  1. Spirited Away / El Viaje de Chihiro / Movie Review@josehany452d

Since since last week the creation of images with ChatGPT in the very Studio Ghibli style has become quite popular and to do honor to this, I thought of putting my review of one of the quite popular animations and I'm sure everyone knows it.

Spirited Away, as many of us know, is a Japanese animation in film format. In this story we are going to see a little of Chihiro's evolution.

    IMG_5397.jpeg Source

Who is Chirito and what is this about?

Chihiro is a 10-year-old girl who after graduating from school, her parents decide to move, while they are making that car trip, they end up entering a small magical and spiritual town.

Unfortunately, not everything is good, because from the very beginning, Chihiro’s parents ended up becoming pigs and from there it gives free rein to the film.

From here we see what Chihiro's journey really is, since it ends in a strange town, far from home, with a witch and too many challenges ahead to try to return to the real world and save her parents.

Although it does not seem like it or is not noticeable, this film places a lot of emphasis on the personal growth of the character, because from the beginning we see her very fearful and distrustful of her own actions and as she advances and overcomes challenges, you can see the confidence and attitude that she is gaining on her own. It also points out in parts the greed of people and how that can blind them, without being able to see the dangers that this exposes in ourselves, as well as there are also teachings about the environment, it really has a little bit of everything and I consider that from the date until now, it has remained quite timeless, since its message continues to be applied to this day.

After saying goodbye to Zeniba and Sin Cara, Chihiro returns with Haku to the bathhouse. and on the way, Chihiro remembers that when she was a girl, she fell into a river and the name of that river is "Kohaku" so that is her real name, and that is how Haku remembers her real name and how she lost her home. Once in the bathhouse, Yubaba recovers her son and to let Chihiro and her parents go, she gives her a riddle making her guess which pigs are her parents, so she guesses correctly that her parents. of it are not there.

    My Opinion / Mi Opinión

Wow, what can I tell you about this work of art? This movie has been one of my favorites since the first time I saw it and it is the one that made me a fan of Studio Ghibli, and also of Hayao Miyazaki. I find the story very beautiful, quite original and very entertaining, the characters are also very well developed and I really love the setting of the spiritual world because I think it's very beautiful, I know that some characters are based on beliefs and creatures from folklore Japanese which also seems incredible to me because, particularly for me, it made me want to investigate and know a little more about their beliefs.

I really like the animation of the film, it has a fairly wide color palette that works perfectly, and as I told you before I really like the design of the entire spiritual world which in my opinion is so well designed that I felt like I was in there hahaha, and I also loved the design of all the characters, of which, as I told you before, many of them represent creatures from Japanese folklore and mythology, so I think this movie is an excellent way to show the beauty of its culture so that audiences from other countries and continents have the opportunity to get to know it better, which I think is excellent. My favorite character is Chihiro because although at first she proves to be a stubborn and rebellious girl, she later shows great bravery in the spiritual world to save her parents and I also find the friendship she has with Haku very cute and tender, and they love her. I confess that although the movie has been out for quite some time, I would like to see a continuation in which both meet again in the real world, and although I admit that I did not like Yubaba's character very much, it gives a great touch to the movie.

The soundtrack also seems beautiful to me because it adapts perfectly to the film and they are very beautiful songs. I tell you that Hayao Miyazaki became one of my favorite directors thanks to this film and I also like other stories of his direction such as "My Neighbor Totoro", "Kiki's Delivery Service", "Princess Momonoke" and "Howl's Moving Castle" although I never get tired of watching all the movies made by Studio Ghibli because they are all very beautiful stories. To conclude, I would say that this is a film that is worth enjoying and that deserves to be remembered because no matter how much time passes, it will always be a great film and I would like to recommend it to all those who still do not dare to see it, I promise you that They won't regret it.

  3. 'Spirited Away' by Hayao Miyazaki Review: A beautiful story on growth & accepting fear@namiks1030d

    vlcsnap-2023-09-02-19h42m52s434.png

I have fond memories of Spirited Away. I can't remember the first time I was exposed to it, one of my earliest memories must've been catching it airing one day on television. My first viewing of My Neighbor Totoro came from a viewing in the morning on a day in which I was sick, staying home from school. I would not say I am a massive Studio Ghibli fan, there are still films of theirs I am yet to see, but some of their films have managed to impact me in ways I can't believe. While my first viewing of Spirited Away came at a young age, even in my early twenties I found myself much in love with the world that is created within Spirited Away. I suffered greatly from insomnia for most of my life, incapable of holding a decent sleeping pattern and thus constantly staying up all night and sleeping all day. In order to sleep, something I still do, I would throw on a television show or film to watch to help send me off to sleep, background noise always seems to work. I had a much larger interest in the world of anime back then, having not seen a whole lot and had plenty to catch up on. Spirited Away, for a short period of time, was my go-to film to throw on that managed to very quickly send me to sleep. And I say this with great admiration for the film, rather than my sleep being a result of boredom.

Watching Spirited Away yet again, it's a film I still feel I discover something new in each time. With so many little details to be seen that I have just not noticed before. This viewing, a spontaneous choice a result of a sudden feverish illness I've been plagued with. Bound to my bed and with a hunger for cozy, gentle stories. It is interesting how a film or television show may impact us throughout our lives, unintentionally and in unique ways depending on our positions in life itself. I'm sure Spirited Away was not made to help guide a twenty-something insomniac to sleep, after all. Yet, I return to this film in various stages of my life, learning something new from it and its wide range of strange characters that each have something to tell us. Likely a lesson Miyazaki himself must've managed to learn at some point in his own life. While there are thousands of films with so much to say, animations tend to be the most vocal. Perhaps in their gentle tones and cartoonish styles. Or use of fantasy creatures to amplify their direction. I feel these are often the films that impact us the most, mostly through childhood.

Funnily, I wouldn't even classify Spirited Away as my favourite Ghibli animation, but it's one that probably return to the most.

    Spirited Away

    vlcsnap-2023-09-02-19h42m34s569.png

For me, Spirited Away's charm sits in the musical composition. A beautifully gentle orchestra and piano which sets the curiosity of a child's mind perfectly. The sense of fear, discovery, and the challenges faced within a new place. I can't think of many films in which the music is just perfect, but Spirited Away is certainly one of them. And this music starts almost immediately, with Chihiro's initial fear of moving to a new place. This is a common theme of Miyazaki, to which he explores the fear of a child's mind in youth, and the inevitable growth that comes from a series of fantasy hardships which essentially force self-discovery and growth. Chihiro, a little girl full of fear, is thrown into a mystical world of spirits after her parents are turned into pigs as a result of their greed. This fantasy world seems to unfold at night, with various spirits roaming a Taiwanese-inspired small town rich in hanging lanterns and warm market tones, narrow streets turn ripe with the movements of ghosts. For Chihiro to survive and save her parents, she had to grow and adapt to a rapidly changing environment which is full of danger, growing and gaining independence.

The way Miyazaki displays this world is utterly beautiful. Despite its threatening nature, this spirit world is full of structure. Beautiful colours and expectations with the idea of a structured city, of which takes place in a traditional bathhouse that is aimed at providing a service to the various spirits of the spirit world. The bathhouse displays a location of greed, for the most part. The worst traits of an individual can be found here. Where money, luxury, and selfishness are at the forefront of all characters. Albeit a select few which have some generous traits and are generally aware. I find the colours and tones Miyazaki uses in this place to be interesting, highly inviting, and certainly a place of comfort. The soft of place one might fall for only to end up being engulfed themselves by the poor traits of its inhabitants. A polluted hivemind that consumes and spits out like-minded individuals.

Even so, Spirited Away is full of life. The characters displayed, of which are often greater spirits, are often various creatures both real and made up. All capable of speaking the same language. Some characters are humanoid, or slightly distorted or featuring additional limbs. But for the most part the characters are some variation of animals. And it doesn't end there. The backgrounds are something you can find yourself roaming your eyes around in search of something, either very open or dense in movement. Incredibly beautiful paintings that look like a total utopian dream, or chaotic interiors in which the movements of many clog up the scene. This contrast is quite interesting, showing a contrast between the simplistic nature to be found outside, and the horrors of the modern world that we have created, claustrophobic, based on greed, and cramped. Even in such wider perspectives, there are so many small details to notice that you're likely to miss on your first view viewings. In this viewing, after all these years, I still managed to notice little things I hadn't before. And this is what art can really be about. Hand-crafted, animated worlds with so much to say.

With a runtime of two hours, you don't really notice where the time went. Spirited Away is a film in constant motion, even when the camera is still. And when the camera is not still, you're in for jaw dropping animation techniques that really show a passion for the craft. This is where Miyazaki has fairly managed to earn his reputation: no matter what, the visuals are dreamlike and inspirational. A dismissal of the computer generated guidance, a love for the idea of sitting there, painting every frame, refusing to cheapen out and minimise the work, instead, an encouragement to keep pushing for more. And all of this plays into the main theme of the film. Spirited Away is about kindness, growth, and the willpower to get out of your comfort zone for both yourself and others. The realisation that there will be danger, fears met, but also friends to be made. Discoveries of the world that seemed unknown. Ultimately saying that we are all Chihiro at some point in our lives. And no matter what we may be up against, the world is still full of adventure and greatness, which makes it all worth it in the end.

Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (called "Spirited Away" in the USA and "El Viaje de Chihiro" in Latin America) is a Japanese animated film created by Hayao Miyazaki released in 2001 in Japan. It is a very beautiful movie in my opinion which narrates the adventures of a girl in a spiritual world while she seeks to save her parents.

    image.png

    Source

The movie begins when Chihiro and her parents are on their way to another city to which they will move, the girl is upset and discouraged and the father decides to take a shortcut to save time but they only manage to stumble upon a tunnel which turns out to be quite strange. The parents decide to get out of the car and explore it although Chihiro does not want to, when crossing it they discover a village apparently abandoned at first, while the family goes through the place looking for someone to guide them, they get outdoor food stalls and stop to eat, however not finding anyone to attend them and reasoning that they have money to pay, they decide to eat the food without permission.

Chihiro decides to go away to explore and meets a mysterious young man who alerts her that she must leave before nightfall and that she must take her parents, however night falls and when she finds them it is already too late because her parents have been turned into pigs. . Frightened, the girl decides to flee from the site, however she discovers that she will not be able to do so since she discovers that the meadow through which they entered has been turned into an immense ocean and a ship is arriving, from which an endless number of gods of different shapes and sizes disembark. make Chihiro more scared.

    image.png

Chihiro discovers that her body begins to disappear, however Haku appears and feeds her food from that world so that she does not disappear, she did not have much confidence at first however she ends up giving in and eating the food, so she stops disappearing. He then takes her clandestinely to the hot spring bathhouse and explains that she must get a job until he can help her escape, so he sends her to Kamaji and tells her to ask Kamaji for a job which he refuses as he has to the susuwatari (a kind of yōkai created by Hayao Miyazaki) working for him, however he entrusts Lin, who works in the baths, to take her to Yubaba, the evil witch who owns the bathhouse. She explains to Chihiro the bath room is actually a public spa where 8 million gods come to relax and heal, Yubaba tries to kick Chihiro out but thanks to her persistence she ends up giving him a job. Yubaba forces her to sign a contract in which she steals her name and renames it Sen.

    image.png

    Source

Then Haku appears who, upon receiving orders from Yubaba, acts cold and cruel, and apparently without recognizing Sen, takes her to where Lin is so that she can teach him how to work. The next morning Sen is reunited with Haku who now acts friendly and takes her to see her parents, Haku gives her her clothes and there she finds an old letter addressed to Chihiro, then she realizes that she almost forgot her own name. Haku warns him that he shouldn't forget his own name since Yubaba controls people by stealing his name and if she forgets it completely he won't be able to leave the spirit world. Before returning Haku gives food to Chihiro.

When Sen confronts Sin Cara, he has not only grown a lot and has become obsessed with her, he also tries to tempt her with gold but she is not interested, but decides to give her the herb cake which causes Sin Cara to start chasing her around. the spa vomiting up the workers that he had eaten, once he regains his normal size he also regains his calm and collected personality, so he accompanies Sen to see Yubaba's twin sister named Zeniba, in turn Yubaba sends to assassinate Chihiro's parents but Haku manages to avoid it by reaching an agreement with Yubaba.

Once they arrive at Zeniba's house, Sen gives her a seal that Haku had stolen for Yubaba and apologizes on her behalf, she realizes that Zeniba was actually a very kind woman and tells her that the curse she had cast on Boh and Yubaba's bird had long since lost their effect yet they refused to change. Zeniba also tells Sen that the slug she had stepped on was used by Yubaba to control Haku, however her love for him had broken that spell. I tell you that the part where Sen steps on the slug made me laugh a lot since the way the Kamaji workers make a disgusted face. The next morning Haku arrives to look for her, however, the Faceless One stays as Zeniba's assistant, leaving only Chihiro, Boh and the bird.

On the way Chihiro talks to Haku and tells him that she remembered falling into a river when she was younger and was pulled out by someone whom she now recognizes as Haku, revealing to Haku also her real name Nigihayami Kohakunushi, then he remembers that she had left homeless when the humans dried up their river to build on it, I must admit that this scene moved me a lot as well as the scene in which Haku comes looking for her and she sees him fully recovered and runs to hug him. Once they reach the Boh bathhouse and the bird returns to its true forms, Yubaba puts Chihiro a riddle to free her if she guesses right. She tells him that if she manages to recognize her parents she will finally give up and let them go, Chihiro is correct in saying that her parents were not there causing Yubaba to finally accept her defeat and release them. Haku takes Chihiro back to the meadow since the river that was there had already dried up and Chihiro says goodbye to Haku, making him promise that they will see each other again.

When Chihiro reunites with her parents who don't seem to remember anything they come out of the tunnel, and when they get outside they are amazed to see that their car is covered with plants making it look like a little time has passed, the movie ends with Chihiro and her family driving away in their car.

Wow, what can I tell you? Thanks to this movie I became a fan of Studio Ghibli since this is the first I saw from this studio, it is one of my favorite animated films and I never get tired of seeing it. The characters are very well developed and the setting of the spiritual world is very beautiful, I know that some characters are based on beliefs and creatures from Japanese folklore but the story is really very beautiful.

I really liked the character of Chihiro, she showed great courage and strength to free her parents and her friendship with Haku is also super tender since it really seems that they have known each other all their lives (in fact Haku reveals that he knows her since I was little, and there are other characters like Lin, Kamaji and other creatures.Although I don't like the character of the witch Yubaba very much, I admit that it gives a good touch to the movie.

I also find the soundtrack beautiful since the songs fit perfectly, Hayao Miyazaki became one of my favorites since I also like other stories like "My Neighbor Totoro", "Princess Momonoke" and "Howl's Moving Castle" although I never get tired of seeing all the movies made by Studio Ghibli since they are very beautiful stories, I would dare to say that Miyazaki deserved more than once to have won an Oscar for best animated film more than once however, I am very happy that he won that category with this movie. I recommend them to all those who still don't dare to see it, I promise you won't regret it.
