   Richard Linklater gained many fans with Before Sunrise, his delectable romantic drama about young American and young Frenchwoman spending magical night walking on the streets of Vienna after a chance encounter. However, many of those fans were left frustrated with its ambiguous ending, leaving the question of whether the protagonists would meet again unanswered. The 2004 sequel Before Sunset provides a clear answer to this question, serving as the second part of a trilogy concluding with Before Midnight in 2013.

   Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reprising their roles as Jesse and Céline, and the plot, set nine years after their fateful encounter, is set in Paris. Despite a pact to meet again six months later, the reunion never materialized. Jesse is now a successful writer and his latest best-selling novel is inspired by the events in Vienna. He is promoting it in famous Parisian bookstore Shakespeare and Company, where Céline, now working as an environmental activist, comes to see him. In short time before Jesse’s flight black to New York, they discuss their lives, reasons for missing each other, and their unhappiness, and slowly realise that they were meant to be together.

   While Before Sunrise worked as realistic, yet conventional drama, approach in Before Sunset differs from is more experimental. The plot is entirely focused on Jesse and Céline, taking place in real time, which results in an unusually short running time. This format allows the passage of time and the characters' ageing to play a significant role in the concept. Unlike the idealistic romantics of nine years ago, Jesse and Céline are now people in their thirties, acutely aware of life's harsh realities and the far-reaching consequences of their choices.

   Linklater has built the film around the talents of Hawke and Delpy, who co-wrote the script, taking the passage of time and their own ageing into account, and even adding bits from their real lives into the charaters. The subplot involving Jesse's unhappy marriage and desire to maintain it for the sake of his son is partially inspired by Hawke's own experiences with his marriage to Uma Thurman. The acting in Before Sunset is superb, with both Hawke and Delpy leaving parts of themselves in their roles and maintaining the excellent chemistry from the first film.

   However, Before Sunset is a part of trilogy, and some parts of the film are always better than others. Before Sunset is the arguably the worst. It lacks the romantic charm of the first film and can be overly experimental and clever for its own good. The ambiguous ending also leaves an impression of repetitiveness, while the way of answering questions raised in the first film can make an impression of "retconning".

   Despite these minor complaints, Before Sunset is still a very good film, and its value increases when viewed as part of the larger trilogy, which, as whole, represents one of the best works of cinema in past few decades.

   ¡Hola amigos de la querida comunidad de Movies & Tv, ¡hoy tengo que compartir con ustedes mi amor y obsesión por una película que simplemente me ha dejado sin palabras! Estoy hablando de la maravillosa, la hermosa, la increíble Before Sunset. Si todavía no la han visto, les juro que están perdiéndose de algo realmente especial. Me encanta esta historia y cómo muestran la relación de Celine y Jesse al pasar de los años y lo mucho que han cambiado pero que aún sigue la chispa del amor encendida dentro de sus corazones.    Antes de entrar en detalles, me gustaría hacerles un pequeño resumen de la trama, porque sé que no todos están familiarizados con esta joya del cine indie. Así que, aquí vamos. La película es una secuela de "Before Sunrise" y retoma la historia nueve años después. Celine (interpretada por la hermosa y talentosa Julie Delpy) y Jesse (encarnado por el encantador Ethan Hawke) se encuentran en París después de no verse desde su encuentro romántico en Viena. Ambos están emocionalmente agotados y con el corazón roto por la vida adulta y las responsabilidades que la acompañan. El encuentro es bastante sorpresivo sobre todo para Jesse (Ethan Hawke) ya que el ahora es una persona que se convirtió en escritor de un libro que lo ha vuelto algo famoso y en una firma de libros se reencuentra con Celine y es algo tan emocionante por qué aunque ellos dijeron que se verían seis meses después de la última vez que se vieron por distintos motivos no pudieron verse y ahora Celine se aparece frente a él y es como si volvieran a ser los dos jóvenes que se conocieron en un tren y que quedaron flechados.

   Before I go into details, I'd like to give you a little summary of the plot, because I know not everyone is familiar with this indie film gem. So, here we go. The film is a sequel to "Before Sunrise" and picks up the story nine years later. Celine (played by the beautiful and talented Julie Delpy) and Jesse (played by the charming Ethan Hawke) meet in Paris after not seeing each other since their romantic encounter in Vienna. Both are emotionally drained and heartbroken by adult life and the responsibilities that come with it. The meeting is quite a surprise especially for Jesse (Ethan Hawke) as he is now a person who has become a writer of a book that has made him somewhat famous and at a book signing he is reunited with Celine and it is so exciting because although they said they would see each other six months after the last time they saw each other for various reasons they could not see each other and now Celine appears in front of him and it is as if they are back to being the two young people who met on a train and were smitten.

   El formato de la película es único y es una de las cosas que más amo de ella. Está compuesta principalmente por un diálogo interminable y realista mientras Celine y Jesse pasean por las calles de París. No hay muchos cortes y eso realmente te hace sentir como si estuvieras ahí con ellos, escuchando cada palabra que intercambian. Es mágico, se siente como si estuvieras viendo a dos amigos que están enamorados hablar sobre sus vidas y de todo a la vez. La química entre Julie Delpy y Ethan Hawke es, sin duda, lo mejor de esta película. Te hacen creer en el amor verdadero y en la conexión profunda entre dos almas. Su actuación es tan natural y apasionada que hace que te olvides de que es solo ficción. Además, las conversaciones son tan profundas y llenas de sinceridad que no puedes evitar sentirte identificado en algún momento. Esas conversaciones sobre la vida, el amor y la felicidad son tan cercanas y reales que se te quedan grabadas en el corazón.

   The format of the film is unique and is one of the things I love most about it. It's mostly composed of endless, realistic dialogue as Celine and Jesse stroll through the streets of Paris. There aren't many cuts and it really makes you feel like you're right there with them, listening to every word they exchange. It's magical, it feels like you're watching two friends who are in love talk about their lives and everything at once. The chemistry between Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke is definitely the best thing about this movie. They make you believe in true love and the deep connection between two souls. Their acting is so natural and passionate that it makes you forget that it's just fiction. Also, the conversations are so deep and full of sincerity that you can't help but feel identified at some point. Those conversations about life, love and happiness are so close and real that they stick in your heart.

   Ahora, dejando de lado mi pasión por los actores, hablemos de la trama en sí. La forma en que se desarrolla la historia es simplemente fascinante. Todo ocurre en tiempo real, Celine y Jesse deambulan por las calles parisinas. A medida que avanzan en su conversación, descubrimos más detalles sobre su pasado y nos damos cuenta de las razones por las que no pudieron estar juntos después de su encuentro en Viena. Una de mis partes favoritas de la película es cuando Celine canta una canción en un hermoso café. No puedo evitar sentirme completamente hipnotizada por su voz y su pasión mientras llena la sala con su música. Realmente no puedo describirlo con palabras, es algo que debes experimentar por ti mismo.

   Now, leaving aside my passion for the actors, let's talk about the plot itself. The way the story unfolds is simply fascinating. It all takes place in real time, Celine and Jesse wander the Parisian streets. As they progress in their conversation, we find out more details about their past and realize the reasons why they couldn't be together after their meeting in Vienna. One of my favorite parts of the film is when Celine sings a song in a beautiful cafe. I can't help but be completely mesmerized by her voice and her passion as she fills the room with her music. I really can't describe it in words, it's something you have to experience for yourself.

   Pero lo que realmente hace que esta película sea tan especial es el mensaje que transmite. Nos muestra el poder del destino y cómo dos personas pueden ser almas gemelas destinadas a encontrarse en diferentes momentos de sus vidas. También nos recuerda que el tiempo es efímero y que debemos apreciar cada momento que tenemos con las personas que amamos. Antes de despedirme, quiero mencionar cómo esta película me hizo reflexionar sobre las decisiones que tomamos en la vida. ¿Qué hubiera pasado si Celine y Jesse se hubieran quedado juntos en Viena? ¿Cómo serían sus vidas si hubieran tomado un camino diferente? Esas preguntas me mantuvieron despierta durante noches enteras, pensando en las infinitas posibilidades que el destino puede traer.

   But what really makes this film so special is the message it conveys. It shows us the power of destiny and how two people can be soul mates destined to meet at different times in their lives. It also reminds us that time is fleeting and that we should cherish every moment we have with the people we love. Before I say goodbye, I want to mention how this movie made me reflect on the choices we make in life. What would have happened if Celine and Jesse had stayed together in Vienna? What would their lives be like if they had taken a different path? Those questions kept me up for nights on end, thinking about the endless possibilities that fate can bring.

   Before Sunset es una película que te atrapa desde el principio y no te suelta hasta los créditos finales. Es una historia de amor apasionada y llena de emociones que te hará reír, llorar y reflexionar sobre tu propia vida.    Before Sunset is a movie that grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go until the end credits.    La secuela de "Before Sunrise"

   El mes pasado subí la reseña de una película que había visto varias veces y que me sigue pareciendo una de las historias más románticas que he conocido, la cinta independiente Before sunrise y comenté que formaba parte de una trilogía. Bien, días después vi de nuevo la segunda parte que, si bien no la había visto tanto como la primera, también la conocía.

   Se trata del film de 2004, Before Sunset (Antes del atardecer) en la que vuelven a participar los mismos colaboradores de la primera entrega: Richard Linklater como director, Ethan Hawke y Julie Delpy como protagonistas. Para quienes no hayan visto la primera parte, los pongo en contexto: Jesse (Hawke) y Celine (Delpy) se conocieron en un tren y pasaron juntos una noche inolvidable paseando por las calles de Viena. Al final de la cinta, prometieron encontrarse de nuevo seis meses más tarde en ese mismo lugar, pero los créditos aparecen antes de que llegue ese día. Cuando inicia esta segunda parte, lo primero que nos preguntamos es ¿se encontraron? ¿qué ha pasado desde entonces? ¿cuánto tiempo ha transcurrido?. Before Sunset parte nueve años después de aquella noche en Viena y se desarrolla por las calles de otra ciudad europea, esta vez un poco más cliché, pero no menos romántica: París. Un punto a favor que tuvo la primera cinta fue precisamente evitar los lugares gastados de las historias de amor; sin embargo, tiene sentido haberla situado en la ciudad de la luz porque Celine es francesa y vive allí; y hacer que se encontraran casualmente en cualquier otra ciudad habría sido abusar de la confianza del espectador hasta el punto del absurdo.

   Jesse llega a París promocionando una novela que ha escrito y la película comienza con él en una tertulia literaria en una pequeña librería, hablando sobre su libro y contando anécdotas. Mientras comenta y contesta las preguntas que le hacen, vemos estos flashbacks de la película anterior y nos damos cuenta de que su novela cuenta aquella noche en Viena nueve años atrás. Henry Miller dijo "Si quieres olvidarte de una mujer, conviértela en literatura" y es precisamente lo que ha hecho Jesse con Celine, aunque no con la misma motivación. Cuando está a punto de finalizar la lectura, Jesse mira un momento a la ventana que da hacia la calle y ve a la francesa que amó una noche y cada día desde entonces aunque no la hubiera vuelto a ver en todo ese tiempo.

   La historia parece repetirse: deciden caminar por las calles de París, ir a tomarse un café y conversar, pero apenas tienen un rato porque el avión de Jesse sale esa noche de vuelta a los EEUU y sentimos que después de haber esperado tantos años, cualquier lapso será insuficiente para compensarlos. Los enamorados hablan de Viena, de por qué no se encontraron ese día y de cómo atesoran ese recuerdo en su corazón. Celine leyó la novela de Jesse y obviamente sabe que habla de ella; por eso fue a la librería, sabía que él estaría allí y quería verlo de nuevo. Una vez más, el pilar de la película es el guión, en el que esta vez colaboraron los protagonistas y le dieron mucha fuerza y credibilidad a sus personajes que nos parecen un poco más maduros, pero que conservan la esencia de la primera entrega. La química en pantalla de Hawke y Delpy es fantástica y la forma en que hacen ver cómo todo fluye de forma natural y espontánea, hace que uno se meta en la historia.

   La música, esta vez a cargo de Delpy, es sublime (hay dos canciones que te quedan resonando en la mente tras el final de la película) y la dirección es excelente, con esas tomas en movimiento en las que caminamos con Jesse y Celine por las calles de París. Sin ser una toma única como la de 1917, sí consigue al igual que ese drama bélico, romper la cuarta pared y transmitir la sensación de que también el espectador se encuentra en el lugar.

   

   Los protagonistas y el Director

   Pero, nuevamente, lo más destacado es el guión (fue nominado al Oscar) que habla sobre ser parte de la memoria de alguien más, de envejecer, estar en el momento, del matrimonio, la muerte del romanticismo y que deja frases como "El deseo es el combustible de la vida" o "No se puede reemplazar a nadie porque todas las personas están hechas de muchos detalles específicos". También habla de cómo, cuando somos jóvenes, creemos que vamos a conocer y a conectar con muchas personas, pero luego nos damos cuenta de que no es así; pero sobre todo, la película es un monumento a las segundas oportunidades que no siempre se tienen, pero que cuando existe la más mínima posibilidad de tener algo que creíamos perdido, nos aterra con la misma fuerza con la que nos atrapa, porque parece exigirnos que, esta vez, no la dejemos escapar. Para dejarlos con ganas de más, les diré que es uno de mis finales favoritos del cine y que la película está incluida en la lista de cien películas del siglo XXI de la BBC. Recomendada para todos, en especial para los románticos.
