This film is from last year, but it was as of this year that I was able to see it and I have to admit that I place it on my list of best films of 2021. It is a British production that has been very successful in its country, but on this side of the world (America) it seems that few have seen it. That's why I want to make this review opinion, many of the readers know that this kind of movies are my favorites and I hope to convince you to see this fantastic film.
Esta película es del año pasado, pero fue a partir de este año que pude verla y tengo que reconocer que la coloco en mi lista de mejores películas del 2021. Es una producción británica que ha tenido mucho éxito en su país, pero en este lado del mundo (América) parece que pocos la han visto. Por eso quiero hacerles esta reseña opinión, muchos de los lectores saben que este tipo de películas son mis favoritas y espero convencerlos de ver esta fantástica película.

Let's get some context about this film, which is the feature version of a short film that was very well received at festivals in 2019. Actor and filmmaker Philip Barantini, was already working on the production of the film, when two years ago I reviewed another of his films: Villain. A crime thriller that left me with good impressions of the director and in that post, which you can read in this link, I already reported that you had to be attentive to see Boiling Point.
Philip Barantini chose the same cast that participated in the short film, headed by the great Stephen Graham, who is immense in his character, accompanied by little known actors who give great performances. But more about them later.
The filmmaker knows in great detail the world in which his story takes place, since Barntini, before being an actor and then directing, worked for 15 years of his life in the kitchens of different restaurants, many of those years he was the chef, therefore, it is a very personal story that he wanted to tell us, so that we see the dark side of the culinary world.
The world of the chef, of haute cuisine, of luxury restaurants, of the specialists who review the restaurants, of the whole team that makes up a kitchen, from the lowest employee, to the big star, the chef, captured in a real way and filmed in a masterful sequence shot, which will put us inside the heat of that world, full of tension, making this film, a delicious dish to taste in one sitting.

Pongámonos en contexto sobre esta película, que es la versión en largometraje de un cortometraje que tuvo muy buena acogida en festivales en el año 2019. El actor y cineasta Philip Barantini, ya estaba trabajando en la producción de la película, cuando hace dos años reseñé otra de sus películas: Villain. Un thriller criminal que me dejó buenas impresiones del director y en aquel post, que puedes leer en este link, ya informaba de que había que estar atentos para ver Boiling Point.
Philip Barantini eligió el mismo reparto que participó en el cortometraje, encabezado por el gran Stephen Graham, que está inmenso en su personaje, acompañado de actores poco conocidos que hacen grandes interpretaciones. Pero más adelante hablaremos de ellos.
El cineasta conoce con mucho detalle el mundo en el que se desarrolla su historia, ya que Barntini, antes de ser actor y luego dirigir, trabajó durante 15 años de su vida en las cocinas de diferentes restaurantes, muchos de esos años fue el chef, por lo tanto, es una historia muy personal la que ha querido contarnos, para que veamos el lado oscuro del mundo culinario.

What is the plot of Boiling Point?
Andy Jones is a distinguished chef at an upscale restaurant. His personal life is a mess, he is separated, he has to communicate with his son who is about to have a birthday, he has financial difficulties, he is addicted to alcohol and other substances and the night seems to be fatal, the restaurant is full, his former boss will come accompanied by a famous food critic and he must deal with all the problems that arise that night that escalate until it will be impossible to control. How can Andy cope with the extreme pressure, you thought being a chef was easy?
Opinion
I think in the last decade television shows about cooking, where chefs are the main characters, have become very popular and are often portrayed as agitated, prone to shouting and very strict. Maybe there is a small part of reality in that role-playing we see on TV shows, but I also think the image is distorted, making people believe that if you become a chef you will have a luxurious life, you will be famous and loved by people.
Programs like Masterchef, in any of the countries that produce the franchise, insist on placing the figure of the chefs who act as judges, as highly successful people who seem to have no problems. Yes, they may make a lot of money, but only for being part of the TV show, because they are productions that generate a lot of money. But that doesn't mean that all chefs will reach that level of fame, life is not a TV show.
Already in the past, the late Anthony Bourdain, a chef who achieved worldwide fame thanks to television and who sadly committed suicide in 2018, had left written works (books and articles in prestigious newspapers) about the dark side of working in the big kitchens of famed restaurants. Not only because of the malpractices that we diners are unaware of, but because of the emotional toll it takes on many people working in that industry. Creo que en la última década se han hecho muy populares los programas de televisión sobre la cocina, en los que los chefs son los protagonistas, y a menudo se les retrata como seres agitados, propensos a gritar y muy estrictos. Quizá haya una pequeña parte de realidad en ese juego de roles que vemos en los programas de televisión, pero también creo que la imagen está distorsionada, haciendo creer a la gente que si te conviertes en chef tendrás una vida lujosa, serás famoso y querido por la gente.
Programas como Masterchef, en cualquiera de los países que producen la franquicia, insisten en colocar la figura de los chefs que hacen de jueces, como personas de gran éxito y que parecen no tener ningún problema. Sí, puede que ganen mucho dinero, pero sólo por formar parte del programa de televisión, porque son producciones que generan mucho dinero. Pero eso no significa que todos los chefs vayan a alcanzar ese nivel de fama, la vida no es un programa de televisión.

Hell's Kitchen
That's the name of a popular reality show featuring chef Gordon Ramsay. I don't know if it is still being broadcasted, I stopped watching it some time ago, I admit it was fun, but there came a time when I got tired of watching it. It's a reality show, where everything is prepared, with a script and it's a show of fights and gossip among the participants, in reality the operation of a kitchen is the least important thing.
If you want to see a real approach to a hellish kitchen, you must see Boiling Point, where only one night is enough for everything to happen and we know the whole framework that occurs in the hidden face of a restaurant, that place where the magic is done to create fantastic dishes that we will enjoy at the table, but inside, everyone is working and facing a storm of calamities, professional and personal, where the director masterfully introduces us, so that we feel the heat of the kitchen.
The experience is incredibly exciting, raising the tension in every scene, from the moment Andy enters his workplace, the atmosphere heats up until everything goes to hell.
A multicultural mix of characters, as a sample of the variety of our society, who will live the most difficult night of their work. Where problems accumulate making many of them lose control, and what a way to lose control! If you let yourself be absorbed by the story, I think you will end up exhausted, from all the emotions that the film makes us experience.

Ese es el nombre de un popular reality show con la figura del chef Gordon Ramsay. No sé si se sigue emitiendo, yo dejé de verlo hace tiempo, reconozco que era divertido, pero llegó un momento en que me cansé de verlo. Es un reality show, donde todo está preparado, con un guión y es un espectáculo de peleas y cotilleos entre los participantes, en realidad el funcionamiento de una cocina es lo menos importante.
Si quieres ver una aproximación real a una cocina infernal, debes ver Boiling Point, donde sólo una noche es suficiente para que todo ocurra y conozcamos todo el entramado que ocurre en la cara oculta de un restaurant, ese lugar donde se hace la magia para crear fantásticos platos que disfrutaremos en la mesa, pero adentro, todos están trabajando y enfrentándose a una tormenta de calamidades, profesionales y personales, donde el realizador nos introduce magistralmente, para que sintamos el calor de la cocina.
La experiencia es increíblemente emocionante, elevando la tensión en cada escena, desde el momento en que Andy entra en su lugar de trabajo, el ambiente se calienta hasta que todo se va al infierno.
Una mezcla de personajes multicultural, como muestra de la variedad de nuestra sociedad, que vivirán la noche más difícil de su trabajo. Donde los problemas se acumulan haciendo que muchos de ellos pierdan el control, y ¡qué manera de perder el control! Microcosmos
Another reason why I love cinema, the film uses the microcosm of a kitchen to show a reality that goes beyond the world in which the story takes place. A single location, a restaurant, crowded with customers and the workers of the premises, serves to show the problems and behaviors of our current society.
In this small universe created by the filmmaker, it is enough to deal with drug addictions, separation problems, labor exploitation, the artificial world of social networks, the dangers of making a mistake that can cost someone's life, blackmail, manipulation and even the prevailing racism in society. Yes, just as you read it, with a character waiting tables and sequences that make us uncomfortable, but that show us a reality that sometimes we don't want to see.
Herein lies the genius of this film, using a microcosm to portray an entire society is a difficult task, but director Philip Barantini himself and with the help of James Cummings put together a solid script. Of course, they had already made the 20-minute short 3 years ago.
Sequence shot
Add to all of the above that it was all done with a single sequence shot, and my mind exploded with satisfaction. I love sequence shots and in this film we are really talking about a great sequence shot. Some time ago I did a post explaining what a sequence shot is and my experience making a short film, where I tried to make a sequence shot of a few minutes. It's not easy at all, the level of synchronization has to be perfect.
Is there a trick to the sequence shot in the film? When I finished watching it, I went back through the whole film, fast-forwarding and stopping, and there was really only one moment where it could have been used to trick the shot. But it's very well executed and it really feels like the cast rehearsed for weeks, every day, until they proceeded to shoot, as if it were a play where all the characters had to be in the right place at the right time for everything to be shot in sequence.
I give them a standing ovation. It was a great job and it was flawless, seamless. Even if the whole film is a sequence shot, it is justified, because this resource helps to maintain the tension throughout the film, until the apocalypse knocks on the doors of that microcosm.
Microcosmos
Otra de las razones por las que me gusta el cine, la película utiliza el microcosmos de una cocina para mostrar una realidad que va más allá del mundo en el que se desarrolla la historia. Una única localización, un restaurante, abarrotado de clientes y de los trabajadores del local, sirve para mostrar los problemas y comportamientos de nuestra sociedad actual.
En este pequeño universo creado por el cineasta, basta con tratar las drogodependencias, los problemas de separación, la explotación laboral, el mundo artificial de las redes sociales, los peligros de cometer un error que puede costar la vida a alguien, el chantaje, la manipulación e incluso el racismo imperante en la sociedad. Sí, así como lo lees, con un personaje sirviendo mesas y secuencias que incomodan, pero que nos muestran una realidad que a veces no queremos ver.
Aquí radica la genialidad de esta película, utilizar un microcosmos para retratar a toda una sociedad es una tarea difícil, pero el mismo director Philip Barantini y con la ayuda de James Cummings armaron un guión sólido. Por supuesto, ya habían realizado el corto de 20 minutos hace 3 años.
Plano secuencia
Si a todo lo anterior le añadimos que todo se hizo con un único plano secuencia, mi mente explotó de satisfacción. Me encantan los planos secuencia y en esta película estamos hablando realmente de un gran plano secuencia. Hace tiempo hice un post explicando lo que es un plano secuencia y mi experiencia haciendo un cortometraje, donde intenté hacer un plano secuencia de pocos minutos. No es nada fácil, el nivel de sincronización tiene que ser perfecto.
¿Hay algún truco en el plano secuencia de la película? Cuando terminé de verla, volví a repasar toda la película, adelantando y parando, y realmente sólo hubo un momento en el que se podría haber utilizado para trucar el plano. Pero está muy bien ejecutado y realmente parece que el reparto ensayo durante semanas, todos los días, hasta proceder al rodaje, como si se tratara de una obra de teatro en la que todos los personajes tenían que estar en el lugar adecuado en el momento adecuado para que todo se rodara en secuencia.
Les aplaudo de pie. Fue un gran trabajo y fue perfecto, no tiene fisuras. Aunque toda la película sea un plano secuencia, está justificado, porque este recurso ayuda a mantener la tensión durante toda la película, hasta que el apocalipsis llama a las puertas de ese microcosmos.
Cast
Stephen Graham, an actor of incredible caliber and quality, is the best known name in the cast. If you have read any of my old reviews of movies or series in which this actor has worked, you know that I have him among the greats of today. He is an actor who really gets into each of his characters and this time it's his turn to play the Chef who is going through personal and professional problems, finding himself on the edge of the precipice. Soon we will see the actor in the last season of Peaky Blinders and if you have never seen the work of this actor, I invite you to randomly select any of his work, you will not regret it.
But this is not the work of one man, each of the actors, even the one playing a Latino immigrant with little dialogue, are perfect in the role they play in the story. I loved the work of actress Vinette Robinson who plays Carly, the sous-chef who is always willing to help Andy, with a strong character, she will have a magnificent acting duel with actress Alice Feetham, in a scene to remember.
Lauryn Ajufo, Malachi Kirby, Izuka Hoyle, Aine Rode Daly are other lesser known actors, but who have the talent to make each of their characters believable. The other actor known for his background is Jason Flemyng who plays Alistair, Andy's former partner and boss, who will go to the restaurant with the culinary critic to evaluate the chef's food, serving as Andy's antagonist in the story.
Reparto
Stephen Graham, un actor de increíble nivel y calidad, es el nombre más conocido del reparto. Es un actor que se mete de lleno en cada uno de sus personajes y esta vez le toca interpretar al Chef que pasa por problemas personales y profesionales, encontrándose al borde del precipicio. Pronto veremos al actor en la última temporada de Peaky Blinders y si nunca has visto el trabajo de este actor, te invito a que selecciones al azar cualquiera de sus trabajos, no te arrepentirás.
Pero este no es el trabajo de un solo hombre, cada uno de los actores, incluso el que interpreta a un inmigrante latino con poco diálogo, estan perfectos en el papel que desempeñan en la historia. Me encantó el trabajo de la actriz Vinette Robinson que interpreta a Carly, la sous-chef que siempre está dispuesta a ayudar a Andy, con un fuerte carácter, tendrá un magnífico duelo interpretativo con la actriz Alice Feetham, en una escena para recordar.
