  1. Crimson Peak: The Thin Line Between Love and Hatred@ridgette239d

Hello movie lovers! How’s your first day of November? Well today was definitely a quite busy day for us because we need to prepare and cook food for our halad para sa mga patay or offering for the dead tonight. It’s a yearly tradition that we always do whenever it’s the first of November, and we do it in order to commemorate our dead loved ones. But what do we do during that commemoration? Well, like I said, we buy and cook various delicacies and we arrange them on our altar so that when spirit of the dead ones visit us, they’ll be able to eat with us. Some even put the foods on the tomb of their dead loved ones, but since the tombs of our loved ones aren’t that spacious, we just stick to offering food on our altar.

So much for that sharing, after doing my chores, I finally decided to watch the movie I’ve been meaning to give a try. It’s Crimson Peak by the way, and the moment I knew it’s a gothic horror, I was immediately convinced that I’ll enjoy watching it. Gothic horror has a different effect on me because usually they have endings that are satisfying, and also their premise is mostly interesting. Further, the romance and horror genres in one movie is intriguing because I’m curious if they’ll be able to blend it well without being too scary or too romantic. And that’s the reason why I prefer this genre because the mix of suspense, horror, and romance are perfect fit for my not-so-brave self. Pure horror would just haunt me for days, so I prefer movies that have these genres because they keep the spooky level in check. Ok, ok…enough with the intro, let’s now take a peek at the story where love, secrets, and death mingle.

    About the Movie

    IMG_20251101_205514.jpg

Crimson Peak is a horror romance movie that was first released way back October 16, 2015. This almost couple of hour movie was directed by Guillermo del Toro and was also written by him and Matthew Robbins. Its story follows the life of Edith Cushing, a woman who has lost her mother at her young age, but even though she lost her, she believes that her mother was there watching her. And that’s why she believes in ghosts, and ghosts become a prominent metaphor on the novel she had written. She aspires to be a writer; however, her efforts in writing were met criticisms and rejection—perhaps because she’s a woman and women in that era aren't supposed as intellectual to be as she is. Yet she didn’t stop in pursuing that dream, well not until she met the mysterious English baronet, Thomas Sharpe.

    IMG_20251101_205526.jpg

Drawn to his mysterious and charming demeanor, she soon finds herself fascinated with this English gentleman. After a series of incidents and even a tragedy, their relationship leveled up, and ultimately that led her to her marriage with him. Yet just when she thought everything was fine, things started to feel strange. Ghosts—both the violent and haunting ones–started appearing right before her eyes, haunting her as if driving her away, plus Thomas' nightly disappearance made her more uneasy. Curious, Edith finds herself investigating, and it wasn’t long before she discovered the meaning behind the ghost hauntings and her mother’s incessant warning. Is it too late to escape dire fate she’s trapped or will there be a saving grace that would pull her out?

    IMG_20251101_205536.jpg

I was definitely in love with the visuals of this movie! The settings and wardrobe were stunning, and watching it’s felt like I’m sucked inside their era. The visuals made me feel a lot of emotions, and I’m very much overwhelmed by how they portray the ghost. Yeah...the few scenes I saw them in shocked the hell out of me because they’re ghastly and menacing, but as soon as I got used to how they suddenly popped out, I realized how beautifully portrayed they are. Usually, the ghosts I saw in other movies before where they are either portrayed in a solid or transparent manner…like some of them felt unghastly, and if they’re not pale and gloomy or bloody looking, I wouldn’t realize they aren’t ghost. However, the way the ghosts felt in this movie was different for me because, unlike the usual just terrifying ghosts, they felt more emotional.

    IMG_20251101_205546.jpg

They aren’t just terrifying, for they’re also like a clump of emotions—anger, regret, and melancholy, and wisps of memories. They didn’t only induce terror, but they also made me feel emotions that I usually don’t feel from seeing ghosts. And as for its characters, I can’t say if they have unique ones because I do think they somehow follow the generic villain and heroine mold. The same goes for the plot, which I guess is one of the aspects that aren’t that impressive. The pacing was fine because I do appreciate the gradual rising of tension and also the subtle foreshadowing along the way. However, if you aren’t fond of a slow burn start, then I advise you to steer clear because it did take time for its story to pick up its pace. But if you’re convinced that you have enough patience to do so, then eventually you’ll like it.

    IMG_20251101_205558.jpg

This movie was undeniably enjoyable, but of course, there’s that part where I somehow didn’t like, and that’s the incestuous relationship of the Sharpe siblings. I thought I was just overthinking those minor details that hinted at that kind of relationship…like I really thought it’s just me giving malice to every familial interaction they had. Turns out I’m right with my hunch, and I’m glad they didn’t reveal it too early because I definitely wouldn’t finish it. Incest stories are totally an ick for me, so as much as possible, I steer clear of any materials that have such. Unfortunately, I encountered that in this movie, yet thankfully that’s in the end part, plus they didn’t portray it extremely, just enough to wrench the heart of the protagonist and mine. That scene really made me cry because I didn’t see that betrayal would be portrayed that way, and also the way Tom Hiddleston acted in the scene left me torn. The way his eyes spoke and pleaded that moment…I don’t know if it’s a silent apology or resignation, but either way, they both affect me while watching it.

    IMG_20251101_205624.jpg

Overall, with flaws aside, watching this movie has been an enjoyable experience for me, yet like I felt with Tom Hiddleston’s character, I’m quite torn on what to feel about its end. It wasn’t exactly the tragic one that was imagined or a happy end either. Yet it’s definitely the one that will make you ponder for a moment, and honestly, I’m quite curious why it isn’t that known. So, I try to read various sources because it wasn’t talked about that much, and mostly it all boils down to ineffective marketing. They said the marketing focus on it being a horror, but honestly, it's quite different from being a total horror movie because it’s definitely a gothic horror. Since it’s marketed the wrong way, a lot of viewers naturally did had inaccurate expectations for it. It’s spooky but not the total horror level type, and that’s why it didn’t clicked well with the audience who are expecting a horror movie. It has a few decent jump scares, but other than that, instead of horror, I felt more the suspense. That’s why if you’re into gothic horror with cool aesthetics and cinematography, then it’s a must that you try Crimson Peak.

And before I end this up, I'll share with you its trailer, so—

For those who have already read me and know a little about me, you know that I am a fearful woman, I am not a lover of horror and suspense series or movies, but sometimes I dare to watch one or another, by suggestion and always in the company of someone, so while I was doing the different cleaning sessions in the room of my late mother, among the many movies I had I found "The Scarlet Summit" and I immediately remembered that the first time I saw it, it was by her suggestion and in her company, I was pleased.

Now, the plot of the film, basically, is about the story of a rich young woman, Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) daughter of a businessman Carter Cushing (Jim Beaver), who lost her mother at a very young age and after her mother's death, she saw for the first time a ghost, her mother's ghost, who approached her to warn her: "Beware of the Scarlet Summit". Years later, after meeting a gallant English baronet Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), young Edith, who dreamed of becoming a writer, falls in love, but her father, as well as a childhood friend who is in love with her, Dr. Alan McMichael (Charlie Hunnam), are not entirely convinced that this man is right for her, but the most disturbing thing is that Edith is again visited by the ghost of her mother who again repeats the warning.

In a mysterious way after secretly discovering about the Baronet and his sister and with the threat of unmasking them, Edith's father, makes his daughter's relationship with this Baronet end a bit dramatically, but after the mysterious death of Edith's father, Thomas looks for her, they reconcile, marry and set sail for England, So they arrive at the dilapidated house of this Sir and his sister which is seated on a red clay mine, in the middle of a field and in a later conversation, with her now husband, he mentions that the farm is known as "Scarlet Summit", due to the hot red clay that seeps through the snow.

    image.png

    Source/ Fuente

There begin to happen several things, through which Edith discovers a series of murders and a relationship that she did not imagine between her husband and her sister-in-law, this film is full of impressive effects around the group of ghosts that appear in it, as they look besides dark and be black and red depending on the case, disfigured and of enormous proportions, is one of the things that strangely, being me a coward I like.

The costumes, the scenery of the house and the U.S. of the time makes you travel back in time and remember how were the rules of courtesy and etiquette of that time and the expected behavior for the time, both ladies and gentlemen, one of the things I enjoyed was the recreation of the house, the spaces that show us in it and even the deterioration of the same manage to make them look beautiful, The cast plays their roles excellently, but my favorite here is Jessica Chastain as Lady Lucille Sharpe, sister of Sir Thomas, who in addition to transmitting elegance and mystery, is really scary when you begin to discover what she is capable of.

Finally, if you like suspense movies with good affections and also period, I am sure that "The Scarlet Summit" is for you, I say goodbye waiting to read in the comments your impressions, if you have already seen this film which by the way was directed by Guillermo del Toro.

A suspense that envelops us in beautiful images of a gothic fantasy, built with scenarios that take us into a world both beautiful and dark, that is where we find the exquisite essence of 'Crimson Peak', another artistic work of the well-known Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro.

    E S P A Ñ O L

We know this director's brand very well, as the beautiful paintings he presents us with in different cinematic shots seem to be taken from an extraordinary parallel world. The film was released in 2015 and starred Mia Wasikowska as Edith Cushing, Tom Hiddleston as Sir Thomas Sharpe, Jessica Chastain as Lady Lucille Sharpe and Charlie Hunnam as Dr. Alan McMichael. The film was produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Universal Pictures.

The film is a romantic drama, full of suspense and a strange, sick romance that will only be revealed at the very end, elements that are very well inserted into the plot. The settings are worthy of a gothic novel by Ann Ridcliffe, one of the most emblematic figures of this genre. One thing I do highlight about the film, is that the plot seems to be diminished by the beautiful gothic environments it presents us with. A terrifying story with a predictable ending, but that doesn't make it an underrated feature, since the rich atmosphere leads us to an atmosphere of curiosity, inhabited by ghosts from Del Toro's universe.

The cinematography was done by Dan Laustsen, who has worked again with Del Toro in "The Shape of Water " (2017), revealing the beautiful environments for the delight of our eyes, focusing on the artistic part of the scenery. The music was composed by Fernando Velázquez, who has also been musical interpreter of the beautiful fantasy film "A Monster Calls " (2016), which I may review someday. The costumes are another element that stands out, and thanks to the work of Kate Hawley we can appreciate the colorful costumes that contrast with the gloomy environments of many scenes, not for nothing that thanks to this Kate has been nominated for best costumes twice thanks to her performance in this film.

The plot is the usual one we can find within the classic gothic novel. A wealthy young woman named Edith Cushing with the dream of becoming a writer meets an Englishman named Thomas Sharpe with whom she falls in love, but the death of her father Carter Cushing played by Jim Beaver changes the plans of her life, and she accepts the marriage proposal of the English nobleman. His sister, a stern and somewhat distant woman, seems to disagree with their union, but the unimpeded couple embarks on a trip to the Sharpe manor house in Cumberland, England, where the extraordinary things happen throughout the film. There we have a house in the style of "The Fall of the House of Usher " by the American writer Edgard A. Poe, a dilapidated house sinking from its foundations, plagued by a cold atmosphere that enters through the countless openings of the place. In this place, our heroine is the victim of terrifying ghostly apparitions that remind her of a past warning not to go to Crimson Peak.

The mystery that turns into horror, a secret that will devastate the protagonist as she realizes the vortex of doom into which she has fallen. As the story continues, the main character goes through a sort of reverse Crescendo in which we see her, at first, as a strong, determined woman, with a dream to achieve which is to become a great writer, wanting her first ghost novel to achieve success, but then we see our heroine become fragile, like a damsel in distress, as she is overwhelmed by that evil that is at her side. In the end, we will see a brave protagonist, resurrected from the demons that wanted to destroy her.

The film's screenplay was written by the director himself with the help of Matthew Robbins, who has excelled as a screenwriter in several science fiction, horror and fantasy films, creating on this occasion a gothic tale with an ending, which in my opinion was predictable, although adding surreal details that went well with the toxic Anglo-Saxon environment. However, it is quite predictable and usual the part of the villain falling in love with the heroine, this is not an advance is quite deductible, but I thought it was a nice detail as it makes us realize who the real villain is. In this aspect the film does not lose its romantic touch that is also characteristic in the gothic novel, but in the terrifying, it leaves a lot halfway.

The presence of ghosts is sporadic, but I can't deny that the paranormal makeup of Xavier Bastida has been for me something spectacular, to tell the truth I expect from a Del Toro's film and everything coming from his wide imagination. I consider that as fantastic art the film is a masterpiece, its plot is disturbing, but it lacks some strength, maybe other people perceive it differently and say I'm wrong, but it's just my opinion. I give the film a rating of 8/10, it is very good to spend the night lying in bed, there is a lot to expect from this film, and if you like fantastic stories with gothic atmospheres of Anglo-Saxon style, you will love this one.

  4. Movie review: Crimson Peak (2015)@vickaboleyn2683d

    Author's note:

The following review was published on Spanish language yesterday February 21st. It may content spoilers.

    Source of the image

Today I've watched with my grandmother this film of supernatural thriller, which was written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro; this director is known  for directing fantastic films such as The Shape of the Water, Hellboy, Pan's  Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, among others. He has also been a scriptwriter and executive producer of some films such as The Hobbit and Mama, and  also the author of a book series called The Trilogy of Darkness (trilogy that I hope to get one day).

Honestly I loved this movie from the beginning to the end, not only for the plot but also for the symbolism behind some of certain elements. At first it seems that it was a film more alike those called d'epoque",  with that gothic nostalgia worthy of Edgar Allan Poe himself; that is, we see two strangers who meet on a sunny day (Edith and Thomas), they fall in love, they "face" adversity (Edith's father, Mr. Cushing, and Alan McMichael, the girl's friend) and at the end they get happiness in a ruined house that Thomas promises to do the best he can to repair it.

However, as the film progresses, we learn that everything was coldly calculated. Allerdale Hall, the ruined home of the siblings Thomas and Lucille Sharpe, is the scenario of a series of horrific crimes that begin with the discovery of the incestuous relationship between the siblings by their mother, a woman who suffered domestic violence and who, as Lucille subtly suggested when she chatted with Edith in the music room, she unloaded her frustration against her children by locking them in the attic. The deaths followed with the three previous wives of Thomas; and if we observe the common patterns well, we discover that they were all heirs of some fortunes and that they had lost their relatives. "A death for mercy", according to Lucille's conception in the scene in which she forced Edith to sign the last legal papers.

Now, of what symbolism I was talking about previously? You find the answer on the house and Lucille.

The house has been the scenario of bloody events that marked Lucille's psyche; such events were probably the constant physical and emotional abuse to which she was subjected by her mother, becoming a sort of pillow where Mrs. Sharpe discharged her hatred and rage against her husband. That is why she, almost at the end, reveals to us her true colors: an emotionally disturbed woman, with a terror of loneliness and without a clear notion of what fraternal love is; a woman who refuses to cut her ties to the past, one who is used to torture and pain.

Therefore, the house becomes a symbol of violence, negativity and division; all this reinforced again and again by the actions of Lucille. A symbol very well worked by Del Toro.

I could mention some more symbols that I've found on the movie, but I leave this review here and invite you, my dear reader, to judge yourself when you wacth the movie.

  5. Reseña fílmica No. 30: Crimson Peak (2015)@vickaboleyn2684d

Ojo: Esta reseña puede contener spoilers

    Fuente
