   Gary Oldman ha hecho aparición en muchas películas, lo cual nos da material para comparar y a la vez apreciar su trabajo, por ejemplo el ha hecho de policía malo y policía bueno en diferentes épocas de su vida, de policía malo hizo de Stanley el jefe de la división de narcóticos en la película El Profesional donde el protagonista era Jean Reno, es decir, que delante de Reno no cualquier actor destaca, pero Gary se ganó todo la admiración al interpretar al policía corrupto de una forma magistral, solo recordar la escena donde amenaza de muerte a la pequeña Natalie Portman en los baños del edificio del departamento de policía, esa escena me eriza la piel, como puede alguien siquiera replicar su actuación? Creo que es imposible imitar su voz, su respiración, su mirada y su movimiento corporal, el sin duda hacia que viésemos al policía Stanley como alguien despreciable pero a la vez diera miedo, como alguien de quien no querrías siquiera estar cerca.

   La actuación de Gary como policía malo contrasta con al actuación de policía bueno, este rol lo hace muy bien como el comisionado Gordon en las películas de Batman, en estas Gary tiene más edad, se ve como un una voz serena, sus ojos denotan bondad y ansias de justicia, se nota el conflicto interno que lleva en sus ansias de que Gothan tenga un futuro libre de crimen, pero a la vez debe llevar la carga del secreto que descansa en sus hombros para mantener dicha paz. Creo que Gary como actor destaca porque ninguna interpretación le queda grande, de hecho creo que el engrandece cualquier participación aunque sea un rol pequeño o no protagónico .

   ¿Subir de peso o usar maquillaje? Ufff pan comido para Gary, como olvidar su maravillosa interpretación con el Conde Drácula, con Winnona y Keanu como los amantes de la película, lo siento pero el más sexy y atractivo de todo es Gary Oldman, ya desearía yo cruzar los océanos del tiempo para encontrarme al Conde 😅, no se si solo sea un chisme de redes sociales pero dicen que Gary se preparó para ese rol en esa película sólo porque quería decir esa poderosa frase de cruzar los océanos del tiempo. Por otro lado, otro uso de maquillaje impresionante fue el que tuvo para su interpretación de Churchill en la película Las horas más oscuras, en donde su aparición no sólo impresionó por su modificado aspecto, si no por su magnífica actuación que le hizo merecer al premio de la academia, es decir que ajusta con una ropa sencilla o un elaborado maquillaje y prótesis, Gary destaca siempre por su modo de actuar .

   Mi película favorita de Helena es Enid, en donde interpreta a una escritora de libros infantiles muy famosa, la cosa con esta película biográfica es que la escritora tenía una vida y una personalidad digamos muy diferente a lo que plasmaba en los libros, tuvo una infancia difícil y aunque luego podría decirse que vivía bien con su esposo e hijas ella siempre estaba absorta en su obra y tenía una muy poca capacidad social o al menos era lo que se podía ver, esta interpretación es difícil, no cualquier actriz podría hacer un personaje con tanta carga psicológica, Helena lo hace maravillosamente.

   Hello, Internet people! Everything all right? Today I want to tell you about one of my favourite films, starring one of my favourite actors and directed by one of my favourite directors. What could go wrong with this film? Nothing! because it's a gem.

   ¡Hola, gente de Internet! ¿Todo bien? Hoy quiero hablarles de una de mis películas preferidas, y es que la estelariza uno de mis actores favoritos en compañía de la dirección de otro de mis directores preferidos ¿Qué podía salir mal en esta película? ¡Nada! porque es una joya.

   I'm so excited talking about this film that I don't even know where to begin, I think we'll start by talking about the photography. Burton prints as always his own style in this aspect, which although the story doesn't exactly deserve it, is gloomy and sombre, so we see a muted and neutral colour palette, a cloudy sky (typical of London, by the way) and a filter whose atmosphere is oppressive and even depressive. The camera shots are very well cared for, as are the lighting and shadows. There are some scenes where the main photography (gloomy and oppressive) changes completely to a luminous and pleasant one, using warm tones as for example when the Baker's story is told at the beginning or when Mrs Lovett talks about a life with Tood.

   Estoy tan emocionada hablando de este film que no sé ni por dónde empezar, creo que empezaremos hablando de la fotografía. Burton imprime como siempre su propio estilo en este aspecto, ese que aunque la historia no exactamente lo merezca, es lúgubre y sombrío, así pues vemos una paleta de colores apagada y neutra, un cielo nublado (propio de Londres dicho sea de paso) y un filtro cuya atmósfera es opresiva e incluso depresiva. Los planos de cámara están muy bien cuidados como la iluminación y sombras. Hay algunas escenas donde la fotografía principal (lúgubre y opresiva) cambia totalmente a una luminosa y agradable, empleando tonos cálidos como por ejemplo cuando se cuenta la historia de los Baker al inicio o cuando Mrs Lovett habla de una vida junto a Tood.

   Let's talk now about another of my favourite points, the story. It is said that Benjamin Baker, alias Sweeney Tood really existed (although the veracity of the facts is still in dispute today) it is said that Baker was an extremely handsome young man, a barber by profession and although he was poor, he had noble pretensions and even plans to belong to London's high society and move to the West End. Baker had a barber's shop on Fleet Street (a street that still exists today) and on the corner of the street, his friend, Nelly Lovett, had her a bankrupt bakery. It was clear that Benjamin needed a lot of money to belong to the gentry community and the best way to get it was to steal it because although his barbershop was very popular even in the West End, the pay although was good, was not enough because for Benjamin nothing was enough.

Se dice que Benjamin Baker, alias Sweeney Tood existió de verdad (aunque la veracidad de los hechos a día de hoy sigue en discusión) se dice que Baker era un joven en extremo apuesto, barbero de profesión y aunque pobre, tenía ínfulas de noble e incluso planes de pertenecer a la alta sociedad londinense y trasladarse al West End.    He planned to rob a sailor carrying a shipment of royal taxes, but it all went wrong and he was imprisoned and exiled 15 years in Australia. We could say that Benjamin would prefer to live in Australia, once he had served his sentence, but if there was one thing he resented, it was being publicly humiliated. And so the dreaded demon barber of Fleet Street was born.

   At the end of the day, Tood undressed the bodies (maximum two per day) kept the clothes, which he washed with bleach (the victims usually had a lot of money or were carrying a lot of money), removed everything of value and disposed of the bodies in the basement of a nearby cathedral until he was discovered by Lovett who, to avoid her imminent death, suggested that he leave the bodies as free meat for her meatloaf bakery and that is how the possible victim became an accomplice.    Legend also has it that while awaiting his trial and in the days leading up to his hanging, Sweeney could be heard singing (in a very good voice) from his dungeon, apparently happily, about his life, his feelings and what he had done, sometimes together with Mrs Loveet, who ended up committing suicide in her cell without Tood's warning or preventing it (hence the inspiration for the story to be told as a musical). Finally Tood was hanged in the public square where, besides being very handsome and happy, he looked calm, unrepentant and surrounded by a media circus and all the attention he ever wanted.

Saber esto hace que Benjamín se quiebre y que su personalidad dulce y amable de un giro de 180 grados, mientras que en la leyenda Turpin tenía razón y Tood era un sociópata en potencia.

   Another change to the legend is the existence of Pirelli and his assistant, since "in real life" they didn't exist, nor did Johanna or Baker's wife, and the end of the film was also changed to give the film more drama and tragedy. I must say that Burton's adaptation is very, very good.

   Otro de los cambios en cuanto a la leyenda, es la existencia de Pirelli y su ayudante, ya que "en la vida real" no existieron, así como tampoco Johanna ni la esposa de Baker, además el final de la película también fue cambiado para darle más dramatismo y tragedia al film.    Some time ago I said that James Wan (one of my favourite directors) had the habit of meddling in all aspects of the films he directed in order to make sure he left his stamp, Tim is the same, make-up and costumes were brilliant with the design and appearance of the characters, especially in Tood who reflects with his appearance at the beginning the loving and warm family man that he was, and later when he changes due to the traumas and the growing revenge, all his darkness is reflected in his pale and haggard appearance. A ten out of ten without a doubt.

   Hace algún tiempo dije que James Wan (uno de mis directores preferidos) tenía la costumbre de entrometerse en todos los aspectos de las pelis que dirigía para poder asegurarse de dejar su sello, pues Tim es igual, maquillaje y vestuario se lucieron con el diseño y apariencia de los personajes, sobre todo en Tood quien refleja con su apariencia al inicio el padre de familia amoroso y cálido que es, y posteriormente cuando cambia producto de los traumas y la creciente venganza, toda su oscuridad se refleja en su apariencia pálida y ojerosa. Un diez de diez sin dudas.

   You know perfectly well how much I love music and I find it very important when it comes to accompanying a film, both musical and instrumental songs (mood music) and I must say that Swenney Todd's soundtrack is pure art, its opening title is one of the best pieces, an academic work... you could say baroque and probably inspired by the Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach with that church organ at the beginning. The opening already lets you know that the film is going all out and that it's not a beautiful romantic comedy. Another plus point is that the actors sing the songs, so they had a vocal coach to help them sing the pieces of the musical correctly (which are not exactly easy, let alone for non-singers). The voices of Alan Rickman, Helena Bomhan Carter and my beautiful and beloved Jhonny Deep are sublime and the latter was thrilled to be doing the film but terrified of having to sing, even claiming to feel sexy and interesting at times and like an idiot at others, yet he was undeniably amazing as always.

   Saben perfectamente lo mucho que amo la música, y me parece importantísimo a la hora de acompañar un film, tanto canciones al ser musical como las instrumentales (música de ambiente) y debo decir que la banda sonora de Swenney Tood es arte puro, su opening title es una de las mejores piezas, una obra académica... podría decirse barroca y probablemente inspirada en la Tocata y fuga en Re menor de Johann Sebastian Bach, con ese comienzo de órgano de iglesia. El opening ya te hace saber que la película va con todo y que no es una hermosa comedia romántica. Otro punto a favor es que los actores cantan las canciones por lo que tuvieron un coach vocal para poder cantar correctamente las piezas del musical (que no son exactamente sencillas, menos aún para personas que no son cantantes). Las voces de Alan Rickman, Helena Bomhan Carter y mi hermoso y amado Jhonny Deep son sublimes y este último estaba encantado de hacer la película, pero aterrado de tener que cantar, incluso afirmó sentirse sexy e interesante en algunas ocasiones y como un idiota en otras, sin embargo y sin dudas lo hizo increíble como siempre.

   The performances were stellar but of course the three main characters are great actors and they had already worked together so the connection was already there, especially between Johnny and Helena who always worked together in Burton's films. The characters have a great depth and the actors give their performances every emotion at the exact moment between scenes, and acting while singing is not easy, as you have to take care of the notes, the register, the voice colour, the breathing and also remember the script: the facial expressions of the character as well as the actions and interactions with the environment and the other actor. I think the only extra characters in the story are Johanna and her romantic interest, she is only there to give motor and continuity to the conflict between Tood and Turpin, and the boyfriend to be the trigger for the discovery of Tood's true identity, beyond that they have no further development, story or dialogue of interest.

   Las actuaciones fueron estelares, pero claro está que los tres personajes principales son grandes actores y que además ya habían trabajado juntos, así que la conexión ya existía sobre todo entre Jhonny y Helena quienes siempre trabajaban juntos en las pelis de Burton. Los personajes tienen una gran profundidad y los actores le imprimen a sus interpretaciones cada emoción al momento exacto entre las escenas, y actuar mientras se canta no es nada fácil, ya que hay que cuidar las notas, el registro, el color de voz, la respiración y además recordar el guion: las expresiones faciales del personaje además de las acciones e intereacciones con el entorno y el otro actor. Creo que los únicos personajes de más en la historia son Johanna y su interés romántico, ella solo está para darle motor y continuidad al conflicto entre Tood y Turpin, y el novio para que sea el detonante de que se descubra la verdadera identidad de Tood, lejos de ahí ya no tienen más desarrollo, historia o diálogos de interés.

   

   And although I could go on talking about the wonders of this gem, I'll finish the post here, I just have to say that, in short, the film in all its elements is very well made, satisfies the eye and the interest of the viewer from the beginning, it is an excellent story very well approached, told and with elements such as black humour, comedy, romance and drama in the right amounts and at the right time, all in a mix so well worked that has a perfect cohesion and performance. Do I recommend it? Yes, I do, with my eyes closed for genre lovers, it's definitely the best time spent. In closing, I'll leave you with two of my favourite pieces from the film:

   Y aunque podría seguirme extendiendo hablando maravillas de esta joya, dejaré el post aquí, solo debo decir que, en resumidas cuentas, la película en todos sus elementos está muy bien hecha, satisface la vista y el interés del espectador desde el inicio, es una excelente historia muy bien abordada, contada y con elementos como humor negro, comedia, romance y drama en las cantidades correctas y al momento adecuado, todo en una mezcolanza tan bien trabajada que tiene una perfecta cohesión y desempeño. ¿La recomeindo? Con los ojos cerrados para los amantes del género, sin dudas es el mejor tiempo invertido. Para finalizar, les dejaré dos de mis piezas preferidas de la película:
