Anno 1975 la geniale mente di Stanley Kubrick partorisce nelle sale cinematografiche un film controverso ed ambiguo, ambientato in un contesto storico di alto livello. I dati riportano che non abbia avuto l'audience che avrebbe meritato, scarsa l'affluenza nelle sale, ma ciononostante è stato considerato dalla critica uno dei film migliori del regista, anche se non tra i più conosciuti.

Questo film narra la storia di uomo che pensa esclusivamente a se stesso: egoista, cinico, ambizioso ed avido. Tratto da un romanzo del 1844 "Le memorie di Barry Lyndon" di William Makepeace Thackeray. Ambientato nel XVIII secolo, girato in tre diverse località: Irlanda, Inghilterra e Germania. Ogni ripresa somiglia ad un quadro, è considerata una delle migliori rappresentazioni cinematografiche del settecento mai realizzata nella storia del cinema, questo grazie anche all'utilizzo della luce naturale diurna e con l'aiuto del fuoco in quelle notturne.

Il film è stato diviso in due parti, di cui la prima parte è intitolata:

Con quali mezzi Redmond Barry acquisì lo stile e il titolo di Barry Lyndon.

Questo titolo la dice lunga perché il protagonista userà qualunque mezzo a disposizione per ottenere i risultati da lui sperati. Inizia con Barry che è ancora un giovincello squattrinato molto particolare, innamorato della cugina promessa dalla propria famiglia ad un ufficiale dell'esercito. Questa scelta non viene assolutamente condivisa dal giovane Barry che sfida a duello il più anziano pretendente ferendolo a morte. Dopo questa ambigua scelta di interporsi in un amore difficilmente realizzabile sarà costretto a scappare dalla sua terra natia, l'Irlanda, inizierà per lui un epopea di disavventure alquanto opprimenti. Derubato dei soldi lasciategli dalla madre si vede costretto ad arruolarsi nell'esercito britannico dove si renderà protagonista di alcune azioni degne di nota ed altre molto meno. Verrà schierato in prima linea nella guerra dei sette anni contro i francesi. Dopo aver assistito al massacro delle proprie truppe e venendo a conoscenza che l'ufficiale da lui sfidato in duello è ancora vivo in quanto la sua pistola era stata truccata, decide in seguito per paura di morire di disertare. Durante la fuga si imbatte in un dialogo tra due ufficiali omosessuali impegnati ad amoreggiare, discorso in cui uno dei due confida all'altro di dover consegnare un messaggio importante al "Generale Percival Williamson" nella città di Brema. Barry ruba loro abiti, documenti e tanto di cavallo e continuerà la sua fuga fingendo di dover portare egli stesso il messaggio.

Durante il viaggio, dopo una breve storia amorosa si imbatte nell'esercito prussiano che riesce facilmente a smascherarlo. Le opzioni a lui proposte sono due: la condanna a morte o l'arruolamento nelle forze prussiane. Naturalmente la voglia di vivere è in lui troppo forte vista la sua tendenza estremamente narcisista ed opta per la seconda scelta. Grazie ad alcuni atti di alto livello gli viene affidato un incarico da infiltrato in cui accompagna un giocatore d'azzardo chiamato "le Chevalier" del quale deve riportare ogni movimento. La sua vena patriottica però non gli permette di tradire il rapporto creatosi con quest'ultimo e si lascia andare a gesti inconsulti, riesce a farlo espellere dal territorio prussiano riportando le sue malefatte ai suoi superiori ma in realtà si fingerà egli stesso "le Chevalier" durante l'espulsione dal territorio mentre quest'ultimo scompare. I due andranno avanti a lavorare assieme in bische clandestine attirando l'attenzione di alcune nobili e belle donne, tra cui "Lady Lyndon" che Barry sposerà alla morte del suo compagno di avventure.

La seconda parte del film è intitolata:

Resoconto delle sventure e dei disastri che accaddero a Barry Lyndon.

In questo seconda parte Barry da il peggio di sé stesso, prima di sposarsi era solito riporre mille attenzioni alla sua amata, poco dopo il matrimonio smette quasi di considerarla; il suo disprezzo verso di lei viene raffigurato nella scena in cui le sputa del fumo in faccia dalla propria pipa mentre gli parla. Dopo averla messa in cinta per avere un erede penserà esclusivamente a impossessarsi dell'eredità della sposa in qualunque maniera possibile, troverà però un ostacolo insormontabile, il suo figlioccio "Lord Bullingdon", che una volta diventato maturo intuirà le intenzioni del patrigno e si opporrà con tutte le forze al suo tentativo di scalata al successo. La storia si concluderà nel modo in cui il protagonista si merita. Un personaggio che sa racchiudere e trasmettere molte sensazioni in contrasto tra loro: amore, odio, orgoglio, disprezzo, rabbia, pena, avidità, ignoranza, infamia, codardia, fedeltà ed infedeltà. Un film che mi ha toccato ed è rimasto impresso nella mente per la propria capacità di donare sensazioni forti , per la maggior parte negative, lascia spazio a poca fantasia, il personaggio raffigurato da Kubrick è uno dei peggiori che abbia mai visto su pellicola. Riflessioni continue durante il film pervadono la mia mente, un esempio da non imitare assolutamente ed evitare in quasi tutte le sue forme, anche se a tratti alterni è quasi riuscito a farmi tenerezza. Considerato un capolavoro, affermazione della quale non posso che concordare al 100%. Bello, intenso, appassionante, triste, a tratti deprimente.

1975 The brilliant mind of Stanley Kubrick gives birth to a controversial and ambiguous film on theatres, set in a high-level historical context. The data show that it didn't have the audience he deserved, the influx was low, whatever it was considered by critics as one of the best films of the director, even if not among the most famous.

This film tells the story of a man who thinks exclusively of himself: selfish, cynical, ambitious and greedy. Based on the 1844's novel "The Luck of Barry Lyndon" by William Makepeace Thackeray. Set in the eighteenth century, shoting in three different locations: Ireland, England and Germany. Each scenarios resembles a painting, it is considered one of the best seven-year cinematographic representations ever made in the cinema's history, thanks also to the use of natural daylight and with the help of fire in the nighttime ones.

The film has been divided into two parts, the first act of which is titled:

By what means Redmond Barry acquired the style and title of Barry Lyndon.

The title says a lot because the protagonist will use whatever means available to get the results he hoped for. He starts with Barry, who is still a very special young penniless youngster, in love with his cousin, promised by his family to an army officer. This choice is absolutely not shared by the young Barry who challenges the older suitor in a duel by wounding him to death. After this ambiguous choice to interpose in a hardly feasible love will be forced to flee from his homeland, Ireland, will begin for him an epic of somewhat oppressive misadventures. Stolen from the money left to his mother is forced to enlist in the British army where he will be the protagonist of some actions worthy of note and others much less. It will be deployed in the forefront of the seven-year war against the French. After witnessing the massacre of his troops and learning that the officer he challenged in a duel is still alive because his gun had been rigged, he decided later for fear of dying to defect the army. During the escape he comes across a dialogue between two homosexual officers who are busy flirting, one in which he confides to another that he must deliver an important message to "General Percival Williamson" in the city of Bremen. Barry steals his clothes, documents and a horse and will continue his escaping pretending to have to carry the message himself.

During the trip, after a short love story, he comes across the Prussian army that easily manages to unmask him. The options proposed to him are two: the death sentence or enlistment in the Prussian forces. Naturally the desire to live is too strong in him, given his extremely narcissistic tendency and opts for the second choice. Thanks to some high-level actions, he is given an infiltration assignment in which he accompanies a gambler called "le Chevalier", to whom he must report every movement. His patriotic vein, however, does not allow him to betray the relationship created with him and lets himself go to unconscious gestures, he manages to expel him from the Prussian territory reporting his wrongdoings to his superiors but in reality he will pretend himself to be "le Chevalier" during the exclusion from the territory while the latter disappears. The two will go on working together in clandestine gambling dens attracting the attention of some noble and beautiful women, including "Lady Lyndon" that Barry will marry on the death of her adventurous companion.

The second part of the film is titled:

Containing an account of the misfortunes and disasters which befell Barry Lyndon.

In this second part Barry gives the worst of himself, before getting married he used to put a lot of attention to his beloved, shortly after the wedding he almost ceased to consider her; his contempt for her is portrayed in the scene where he spits smoke in his face from his pipe as he speaks to him. After the wife pregnancy he will only think about taking over the heritage in any way that he can, but he will find an insurmountable obstacle, his stepson "Lord Bullingdon", who when he will be mature realizing his stepfather's intentions and he will oppose with all his strength to his attempt to climb the success. The story will end in the way the leading actor deserves. A character that knows how to enclose and transmit many feelings in contrast with each other: love, hate, pride, contempt, anger, pain, greed, ignorance, infamy, cowardice, loyalty and infidelity. A film that touched me and remained impressed in the mind for its ability to give strong feelings, for the most part negative, it doesn't leaves too much to your imagination, the character painted by Kubrick is one of the worst I've ever seen on film history. Continuous reflections during the film pervade my mind, an example not to be imitated absolutely and avoid in almost all its forms, even if at times it is almost able to make me tenderness. Considered a masterpiece, a statement of which I can just agree 100%. Beautiful, intense, exciting, sad, sometimes depressing.
