   Hello cinema lovers. Although October (the Month of Horror) is over, you can still feel in the air that desire to see more horror movies. And it is in these dates that one easily remembers with such nostalgia and attachment this film that we will talk about tonight. This is one of the very few Stop-Motion animated feature films that I have seen and that have fascinated me a lot. I remember that when I was younger I didn't see it as a horror movie, but rather as a story of adventure, mystery and fantasy with a somewhat... curious style. It wasn't until I grew up that, remembering the story and the dark details it has, that I was able to notice how disturbing it is in many ways. Being nothing more or less than the first work that the renowned studio house Laika has produced, this film was directed by Henry Selick and is based on the novel of the same name written by Neil Gaiman. This is one of those movies that is difficult to find a perfect box for it, being an ideal option to watch anytime and anywhere. A film that I recommend to everyone, but especially to fans of the dark fantasy, mystery and horror genre. Stay and see one of the best animated works in the history of modern cinema.

Y es en estas fechas en las que uno fácilmente recuerda con tanta nostalgia y apego esta película de la cual hablaremos la noche de hoy. Este es uno de los poquísimos largometrajes animados al estilo “Stop-Motion” que he visto y que me han fascinado bastante. Recuerdo que cuando era más chico no lo veía como una película de terror, sino más bien como una historia de aventura, misterio y fantasía con un estilo un tanto… curioso. No fue sino después de grande que, al recordar la historia y los detalles oscuros que tiene, que pude notar lo perturbador que es en muchos sentidos. Siendo nada más ni nada menos que la primera obra que la reconocida casa de estudio Laika ha producido, esta película estuvo a cargo de Henry Selick y está basada en la novela que lleva su mismo nombre escrita por Neil Gaiman. Esta es de esas películas que es difícil encontrarle una casilla perfecta para ella, siendo una opción idónea para ver en cualquier momento y en cualquier lugar. Una cinta que se la recomiendo a todo el mundo, pero sobre todo a los fanáticos del género de fantasía oscura, misterio y horror.    Plot

   The film introduces us to the Jones Family, which consists of Charlie the father and husband, Mel the mother and wife, and Coraline the only daughter of the family. They move into an old Victorian-era house in Ashland, Oregon called "The Pink Palace". Coraline is a girl who would rather be outside playing than being cooped up, unlike her parents who are writers and spend most of their time cooped up at home working. She decides to go out one day, after it rains, to find a well, but on the way she meets the owner's grandson, who the next day gives her a rag doll that looks a lot like her (with her distinctive blue hair and yellow overalls). She receives the doll, but does not like him or the other members of the palace who are eccentric and strange and always confuse her name with "Caroline". One day, bored at home, she finds a small door under the wall of the living room, which when she opens, she runs into a brick wall, sealing the passage. But that same night, she returns to open the door again to find that this time there is a secret passageway that takes her to a parallel world very similar to her own, but much more colorful, bright and fantastic.

   Thinking back and thinking carefully about this film, it is impossible not to realize how fantastic it is in every way. It is undoubtedly one of the best works that the Laika studio has done in its entire history, with a success that does it justice. While I've seen this film the most since I was a kid, I've never ceased to be amazed every time by both how fantastic and how deeply disturbing this story is. Most curious of all is the fact that it is a "Kid's Movie", that's right, a film of this style with a level of dark fantasy, mystery and horror that with a couple of darker tones can easily become every child's nightmare. I remember that back then I was a kid who knew a lot of horror movies and that in comparison, this film was just a work of adventure, fantasy and mystery with nothing more to offer than a very well done visual spectacle. But as I grew up and realized the depth of its story, I now watch it not only with a sense of fascination and nostalgia, but also with a sense of disturbance because of how dark it is both symbolically and visually.

Sin duda alguna es de los mejores trabajos que el estudio Laika ha realizado en toda su historia, con un éxito que le hace justicia. Si bien soy de los que más ha visto esta película desde que era pequeño, nunca me ha dejado de sorprender cada vez tanto lo fantástico como lo profundamente perturbadora que es esta historia. Lo más curioso de todo es el hecho de que sea una “Película para Niños”, así es, una cinta de este estilo con un nivel de fantasía oscura, misterio y horror que con un par de tonos más oscuros puede convertirse fácilmente en la pesadilla de todo niño. Si recuerdo que en aquel entonces era un chico que conocía bastantes películas de terror y que en comparación, esta cinta era nomás una obra de aventura, fantasía y misterio sin nada más que ofrecer que un espectáculo visual muy bien hecho. One of the best movie introductions ever, really. Then we meet the Jones family, who are parents who are writers and do not devote much time and attention to their only daughter, Coraline, who is one of those protagonists who stand out both for her personality, curiosity about the mystery or her conceited way of seeing and treating people. She just wants to play, go out to have fun and enjoy nature, something that her parents do not want, which generates this clash or problem between both sides. It is normal that not having what she wants, she looks for a place where she can escape from her boring and cold reality. It is here where she comes across the small door that leads her to a parallel world, a fantastic world, colorful, bright and with versions of her parents and neighbors that are much more cheerful and entertaining than the real ones.

   This can easily be compared to that fantasy world that anyone seeks to find to escape from the dark and boring reality in which one lives. This fantasy world can be the internet as well as the world of books, movies, series or TV shows. However, just as Coraline did, surely we, out of curiosity or desire, want to stay and "live in that fantastic world" forever, something that can cost us dearly. In Coraline's case, it would cost her her eyes, which would have to be replaced by buttons, as everyone in this other world has them. But what she doesn't know is that this deal can lead her to a much darker end than she expects. It is here when we talk about the "Other Mother" who in the world of cinema and more so in animated films, we remember her nostalgically for being one of the most terrifying and disturbing villains, at least for children. This antagonist, who is presented at the beginning as the best version of her mother, funny, interested in Coraline's happiness and well-being and in her staying forever, gradually transforms, deforming herself until she becomes a real monster. She is the living representation of the dark side that every fantasy world possesses.

   This is when I start thinking about the dark origin or dark side of this story. Being adapted from a dark fantasy and horror novel, it is to be expected that the theme of dark magic, witches and children, is something we notice quite a bit throughout this film. Those of us who are connoisseurs of dark fantasy works know how disturbing it is to introduce a "witch" into a "children's" story. It is here that everything we see in this story becomes much darker and scarier than it already appears to be at first glance. What did the "Other Mother" do with the children she trapped in this "Other World"? How did she "feed" on their souls or their "eyes"? How did she choose her victims? What happened at the end of the film? According to this last question, it is curious that, as it shows us, its ending has both a mysterious and disturbing feeling at the same time. Those last seconds that make us think a lot, going from being a simple fantasy and adventure film to a mystery that remains embedded in your head to this day thinking about which world is real or fictional. Undoubtedly, this and many other questions that this film gives us throughout its history, makes it one of the best made works in existence today. It is so well made that it is difficult to differentiate it between an animated film for children or a cult work of the horror genre.

En el caso de Coraline le costaría sus ojos, los cuales tendrían que cambiarlos por botones, como todos los que están en este otro mundo los tienen. Pero lo que ella no sabe es que ese trato puede llevarla a un final mucho más oscuro de lo que ella espera. Es aquí cuando hablamos de la “Otra Madre” quien dentro del mundo del cine y más del cine animado la recordamos nostálgicamente por ser una de las villanas más aterradoras y perturbadoras, al menos para los niños. Los que somos conocedores de obras de fantasía oscura sabemos lo perturbador que es introducir a una “bruja” en un cuento “para niños”. Es aquí donde todo lo que vemos en esta historia se torna mucho más oscuro y aterrador de lo que ya aparenta ser a simple vista. ¿Qué hacía la “Otra Madre” con los niños que atrapaba en este “Otro Mundo”? ¿De qué manera ella se “alimentaba” de sus almas o sus “ojos”? ¿Cómo escogía ella a sus víctimas? ¿Qué sucedió al final de la película? De acuerdo a esta última pregunta, es curioso que, como la misma nos muestra, su final tenga una sensación tanto misteriosa como perturbadora a la vez. Esos últimos segundos que nos ponen a pensar bastante, pasando de ser una simple película de fantasía y aventura a ser un misterio que te queda incrustado en la cabeza hasta el día de hoy pensando en qué mundo es el real o el ficticio. Sin duda alguna que, tanto esta como muchas otras preguntas que nos da esta cinta a lo largo de su historia, la hace una de las obras mejor hechas que existen en la actualidad.    Leaving aside the excellent work in terms of story and character development, this film also has a lot to talk about and appreciate in terms of technical level. Honestly, I'm not a fan of "Stop-Motion". But the work that Laika studio did in this movie is wonderful, since you can tell that it is of this type of animation, but it is so well done that in many occasions you can hardly notice it. The work in terms of character design is 10/10, giving us both versions of several characters with notable distinctions and even final results that are incredible and at the same time disturbing. The result of this style of animation is also appreciable, giving us depth, landscapes and a 3D style that is quite pleasing to the eye. The fluidity of the characters and each scene is so well done that it is incredible to think about the amount of work that went into this film. It's as if in many moments we thought it was made partly by computer, but no, it's 100% Stop-Motion animated, which is quite surprising, to be honest. The sound effects are very well done, giving that realistic feeling to each scenario. The soundtrack is one of the most unforgettable of the whole movie, with sounds and harmonies that generate fascination, nostalgia and joy, as well as mystery and horror. A soundtrack that managed to stand the test of time along with the film and be remembered forever as one of the best that can be found in the world of cinema. In short, a film that is perfect to watch, enjoy, disturb and wonder at the same time.

   Personally, I give it a 9.5/10 rating for the dark fantasy, mystery, adventure and horror genre.

   And falling back into my vicious circle of the animation world, here I bring you one that, for its time (and perhaps still), was miscast as a children's film. The obvious surprise in the theaters themselves, abounded. It was very strange and “fanciful”, even for children, who clearly didn't understand much (or anything) and were left with only what they saw, thus leaving it in oblivion. So, first of all, this animated film is NOT CHILDREN'S FILM. Coraline is a stop-motion animated film, a dark fantasy directed by Henry Selick (same director of Jim and The Giant Peach, another 90's animation gem) and is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's graphic novel. It deals with deep themes mixing a bit of horror and occultism, but it also has an immense psychological background; so no, it is not at all childish or family friendly (unless your children are horror-loving “weirdos” and understand certain things, like yours truly at that age). By the way, this film was re-released in August of this year, to celebrate its 15th anniversary, with a remastered 3D version.

   Por otra parte, el trabajo de producción y construcción de cada personaje y estructura, es sublime. Los detalles de los efectos visuales digitales, le da ese toque más estilizado, como si de un sueño se tratara. Ídem con la banda sonora, todo fue minuciosamente orquestado para exaltar toda experiencia que, de por sí, ya es muy buena. Justo como disfrutar en estos días de Halloween con par de pizzas. Y creo que está de más, pero si me lo preguntan, les responderé como siempre: “Sino la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.

   Si han leído algún otro post mío sabrán (de sobra) que me gustan las historias de fantasía oscura. Tienen algo, una magia muy particular que puede llegar a ser inquietante pero que a mí me encanta y me mantiene completamente entretenida.

   Una de esas películas que cumple con esas características es Coraline, un referente en la animación que hasta hoy sigue teniendo bastante fama. En el post de hoy les compartiré mi opinión sin spoilers.

   If you have read any of my other posts you will know (very well) that I like dark fantasy stories. They have something, a very particular magic that can be uncanny but that I really love and keeps me completely entertained.

   One of those films that meets these characteristics is Coraline, a reference in animation that continues to be quite famous to this day. In today's post I will share with you my opinion about it without spoilers.

   La familia Jones se muda al Palacio Rosa, una enorme casa que fue dividida en departamentos, por lo que los vecinos están bastante cerca entre sí. La familia está conformada por un matrimonio con una hija, la pequeña pero vivaz Coraline Jones, una niña de carácter fuerte, aventurera y perspicaz, pero bastante testaruda así como un tanto inmadura.

   A Coraline le cuesta trabajo adaptarse a la nueva dinámica, se aburre e irrita con mucha facilidad y siente que sus padres realmente no le prestan atención.    The Jones family moves to the Pink Palace, a huge house that was divided into apartments, so the neighbors are quite close to each other.    Coraline has a hard time adjusting to her new dynamic, she gets bored and irritated very easily and she feels like her parents don't really pay attention to her.    It is interesting to see how they mix certain horror elements with the most innocent characters and scenes, because even though it is supposed to be a children's film, it includes things that could be scary. I've heard more than one person say that they don't really enjoy this movie because it's uncanny, but I think that's precisely what makes it so good: it's not a movie to be delightful, but to be captivating and interesting. The characters are weird, the plot is even weirder, everything is done intentionally to generate that feeling of “I don't know what I'm watching, I don't exactly feel comfortable, but I like it”

   Algo que también aporta a esa sensación «inquietante» es la animación stop motion, puesto que los movimientos no son del todo naturales, así que hace sentir como que algo no está exactamente «bien». Este es mi tipo de animación favorita porque me parece que el resultado es genial y el trabajo que hay detrás es increíble. Lograr hacer que cada frame encaje perfectamente para dar la consecución de imágenes fluidas, hacer todas las figuras y elementos utilizados a tamaño escala... Simplemente impresionante.

   Y no, esta película no es de Tim Burton. El director es en realidad Henry Selick, quien brilló por este gran trabajo en 2009.

   Something that also contributes to that "uncanny" feeling is the stop motion animation, since the movements are not completely natural, so it makes you feel like something is not quite "right". This is my favorite type of animation because I think the result is great and the work behind it is incredible. Managing to make each frame fit perfectly to achieve a fluid sequence of images, making all the figures and elements used at scale size... Simply impressive.

   And no, this movie is not by Tim Burton. The director is actually Henry Selick, who shone for this great work in 2009.

   Todo el diseño es precioso, el guión es perfecto para narrar la historia muy bien detallada y además hacerle conectar con los personajes, empatizando con Coraline y temiéndole a «la otra madre».

   En varios vídeos en YouTube que vi alguna vez comentaban que esta historia está basada en supuestos hechos reales, siendo la historia original verdaderamente perturbadora, de puro terror. Sin embargo, para que la adaptación fuese más fácil de ver fue bastante suavizada. Si esto es cierto realmente lo desconozco, pero he de decir que cualquiera de las dos versiones es buenísima, solo que variaría el público que pudiera ver la historia, una siendo apta para todo público y la otra para adultos solamente.

   The entire design is beautiful, the script is perfect for telling the story very well in detail and also making you connect with the characters, empathizing with Coraline and fearing "the other mother".

   In several videos on YouTube that I once saw, they commented that this story is based on supposed real events, the original story being truly disturbing, pure terror. However, to make the adaptation easier to watch it was softened quite a bit. If this is true, I really don't know, but I have to say that either version is great, it's just that the audience that could watch the story would vary, one being family friendly and the other for adults only.

   El mensaje que considero que transmite esta película es apreciar lo que tienes, valorar las cosas positivas que tienes en la vida porque no sabes en qué momento puedes perderlas. Y también la tolerancia y empatía, aprendiendo a convivir con las personas que nos rodean que pueden no ser perfectos, pero están haciendo lo mejor que pueden. A pesar de los elementos de terror suave que puede tener, la historia realmente deja mensajes significativos que los niños pueden comprender fácilmente puesto que está escrita para que se aprecie claramente.

   Como toda película para niños, quizá los más pequeños no entiendan el mensaje a la primera, pero sí generará cierta impresión que hará que en un futuro vuelvan a verla y entiendan mejor lo que se quiso transmitir. Esto me pasó con muchas películas que vi de pequeña, aunque creo que con Coraline el mensaje fue tan claro que pude llegar a entenderlo.

   The message that I think this movie conveys is to appreciate what you have, value the positive things you have in life because you don't know when you can lose them. And also tolerance and empathy, learning to live with the people around us who may not be perfect, but are doing the best they can. Despite the mild horror elements it may have, the story really leaves meaningful messages that children can easily understand since it is written so that it can be clearly appreciated.

   Like any film for children, the little ones may not understand the message at first, but it will generate a certain impression that will make them watch it again in the future and better understand what was intended to be conveyed. This happened to me with many films that I saw when I was little, although I think that with Coraline the message was so clear that I was able to understand it.

Esta película duró exactamente 2 años en poder ser completada, ya que en hacer los personajes, cada mínima escena y cada pequeña expresión, les llevó muchísimas horas lo que se puede resumir a 2 años de producción y edición por parte de la cada productora Laika.

Both are elderly actresses who live together and share their passion for acting. These peculiar women share their lives with many dogs of the same breed, which when they die are stuffed by themselves.

Aquí es donde se encuentra con Wybie Lovat, un chico algo extraño que vive cerca de la casa rosa, ese le advierte que podría caerse en el pozo y luego de una pequeña platica se va. Así es como al día siguiente, nuestro amigo Wybie le regala una muñeca que encontró encontró su casa, la cual es exactamente igual a coraline.

   Our protagonist begins to walk around the house and to look for all kinds of peculiarities in it. While doing so, she gets a small door which seemed to be a dog's door because of its small size. Coraline asks her mother to open it so she can see exactly what was inside. Her disappointment was great when she saw that behind this door there were only bricks.

   En la noche, esta se decide a dormir, hasta que ve a un pequeño ratón corriendo por todo su cuarto y así es como empieza a perseguirlo. Coraline ve como el ratón se mete dentro de la puerta que estaba sellada, se acerca a la puerta para ver como de esta se despliega un túnel el cual conecta a otra puerta lejana. Coraline siendo tan curiosa, decide cruzar el túnel para encontrar una realidad completamente distinta. En esta estaban sus padres pero muchos más felices y amables con ella. Rápidamente se da cuenta como estos tienen botones en vez de ojos pero esta sigue hablando con ellos. Ellos le invitan a cenar y comparten una comida extraordinaria la cual coraline jamás había comido. Luego de la cena, esta se va a dormir en su cuarto de esta otra familia, el cual estaba hermosamente decorado y mucho más presentable que su cuarto real, ella se duerme y despierta en su verdadera casa con sus verdaderos padres, por esto decide pensar que todo fue un sueño

   At night, she decides to go to sleep, until she sees a small mouse running around her room and starts chasing it. Coraline sees how the mouse gets inside the door that was sealed, she approaches the door to see how it unfolds a tunnel which connects to another door far away. She quickly notices how they have buttons instead of eyes but she keeps talking to them. They invite her to dinner and share an extraordinary meal which Coraline has never eaten before. After dinner, she goes to sleep in her room of this other family, which was beautifully decorated and much more presentable than her real room, she falls asleep and wakes up in her real house with her real parents, so she decides to think that it was all a dream.

   Personalmente me encanta muchísimo esta película y su gran historia. Me encanta que la hayan logrado hacer tipo stopmotion, ya que principalmente los planes para esta película es que sería Liveaction. Opinión que habría perdido todo su encanto si así fuera.

   From here I want to talk only about my opinion, starting with the story, I found very interesting the fact of creating an alternate reality where things are quite similar to the real world, thus generating a kind of comparison between what is real and what is not, likewise what is good and what is not, but what captivated me most was the depth of the story, because although it is disguised as an animation and many consider that this only serves to tell children's stories and there is nothing further from reality, it seems to me a very complete story and that depending on the age with which you see the film, you will understand different things and this seems to me very good, it allows anyone to enjoy this film.

   Something that I think is very important to talk about, is the fact that Coraline is promoted as a children's movie and if I'm honest, I feel that it's not childish at all, clearly if you see it from the perspective of a child it can be innocent, but I think that if you see it as an adult, it has a very deep, sad and somewhat disturbing story, I could even say that this movie has given me more fear than any other current horror movie for over 18 years old, is that really both the meaning of the actions and the animations disturbed me, so I find it incredible that many people say it is for children, if I had seen this as a child I would be traumatized, haha, even watching it now I was quite impressed.

   Something impressive that is undoubtedly to admire, is the animation, this film is made with the technique of "Stop motion" (animation in volume) that for those who do not know what it is, in a simple way it is based on appearing the movement of static objects with the help of many still images, which generates a kind of very interesting animation and in this movie the animation is really a delight, everything seems incredible to me, all the work that this would entail must have been a lot, but considering how great everything looks, I'm sure that for them it was totally worth it, for me as a spectator it was without a doubt.

   Existen algunas películas que muchas personas las tienen como una joya o un clásico que todos deberían haber visto al menos una vez y me pasaba que muchas personas hablaban de una película en específico y sentía que todos la habían visto menos yo, por lo que me día a la tarea de tomarme un día para verla y ver qué tan buena era y ése día ha llegado, por lo que el día de hoy queridos amigos de la comunidad, quiero hablarles sobre la película llamada “Coraline y la puerta secreta”, película que muchas personas conocen muy bien pero es mí primera vez viéndola, así que, comencemos.

   Esta película estrenada en el 6 de febrero del año 2009 es una película infantil (cosa de la que quiero hablar más adelante) combinada con fantasía, drama y terror que nos cuenta una historia muy interesante, donde nuestra protagonista llamada Coraline luego de mudarse a una nueva casa descubre una especie de puerta secreta y que al traspasarla, ella entra en una realidad alterna con cambios bastante notables, pero con muchas coincidencias con su verdadera realidad al mismo tiempo, despertando así la curiosidad de ella una vez que descubre aquellas diferencias. Hablemos más a profundidad de la película.

   La película comienza con una introducción bastante interesante, podemos apreciar una muñeca entrando por una ventana y luego es desarmada por unas manos un tanto escalofriantes construidas por agujas, una vez que la muñeca está completamente irreconocible, vuelve a armarla, pero en esta oportunidad, la muñeca tiene una nueva apariencia y luego sale nuevamente por la ventana, terminando así con la introducción a la película. Lo siguiente que apreciamos es una mudanza, al parecer una nueva familia ha llegado a esta nueva casa (que de nueva no tiene nada honestamente) y es cuando conocemos a nuestra protagonista, Coraline.

   Coraline es una chica aventurara e inquieta, por lo que sale de casa para buscar un pozo y vemos un gato que parece seguirle, además que más adelante se cruza con un chico que parecía estarle observando también, él le cuenta un poco sobre el pozo y donde se encuentra (justo debajo de ella) hablan un poco y se despiden. Ya en casa, descubrimos que la madre de Coraline casi no le presta atención por estar tan sumergida en el trabajo, cosa que a Coraline le afecta claramente, ya que también su padre se encuentra en la misma situación, muy ocupado con el trabajo como para pasar tiempo con ella.

   El chico al que conoció antes deja un paquete para Coraline, dentro hay una muñeca que se parece mucho a ella, desde su color de cabello, hasta la ropa que utiliza y asegura que es una muñeca que le pertenece a su abuela y tiene muchos años con ella. Para mantener a Coraline entretenida, su padre le pide que investigue la casa, Coraline lo hace mientras ella lleva a su pequeña muñeca a todos lados, hasta que encuentra una pequeña puerta, le pide a su madre que la abra y ella lo hace sólo para que Coraline haga silencio, pero detrás de la puerta no hay nada, está tapada con ladrillos.

   Cuando Coraline va a dormir, le despierta un pequeño ruido y cuando descubre de dónde proviene, es un pequeño roedor saltarín, el cual se esconde detrás de la puerta que ella descubrió, pero esta vez no estaba llena de ladrillos, había una especie de camino, por lo que Coraline decide entrar, una vez que sale por el otro extremo, lo hace en su misma casa o al menos eso cree, pero aquí se encuentra con una realidad alterna, donde también está su madre (aunque no su madre real) pero con unos botones en lugar de ojos, quien la trata mejor que su verdadera madre y también tiene un padre , quien también tiene botones en lugar de ojos, quienes realmente se preocupan por ella, pero una vez se queda dormida, aparece de nuevo en su realidad ¿habrá sido todo un sueño o realmente sucedió?

   A partir de aquí quiero hablarles sólo de mi opinión, empezando por la historia, me pareció muy interesante el hecho de crear una realidad alterna donde las cosas sean bastante similares a la del mundo real, generando así una especie de comparación entre aquello que es real y lo que no, de igual manera de lo que es bueno y lo que no, pero lo que más me cautivó fue lo profundo de la historia, porque aunque esté disfrazado de una animación y muchos consideren que eso sólo sirve para contar historias infantiles y no hay nada más lejos de la realidad, me parece una historia bastante completa y que según la edad con que veas la película, entenderás distintas cosas y esto me parece muy bueno, permite disfrutar a cualquiera con esta película.

   Algo que me parece muy importante de hablar, es el hecho de que Coraline se promociona como una película infantil y si les soy honesto, siento que de infantil no tiene nada, claramente si la ves desde la perspectiva de un niño puede ser inocente, pero considero que si la ves como un adulto, tiene una historia bastante profunda, triste y un tanto perturbadora, hasta podría decir que me ha dado más miedo esta película que cualquier otra película de terror actuales para mayores de 18 años, es que realmente tanto el significado de las acciones como las animaciones me perturbaron, por lo que me parece increíble que muchas personas digan que es para niños, si yo fuese visto esto de pequeño me traumaba, jaja, hasta viéndola ahora me dejó bastante impresionado.

   El desarrollo de la película me pareció espectacular, porque comienza como una película bastante sencilla, que poco a poco va mostrando indicios de lo que realmente se avecina, hasta que llega a un punto en que me hizo sentir que estaba viendo una película completamente diferente, porque el punto en que esto sucedía y el comienzo de la película eran muy distintos, pero me pareció impresionante también, porque es una manera de llevarte por un camino a ciegas, luego quitarte la venda y ver todo de golpe, también por esto considero que no es una película para niños que digamos, jaja, pero ya esto es más a gusto de cualquiera.

   Algo impresionante que sin dudas es de admirar, es la animación, esta película está realizada con la técnica del “Stop motion”(animación en volumen) que para quien no sepa lo que es, de manera sencilla se basa en aparentar el movimiento de objetos estáticos con la ayuda de muchas imágenes fijas, lo que genera una especie de animación muy interesante y en esta película realmente que la animación es una delicia, todo me parece increíble, todo el trabajo que esto conllevaría debió ser mucho, pero considerando lo genial que se ve todo, estoy seguro que para ellos valió totalmente la pena, para mí como espectador lo fue sin dudas.

   Finalizo diciendo que realmente es una película impresionante en todo sentido, disfruté mucho con ella y también me hizo sentir incómodo en el buen sentido, porque es una película de terror aún cuando el terror está en el mensaje dentro de ella (y también en algunas escenas), por lo que si no han tenido la oportunidad de verla, se las recomiendo, yo la disfruté a mis 26 años de edad, por lo que diría que es muy buena para verla en cualquier edad que tengas y esto es algo que no todas las películas pueden lograr. In fractions of a second tragedies happen; they are induced to drugs, kidnapped and change their eyes for buttons, stealing their souls. He who wants to understand, let him understand.

   This film scared the crap out of me and even more so when I got information that the author of the book says it's a true life story and that as a child he saw the baby with the black button eyes. OMG, that's creepy. I feel that if the parents of the child protagonist had had a little time for her, shared their games and hobbies, this would not have happened. It was her need for love and understanding that led her to this other world. She searched for what she lacked in her real world.

   Some paranormal researchers point out that houses can absorb negative energies and vibrations, which allow the creation of bridges, where disembodied spirits usually leave because they were left wandering between worlds. Most people do not believe in these phenomena. However, in this film it is embodied and Coraline manages to find a door that allows her to enter this world where the beings had black buttons baked in their eyes.

   Human beings are curious, some more than others. In this film the cute little girl, almost a teenager, is introverted like most, shy and moody. She lives in her own world, very loveless, lonely and annoyed. This makes her very curious, and this is what they use in the unreal world to lure and cajole her, as my grandmother Bertita's used to say. From my point of view the parents are to blame for everything that happens, but I am not going to tell you about it. I can only tell you that it is an animated horror film.

   Coraline was released in 2009, under the direction of American director Henry Selick. It is an animated, fantasy and horror film. It was based on the book by British writer Neil Richard Gaiman, published in 2002. It was produced by the animation studio LAIKA. The film's soundtrack is by Frenchman, Bruno Coulais. OMG, all the melodies are chilling.

   From the beginning of the movie the suspense started and I was so nervous that I was biting my nails. These days off for Easter I found it by chance, I watched it again after 14 years and I felt just as anxious. Of the songs on the Coraline album, the most terrifying is "Coraline, End Credits", the composer is James Horner. I leave them here to scare you a little bit.

   Quizás nadie lo crea o pensarán que son cuentos de camino como se suele decir; sin embargo, es una realidad. A través de los ojos percibimos y nos conectamos con el mundo. El sentido de la vista es más que eso, si lo deseamos se pueden ver cosas inimaginables y mágicas. Tenemos que ser cautelosos con la mirada; ya que puede traicionar y delatar los sentimientos y emociones. El amor, pasión, amistad, odio, maldad y también la traición se pueden decir con los ojos. De que los ojos hablan, sí, y dicen mucho sobre ti.

   Como dijo Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer en su Rima XXIII: “en una mirada, un mundo…” Ningún sentimiento escapa porque los ojos son unos delatores y es una de las razones por las cuales el amor, la mentira y el odio no se pueden ocultar. Sí, amigos de #Hive, los ojos esconden lo que realmente sentimos y lo que somos. En la película Coraline, los botones negros sustituyendo los ojos me impactaron y me aterrorizaron. Este simbolismo de que era un mundo sin alma, sin sentimientos y falta de vida.

   El tema fundamental planteado es como los niños tienen que enfrentarse a cambios y a los adultos ni siquiera les preocupa lo que les suceda. Son incapaces de comunicarse y de preguntarles cómo se sienten. Por otro lado, los padres no toman en cuenta lo que les dicen los niños y por esta razón suceden los problemas. No lo entiendo, quizás es porque no soy una persona escéptica. Sé qué pueden suceder cosas que no entendemos, irreales, de fantasía e inexplicables que es muy difícil aceptar, pero algunas veces no es así.

   Lo místico era aceptado por nuestros ancestros; protegían a los niños desde que nacían, les ponían azabaches, pionías, y dijes de protección. Creo en la existencia de hadas, duendes, otros mundos y solo nos separa una pequeña línea imperceptible. Y los niños con su intuición pueden captar, tener amigos imaginarios e ingresar en ellos. Mi madre insistía en que había seres de los cuales está prohibido hablar, ni decir su nombre porque se puede traer a nuestro mundo. Después era muy peligroso porque no se sabe cómo devolverlos.

   La mami y el papi de Coraline, como todos los padres que se respetan, no le hacen caso, y cada quien vive en su mundo. En primer lugar, la llevan a una ciudad donde no conoce a nadie, ni sus costumbres y ni siquiera se ponen a pensar si esto es conveniente. Me hizo evocar mi infancia, yo era muy curiosa y fastidiosa, mi abuelita Bertita’s para no responderme lo que yo quería saber me mandaba a ver si el gallo puso. Con ella yo pasaba casi todo el día en su casa mientras mis padres trabajaban.

   Coraline, como toda niña que se respeta, sale de curiosa a explorar y no sabe qué va a encontrar. Esto me dio mucha impresión porque así es que suceden las cosas, los padres están alejados de todo esto y ni les importa. No levantan sus ojos de lo que están haciendo para prestarle atención a sus hijos y estos se crían solos, exponiéndose a muchos peligros. En fracciones de segundo ocurren las tragedias; los inducen a las drogas, secuestran y cambian sus ojos por botones robándoles sus almas. El que quiera entender, que entienda.

   Este filme me dio mucho miedo y más aún cuando tuve información de que el autor del libro dice que es una historia de la vida real y que cuando era niño vio al bebé con los ojos de botones negros. OMG, es espeluznante. Considero que si los padres de la niña protagonista hubiesen tenido un poco de tiempo para ella, compartieran sus juegos y aficiones, esto no hubiese sucedido. Su necesidad de amor y de comprensión fue la que la llevo a ese otro mundo. Buscó lo que le faltaba en su mundo real.

   Algunos investigadores sobre casos paranormales señalan que las casas pueden absorber energías y vibraciones negativas, lo que permiten crear puentes, por donde generalmente los espíritus desencarnados salen porque se quedaron vagando entre los mundos. La mayoría de las personas no creen en estos fenómenos. Sin embargo, en este filme se plasma y Coraline logra encontrar una puerta que le permite entrar a este mundo donde los seres tenían botones negros cocidos en los ojos.

   El ser humano es curioso, algunos más que otros. En esta película la linda niña, casi un adolescente, es introvertida como la mayoría, tímida y malhumorada. Vive en su propio mundo, con mucha carencia de amor, sola y fastidiada. Esto hace que sea muy curiosa, y de esto se valen en el mundo irreal para atraerla y engatusarla, como decía mi abuelita Bertita’s. Desde mi punto de vista son los padres los culpables de todo lo que acontece, pero no se las voy a contar. Solo les puedo decir que es un filme animado de terror.

   Coraline fue estrenada en el año 2009, bajo la dirección de estadounidense Henry Selick. Es un filme animado, de fantasía y terror. Se basó en el libro del escritor británico Neil Richard Gaiman, publicado en el año 2002. Fue producida por el estudio de animación LAIKA. La banda sonora de la película es del francés, Bruno Coulais. OMG, todas las melodías son escalofriantes.

   Desde que inició la película comenzó el suspenso y estaba tan nerviosa que me comí las uñas. Estos días de asueto por la Semana Santa la encontré por casualidad, volví a verla después de 14 años y me sentí igual de ansiosa. De las canciones del álbum Coraline, las más terroríficas es “Coraline, End Credits”, el compositor es James Horner. Se las dejo para que se asusten un poquito.

   Hello, hello dear cinephile friends! I hope you are very well and that you have a good weekend, today I want to share with you "Coraline" a movie from 2009 that I really like which I had not seen for a long time but that this morning I had the opportunity to see it again, I hope you like.

   ¡Hola, hola queridos amigos cinéfilos! Espero que estén muy bien y que tengan un buen fin de semana, hoy quiero compartir con ustedes "Coraline" una película del año 2009 que me gusta mucho la cual tenía tiempo sin ver pero que hoy en la mañana tuve la oportunidad de volver a verla, espero les guste.

   

   Plot / Trama

   Coraline Jones and her parents move into a huge house called the Pink Palace. Coraline is a very curious girl to whom her parents do not pay attention and she is an only child. Exploring, she discovers an old well where she meets the grandson of the owner of the house named Wybie and his black cat, this boy tells her that he is surprised because his grandmother does not usually rent to families with children and he was about to tell her why but before he could do so, his grandmother calls him and takes him away. One day Coraline's father tells her to explore the house and write down everything she sees, and during that walk Coraline discovers a small door, which she asks her mother to open but when they dopen they only discover a brick wall, so her mother assumes that they closed it when they divided the house but one night Coraline follows a mouse which goes to the small door, and this time when she opens it Coraline discovers that the brick wall has disappeared and that in its place there is a colorful tunnel which she decides to go through, to find herself back in his room.

   Coraline Jones y sus padres se van a vivir a una enorme casa llamada el Palacio Rosa. Coraline es una niña muy curiosa a la cual sus padres no le prestan atención y es hija única. Explorando, ella descubre un pozo antiguo en donde conoce al nieto de la dueña de la casa llamado Wybie y a su gato negro, este chico le dice que está sorprendido porque su abuela no suele rentar a familias con niños y se disponía a contarle es porqué pero antes de que pudiera hacerlo, su abuela lo llama y se lo lleva. Un dia el padre de Coraline le dice que explore la casa y anote todo lo que vea, y durante ese paseo Coraline descubre una pequeña puerta, la cual le pide a su mamá que la abra pero cuando la abren solamente descubren un muro de ladrillos, por lo que su madre supone que la cerraron cuando dividieron la casa pero una noche Coraline sigue a un ratón el cual se dirige hacía la pequeña puerta, y esta vez al abrirla Coraline descubre que la pared de ladrillos ha desaparecido y que en su lugar hay un túnel colorido el cual decide atravesar, para encontrarse nuevamente en su sala.

After her dinner her other parents take her to a beautiful bedroom, but when she wakes up she discovers that it was all a dream and that she is back in her real house. When Coraline tells her mother, she does not believe her, however, she gives her permission to visit two retired acrobats who warn her of serious danger. Back at her house, Coraline meets Wybie again, who tells her that he is forbidden to enter the house, and that his grandmother had a sister who was kidnapped.

   Al entrar a la cocina se consigue con su madre pero al girarse ella, Coraline descubre que tiene botones cosidos en los ojos por lo que se sorprende, pero la mujer se presenta como su otra madre y le pide que vaya a buscar a su otro padre. Cuando lo consigue, este le canta una canción con el piano el cual maneja con guantes mecánicos y luego van a cenar. Durante la cena Coraline descubre que la comida es muy sabrosa y que también sus padres están al pendiente de ella. Luego de la cena sus otros padres la llevan a un hermoso dormitorio, pero cuando despierta descubre que todo fué un sueño y que está de vuelta en su verdadera casa. Cuando Coraline le cuenta a su madre, esta no le cree sin embargo, le da permiso de vistar a dos acróbatas retiradas las cuales le advierten de un grave peligro. De regreso en su casa Coraline se encuentra de nuevo con Wybie el cual le cuenta que tiene prohibido entrar a la casa, y que su abuela tenía una hermana la cual fue secuestrada.

   Coraline is guided again by the mice to the other world where she discovers that the other father has planted a garden with her face and that the other mother was invited to a mouse circus and that the other Wybie will accompany her, so Coraline also decide to go. She notices that the other Wybie has his mouth sewn shut and doesn't say anything. After the circus she Coraline goes to her room and returns back to her world, but when she goes to the door she realizes that it is locked and that the key is missing. Coraline complains to her mother because she closed the door and hid the key but her mother tells her that she did it because she found rat feces, so when Coraline returns home she gets the key and when she opens the door she discovers the tunnel and the another world is real. Once inside, Wybie's cat is found, which in that other world can speak and tells her that he can come and go as he pleases, also the other parents propose to stay forever but she refuses and goes to sleep but When he wakes up he discovers that he is still in the other world. Coraline tries to leave that world, but in the middle of an argument with the other mother in which Coraline tells her that she is not her mother, the other mother transforms into a witch, and locks her in a mirror in which she meets to the ghosts of 3 children who tell him that the other mother ate their lives through their eyes and that they need to get them back so that their souls can be freed.

   Coraline es guiada nuevamente por los ratones hacía el otro mundo en donde descubre que el otro padre ha plantado un jardín con su cara y que la otra madre fué invitada a un circo de ratones y que la acompañará el otro Wybie, por lo que Coraline también decide ir. Ella se da cuenta que el otro Wybie tiene la boca cosida y no dice nada. Luego del circo Coraline va a su habitación y regresa de nuevo a su mundo, pero cuando va hacia la puerta se da cuenta de que está cerrada con llave y que la llave desapareció. Coraline le reclama a su madre porque cerró la puerta y escondió la llave pero su madre le dice que lo hizo porque encontró heces de rata, así que cuando Coraline regresa a su casa consigue la llave y cuando abre la puerta descubre el túnel y que el otro mundo es real. Una vez adentro se consigue al gato de Wybie el cual en ese otro mundo el puede hablar y le dice que el puede ir y venir a su antojo, también los otros padres le proponen quedarse para siempre pero ella se niega y se va a dormir pero, al despertar descubre que todavía se encuentra en el otro mundo. Coraline trata de irse de ese mundo, pero en medio de una discusión con la otra madre en laque Coraline le dice a ella que no es su madre, la otra madre se transforma en una bruja, y la encierra en un espejo en el que conoce a los fantasmas de 3 niños que le cuentan que la otra madre se comió sus vidas a través de sus ojos y que necesitan recuperarlos para que sus almas sean liberadas.

Coraline busca los ojos de los 3 niños en el jardín, el espectáculo del circo y el teatro de las otras Spink y Forcible utilizando un aparato que les dió las Spink y Forcible de su mundo, primero va al jardín en el que el otro padre logra liberarse del control de la otra madre y le entrega los ojos de uno de los niños antes de ahogarse en el fondo del lago, el niño que recupera sus ojos le agradece y le dice que se de prisa de encontrar los demás porque su tiempo se está acabando. También descubre que posiblemente el otro Wybie fué desintegrado por la otra madre.

Otra madre ha tomado la forma de una araña y le dice a Coraline que trajo a una plaga refiriéndose al gato. La dueñade los ojos que recuperó aparece y le advierte que aunque gane el juego, de igual manera la otra madre no la dejará marcharse, así que usa su inteligencia para derrotarla lanzándole el gato y dejándola ciega y logra recuperar la llave de la puerta, el gato logra escapar primero y Coraline también. Cuando Coraline llega de nuevo a su mundo encuentra a sus verdaderos padres entrando a su casa sin recuerdos del secuestro.A la hora de dormir la madre de Coraline le da un obsequio a ella, también el gato aparece y Coraline se disculpa con el por haberlo lanzado a la otra madre, el gato la perdona y se deja acariciar por ella. En un sueño los niños fantasmas le advierten que todavía corre peligro mientras conserve la llave, así que se despierta y se dispone a botar la llave en el pozo de la casa el cual no está presente en el otro mundo.

   Cuando se dispone a tirar la llave, Coraline es atacada por el brazo mecánico de la otra madre el cual se había quedado en el túnel la puerta entre ambos mundos, pero Wybie interviene y la ayuda, luego de forzajear Coraline y Wybie logran tirar la llave y el brazo al pozo y lo cierran. Wybie se disculpa con Coraline por no creerle al principio. Luego se revela en una foto que la niña fantasma es la hermana perdida de la dueña de la casa y abuela de Wybie, la pelicula termina con el gato durmiendo en un letrero y desaparece, entrando de nuevo al otro mundo.

   My Opinion / Mi Opinión

   It is one of the best movies I have seen, I really like the style which gives me Tim Burton vibes, the director is Henry Selick who also through the stop motion animation technique managed to create this masterpiece whose result is incredible. The voice cast is quite good as each performer gives a great personal touch to the character she plays, especially Dakota Fanning who voiced Coraline. My favorite character is the cat who seems mysterious to me because he can enter both worlds at will and is not afraid of the other mother.

   Es una de las mejores películas que he visto, me gusta mucho el estilo el cual me dan vibes del estilo de Tim Burton, el director es Henry Selick el cual también a través de la técnica de animación stop motion logró crear esta obra maestra cuyo resultado es increible. El elenco de voces es bastante bueno ya que cada interprete le da un gran toque personal al personaje que interpreta, en especial Dakota Fanning la cual le puso voz a Coraline.    The photography is really excellent, and also the color palette which works perfectly with each setting. The stop motion technique is quite laborious since you have to take a number of photographs to make every second of the film (in fact, in my university career I had the opportunity to learn this technique and they showed us how to make every second you need to take 20 photographs) so making a film like this requires a lot of time and a large number of personnel who must be very aware of each shot so that large jumps in the animation are not visualized, so I always value this type of films since the result is always incredible and it is a job worth doing.

   La fotografía es realmente excelente, y también la paleta de colores la cual funciona a la prefección con cada escenario. La técnica de stop motion es bastante laboriosa ya que hay que tomar una cantidad de fotografías para lograr hacer cada segundo de la película (de hecho en mi carrera universitaria tuve la oportunidad de aprender esta técnica y nos mostraron como para hacer cada segundo hacen falta tomar 20 fotografías) por lo que hacer una película como esta se requiere de mucho tiempo y gran cantidad de personal el cual debe estar muy al pendiente de cada toma para que no se visualicen grandes saltos en la animación, por lo que siempre valoro este tipo de películas ya que el resultado siempre es increíble y es un trabajo que vale la pena hacer.

   The story in general is quite entertaining, I understand that this film is based on the book written by Neil Gaiman which I have not yet had the opportunity to read, however it makes me very curious since I would like to know how faithful the film is to the book hahaha and also the script seems very good to me since one does not lose any detail about everything that happens in the film and personally the first time I saw it I was hooked. The soundtrack also gives a great touch to the movie and I like it a lot, it is totally different from other movies by including instrumental themes and short vocal contributions (in fact the actress Teri Hatcher who is the voice actress of the mother of Coraline and also the other mother lent her voice for the soundtrack too). Something I also like are the messages they convey to the viewers, among them the most important of all "Not everyone who is nice is really a good person and has good intentions" which is important for children to know. So in my opinion, it's an amazing movie that everyone should see so I would like to recommend it to everyone who hasn't seen it yet, I assure you that you won't regret watching it.

   La historia en general es bastante entretenida, tengo entendido que esta película se basa en el libro escrito por Neil Gaiman el cual todavía no he tenido la oportunidad de leerlo, sin embargo me da mucha curiosidad ya que me gustaría saber que tan fiel es la película al libro jajaja y también el guión me parece muy bueno ya que uno no pierde ningún detalle acerca de todo lo que pasa en la película y yo en lo personal la primera vez que la vi me quedé enganchada. El soundtrack también le da un gran toque a la película y me gusta mucho, es totalmente diferente a los de otras peliculas al incluir temas instrumentales y con contribuciones vocales cortas (de hecho la actriz Teri Hatcher la cual es la actriz de doblaje de la madre de Coraline y también la otra madre prestó su voz para el soundtrack también). Algo que me gusta también son los mensajes que transmiten a los espectadores, entre ellos el más importante de todos "No todo el mundo que se muestra amable realmente es buena persona y tiene buenas intenciones" lo cual es importante que los niños sepan. Así que en mi opinión, es una película increible que todos deberían ver así que me gustaría recomendarla a todos los que todavía no la han visto, les aseguro que no se arrepentirán de verla.

   Esta es una película de que niños nos daba terror ver, o por lo menos a la gran mayoría, la historia consiste en que una niña consigue una puerta secreta a otro mundo (su realidad alterna) en donde todo parece ser mejor que en su vida, sus amigos, sus papás todos se comportan de la mejor manera, pero todo puede ser Perfecto…

   Coraline es una niña que se acaba de mudar Michigan a Oregón, por lo que deja su vida allá, extraña a sus amigos y sus papás se la viven trabajando, con ganas de salir un poco de d estrés de sus padres conoce a su vecino Wybie, este desea ser su amigo, pero es bastante pesado o así lo considera ella.

   conoce a sus vecinas, dos extrañas actrices inglesas llamadas Srta. Spink y Srta. Forcible y si otro vecino que es un extraño ruso Sr. Bobinsky, por lo que Coraline cada vez duda más de su nueva casa y que alfo no está normal.

   Sin querer encuentra una peculiar pierda pequeña, en donde encuentra un túnel que la lleva a otra dimensión, es todo como en su casa pero más vivo, más Perfecto, están sus padres pero estos si le prestan atención y viven por ella, solo por un pequeño detalle, estos en vez de ojos tienen dos botones.

   Coraline disfruta mucho de este mundo, cada que duerme se despierta en su casa, y todo a la normalidad, al principio piensa que es un sueño, ya que al día siguiente le dice a su madre y detrás de la puerta no hay nada.

   Pero todas las noches bajaba e iba con su “otra madre” y era feliz, hasta que se empieza a poner todo raro, se empieza a dar cuenta que algo no funciona en el otro lado y que en su mundo también comenzaban a pasar cosas extrañas, hasta que la madre le pide que para quedarse se tiene que coser dos botones como ojos.

   Ella se consigue con los fantasmas de los niños al que les quito los ojos, y ahí empieza a idear un plan de cómo salvarse y salvarlos a todos.

   Al final aparentemente Coraline logra salvarse y vuelve con su familia, todo mejora un poco y ya son felices, perooo, hay muchas teorías en los que nos dan a entender que ella nunca salió, que nunca se libró de la otra madre y que en realidad está en su mundo.

   La otra madre es muy poderosa, ya que se ha logrado convertir en la madre de Coraline sin necesidad de que se vean sus ojos de botones, el otro lado tiene es un mundo de diferentes capas y portales por lo que Coraline sin darse cuenta pudo quedar atrapada allá.

   Y obviamente la más notoria que es la desaparición del gato al final, cualidad que solo posee en el otro mundo, aunque también podría decirse que es algo al estilo de Abracadabra que el gato no podía descansar hasta la muerte de la bruja.

    I once saw this movie, but my memory was so vague that I wanted to see it again - sometime - as if it were the first time. After seeing Fantastic Mr. Fox a few weeks ago I started to remember what other stop motion movies I had seen and I remembered this story so I watched it again so I could tell you about it.

    Alguna vez vi esta película, pero mi recuerdo era tan vago que quise volver a verla - en alguna oportunidad - como si fuera la primera vez. Después de haber visto Fantastic Mr. Fox hace algunas semanas comencé a recordar qué otras películas realizadas en stop motion había visto y recordé esta historia, así que la vi de nuevo para poder comentárselas.

    Coraline is an American animated film written and directed by Henry Selick, based on the homonymous novel by Neil Gaiman, author of Good Omens and Stardust among many other well-known titles, and tells the story of a girl, Coraline Jones, who moves with her parents to a new house where she discovers a small door that seems to have some kind of connection with another world. The curious thing about this other place is that it's exactly the same as the house in which she lives. Or well, almost.     After the opening scene of the doll, the story seems like a children's story: a girl neglected by her parents suddenly finds herself in a huge house that she begins to explore, along with her surroundings, and discovers a secret door that leads her to another place (another dimension? another universe?), but little by little it becomes a creepy story. Her other parents and her neighbors are interesting and strange characters, sometimes funny, sometimes terrifying and in the moment that Coraline seems to be trapped in that other place and when she manages to converse with ghosts of children who do not even remember her name, it's understood that place is haunted, to say the least. Because the truth is that there are particular elements that make one think that Coraline is not in this world: the doll, the bony hands, the ghosts, the medal of her neighbor Mr. Bobinsky (which seems to be one of those given to the liquidators of Chernobyl), the gloomy atmosphere that surrounds the house, the fog, the almost leafless trees and especially the reference that in a casual conversation, her mother drops pointing out that, while they were coming to the house, they had an accident.

    Después de la escena de apertura de la muñeca, la historia parece una narración infantil: una niña desatendida por sus padres se encuentra de pronto en una casa enorme que comienza a explorar, junto con sus alrededores, y descubre una puerta secreta que la lleva a otro lugar (¿otra dimensión? ¿otro universo?), pero poco a poco se va convirtiendo en una historia espeluznante. Sus otros padres y su vecinos son personajes interesantes y extraños, a veces divertidos, a veces terroríficos y en el momento en que Coraline parece quedar atrapada en ese otro lugar y cuando logra conversar con fantasmas de niños que ni siquiera recuerdan su nombre, se entiende que ese lugar está embrujado, por decir menos. Porque la verdad es que hay elementos particulares que hacen pensar que Coraline no está en este mundo: la muñeca, las manos huesudas, los fantasmas, la medalla de su vecino el señor Bobinsky (que parece ser una de las entregadas a los liquidadores de Chernóbil), la atmósfera lúgubre que rodea la casa, la niebla, los árboles casi sin hojas y en especial la referencia que en una conversación casual, deja caer su madre señalando que, mientras venían a la casa, tuvieron un accidente.

    Talking with several people who have seen this film, I was able to learn about different hypotheses that range from the possibility that this house is a kind of afterlife, a place where one must prepare for the passage to the other side (perhaps for that reason the change in the garden at the end), to the mere fantasy of a haunted house or a girl with an overflowing imagination. The truth is that, in my opinion, whatever the case, it is not a children's film. Despite the flashy animation, the film has scenes that can terrify the little ones and disturbing elements that make even the biggest ones uncomfortable. It also deals with, or rather suggests, the theme of death from a more complex perspective (in Coco, for example, this theme is more accessible), so I think that despite the secret door, the cat, the doll, Coraline is not a movie I would recommend for a child.

    Conversando con varias personas que han visto esta película, pude conocer diferentes hipótesis que van desde la posibilidad de que esa casa sea una especie de afterlife, un lugar en el que debe uno prepararse para el paso hacia el otro lado (quizás por eso el cambio en el jardín al final), hasta la mera fantasía de una casa embrujada o una niña con una imaginación desbordada. Lo cierto es que, en mi opinión, sea cual sea el caso no es una película para niños. A pesar de la llamativa animación, la película tiene escenas que pueden aterrorizar a los más pequeños y elementos perturbadores que incomodan incluso a los más grandes. Además trata, o sugiere más bien, el tema de la muerte desde una perspectiva más compleja (en Coco, por ejemplo, este tema es más accesible), entonces creo que a pesar de la puerta secreta, del gato, de la muñeca, Coraline no es una película que recomendaría para un niño.

    Apart from that, I thought it was a good film, intriguing, with great animation by Laika studios (it was their first film), the same company that later brought us Kubo and the two strings, the music is very good and I think that a movie that makes you think after it's over, that makes you feel the need to watch it again to evaluate the different possibilities, all being more or less valid, is motivating. That ambiguity in certain scenes and the polysemy of some elements are a factor that I like to find in cinema and literature. And you, have you seen this movie? what is your theory about the story?

    Al margen de eso, me pareció una buena película, intrigante, con una gran animación a cargo de los estudios Laika (fue su primera película), la misma compañía que nos trajo luego Kubo and the two strings, la música es muy buena y creo que una película que te hace pensar después de terminada, que te hace sentir la necesidad de verla de nuevo para evaluar las diferentes posibilidades, siendo todas más o menos válidas, es motivadora. Esa ambigüedad en ciertas escenas y la polisemia de algunos elementos son un factor que me gusta encontrar en el cine y en la literatura. Y ustedes, ¿han visto esta película? ¿cuál es su teoría sobre la historia?

    Aún está en discusión si el libro es para niños o no, y siento que honestamente toda esa discusión le quita protagonismo a la obra de arte que es el libro en sí, independientemente de a que publico pertenece.

    It's still under discussion whether the book is for children or not, and I honestly feel that all this discussion takes away from the work of art that is the book itself, independently of which audience it belongs to.

    La inspiración para dicha obra por parte de Gaiman, según él, se debió a un suceso bastante hórrido que ocurrió en Hampshire, Reino Unido, lugar de procedencia del autor.

    Gaiman's inspiration for this work, as he says, was due to a rather horrific event that occurred in Hampshire, United Kingdom, where the author is from.

    En aquél pueblo vivía una anciana que estaba a cargo del cuidado de su nieta, tras la muerte de su hijo y nuera en un incendio en el cual, solo se salvó la niña.

    In that town lived an old woman who was in charge of her granddaughter's care, after the death of her son and daughter-in-law in a fire in which only the girl was saved.

    Con el paso de los años, los pobladores expresaban entre sí su preocupación, ya que la niña nunca salía a jugar con otros niños. Se descubrió poco después que la anciana la mantenía encerrada en la casa para que nadie la viera y que por eso, tampoco permitía a nadie acercarse, también se empezó a rumorear que era porque en el incendio, la niña había quedado desfigurada.

    As the years went by, the villagers expressed their concern among themselves because the girl never went out to play with other children. It was discovered shortly after that the old woman kept her locked up in the house, so that no one would see her and for that reason, she didn't allow anyone to go near her, it was also rumored that it was because in the fire, the girl had been disfigured.

    Coraline and the secret door tells the story of the Jones family, composed of Mel, Charles and their daughter Coraline, who move to a new town and a new house. Both parents are always busy thanks to their jobs, and despite working at home, their daughter feels their absence due to the little attention she receives from both of them. There she hears her mother's voice and when she reaches the kitchen, she realizes that the woman cooking dinner is not exactly her mother, although she has the same voice.

    En ese mundo también hay una versión de su padre y sus vecinos, todos mucho más interesantes y divertidos. «los otros padres» son atentos con Coraline, la tratan muy bien y «la otra madre» le hace cenas muy sabrosas. Sin embargo, al final de todo, le pide a «su hija» que se quede en ese mundo y que se cosa botones en los ojos. Intuyendo que claramente esa no es una buena idea, Coraline le pide que la deje volver a su mundo, y así lo hace pues, la bruja la deja ir.

    In that world there is also a version of her father and her neighbors, all much more interesting and fun. "the other parents" are attentive to Coraline, treat her very well and "the other mother" makes her very tasty dinners. However, at the end of it all, she asks Coraline to stay in that world and sew buttons to her eyes. Sensing that this is clearly not a good idea, Coralie asks her to let her go back to her world and so she does.

    El asunto es que la bruja secuestró a los padres de Coraline y ésta pasa dos días sin ellos, sintiendo aún más el vacío y dándose cuenta de que aunque ellos estuvieran muy ocupados, la ausencia de ellos es aun más desoladora e insoportable. Coraline, con ayuda de un gato que pertenece a su mundo (y que en el otro puede hablar) decide volver por sus padres, jugando un peligroso juego con la bruja y ganando la contienda.

    The thing is that the witch kidnapped Coraline's parents and Coraline spends two days without them, feeling even more the emptiness and realizing that even if they were very busy, their absence is even more desolate and unbearable. Coraline, with the help of a cat that belongs to her world (and that in the other world can speak) decides to return for her parents, playing a dangerous game with the witch and winning the contest.

    

    Ciertamente, lo que acabo de hacer es un super resumen de todo el libro, pero hay puntos que quiero resaltar respecto a la narración, el trasfondo y una pequeña comparación con la película:

    Admittedly, what I have just done is a super summary of the whole book, but there are points I want to highlight regarding the narrative, the background and a small comparison with the movie:

    El libro está narrado desde el punto de vista de Coraline, y eso nos permite comprender como piensa la niña, y en todo momento nos sentimos tan descuidados, aburridos y taciturnos como ella. Esto me parece un punto a favor del autor ya que, nos transmite a cabalidad esos sentimientos negativos que acompañan a la protagonista, producto de la ausencia de sus padres porque, aunque es cierto que trabajan desde casa, le prestan muy poca atención y para colmo, en su nuevo hogar no hay niños cerca con los que pueda jugar.

    The book is narrated from Coraline's point of view, and that allows us to observe how the girl thinks, and at all times we feel as neglected, bored and taciturn as she is. This seems to me to be a point in favor of the author because, it fully conveys those negative feelings that accompany the protagonist, product of the absence of her parents because, although it's true that they work from home, they pay very little attention to her and to top it off, in her new home there are no children around to play with.

    Los personajes están muy bien desarrollados, vemos que Mel Jones, por ejemplo, es más «amargada» y estricta, y Charles, más despreocupado y paciente, pero cuando pierde la paciencia es igual de estricto que su esposa.

    The characters are very well developed, we see that Mel Jones, for example, is more "bitter" and strict, and Charles is more carefree and patient, but nevertheless, when he loses his patience is just as strict as his wife.

    En comparación con la película, me gusta más el libro, sin dudas. No digo que la película sea mala, porque me encanta, sino que en comparación, los personajes en la película están menos desarrollados, y hay una escena en particular que resumieron casi por completo y que, honestamente, no debía ser resumida de esa forma porque creo que era la parte más bonita, sublime, además de que deja una buena moraleja en el lector. Un dialogo entre Coraline y el gato hablando sobre la valentía y dice así:

    Compared to the movie, I like the book better, no doubt. I'm not saying that the movie is bad, because I love it, but in comparison, the characters in the movie are less developed, and there is one scene in particular that they summarized almost completely and that, honestly, should not have been summarized that way because I think it was the most beautiful part, sublime, plus it leaves a good moral in the reader. A dialogue between Coraline and the cat talking about bravery and it goes like this:

    —Cuando era pequeña —le contó Coraline al gato—, y vivíamos en nuestra antigua casa, hace muchísimo tiempo, papá me llevó a pasear por el descampado que había entre nuestra casa y las tiendas.

    "When I was a little girl," Coraline told the cat, "and we lived in our old house a long, long time ago, Dad took me for a walk in the open field between our house and the stores".

    »En realidad no era el mejor lugar para pasear. Estaba lleno de cosas que la gente tiraba: cocinas viejas, platos rajados, muñecas sin brazos ni piernas, latas vacías y botellas rotas. Mis padres me hicieron prometer que no iría a explorar por allí porque había muchas cosas cortantes, y por el peligro del tétanos y otras enfermedades.

    "It wasn't really the best place to walk around. It was full of things people threw away: old stoves, cracked plates, dolls without arms and legs, empty cans and broken bottles. My parents made me promise not to go exploring there because there were so many sharp things, and because of the danger of tetanus and other diseases".

    »Pero yo insistía en que quería explorar esa zona. Así que un día mi padre se puso sus grandes botas marrones y sus guantes, y a mí me vistió con botas, pantalones vaqueros y un suéter, y fuimos a dar una vuelta.

    "But I insisted that I wanted to explore that area. So one day my dad put on his big brown boots and gloves, and me he dressed in boots, jeans and a sweater, and we went for a walk".

    »Caminamos durante unos veinte minutos y bajamos por el monte hasta una hondonada en la que había un arroyo. De repente, papá me dijo: "¡Coraline..., escapa monte arriba. Corre!" Lo dijo de forma tan tajante que obedecí inmediatamente. Escapé corriendo. Algo me hizo daño en un brazo, pero no me detuve.

    "We walked for about twenty minutes and down through the bush to a hollow where there was a stream. Suddenly, Dad said to me, "Coraline..., run away up the hill. Run!" He said it so sharply that I obeyed immediately. I ran away. Something hurt my arm, but I didn't stop".

    "When I reached the top of the mountain I heard a very loud noise behind me. It was my father, coming towards me like a rhinoceros. When I got to the top, he took me in his arms and carried me to the edge of the mountain. Then we stopped panting, took a deep breath and gazed out over the gully".

    »El aire estaba plagado de avispas. Seguramente habíamos pisado una colmena oculta en una rama podrida. Mientras yo escapaba a toda prisa, mi padre se quedó para darme tiempo a huir y lo picaron, y además perdió las gafas al correr.

    "The air was riddled with wasps. We had probably stepped on a beehive hidden in a rotten branch. While I was running away in a hurry, my father stayed behind to give me time to flee and got stung, and also lost his glasses while running".

    »Yo sólo tenía una picadura en la parte de atrás del brazo. Él tenía treinta y nueve, por todo el cuerpo. Las contamos en el baño.

    "I only had one sting on the back of my arm. He had thirty-nine, all over his body. We counted them in the bathroom".

    —En fin —continuó la niña—, el caso es que mi padre regresó al descampado para recuperar sus gafas. Dijo que no se había asustado cuando las avispas lo picaron porque estaba concentrado en ayudarme a escapar: sabía que debía darme tiempo para huir; de lo contrario, las avispas nos habrían atacado a los dos.

    "Anyway," the girl continued, "the point is that my father went back to the open field to retrieve his glasses. He said he didn't panic when the wasps stung him because he was concentrating on helping me escape: he knew he had to give me time to get away, otherwise the wasps would have attacked us both".

    Coraline giró la llave y sonó un «clunc» bien fuerte. La puerta se abrió de golpe. Al otro lado no había pared de ladrillos, solo oscuridad. Un viento frío barrió el pasadizo. Coraline no hizo ademán de cruzar la puerta.

    Coraline turned the key and a loud "clunk" sounded. The door burst open. On the other side there was no brick wall, only darkness. A cold wind swept through the passageway. Coraline made no move to cross the door.

    —Y dijo que no había sido valiente quedarse allí para que le picaran las avispas —añadió Coraline—. No fue valiente porque no tenía miedo y además era lo único que podía hacer. Pero regresar después para buscar las gafas, cuando sabía que las avispas estaban allí y se encontraba aterrado... Para eso sí que es necesario tener valor.

    "And he said it wasn't brave to stay there to be stung by the wasps," Coraline added. "It wasn't brave because he wasn't afraid, and besides, it was the only thing he could do.     Coraline dio un paso hacia el oscuro corredor y percibió el característico olor a cerrado, a humedad y a polvo. El gato la acompañó sin hacer el menor ruido.

    Coraline took a step into the dark corridor and smelled the characteristic closed, musty and dusty odor. The cat accompanied her without making the slightest noise.

    —¿Y por qué es necesario tener valor? —le preguntó el gato con tono de indiferencia.

    "And why is it necessary to have courage?" asked the cat in a tone of indifference.

    —Porque, cuando haces algo a pesar del miedo que sientes —respondió ella—, necesitas tener mucho valor.

    "Because when you do something in spite of the fear you feel," she replied, "you need a lot of courage".

    La vela proyectaba enormes sombras parpadeantes y extrañas en la pared. Coraline oyó algo que se movía en la oscuridad, aunque no distinguía bien si estaba junto a ella o a un lado. Parecía como si aquello, fuese lo que fuese, caminara a su paso.

    The candle cast huge, flickering, strange shadows on the wall. Coraline heard something moving in the darkness, though she couldn't quite tell if it was next to her or off to the side. It seemed as if whatever it was was walking in her wake.

    —¿Y por eso vas a regresar al mundo de la otra? —le preguntó de nuevo el gato—. ¿Porque tu padre te salvó de las avispas?

    "And that's why you're going back to the world of the other?" asked the cat again, "Because your father saved you from the wasps?"

    —No seas tonto —le contestó Coraline—. Regreso a buscarlos porque son mis padres. Si ellos descubriesen mi desaparición, estoy segura de que harían lo mismo por mí.

    "Don't be silly," Coraline replied, "I'm going back to look for them because they are my parents. If they found out I was missing, I'm sure they would do the same for me".

    Analizando todo el diálogo y la anécdota de Coraline, notamos que la niña habla de que una vez su padre se «sacrificó» por ella, recibiendo la mayor parte del daño, cosa que a los ojos de ella, demostró el amor que su padre sentía por ella. Es consciente de que, aunque sus padres estaban más enfrascados en su trabajo que en ella, aún así la amaban y momentos como aquél de las avispas, se lo demostraban. Asimismo sabía que por ese amor, sus padres harían hasta lo imposible por rescatarla si la secuestrada fuese ella y debía retribuírselos, rescatándolos de las garras de esa bruja.

    Analyzing all the dialogue and Coraline's anecdote, we notice that the girl talks about how her father once "sacrificed" himself for her, taking the brunt of the damage, which in her eyes, demonstrated the love her father felt for her. She is aware that even though her parents were more focused on their work than on her, they still loved her and moments like the one with the wasps showed it. She also knew that because of that love, her parents would do the impossible to rescue her if she were kidnapped and she had to repay them by rescuing them from the clutches of that witch.

    Por otro lado, también la niña habla del valor. Muchas personas creen que el valor está en la ausencia del miedo, pero no, el valor es enfrentar nuestros miedos, y el mejor ejemplo lo dio Coraline con esa anécdota de su papá y las avispas, cuando fue a buscar sus lentes.

    On the other hand, the girl also talks about courage. Many people believe that courage is the absence of fear, but no, courage is facing our fears, and the best example was given by Coraline with that anecdote about her father and the wasps, when she went to look for his glasses.

    Gaiman narra la expresión corporal de Coraline en esta parte, de una manera tan clara que casi podemos visualizarla. Una niña sobrecogida por el miedo, con un terror profundo y absoluto por lo que está del otro lado del túnel, quién con la anécdota de su padre y el recuerdo de ambos, se da valor para poder continuar con su empresa y rescatar a sus seres amados. Esta es la mayor moraleja que nos deja el libro.

    Gaiman narrates Coraline's corporal expression in this part, in such a clear way that we can almost visualize it. A girl overwhelmed by fear, with a deep and absolute terror for what is on the other side of the tunnel, who with the anecdote of her father and the memory of both, gives herself courage to continue with her enterprise and rescue her loved ones. This is the main moral of the book.

    Creo que, fue un gran error simplificar esta escena en la película, porque sin ella, el dolor de Coraline por la ausencia de sus padres no se ve muy bien representada, por el contrario se siente apática y plana. Es casi como si Coraline se sintiera en la obligación de buscar a sus padres.

    I think it was a big mistake to simplify this scene in the movie, because without it, Coraline's pain for the absence of her parents is not very well represented, on the contrary she feels apathetic and flat. It's almost as if Coraline feels an obligation to search for her parents.

    ¿Considero Coraline y la puerta secreta un libro para niños? definitivamente sí. Los niños de hoy en día (opinión personal) están demasiado sobre protegidos de todo, al punto de que sus padres prácticamente los hacen dependientes de ellos, es por eso que la lectura de un libro como éste, les podría enseñar el significado del valor, de enfrentar los miedos, del amor por la familia... Siento que el libro tiene muchos más aspectos positivos que negativos con respecto a pertenecer a la literatura infantil y que podría ser buena fuente de apoyo al momento de enseñar estos aspectos a nuestros hijos.

    Do I consider Coraline and the Secret Door a children's book? definitely yes. Today's children (personal opinion) are too overprotected from everything, to the point that their parents practically make them dependent on them, that's why reading a book like this could teach them the meaning of courage, of facing fears, of love for the family... I feel that the book has many more positive than negative aspects with respect to belonging to children's literature and that it could be a good source of support at the moment of teaching these aspects to our children.
