Bitch X Rich is one of those Korean school dramas that do takes the usual rich versus poor setup and adds a murder mystery on top, and somehow it actually works, this is a story that follows Kim Hye-in, a girl from a poor background, the type of student who has to fight for every single opportunity while her classmates are out here living lives she can only imagine, her whole world flips upside down after she witnesses something horrifying, a student getting pushed off the rooftop at a prestigious school, now, in most dramas, being a witness to something like that would just mean trouble, statements, police involvement, the usual....
But this show takes it in a completely different direction. Instead of just reporting what she saw, Hye-in ends up being offered a full scholarship to Cheongdam International High School, this elite institution built for the seriously wealthy, basically as a way to keep her quiet.
Picture this, a girl who has never had access to that kind of privilege suddenly finds herself walking the halls of a school where everybody around her comes from money she can not even fathom that alone would be enough tension for an entire series, adjusting to a world that was never built for people like her, but then she meets Baek Jena, and this is where things get really interesting, Jena is not just some random rich mean girl, she is a full chaebol heiress, the most powerful and feared student at the entire school.... and guess what, she also happens to be the prime suspect in the exact murder Hye-in witnessed.
So now you have these two girls, from completely opposite worlds, forced into each others orbit because of one horrifying secret that is hanging between them, and what follows is basically, a slow burning psychological war, the kind where nobody is fighting with their fists, they are fighting with information, manipulation, blackmail, shifting loyalties, all while trying to figure out who they can actually trust in a school built entirely on status and image, Hye-in has to walk this tightrope of trying to hold onto her scholarship, trying to survive socially in a place that clearly does not want her there at ll, all while quietly chasing the truth about what really happened on that rooftop, meanwhile, Jena is dealing with her own pressure, trying to protect her reputation and her family name while this poor scholarship girl keeps getting closer and closer to something she would rather keep buried...
And just when you think you have settled into the rhythm of their rivalry, season two then throws in a whole new death, then, also shaking up the already fragile hierarchy, at the school all over again, new characters get introduced, old loyalties get tested, and the power dynamics between Hye-in and Jena keep shifting in ways that keep you on your toes...
What I find compelling about this whole setup is how it uses the murder mystery as a lens to examine something much bigger, this idea of class division and how money can literally decide who gets protected and who gets sacrificed, Hye-in is not just fighting to prove her innocence or find a killer, she is fighting an entire system that was built to keep girls like her in their place, silent and grateful for whatever scraps of opportunity they are handed, this is definitely not your typical school drama.
