rose (up to myth status) in the USA. He had ascended from hell by using a technique he had discovered in old esoteric literature to conjure the evil one using black magic. After making several attempts to avoid his fate and after having forgotten some of his past, Johnny returns to examine himself. The policeman warns him, "You'll burn for this," hinting at the electric chair. "I know, in hell", blinks Johnny dejectedly. The atmosphere, the deep gulf concealed within individuals, and the dark river where the border is imperceptible, are what make Alan Parker's journey so amazing. "I recognize who I am. I recognize me!" The voice lingers, becoming increasingly doubtful. Uncertain. Then alert and angry. Resigned. Thunderous heartbeat. The trolley of the elevator moves evenly and gently in the direction of the chair room. Prior to hell.

One of the criticisms raised at the exit of the movie was directed at the acting, which was thought to be far too excessive yet really fit with the story's tendency toward hallucination.

    Source

But this has been (correctly in my opinion), reconsidered. All the main character's performances are exceptional and very suitable to the type of atmosphere and mood of the movie. While Lisa Bonet propagates an erotic charge throughout the second act that pierces the screen, Robert De Niro, who needs no introduction, plays a Mephistophelean figure who is impalpable and gloomy but never truncated for just under a quarter of an hour. The investigator played by Mickey Rourke, who is more ditzy and crafty than Humphrey Bogart, is very close to perfection.

    Source

    Conclusion

A disturbing, gloomy, macabre movie with rhythm and tension that builds gradually to a natural conclusion rather than a forced finale. A gut punch that horrifies (certain impact scenes are horrible), disturbs and fascinates. Alan Parker has done it again. A must-watch (perhaps away from meals). Highly suggested.

  4. Film Review: Angel Heart (1987)@drax1552d

    (source: tmdb.org)

When an average film goer is asked to name the film with twist ending, the most likely answer will be The Sixth Sense, 1999 film by M. Night Shyamalan which sparked annoying trend in early 2000s Hollywood. Such films were, however, being made decades before and one of the best known is Angel Heart, 1987 horror thriller written and directed by Alan Parker.

Film is based on Fallen Angel, novel by William Hjortsberg. The plot begins in 1955 New York City where the protagonist, small-time private investigator Harry Angel (played by Mickey Rourke) gets hired by Louis Cyphre (played by Robert De Niro), mysterious foreign gentleman. Angel has to track down John Liebling a.k.a. “Johnny Favorite”, popular pre-WW2 singer who is apparently in debt to Cyphre. His last known whereabouts is upstate hospital where he ended in comatose state following wartime injury. Angel goes there and finds that Johnny Favourite left the hospital years ago with the help of mysterious man and woman who bribed the staff to falsify records. Angel continues with investigation which leads him to Louisiana, where he discovers that everyone involved in the affair was involved in voodoo, black magic and dark occult rituals. He also finds out that all those people tend to die in gruesome ways, with police increasingly likely to see Angel as the murder suspect. One of the clues to resolving mystery might be a woman with whom Favourite had affair; although she died, her 17-year old daughter Epiphany Proudfoot (played by Lisa Bonet), who also happens to be a voodoo priestess, might still give Angel the answers and he also happens to be attracted to her.

Parker’s script for this film represents an interesting and, for the most part, very successful blend of film noir and supernatural horror. For Parker, who always liked to experiment with different genres, this was also an opportunity to display his sense of style. As such, Angel Heart is very dark film – both literally, because many scenes occur at night and dark spaces, and figuratively, because it features some very bloody and gruesome scenes. The most disturbing events, however, occur off screen and are, mercifully, left to viewers’ imagination. Script is, for the most part, very good, and manages to embroil viewers in mystery while carefully leaving hints about great reveal near the end. Parker, however, at times can’t resist temptation to indulge in stylistic experiments that aren’t beneficial to film. Editing is very quick, much like with the directors who took inspirations from MTV videos that were becoming vogue in 1980s. There are some details in the folm that don’t make much sense and almost semi-documentary display of African American and Cajun everyday life in Louisiana is at odds with film’s “noirish” atmosphere. Probably the most disappointing element of the film is music by Trevor Jones, a synth-based score that is often at odds with 1950s period, as well as authentic blues music that is used in some scenes.

Those shortcomings are, however, more than compensated by formidable acting. Mickey Rourke plays what could easily be remembered as one of the best roles of his career. Character of Harry Angel begins film unshaven, poorly dressed and unrefined but still possesses plenty of street smarts and possesses boyish charm that could help him in his investigation. By the end of the film that confident, almost heroic, detective turns into pathetic wreck and the ease of such transformation is good example of Rourke’s acting skills. Rourke is, on the other hand, overshadowed by Robert De Niro, who appears only in few scenes but nevertheless leaves great impresion. Louis Cyphre is mysterious and enigmatic figure, but nevertheless manages to radiate pure menace in seemingly banal gesture and lines of dialogue. Lisa Bonet also plays her role well, although her appearance became best remembered for nudity and relatively graphic sex scene, which later became subject of long battle with censors and source of controversy, because such content was difficult to reconcile with image based on family friendly sitcom The Cosby Show. Famous blues musician Brownie McGhee also did well in one of his rare acting appearances as ill-fated guitarist Toots Sweet. On the other hand, regal presence of Charlotte Rampling is wasted in the role of fortune teller that could be seen as glorified cameo. Character actor Pruitt Taylor Vince also makes one of his first notable roles as cynical New Orleans police detective.

Angel Heart is not among the best film noirs or supernatural horror films, but its quality is more than sufficient to please fans of the both genres. Furthermore, its twist at the end is intriguing enough to make many viewers watch it for the second time in order to catch clues that they might have missed. And that is something most of modern Hollywood films lack.

  5. REVIEW : "Angel Heart" (1987) - Movie by Alan Parker@mandibil2395d

There are movies that are unjustly forgotten, and Angel Heart is certainly in the top part of that list. I actually saw it in theatres ... those 32 years ago (oh dear) and back then I remembered being fairly bored. It was nothing like what I had expected and went because the guys that went along had heard about a juicy sex scene in it, with Cosby show hottie Lisa Bonet. A few years later I saw it on VHS and remember saying to myself, this is one friggin atmospheric movie and it soon became one of my all-time favourites, wondering why it did not catch me in the theatre.

    vlcsnap-2019-12-07-22h31m57s186.png

Never mind. At lot of water has run in the river since then but the movie still holds up of surprisingly well. It does have a light touch of that eighties saxophone ambience, but thankfully it is only a touch. If you have seen Mississippi Burning, the feel is sort of similar in some ways (not surprisingly as it is by the same director and both takes place partly in the south).

But then add a sense of paranoia, emotional emptiness, horror and more than a touch of noirish hitchcock and then you have an idea of Angel Heart, except it does not have too much suspense. The horror vibe comes from the religion and voodoo superstition combined with the ever present feeling of emptiness or disconnection, combined with a dose of light "The Shining" bloody splatter.

    vlcsnap-2019-12-07-22h32m56s434.png

After a sort of classic noir, private detective setup, you slowly realise that the line between reality and Harry Angel´s (played brilliantly by Mickey Rourke) experience, seems to blur together. What is supposed to be that which he experiences and what is his memories? And are we seeing everything we need to see to piece this together?

The answer is off course no and the plot is only revealed at the very end, and then still seems open to interpretations. but even if the plot is pretty well thought out and adds to the overall feel of the movie, it must be specifically recommended for its atmosphere. Alan Parker manages to catch that sense of a downward spiral on many levels.

    vlcsnap-2019-12-07-22h33m14s984.png

    vlcsnap-2019-12-07-22h33m51s898.png

Harry keeps getting flashbacks that churns around the same scenes over and over. His clothes and appearance gets more and more shabby. his emotional state seems to get more and more out of sync with reality as the amount of dead bodies pile up everywhere he goes. It is basically a trip down into the depths of a haunted soul that is rejecting his history and darkest secrets.

Rourke is well chosen for this role. His boyish and sloppy charm fits the part perfectly. Robert De Niro, as his "client", is, well, Robert De Niro as he is best. A small part though where he never gets to really shine, maybe the weakest point of the movie overall. Bonet is decent as the charming and sexy teenage voodoo girl.

    vlcsnap-2019-12-07-22h34m24s388.png

    vlcsnap-2019-12-07-22h39m47s393.png

This movie should be seen as a kind of atmospheric therapy. It has you guessing what it is really about, but the central justification, is the atmospheric and slightly paranoid feel of the cinematography, that cleverly switches between straight forward camera angels to some seriously quirky ones, sprinkled with some closeups here and there.

It goes through the whole movie and never feels pretentious or artificial, rather it all seems to gel together with Rourkes expression into a whole, that is quite unique and unforgettable. No doubt it has its inspirations from earlier masters in the genres, but not too obviously. Parker does it his own way, with some simple but effective tools.

    vlcsnap-2019-12-07-22h41m04s084.png

    vlcsnap-2019-12-07-22h39m53s957.png

Angel Heart comes highly recommended, not only as a proof that the eighties actually managed to produce decent psychological movies without too many obnoxious cliches. The acting is great, the cinematography is certainly above average and even ranks among the best that this era has to offer.

If you get the chance to pick this up, certainly do so. I have a DVD that is of mediocre quality, soft and flickery, but still it managed to deliver a decent experience. I can only imagine how nice a new 4K restoration may look.

  6. Film Review: 'Angel Heart' (1987)@janenightshade2429d

Robert De Niro plays Louis Cypher -- get it? -- a hood who wants Mickey Rourke to find a singer who signed a contract with him in Alan Parker's Angel Heart.

Angel Heart (1987), directed by Alan Parker; starring Robert De Niro, Mickey Rourke, Charlotte Rampling, and Lisa Bonet. Based on the novel, Falling Angel, by William Hjortsberg.

Angel Heart had a hard time attracting an audience when it first came out in the late 80s. That may have been because it’s an oddball brew of different genres — Satanic Panic, film noir, Southern Gothic, and slasher. It was generally ridiculed by critics, most of whom hated seeing America’s Sweetheart of the 80s, Lisa Bonet, playing a prostitute and dancing around with a headless chicken in a weird voodoo ritual. (The chicken scene isn’t nearly as ridiculous as the critics claimed.)

Today, Angel Heart is considered a horror masterpiece. It’s also the only horror film ever directed by Alan Parker, who is mostly known as the helmsman of gritty dramas like Mississippi Burning (1988) and musicals like The Commitments (1991). Despite his lack of genre cred, Parker manages to turn in a glossy, high-class — if rather gory — horror film that sticks with the viewer long after the final credits roll.

The atmosphere is excellent, as Parker establishes a smokey, hard-boiled vibe that recalls Polanski’s neo-noir masterpiece, Chinatown (1973). Mickey Rourke plays Harry Angel, a down-on-his luck New York private eye with a Chandleresque-sized case of world-weariness.

Harry's desperate for work and jumps at a missing persons case offered by a new client named Louis Cypher (Robert De Niro), who appears to be a small-time hood. And he’s a very sinister hood indeed, as he sports over-long fingernails filed to sharp points, and speaks in a weird philosophical cadence about things like why eggs "are the symbols of the soul." Plus, if his first name is shortened to “Lou," his full name becomes just a little, umm, suggestive of quite another identity. But Harry doesn’t catch on, the sap. He thinks that Lou's name is a made-up joke.

Cypher hires Harry to find a singer named Johnny Favorite, who disappeared during the war (the story is set in the 50s), shortly after Cypher signed him to an exclusive management contract. Harry snoops around and finds that Favorite’s trail leads to New Orleans, where he bumps into Favorite’s ex-wife Margaret (Charlotte Rampling), and Toots Sweet (played by the blues singer Brownie McGee), a jazzman who peformed with Favorite. Margaret swears that Johnny's dead, but Harry doesn't buy it.

Strangely, almost everyone whom Harry interrogates in New Orleans ends up dead, usually in a horribly gruesome way. Like, for example, having a head shoved into a pot full of boiling Louisiana crawfish. But Harry still doesn’t catch on, the sap.

Eventually he hooks up with one Epiphany Proudfoot (Bonet) a teenage prostitute who turns out to be Favorite’s illegitimate daughter. (She also likes to dabble in voodoo/hoodoo, hence the infamous chicken-sacrificing scene.) Harry falls in love with Epiphany—which sadly means that her future life span is not extensive. Poor Epiphany.

As the film ends in a wicked twist, Harry has a confrontation with Cypher and finds out Cypher’s true identity— as well as his own, thus revealing the fact that Harry is an even bigger sap than the one Fred MacMurray played in Double Indemnity (1944).

On disc and streaming; strong recommend.
