The Regni and the Cantii have been at war for many years. Both clans, faithful to the designs of the gods in the name of the great Druid Veran, have obeyed to the letter all the wills that this messenger has whispered in their ears. The battles have been bloody, and the truces are far from being realized. But one day from the sea an iron threat arises that quickly takes on a game on a wild and disunited island. The Romans emerge to impose their dominions and subdue the clans. In this tangle of swords, blood and betrayals there is a drop of hope: a girl who, in the hands of the right teacher, could become the salvation of Britannia. But for this to happen, this young girl will first have to face many trials, including knowing the true value of sacrifice.
Britannia, the ancient domain of the Romans, comes to life in a television series with wild, grotesque and somewhat magical touches. The focus of this story revolves around two dynastic families, a mystical clan and a legion of Romans who wish to continue expanding their vast empire. It is a historical drama with a rich setting, somewhat similar to other works such as Game Of Thrones. The first lines of the plot lead us to meet Kerra, a redhead from the Cantii clan who, like any girl unable to submit, fights for her father to put aside the traditions of idolaters and concentrate on true art from the war. As if that were not enough, she has a cowardly brother, and worst of all is that they both compete for the succession of the crown, which is not chosen by the king but a somewhat strange druid named Veran disque by order of the gods.

Despite the small similarities, this television series created by Jez Butterworth, Tom Butterworth, James Richardson for Sky and Amazon Prime Video has its own virtues. Perhaps the dramatic premise is not so brilliant, and perhaps there is a lot of savagery in the way of telling the facts, but even so it is worth enjoying especially because it is a bit crude if not to say and visceral. In Britannia, war takes on a meaning beyond the conquest of a territory, because what really seems to matter is the twisted power, the same one that forces the characters to be cowardly, useless, foolish, mediocre, obsessed but also tough pieces of gnaw.

Muy a pesar de las pequeñas similitudes, esta serie de televisión creada por Jez Butterworth, Tom Butterworth, James Richardson para Sky y Amazon Prime Video tiene sus propias virtudes. Quizás la premisa dramática no sea tan brillante, y tal vez haya mucho salvajismo en la manera de contar los hechos, pero aun así vale la pena disfrutarla sobre todo porque es un tanto cruda por no decir y visceral. In dramatic aspects, Britannia manages to forge a tense, curious atmosphere, somewhat similar to war dramas. This story uses well-devised cinematographic resources to transport us to the time where the events are inspired by mountainous landscapes and a very careful photography in this regard. That was what I liked the most about this drama full of sarcasm, irony and many gory twists. The series strives to show us bizarre characters, with very delusional and not very solemn points of view. The camera is clear in different shots: They are wild, rustic islanders, very difficult to convince. We look at a visceral environment, not very charming when it comes to loyalty, and that helps to place us in a grotesque environment. We look again at the fact of the "chosen one" and his willingness to save them all, something repetitive but that does not do so much damage to the question of Britannia. Let's just say that all I mentioned above are the strengths of this TV series, however ...
It is clear that Jez Butterworth, Tom Butterworth and James Richardson wanted to create something a bit distant from the historical facts that surrounded the history of the province of Britannia, however, such a desire ended up distancing them completely from the true history. The fantasy gradually becomes stronger, more necessary, more implicit. Gone are the rules of historical dramas to reveal a more fictitious and surreal plot. A lot of magic makes the eyes sick, because somehow this fanciful device can sometimes turn out to be a complete disaster. And it is not that Britain is, but there is a clear disposition of the scriptwriters to transform the television series into an epic fantasy, let's say, in the style of Game Of Thrones: with chosen ones, clans that fight the war, adventures to overcome , etcetera etcetera.
En aspectos dramáticos Britannia logra forjar una atmosfera tensa, curiosa, algo parecida a los dramas bélicos. Esta historia utiliza recursos cinematográficos bien ingeniados para trasportarnos a la época donde se inspiran los hechos con paisajes montañosos y una fotografía muy cuidada en este aspecto. Eso fue lo que más me gustó de este drama repleto de sarcasmo, ironía y muchos giros sangrientos. La serie se esfuerza por mostrarnos personajes bizarros, con puntos de vista muy delirantes y poco solemnes. La cámara es clara en distintas tomas: Son isleños salvajes, rústicos, muy difíciles de convencer. Miramos un entorno visceral, poco encantador cuando de lealtad se trata, y eso ayuda a situarnos en un ambiente grotesco. Miramos otra vez el hecho del “elegido” y su disposición para salvarlos a todos, algo reiterativo pero que no le hace tanto daño a la cuestión de Britannia. Digamos que todo lo que mencioné anteriormente son los puntos fuertes de esta serie de televisión, sin embargo…
Es claro que Jez Butterworth, Tom Butterworth y James Richardson quisieron crear algo un tanto distante de los hechos históricos que rodearon la historia de la provincia de Britania, sin embargo, tal deseo terminó distanciándolos completamente de la historia verdadera. La fantasía poco a poco se hace más fuerte, más necesaria, más implícita. Atrás quedan las normas que suponen los dramas históricos para develarnos una trama más ficticia y surreal. In spite of everything, I can say that I enjoyed both seasons of this television series, and I am still on the eve of the third. The performances are remarkable, not as shocking as I would like, but they were fine after all. Britannia manages to be a pleasant story, not so cloying, that takes us to an epic and totally unhinged setting. We are facing a revolution that moved the Roman Empire to play all its chips against an island with much to enrich itself. Something similar to Game Of Thrones and with touches of Vikings, but unlike these two, with their own style to put together the scenarios and betrayals.
A pesar de todo puedo decir que disfruté de las dos temporadas esta serie de televisión, y sigo en vísperas de la tercera. Las actuaciones son destacables, no tan impactantes como quisiera, pero estuvieron bien después de todo. Britania logra ser una historia agradable, no tan empalagosa, que nos lleva a un escenario épico y totalmente desquiciado.
