Main names associated with the film
This film is from the 90s, so even though it was an HBO production most actors/actresses were unknown to me. However, there were 4 of them that I could recognize. The main character is played by Stephen Rea, who is best known for his role in the great movie V for Vendetta and he also played a secondary character in the British series Utopia. He has participated in a lot of productions throughout the years, but I believe these 2 are probably the most popular and the ones where I remember seeing this actor.
Donald Sutherland plays the second most important character and is certainly the most popular member of the cast. This is an actor with extensive experience in this industry and some movies where he has participated in recent years are the Hunger Games films, The Best Offer, and Ad Astra. All of them good films although his roles have been secondary ones for the most part.
Max von Sydow plays a secondary role and I was only able to recognize this actor because he also played a secondary role in the movie Shutter Island, which was a great thriller with an awesome twist. This guy might not be very popular, but since I could recognize him I decided to include him. His role is secondary but takes part in a key moment during the story.
Finally, we have Imelda Staunton and I would bet most Harry Potter fans will be able to recognize her. In those movies, she played a very mean and cruel teacher that enjoyed hurting Harry. This time she is just a dutiful wife and mother.

Este tipo puede que no sea muy popular, pero como pude reconocerlo, decidí incluirlo. Su papel es secundario pero participa en un momento clave de la historia.
Finalmente, tenemos a Imelda Staunton y apuesto a que la mayoría de los fanáticos de Harry Potter podrán reconocerla. En esas películas, interpretó a una maestra muy mala y cruel que disfrutaba lastimando a Harry. Esta vez ella es solo una esposa y madre responsable.

What was the movie about?
Citizen X is a film based on real-life events about a serial killer in the Soviet Union who hunts down vulnerable people in train stations and kills them in the woods. The entire movie is about how to investigate and bring to prison the person who is committing all of these crimes.
A forensic specialist, played by Stephen Rea, is assigned the responsibility of leading this investigation, and a difficult process that will last several years begins. The Soviet Union was a very backward country, its impractical and immoral socialist ideology made everything very difficult and the bureaucracy was very hard to navigate for people who just wanted to achieve good results.
We will see a lot of examples of how this ineffective system reduced the efficiency of the work made by the lead investigator. The bosses weren't interested in damaging the country's reputation by admitting there was a serial killer so they did all sorts of things to reduce the importance of this case. The fact people were getting killed was of little importance to them, the only thing that mattered was the reputation.
The 2 main characters, the forensic specialist and the colonel he reports to played by Donald Sutherland will find a way to work together despite all the systematic inefficiencies and do everything they can to solve these cases.
The film had a proper pace, but this isn't a serial killer masterpiece. There was a lot of emphasis on how ineffective the Soviet Union was thanks to their ideology, and this was understandable because that was a big factor that delayed the solution to these crimes. With a more practical approach, they would have caught the killer years earlier and saved a lot of lives.

Citizen X es una película basada en hechos reales sobre un asesino en serie en la Unión Soviética que persigue a personas vulnerables en las estaciones de tren y las mata en el bosque. Toda la película trata sobre cómo investigar y llevar a prisión a la persona que está cometiendo todos estos crímenes.
A un especialista forense, interpretado por Stephen Rea, se le asigna la responsabilidad de liderar esta investigación, y comienza un difícil proceso que durará varios años. La Unión Soviética era un país muy atrasado, su ideología socialista poco práctica e inmoral hacía que todo fuera muy difícil y la burocracia era muy complicada de navegar para las personas que solo querían lograr buenos resultados.

Los 2 personajes principales, el especialista forense y el coronel al que informa interpretado por Donald Sutherland, encontrarán la manera de trabajar juntos a pesar de todas las ineficiencias sistemáticas y harán todo lo posible para resolver estos casos.
La película tuvo un ritmo adecuado, pero esta no es una obra maestra de un asesino en serie. Se puso mucho énfasis en lo ineficaz que era la Unión Soviética gracias a su ideología, y esto era comprensible porque ese fue un factor importante que retrasó la solución de estos crímenes. Con un enfoque más práctico, habrían atrapado al asesino años antes y salvado muchas vidas.

How were the performance, the settings and cinematography?
The main actor, Stephen Rea, had a neutral performance. He didn't show many expressions and always seemed to have the same face no matter what. Maybe that's how he wanted to portray the character or maybe that's how the character was written, but this was a clear contrast with how Donald Sutherland played his role. He had some moments where his expressions were very clear, and he also showed some emotions in a very believable way.
The scene with the best performance in my opinion was during the final interrogation scene by the actor Jeffrey DeMunn who played the killer. The way he portrayed his conflicted emotions felt very intense and real.
The settings felt like a regular Easter Europe place. There were some political posters that were normal during that era in that type of country, but nothing about the setting felt very special and the same can be said about the cinematography. There were no impressive shots or interesting camera angles, it was all just regular.
Final thoughts
Citizen X was an entertaining film to watch, it was interesting to see how the Soviet Union approached these criminal cases not in a practical way but rather by putting ideology first. The film also had a few scenes that could be fun for some viewers but have in mind this isn't a comedy film but a very serious drama.
¿Cómo fue la actuación, la configuración y la cinematografía?
El actor principal, Stephen Rea, tuvo una actuación neutral. No mostró muchas expresiones y siempre parecía tener el mismo rostro sin importar qué. Tal vez así es como quería retratar al personaje o tal vez así es como se escribió el personaje, pero esto fue un claro contraste con la forma en que Donald Sutherland interpretó su papel. Tuvo algunos momentos donde sus expresiones fueron muy claras, y también mostró algunas emociones de una manera muy creíble.
La escena con la mejor actuación en mi opinión fue durante la escena del interrogatorio final del asesino interpretado por el actor Jeffrey DeMunn . La forma en que retrató sus emociones conflictivas se sintió muy intensa y real.
Los escenarios parecían un lugar habitual en Europa del Este. Hubo algunos carteles políticos que eran normales durante esa época en ese tipo de país, pero nada en el escenario se sintió muy especial y lo mismo se puede decir de la cinematografía. No hubo tomas impresionantes ni ángulos de cámara interesantes, todo fue normal.
Reflexiones finales
Citizen X fue una película entretenida de ver, fue interesante ver cómo la Unión Soviética abordó estos casos criminales no de una manera práctica, sino poniendo la ideología en primer lugar. La película también tenía algunas escenas que podrían ser divertidas para algunos espectadores, pero ten en cuenta que no se trata de una película de comedia, sino de un drama muy serio.
