Nic Sheff is a young man full of life, a lover of writing and with a life full of love from his father David Sheff, a young man with a promising future thanks to his good grades and his great intelligence. But inside him there is something that is not right, he does not feel complete, despite having everything. That's when he resorts to smoking, drinking, and as this was not enough, he gets into the world of drugs.

This movie is a 2018 drama where we can see a father and an entire family doing everything possible to help his son with his drug addiction problem, especially crystal meth. One of the hardest drugs, where Nic feels full of life when he tries it but every time he needs more and more of this drug.

La decadencia que tiene Nic se ve a través de la película durante dos horas, dónde llega hasta robarle y pedirle dinero a su papá para poder comprar su droga. Mucha gente piensa que las personas que caen en las drogas es porque tuvieron una infancia difícil pero esta pelicula demuestra todo lo contrario, el lo tiene todo, sus padres se preocupan por el, tiene dos hermanos que lo aman, tiene una madrastra que lo trata como si fuera su propio hijo, tuvo una infancia feliz, lleno de momentos junto a su padre, y aún así el cae en esta terrible adicción.

Nic's decadence is seen throughout the two hour film, where he goes as far as stealing and asking his dad for money to buy his drugs. Many people think that people who fall into drugs is because they had a difficult childhood but this movie shows the opposite, he has everything, his parents care about him, he has two brothers who love him, he has a stepmother who treats him as if he were her own son, he had a happy childhood, full of moments with his father, and yet he falls into this terrible addiction.

Lo llevan a rehabilitación y en una de las últimas veces que va dura un año sobrio, va a la universidad, conoce nuevas personas, está en una ciudad diferente, pero esto no hace que sea diferente para el y recae. Llega hacer muchas cosas malas como ponerse agresivo producto de la misma droga, conoce a una chica y está también entra en el mundo de Nic, drogándose junto con el.

They take him to rehab and one of the last times he goes he lasts a year sober, goes to college, meets new people, is in a different city, but this doesn't make it any different for him and he relapses. He gets to do a lot of bad things like getting aggressive because of the drugs, he meets a girl and she also enters Nic's world, getting high along with him.

David, el padre de Nic, hace todo lo que está en sus manos para tratar de salvar a su hijo cuestionando que hizo mal si en todos los recuerdos hay momentos de felicidad y solo conocía a un niño lleno de vida y no entiende en qué momento el se pierde en el camino.

David, Nic's father, does everything in his power to try to save his son questioning what he did wrong if in all the memories there are moments of happiness and he only knew a child full of life and does not understand at what point he loses his way.

Es una historia dura, tanto Nic como David sufren, Nic porque no entiende que está enfermo y necesita ayuda y David porque no sabe que hacer para ayudarlo. El final es bastante abierto pero te deja con la idea de qué tal vez Nic nunca pueda recuperarse o incluso muera. Me llegó mucho al corazón está película porque entendí que a veces aunque tu familia haga lo mejor por ti, no estamos exentos de caer en algún problema como el alcohol, las drogas o en un trastorno mental.

It is a tough story, both Nic and David suffer, Nic because he doesn't understand that he is sick and needs help and David because he doesn't know what to do to help him. The ending is quite open but it leaves you with the idea that Nic may never recover or even die. I was very touched by this movie because I understood that sometimes even if your family does the best for you, we are not exempt from falling into a problem like alcohol, drugs or a mental disorder.

Hitting rock bottom at certain times in life can be very hard, demoralizing, and damning; but falling alone, without the support of family and close friends can be even more tormenting and difficult to overcome. Many are the reasons for succumbing to that infinite abyss of darkness, loneliness, depression, insecurities, and perhaps in a sum of all of them, drug addiction.

The film Beautiful Boy, is an adapted screenplay of novels that have told from different perspectives the story of Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet) in his struggle to overcome his addiction to methamphetamines, and that of his father David (Steve Carell) for trying at all costs to help him out of the pit that consumed him when he was just 18 years old.

Tocar fondo en determinados momentos de la vida puede ser muy duro, desmoralizante, condenatorio; pero caer solo, sin el apoyo de la familia y los amigos cercanos, puede ser aún más tormentoso y difícil de superar. Muchas son las razones para caer en ese abismo infinito de oscuridad, la soledad, la depresión, las inseguridades, y tal vez en una suma de todas ellas, la adicción a las drogas.

La película Beautiful Boy, siempre serás mi hijo, es un guión adaptado de novelas que han relatado desde distintas perspectivas la historia de Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet) en su lucha por superar la adicción a las metanfetaminas, y la de su padre David (Steve Carell) por intentar a toda costa ayudarlo a salir de ese foso que lo consumía siendo apenas un joven con 18 años de edad.

Despite being raised between two families due to the shared custody between his father and mother, Nic grew up surrounded by affection, and had a happy childhood and adolescence. He developed a very intimate relationship with his father, fraternity, and complicity; even his stepmother, David's new wife, welcomed him with affection as part of her new family. However, in that process of transition and independence that comes with youth, Nic experienced what seemed like a norm at his age, parties, alcohol, cigarettes, then marijuana, until he crossed that fine line between fun and addiction. He tried every drug in his path and became addicted to methamphetamines.

His story is not unlike that of many young people at that age, who let themselves be influenced by the trend of the moment believing that they are in control of the situation. In that stage of rebellion in which hormones make them feel invincible, they convince themselves that they will be able to quit whenever they want. The truth is that the dependence generated by this type of psychotropic substance traps them and corners them irremediably in a dead end.

A pesar de haberse criado entre dos familias por la custodia compartida entre su padre y su madre, Nic creció rodeado de cariño, tuvo una infancia y una adolescencia feliz. Desarrolló una relación muy íntima con su padre, de fraternidad, de complicidad; incluso su madrasta, la nueva esposa de David, lo acogió con cariño como parte de su nueva familia. Sin embargo, en ese proceso de transición e independencia que se vive en la juventud, Nic experimentó lo que pareciese una norma a su edad, fiestas, alcohol, cigarrillos, luego marihuana, hasta cruzar esa delgada línea entre la diversión y la adicción. Probó todas las drogas a su paso y se hizo adicto a las metanfetaminas.

Su historia no es distinta a la de muchos jóvenes a su edad que se dejan influenciar por la tendencia del momento creyendo que ellos tienen el control de la situación. En esa etapa de rebeldía en la que las hormonas les hacen sentir invencibles, se convencen a sí mismos que podrán dejarlo cuando quieran. La verdad, es que la dependencia que genera este tipo de sustancias psicotrópicas los atrapa y los acorrala irremediablemente en un callejón sin salida.

The reality of a drug addict is very difficult, some live in absolute denial of recognizing themselves as drug addicts, others, dare to ask for help to be admitted to rehabilitation centers. In this detoxification process, they suffer relapses, which experts say are part of the recovery process. The truth is that this process is painful not only for the addict but also for those around him. It can be frustrating to see all the progress, all that has been achieved in that time of detoxification in which the patient has been sober has been clean, being lost in a moment of vulnerability and/or human frailty.

In the film we see a desperate father wanting to understand what is going on with his son, wanting to experience his emotions to understand how he really feels. It is admirable the tolerance and patience that a father can have during this process, it is not easy to deal with the anguish that an overdose can be fatal, or having to see how that being that you love so much, your own son, is being destroyed little by little, is being consumed in his own misery.

La realidad de un adicto a las drogas es muy difícil, algunos viven en la negación absoluta de reconocerse drogadictos, otros se atreven a pedir ayuda para ser internados en centros de rehabilitación. En ese proceso de desintoxicación, sufren recaídas, que según dicen los expertos, forman parte de la recuperación. Lo cierto, es que ese proceso es doloroso no solo para el adicto, sino para quienes le rodean. Puede resultar frustrante ver que todo el avance, todo lo logrado en ese tiempo de desintoxicación en el que el paciente ha estado sobrio, ha estado limpio, se pierda en un momento de debilidad y/o fragilidad humana.

En la película vemos a un padre desesperado queriendo entender qué pasa con su hijo, queriendo experimentar sus emociones para comprender cómo se siente realmente. Es admirable la tolerancia y paciencia que puede tener un padre durante este proceso, no es fácil lidiar con la angustia de que una sobredosis pueda ser fatal, o tener que ver como ese ser que tanto amas, tu propio hijo, se va destruyendo poco a poco, se va consumiendo en su propia miseria.

While no parent intends their actions to harm their children, sometimes this attempt to strengthen ties in the relationship can lead us to commit excesses that far from being a positive addition, are detrimental. There is a scene in the film in which Nic is smoking marijuana and invites his father to do so, it is a moment of complicity between the two, as he also did it in his youth without regrettable consequences.

In this regard, and this is a very personal opinion, I believe, of course, that we should be friends with our children, but there must be certain clearly defined limits between who imposes authority and who must submit to it. I know this may sound scandalous to many, I can be labeled as a dictator if you like, but those limits are what demarcates respect because in the end we parents are role models for our children, we are their example, and our behavior is reflected in theirs.

This is not to say that David encouraged Nic's misfortune with drugs, but it may have been an early warning of what could happen in the future. In any case, everything David did to rescue and save his son from the world of destruction that drugs and alcohol represent, is touching. The story itself of Nic and his father is beautiful, it is sobering, it is motivating, and above all, it is inspiring for those who live that tragedy.

Si bien ningún padre pretende que sus acciones perjudiquen a sus hijos, en ocasiones ese intento de estrechar lazos en la relación nos puede inducir a cometer excesos que lejos de sumar, resten. Hay una escena en la película en la que Nic está fumando marihuana e invita a su padre a hacerlo, es un momento de complicidad entre ambos, pues éste también lo hizo en su juventud sin consecuencias que lamentar.

Al respecto, y es una opinión muy personal, yo creo, por supuesto, que debemos ser amigos de nuestros hijos, pero deben existir ciertos límites claramente definidos entre quien impone la autoridad y quien debe someterse a ella. Yo sé que esto puede sonar escandaloso para muchos, me pueden tildar de dictadora si gustan, pero son esos límites lo que demarcan el respeto, pues finalmente los padres somos un modelo a seguir para los hijos, somos su ejemplo, nuestra conducta se refleja en la de ellos.

Con lo anterior no quiero decir que David propiciara el infortunio de Nic con las drogas, pero sí que pudo haber sido una alerta temprano de lo que podría ocurrir a futuro. En cualquier caso, todo lo que hizo David por rescatar y salvar a su hijo de ese mundo de destrucción que representan las drogas y el alcohol, es conmovedor. La historia en si de Nic y su padre es hermosa, es aleccionadora, es motivadora, y sobre todo inspiradora para quienes viven esa tragedia.

I thought the staging, by both Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet, was fantastic. I'm so used to seeing Steve Carell doing comedies, that I really enjoy this side of drama and character. Chalamet, who is not exactly my favorite actor, I have nothing but praise for his performance, he was great, so much so, that it earned him several nominations for different awards for best supporting actor.

I could not stop recommending you to watch this movie, which as I mentioned is inspired by a real-life story. It is a movie worth watching. It is available on Amazon Prime programming, which by the way is worth mentioning, this streaming network is making an important turn in capturing new audiences.

La puesta en escena, tanto de Steve Carell como el Timothée Chalamet, me pareció fantástica. Estoy tan acostumbrada a ver a Steve Carell haciendo comedias, que disfruto mucho esta faceta de drama y carácter. De Chalamet, que no es precisamente mi actor favorito, no tengo sino reconocimiento a su actuación, estuvo estupendo, tanto, que le mereció varias nominaciones en distintas premiaciones como mejor actor de reparto.

No podría dejar de recomendarles ver esta película, que como mencioné está inspirada en una historia de la vida real. Es una película digna de verla. Está disponible en la programación de Amazon Prime, que por cierto vale la pena mencionar, esta cadena de streaming está dando un giro importante en la captación de nuevas audiencias.

Drug addiction plagues America. The ubiquitous drugs of choice may change, but addiction is ever present. Whether it is crack, crystal meth or opiods, addiction remains consistent. Drugs that are often associated with poverty and urban or rural America are found in every class or neighborhood. Beautiful Boy tackles this issue from the personal perspective of writer David Sheff (Steve Carell) whose son Nic (Timothee Chalamet) struggled with addiction and relapse.

Beautiful Boy begins with David Sheff searching for answers regarding crystal meth. It flashes back, perhaps a bit too often, to provide backstory on how his son Nic went from aspiring writer to meth addict. Sheff and his son have a very close relationship. He has custody of his son, who he raises with his second wife Karen (Maura Tierney) and two younger siblings. Nic seems to be a kid with a good heart but confused mind. He struggles with addiction, followed by embarrassment for his bad decisions. It becomes a vicious cycle that consumes him. Periods of sobriety are mixed with an increasingly destructive addiction that twice nearly costs Nic his life. David struggles with his love for his son, his love for his other children and understanding that he lacks the capacity to fix his son.

I wanted to like this film. It's not that I didn't like it. It had a lot of potential that it seemed to leave on the table. The film was too brooding. It felt pretentious at times. The story also relied heavily on flashbacks, to the point that it was like a ping-pong table at times. I don't mind flashbacks, but they should move the story along, not bog it down. This story felt bogged down. It moved at an incredibly slow pace to the point of sheer boredom. It was as though they were trying to stretch a short story to feature length and did so with a lot of filler. The narrative arc lacked impact. It was too close to real life. The endless cycle of addiction seldom has an arc, other than death. This film was just circular with a meandering ending that left me feeling unfulfilled. The film attempts to reconcile that with a few "true story" panels that follow up on how things turned out. It may have been more credible/rewarding had they actually had short interviews with the real people or something a bit more substantive. After a heavy, brooding film, we need something a bit more substantive to tie the story together.

I can't think of an up-and-coming actor who could have been better in the role of Nic Sheff. Timothee Chalamet was exceptional in the role. He has an instant likability factor that added strength to the role. He seems to be a kid with a good heart, with struggles that are bigger than his ability to cope. He allowed me to feel compassion where I might otherwise be a bit jaded at bad decisions. In this sense, the story succeeded. I am certain that was the main objective, although it hurt the qualities of this film as cinema. I'm not so sure about Carell in the role as Nic's dad. As dad, he was great. And I like Carell. But his performance was uneven to me. His emotional scenes felt off. In a smaller role, Tierney added the raw emotion I was looking for. She was a great choice for Nic's step-mother. The casting was fairly solid. I just wasn't loving Carell at times.

Thematically, Beautiful Boy is about drug addiction. As such, it contains graphic depictions of drug use that may make your skin crawl. While the film lacks nudity, there is a sex scene. But the R rating from the MPAA ties primarily to the drug use. The film also has a bit of strong language. Based on the depictions of drug use, I would consider restricting this film to teens or older. There are one or two scenes that were tough to watch. The film has a run time of two hours.

The subject matter in Beautiful Boy is an important issue. We have moved from meth to an opiod crisis, but the underlying issue of addiction remains unchanged. It is a sickness that plagues America and touches every community. This film puts a face on the issue, bringing it closer to home for people who might still think that it is something that doesn't affect them or their communities. Chalamet did an excellent job of becoming the face of addiction. A kid we can like and root for. Yet the film leaves a lot on the table. The painful pacing and choppy time jumps sucked any fluidity out of this film, making it tedious to watch at times. I liked the story but not the story-telling, which makes it difficult to give this film a fair rating. I am going to be a tad bit generous. 7/10.
