    In the filthy land

Lovecraft created extraordinary and filthy stories while inspiring other writers. The hermit from Providence in his prime created the story Color out the Space. Nearly 70 years later we lived to see an intriguing film adaptation of this work.

The work of Rishard Stanley combines elements of old SciFi cinema with a full dose of weirdness and nonsense, but also adds a lot of new formula creating a filthy work worth watching. The film is loosely inspired by the story and moves it into the present day, with many elements slightly altered and modernised to make the overall feel more relevant to our times.

Despite being a horror film, The Color out of space has a very interesting second layer. The concept itself is simple and even if you have not read Lovecraft and are not fond of his works, you will quickly absorb the atmosphere of the production.

In a small town On the outskirts of Arkham lives the Gardner family, one evening a meteorite falls on their garden which glows brightly in many colours, from then on something strange happens to the family.

Nicolas Cage has appeared several times on my blog. This time he got the roles of father and head of the family. His role was very interesting. There is not too much exaggerated role here and you feel that such character could exist. It's a pity that the actor fluctuates between good roles and very poor ones and as viewers we wander watching a film with him either leaving the cinema satisfied or embarrassed by the level of the principality, in this case there is a surprise because he played it very well.

The film is also one of those films that play with colour (it probably has a professional name), sometimes certain scenes are shown in a large dose of a given colour, which is supposed to heighten the tension. Playing with colours often happens in horror movies, I love when in the forest we suddenly get blood red colour or some other colour not matching the surroundings. Here, playing with colours makes a lot of sense, as the title itself suggests that colour will be a frequent guest on the screen and it is no different, with scenes that simply hypnotise the viewer with their colour and backgrounds, creating an unusual image and a feast for the eyes.

There is a problem with Lovecraft's stories, every one of his filthy works no one can sensibly translate into film, we had a very good Spanish film Dagon and a silent Cthulhu and that is where Lovecraft's land ends. The Color out of space is a successful film and can easily be watched alongside Dagon without the embarrassment that the production suffers greatly. It is a pity that many works of the hermit from Providence are not sensibly translated into film and if they are, they are in the form of comedies like Reanimator which is based on Lovecraft's story.

The plot of The Color is interesting and suspenseful, and the further the plot develops the more and more wicked weirdos appear on the screen and it pleases the eye, because you can see that the creatures were created by hand without the use of computer effects, which is a small laurel to the famous Something.

I enjoyed the film and even Cage doesn't get in the way and his role is interestingly handled, the same with the rest of the family, you feel a tower with them and really by the end of the film anything can happen.

Dzieło Risharda Stanleya łączy w sobie elementy dawnego kina SciFi z pełna doza dziwactw i glupotek, ale i dorzuca dużo nowej formuły tworząc plugawe dzieło warte obejrzenia. Film luźno inspiruje się opowiadaniem przenosząc go do czasów współczesnych, wiele elementów lekko zmieniając i unowocześniając by ogólny odbiór bardziej pasował do naszych czasów.

What the hell was that? Well, that is a much needed responses when you watch a movie based on an H.P. Lovecraft story. It took some convincing to make me watch this movie. The last time I watched a horror movie with Nicolas Cage was Mandy which I couldn't actually finish watching because it was so bad and unwatchable in my opinion. This movie, luckily, does not suffer the same fatal flaws. Like let's get down to it.

Color out of Space is based on a short story with the same name by H.P. Lovecraft and the script was written by Scarlett Amaris who previously wrote a few unknown horror movies. It is directed by Richard Stanley who has a lot of known and unknown horror movies under his belt and has already tried to adapt Lovecraft stories before. This is a cosmic horror fun weird B level movie.

The story follows the Gardner (I think pun intended in this case) family of five who just moved to a farm (in a Lovecraftian town in Massachusetts) after the mother recovers from breast cancer surgery. Nathan is the father of the family (played by Nicolas Cage), the mother is Theresa (played by Joely Richardson, forever Anita from 101 Dalmatians), Benny is their oldest son (played by Brendan Meyer), Lavinia is their daughter who practices Wicca (played by Madeleine Arthur) to try and heal her mother and Jack is just a child (played by Julian Hilliard). Tommy Chong (Leo from That '70s Show) is also in this movie, playing the same character as Leo. Elliot Knight plays Ward the hydrologist who surveys the water for a dam that is to be built in the area.

The Gardner family try and have a normal life in their new farm life. Which is totally not normal. They have Alpacas on their farm instead of cows for crying out loud, that is hilarious in my opinion. One night a meteor lands on their land. A purple meteor. Time for a Lovecraft stuff to start. Plus this movie has a lot of Lovecraft Easter Eggs. Now, no one seems too concerned about this meteor and only the local media covers the crash. Then suddenly the meteor disappears and things start to get strange. Purple stuff start to grow around the landing site, only it is a color that no one has a name for. Internet starts to not work occasionally and TV reception becomes bad and you know. Lovecraft horror stuff starts. The only sane person is Ward who simply tries to do his job when all of this hell starts to break loss. And he is the one that notices that something is very wrong.

As for the acting, everyone is doing a decent job here. Elliot Knight is good as the calm and sensible person, while everyone is doing their best to be totally over the top. Except for Nicolas Cage, he is relatively subdued here. Because his over the top is so much more than anyone else's. The acting isn't superb, but everyone are ok in this movie.

The movie is beautiful in all its eldritch horror. However, this movie came out in 20 September, 2019 and production started early in 2019, and this movie's esthetics really really reminded me of Annihilation (2018). There are so many time in this movie that I thought that the visuals are really similar even though the concept is not. If you liked how Annihilation looked, you will like this movie. Although don't forget that these movies are totally different so there is nothing similar about their ending.

Even though the similarities to Annihilation bugged me. It was a fun and really strange, kind of disturbing horror movie. I liked it more than I thought that I will. In the never ending spare time ahead of us, you could totally check out this movie. If you love H.P. Lovecraft you should totally watch this movie. It's one of the best adaptation of his work (I don't include TV shows when I say this).

The movie is now available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime.

This film was quite a bizarre experience. Not only because I am not used to watching Lovecraft style horror but also because the film itself does a weird use of lights that surprisingly ends up working!

The story is about a family that is living on a small remote farm and one day, suddenly a small meteor crashes next to their house! The thing is, this meteor is not a normal one, it has a weird pink brightness, and it also brought a strange smell.

It doesn't take long until crazy stuff begins to happen and we slowly begin to realize the actual nature of the strange object that came from outer space. The cast is quite short and we can see this is not a large production but the end result was certainly interesting enough.

    image.png

Nicholas Cage does an "OK" performance with this role, most of the time he is good but there was a moment where he pretends to be extremely frustrated and full of rage that I didn't buy. Maybe I felt like this because I just came from watching Big Little Lies where major actresses are always playing a frustrated or angry character... Except for that little scene in the car, I enjoyed Cage's performances very much.

The other cast members are not as popular, but they were all right. Color out of space is attractive thanks to its intriguing plot as well as the CGI, not necessarily for its cast.

This film is well worth the watch especially for Lovecraft's and sci-fi fans. It was very different from what is usually produced, it has several good moments, it is not that scary but finding it entertaining shouldn't be a problem. I think the film wanted to be scarier in some scenes but they didn't achieve a decent level of creepiness/scariness for this to be considered a proper horror film. It is mainly a sci-fi with a slight touch of Lovecraftian horror.

    image.png

I applaud the fact that these movies are being produced, this type of horror is always welcomed by the genre's fans but truth be told, it was far from the best of what I have seen in both the horror genre and the sci-fi genre. I read the goal is for this film to be the first of a new trilogy of Lovecraftian horror movies. If that's the case I would be extremely happy.

    The best

    • Very original and bizarrely entertaining movie.
    • Good moments with Nicholas Cage.
    • Well-done creatures.
    • Nice looking CGI including lights to represent a world that is rapidly changing into the unknown.

    The worst

    • Some dialogue felt a bit generic.
    • I got kind of bored for a while, especially in the second half of the film. I also felt the film lasted longer than necessary. The ending was still very fun though.
