I recently got a movie on Netflix and just knowing what the plot was about caught my attention, however, and although I can't say it was a bad movie at all, I can only tell you that not all that glitters is gold 😄 but let me explain what it's about.

    Overview/Resumen

Kanna is a 12-year-old girl who suffers from a profound trauma after losing her mother. This trauma resurfaces every time she runs into a track and field competition at school. Her mother was a runner, and the last memory Kanna has of her is of her running. However, on one occasion, she meets a strange but friendly rabbit who reveals to her that from that moment on, she must travel to all the temples in Japan to collect shisos (a type of offering that parishioners give to the god of each temple), and later, she must deliver those offerings to the gods at their annual Izumo Taisha meeting. This is a venerable task previously held by her mother, but obviously, not everything is ever going to be so easy. From that moment on, Kanna must face her past traumas to try to overcome her loss.

    My Opinion/Mi Opinión

You all know that I like to be as honest as possible in my reviews, and I obviously recognize that my opinion doesn't define the quality of a film, because opinions will vary according to everyone's taste, so the first thing I have to say about this film is that it starts off at a very slow pace, and this pace is maintained for a good part of the film, except for one occasion when Kanna must face the challenge of the dragon god, everything else feels heavy and tedious. I understand that the intention of the film is for us to get to know the main character thoroughly, with all his flaws, that there is something that prevents him from moving forward, but there comes a point where this premise becomes repetitive.

I also understand that Kanna has lost interest in athletics and the desire to run after the death of her mother, but I found it terribly selfish when she, after having accepted the commitment to carry the shizos, simply gives up and leaves her friend Shiro (the rabbit) with the responsibility, stating that the only thing that motivated her was the hope of seeing her mother 😒, I mean, I understand that she is hurt and affected but it is not fair that she used the others, besides if she was going to behave like that, then she should have let Yasha (the oni) carry the Shizos, anyway it was a job that he wanted to do from the beginning 💁.

However, as positive points I can add several things, for example, the film has an exquisite soundtrack, with a lot of character and an enigmatic aura that matches the mythological elements that we see on screen, and that is another point in its favor, I like it when films incorporate some Japanese folklore and mythology such as festivals, oni, gods, temples and symbolism.

And another point in favor in the middle of the plot that, as I told you, sometimes became dense and repetitive, is that Kanna's journey is an analogy to the personal journey that we all have to go through, in this journey we make a self-discovery that can serve as a catharsis, only by accepting pain and mistakes can we heal, evolve and move forward 😉

And so, without anything else to add on the subject, I can only tell you in conclusion that it wasn't a bad movie, it just had a pace that was too slow for my taste, but it has a good concept and best of all, it leaves encouraging messages about overcoming, resilience and optimism 😃

Finally, our play is finished! I was really exhausted to the bones since Monday because of our intramurals and the matches I participated in *(the bruises I got from my arnis matches were now ripening *beautifully huhuhu*)*. Also, I'm part of the writers for our play in drama club, so I was really busy coordinating with a lot of things regarding our play, and since we're not funded by our university, we need to find a way to get funds.

That's why we decided to have a booth to gather funds for our play, and while facilitating our booth last Monday, I got bored because by the time afternoon started, the request for handwritten letters decreased. And that's where I got my little free time! I already downloaded something to watch on Sunday. So without further delay, let's join Kanna as she runs to complete an important task—a task that could possibly affect not only her future but as well as the future of her entire country.

    About the Anime

    IMG_20241107_181703.jpg

Child of Kamiari Month (Kamiarizuki no Kodomo) is an anime movie that premiered on October 8, 2021. It was produced by ABC Animation and was animated by LIDENFILMS. Its genres are mostly about adventure and supernaturals, but you can as well find a considerable amount of drama there. On the other hand, its theme revolves around Japanese culture—most especially its mythology. This movie is an original story made by Toshinari Shinohe, the founder of Cretica Universal, who was inspired by the Japanese mythology behind Izumo's Kamiari Festival. It's friendly to all ages, so everyone can really watch it.

So it started with a girl named Kanna, who seemed to have an uncertain dislike for running. She even has to act like she's in cramps just to ditch their running practice. It turns out that she once liked running, but ever since her mother died, she hates the idea of it again. On the day of their school marathon, despite her father's supporting presence on the marathon, Kanna's dislike for running surged up. Flashbacks of her past came to her, and that propelled her to run away—away from everything that reminds her of her mother.

    IMG_20241107_181737.jpg

However, the gods sure have other plans for her because, as she ran away from the marathon, she stumbled on her favorite rabbit, Shiro. But Shiro isn't only Shiro the rabbit anymore, for it became a divine messenger. Also, she met a quite hostile demon boy, and together with Shiro, they revealed to her the true identity of her mother. With her mother's identity revealed, she was entrusted with a new responsibility—a responsibility that she's obligated to fulfill. Hopeful to see her mother for the last time, she takes on the task, not knowing of the unknown dangers that lurk on her way. These dangers will not only test her endurance but also her will and resolve to finish the whole quest.

    IMG_20241107_181748.jpg

I'm really fond of mythologies, and the moment I knew it has mythology in its theme, I was pretty hype about it. Honestly, I'm expecting more from it, but I think it didn't meet my expectations. The plot was pretty bland and conventional. I didn't feel much emotion on the part that's supposed to portray the sadness of the MC. I expected that part to be portrayed in a more deep and meaningful way, but it's just the usual MC reminiscing about her memories. I'm waiting for a hooking plot twist or something that would set the mood up, but I guess I expected too much again. I think the fact that it's made to be friendly for all viewers limited its way of portrayal of the grief and loss.

    IMG_20241107_181909.jpg

The only thing that I somehow did not expect is the ending. It's so simple and anticlimactic to the point that I didn't see it coming. Nevertheless, on the mythology premise, it showed a lot of gods, which I pretty much forgot by now because their characters were not delved in. I'm not that familiar with the gods and goddesses of Japanese mythology, so I was hoping that they would at least give interesting backstories about them. Anyway, I was somehow amazed at the number of gods from different regions in Japan. Before, I was only interested in Japanese folklore and mythical creatures, but now I'm curious on the backstories of those gods.

    IMG_20241107_181926.jpg

Even though I don't find the plot that exciting, the portrayal of the sceneries was sure one of the redeeming qualities of the movie. They really portrayed those sceneries beautifully, and seeing it just amplify my wish that someday I can visit Japan. It's art style was pretty clean, and the characters were portrayed in a cute manner. I think I didn't see any character with rough features—they indeed made it appropriate for all ages—most especially for those younger viewers. The animation wasn't bad nor really great, but it's decent, and it just fit perfectly to the target demographic of the movie.

    IMG_20241107_181952.jpg

Overall, my personal rating for this movie is 7/10. Yeah, it's really a lighthearted and heartwarming story, but since it involves Japanese mythology, I somehow hoped that the plot would be much more interesting. It was pretty predictable, and I really did expect a nice plot twist. I'm not fond of cute and generic anime movies, so I think this movie is kinda a mismatch for me, but nevertheless I somehow enjoyed it, and I definitely learned about Japanese culture from it. So if you're up for a cute and lighthearted movie that features Japanese mythology, then you really need to try watching the Child of Kamiari Month.   Before I end this review, I gladly share with you its , so—

Netflix in recent years has achieved something that was impossible for me before (at least officially), watch movies recently released in Japan, especially anime. This is the case of this movie that premiered in Japan in October last year and has already been distributed internationally a few days ago, by the platform. The director was Takana Shirai.

The main theme is to see the process the protagonist goes through to get over the death of her mother, as well as reconnect with what she loves. The problem with the plot is that although they show a journey through various locations, it feels routine, without dynamics, very linear. On the other hand, there are too many explanations pausing the action.

I also think that the characters are very flat, with the exception of the protagonist, they don't connect. At least the final stretch, already for the last 30 minutes, they manage to improve the rhythm and manage to connect better with Kanna's emotions, including a good song.

About the animation I must say that in several sections it feels very limited. I found out that this project was made through crowdfunding, so I guess the budget didn't allow a big investment in this section.

Overall, it is a regular movie, that although it could have had an interesting story to tell, its various shortcomings in how they handled the plot and animation, do not allow it to shine.
