A few weeks ago we had nothing to watch, so I checked my "plan 2 watch" list. The conditions are simple - it should be at least a good show and have several seasons. I found Bosch on the list, which was recommended to me many times. I asked my partner if she wanted to watch it, she replied that we would check out episode 1. As for me, I still don't like police series, but I've gotten used to them and if it's good, I'll watch it with pleasure. And this one is damn good!
I won't talk too much about the plot because it is quite standard. A similar case to battle shounen in anime - watch a few of them and the rest you will see almost the same threads, character archetypes or plot patterns. Police series take place in our world, so there is no question of assessing the created world, the rules that prevail in it, the consequences of following them, etc. However, just because it's pretty standard doesn't mean it's bad, boring, uninteresting or anything like that. It seems to me that Bosch's script is one of the better ones. This is due to several factors. We got a really good and original plot of the main character, which intertwines with the main case. In each season, we have one big case and a couple of side ones, thanks to which the protagonist discovers further secrets from his past. The side characters have equally good plots, thanks to which the series is not boring even for a moment. I say this in this context (as in House of Cards, Boardwalk Empire, Rome and other very good productions) that there are practically no fillers that are only intended to mask laziness or lack of ideas for a given episode or stage of the story. Yes Dragon Ball Daima, I'm looking in your direction. Apart from a few weaker episodes, the series has maintained a high level for several seasons. We stopped at 4 or 5, but from what I've heard, he holds the level until the very end.
However, the icing on the cake is the main character. Already while watching the 1st season, I told my girlfriend that this series was written especially for this actor, his features, attitude and character. I didn't know Titus Welliver before, and thanks to Bosch I certainly won't forget him. It's clear from IMDB that he has experience in this type or similar roles. I wasn't even surprised that he once played Lex Luthor - during one episode, I thought he would be perfect for this role. You can feel natural indifference from him. It's also clear that he can analyze. It may sound funny, because after all, all people think, but I rarely see it in movies or TV series. I saw it with Keaton in Spiderman, Michael Jordan's mother in Ben Affleck's film (I recommend it, great production, Viola Davis was brilliant as Jordan's mother!), I saw it with Bosch. This is a very important feature in a talented detective. It is often the case that extraordinary individuals need space to act and the favor of the "top" because they operate on the border of the law or beyond it. Or should I say, pretending not to see something and looking in a different direction. Just like Captain America sometimes does in the comics, when Marvel heroes hit something special. Cap then sometimes outsources the dirty work to Wolverine or the Punisher.
I love Bosch for his insightful and open mind. The guy is a bit from a different era, like the hero Tulsa King, but like Stallone, he is great at reading people. He may not understand certain things, he may miss current fashion or trends, but his intuition rarely deceives him. Although he sometimes overreacts and overreacts, at the end of the day, his methods turn out to be justified and effective. Just as I was bored during several episodes, I never once complained about the inconsistency in his behavior. It doesn't matter if he's angry, sad, desperate or happy, he's genuine every time. His relationship with his wife and daughter is equally true. Bosch's wife is also an extraordinary individual, she profiles people for the American secret services. As is unfortunately often the case, two strong and independent individuals cannot live together, even pretending to be a normal family. Someone in such a relationship must at least partially submit to the other party. If they cannot, they usually break up or stop functioning, even pretending to be a normal family. Fortunately, my daughter inherited her parents' tough nature, so it doesn't cause her such pain. Well, at least he doesn't usually show it. Her relationship with her mom (Elenaor) and dad, especially Bosch, is great and natural. The same in the case of the former husband and wife - you can see that there is still love between them. Excellent job in terms of casting and developing this story over several seasons. Just as it is often seen, more or less, that the concept of certain threads/characters changes between seasons (or elements are added that were not there before, or those more or less forgotten are developed), in the case of Bosch I have the impression that Prime accepted the script several seasons in advance, and the creators are calmly implementing it.
My second favorite actor is the late Lance Reddick. I liked him from the beginning because he has the same aura as Bosch - an authentic, tough, uncompromising man with a good head on his shoulders. Despite the similarities, Irvin Irving is different from him. If only for the reason that he is the police chief and cannot afford to do certain things, at least acting openly. I say this because he showed in several episodes that he can also act in an illegal but wise way (I don't want to talk about details, because these are two quite important threads). These episodes aside, Irvin is a tough guy who manages to keep Bosch, who sometimes acts like an aggressive dog, in check.
I don't usually watch this type of series, especially when the policeman has a partner. Somehow it turned out that each of them bored me. For some reason, it's hard to say what, I was afraid of this thread at the beginning. I quickly changed my mind, and subsequent seasons confirmed my opinion even more. I don't want to use strong words, but I don't think I've ever seen such a well-written professional relationship. Bosch and Edgar trust each other, but are aware of their flaws. Especially in the case of Edgar. I don't want to spoil anything, but the plot about the partial loss of trust was presented really well and in a real way. We don't get an answer right away, we observe the action from different perspectives, and different characters throw various "plot crumbs" that influence our judgment of the situation. You can see how the characters react to them with anger and doubt, and begin to suspect each other of betrayal. Especially Jamie Hector, i.e. Edgar, for whom this is an extremely difficult matter. Due to being Bosch's partner, he knows a lot about the controversial issue, and at the same time he is like a brother to him. If you have had a difficult episode of this type with a family member or close friend, you know how difficult it is. Phew, somehow I managed to get through this without revealing too much of the script. Either way, Jamie Hector's skills convinced me to give The Wire a second chance. From what I've read, he plays the role of a drug lord there. It will be nice to see him on the other side of the barricade.
All the characters were written as people, not wax figures. They have their advantages and disadvantages, which are often mixed and interpenetrate. Our dark side, which we like to hide, and our positive side, which we like to expose. As I said, this is unfortunately a normal occurrence in this job. Prime's series shows very well how several years of service can change priorities in one's mind. Or how tempting large wads of dollars can be, thanks to which police officers magically suffer from amnesia. Well, apart from Bosch, he doesn't give a damn about bribes, what anyone thinks of him, and he's been through too much shit in his life, so he knows its stench too well. At least as long as he doesn't face serious consequences. Then he can temporarily refrain or make concessions. The less serious ones are no longer important, because a Hollywood detective deals with them almost every day. My girlfriend is also delighted with the series, especially Bosch. Sometimes I felt a little jealous seeing her look at him with buttery eyes, he he. All kidding aside, the few times we talked about the show, she agreed with most of the things I included in this review.
To sum up, if you are looking for a very good and long series with a consistent vision, direction, script and characters, you have already found it. I don't think I know of any other series that has maintained a level playing field for so many episodes. There is a lot of good humor of various types (men's, heavy jokes, funny relationships with daughter, wife and lovers and more), the episodes are like water and we want to watch them one by one. My partner would complain when we had to go to bed, wanting to watch "one more episode". Well, Asia really liked the main character and judging by her reaction, I can also recommend this series to women. I haven't mentioned it very often in this text, but there are also interesting threads for women, which we discussed several times during or after the session. My Bosch rating is 9/10.

Nie będę zbyt dużo opowiadał o fabule, bo ta jest dość standardowa. Podobny przypadek, co battle shouneny w anime - obejrzyjcie kilka z nich, a w reszcie zobaczycie niemal te same wątki, archetypy postaci lub schematy fabularne. Seriale policyjne dzieją się w naszym świecie, więc odpada kwestia oceny stworzonego świata, zasad jakie w nim panują, konsekwencja ich przestrzegania etc. Jednakże to, że jest dość standardowa, nie oznacza że jest słabo, nudno, nieciekawie czy coś w tym stylu. Wydaje mi się, że scenariusz Boscha należy do grupy tych lepszych. Wynika to z kilku czynników. Dostaliśmy naprawdę dobry i oryginalny wątek głównego bohatera, który przenika się z główną sprawą. W każdym sezonie mamy jedną, dużą sprawę, parę pobocznych, dzięki którym protagonista odkrywa kolejne tajemnice ze swojej przeszłości. Poboczni bohaterowie mają równie dobre wątki, dzięki czemu serial nie jest nudny nawet przez chwilę. Mówię to w tym kontekście (podobnie jak w House of Cards, Boardwalk Empire, Rome i innych bardzo dobrych produkcjach), że praktycznie nie ma wypełniaczy, które mają jedynie zamaskować lenistwo lub brak pomysłów na dany odcinek lub etap historii. Tak Dragon Ball Daima, patrzę w twoim kierunku. Pomijając kilka słabszych odcinków, serial trzyma wysoki poziom przez kilka sezonów. Przerwaliśmy na 4 lub 5, ale z tego co słyszałem, trzyma poziom do samego końca.
Wisienką na torcie jest jednak główny bohater. Już w trakcie oglądania 1 sezonu, powiedziałem do swojej dziewczyny, że ten serial został napisany specjalnie pod tego aktora, jego cechy, postawę i charakter. Nie znałem wcześniej Titusa Wellivera, a dzięki Bosch z pewnością o nim nie zapomnę. Widać po IMDB, że ma doświadczenie w tego typu lub podobnych rolach. Nawet nie byłem zdziwiony, że kiedyś wcielił się w Lexa Luthora - podczas któregoś odcinka, pomyślałem że nadawałby się do tej roli. Czuć od niego naturalną obojętność. Widać też że potrafi analizować. Może to brzmi śmieszne, bo w końcu wszyscy ludzie myślą, ale rzadko to widzę w filmach, czy serialach. Widziałem to u Keatona w Spiderman, matce Michaela Jordana w filmie Bena Afflecka (polecam, świetna produkcja, Viola Davis w roli matki Jordana wypadła genialnie!), widzę to u Boscha. To bardzo ważna cecha u utalentowanego detektywa. Często jest tak, że nieprzeciętne jednostki potrzebują przestrzeni do działania i przychylności "góry", gdyż działają na granicy prawa lub poza nią. Czy raczej powinienem powiedzieć, udawania że się czegoś nie widzi i patrzenia w innym kierunku. Tak jak to czasem robi w komiksach Captain America, gdy bohaterowie Marvela trafią na wyjątkową szuję. Cap wtedy czasem zleca brudną robotę Wolverineowi lub Punisherowi.
Uwielbiam Boscha za jego przenikliwy i otwarty umysł. Facet jest trochę z innej epoki, jak bohater Tulsa King, ale podobnie jak Stallone, potrafi świetnie czytać ludzi. Może nie rozumieć pewnych rzeczy, może mu umykać aktualna moda lub trendy, ale przeczucie rzadko kiedy go myli. Choć zdarza mu się przesadzić i zareagować zbyt mocno, to na koniec dnia, jego metody okazują się być zasadne i skuteczne. Tak jak nudziłem się podczas kilku odcinków, tak ani razu nie narzekałem na niespójność w jego zachowaniu. Nie ważne czy rozgniewany, smutny, zrozpaczony, uradowany, za każdym razem jest autentyczny. Tak samo prawdziwa jest jego relacja z żoną i córką. Żona Boscha również jest nieprzeciętną jednostką, zajmuje się profilowaniem ludzi dla Amerykańskich służb specjalnych. Jak to niestety często bywa, dwie silne i niezależne jednostki nie umieją żyć razem, chociażby udając w miarę normalną rodzinę. Ktoś w takiej relacji musi się przynajmniej częściowo podporządkować drugiej stronie. Jeśli nie mogą, to zazwyczaj rozstają się lub przestają funkcjonować, chociażby udając normalną rodzinę. Córka na szczęście odziedziczyła twardy charakter po rodzicach, więc nie sprawia jej to takiego bólu. No, przynajmniej zazwyczaj tego nie okazuje. Jej relacje z mamą (Elenaor) i tatą, zwłaszcza Boschem, są świetne i naturalne. Tak samo w przypadku dawnego męża i żony - widać że ciągle tli się między nimi uczucie. Doskonała robota pod względem castingu i rozwijania tej historii na przestrzeni kilku sezonów. Tak jak często widać, mniej lub bardziej, że pomiędzy sezonami zmienia się koncepcja na pewne wątki / postacie (lub dodaje się elementy, których wcześniej nie było, ewentualnie rozwija się te mniej lub bardziej zapomniane), tak w przypadku Boscha mam wrażenie, jakby Prime zaakceptował scenariusz na kilka sezonów do przodu, a twórcy spokojnie go realizują.
Moim drugim ulubionym aktorem, jest już nieżyjący Lance Reddick. Polubiłem go od początku, bo bije od niego taka sama aura, co od Boscha - autentycznego, twardego, bezkompromisowego mężczyzny z głową na karku. Mimo podobieństw, Irvin Irving różni się jednak od niego. Choćby z tego powodu, że jest szefem policji i nie może sobie pozwolić na pewne rzeczy, przynajmniej działając w otwarty sposób. Mówię tak, bo pokazał w kilku odcinkach, że może też działać w nielegalny, ale mądry sposób (nie chcę mówić o szczegółach, bo to dwa dość istotne wątki). Pomijając te epizody, Irvin jest twardzielem potrafiącym utrzymać w ryzach Boscha, który czasami zachowuje się jak agresywny pies.
Zwykle nie oglądam tego typu seriali, zwłaszcza gdy policjant ma partnera. Jakoś tak wyszło, że każdy z nich nudził mnie. Z jakiegoś powodu, trudno powiedzieć jakiego, obawiałem się tego wątku na początku. Szybko zmieniłem zdanie, a kolejne sezony jeszcze bardziej utwierdziły mnie w tej opinii. Nie chcę rzucać mocnymi hasłami, ale chyba nigdy nie widziałem tak dobrze napisanej partnerskiej relacji ws. zawodowych. Bosch i Edgar ufają sobie, ale zdają sobie sprawę ze swoich wad. Zwłaszcza w przypadku Edgara. Nie chcę spoilerować, ale wątek dotyczący częściowej utraty zaufania został przedstawiony naprawdę dobrze i w życiowy sposób. Nie dostajemy odpowiedzi odrazu, obserwujemy akcję z różnych perspektyw, a różne postacie rzucają różnymi "fabularnymi okruszkami", które wpływają na nasz osąd sytuacji. Widać, jak bohaterowie reagują na nie gniewem, zwątpieniem, zaczynają podejrzewać siebie o zdradę. Zwłaszcza Jamie Hector, czyli Edgar, dla którego to wyjątkowo trudna sprawa. Z racji bycia partnerem Boscha, wie bardzo wiele na temat kontrowersyjnej sprawy, a jednocześnie jest dla niego niczym brat. Jeżeli mieliście trudny epizod tego typu z kimś z rodziny, czy bliskim przyjacielem, to wiecie jak trudne to jest. Uff, jakoś zdołałem wybrnąć z tego bez nadmiernego zdradzania wątków scenariusza. Tak czy siak, umiejętności Jamiego Hectora przekonały mnie do tego, by dać drugą szansę serialowi The Wire. Z tego co czytałem, wciela się tam w rolę bossa narkotykowego. Fajnie będzie go zobaczyć po drugiej stronie barykady.
Wszystkie postacie zostały napisane jak ludzie, a nie figury woskowe. Posiadają swoje wady i zalety, które są często wymieszane i wzajemnie przenikają się. Swoją mroczną, którą lubimy ukrywać i pozytywną, którą lubimy eksponować, stronę. Jak już mówiłem, to niestety normalne zjawisko w tej pracy. Serial Prime'a bardzo dobrze pokazuje, jak kilkuletnia służba potrafi pozmieniać priorytety w głowie. Albo jak kuszące potrafią być duże pliki z dolarami, dzięki którym policjanci magicznie chorują na amnezję. No poza Boschem, on ma głęboko w dupie łapówki, co kto o nim myśli i przeżył zbyt dużo gówna w swoim życiu, więc zbyt dobrze zna jego smród. Przynajmniej tak długo, jak nie grożą mu z tego powodu poważne konsekwencje. Wtedy potrafi się tymczasowo powstrzymać lub pójść na ustępstwa. Te mniej poważne już nie są istotne, bo detektyw z Hollywood ma z nimi styczność niemal codziennie. Moja dziewczyna również jest zachwycona serialem, a zwłaszcza Boschem. Czasami czułem się lekko zazdrosny, widząc jak patrzy na niego maślanymi oczami, he he. Odstawiając żarty na bok, jak kilka razy rozmawialiśmy o serialu, to zgodziła się z większością rzeczy, które zamieściłem w tej recenzji.
Reasumując, jeżeli szukacie bardzo dobrego i długiego serialu z konsekwentną wizją, reżyserią, scenariuszem i postaciami, to już go znaleźliście. Wydaje mi się, że nie znam drugiego serialu, który utrzymywałby równy poziom przez tyle odcinków. Jest dużo dobrego humoru różnego typu (męskie, ciężkie żarty, zabawne relacje z córką, żoną i kochankami i nie tylko), odcinki wchodzą jak woda i chcemy je oglądać jeden po drugim. Moja partnerka marudziła, gdy musieliśmy iść spać, chcąc obejrzeć "jeszcze jeden odcinek". No właśnie, Asia bardzo polubiła głównego bohatera i wnioskując po jej reakcji, mogę polecić ten serial również kobietom. Nie wspominałem o tym zbyt często w tym tekście, ale są tu też ciekawe wątki dla kobiet, o których kilkukrotnie dyskutowaliśmy w trakcie lub po seansie. Moja ocena Bosch, to 9/10.
