Crayon Shin-chan: Super-Dimension! The Storm Called My Bride

Hi everyone! I recall mentioning one of my favorite anime series in an old post—one I’ve watched on TV since childhood and still enjoy today. I really loved the first movie I saw from the franchise; I even remember watching it again with my aunts and uncles one day while staying at my grandmother's house. A few days ago, while making a list of movies and series, the title popped into my mind, so I decided to take this opportunity to share my thoughts on Crayon Shin-chan: Super-dimension! The Storm Called My Bride (known in Japanese as Kureyon Shinchan: Chōjikū! Arashi o Yobu Ora no Hanayome).

Hola a todos, en un antiguo post recuerdo mencionar acerca de una de mis series de anime favoritas y cómo siempre la veía en televisión desde niña e incluso actualmente la sigo disfrutando, por lo que entre esas, cuando vi mi primera película de esta, la verdad la disfruté tanto que recuerdo luego repetirla junto con mis tíos en un día en el que me quedé donde mi abuela y, pues, hace unos días mientras realizaba una lista de películas y series, salió esta en mis recuerdos, por lo que aprovechando hoy les daré mi opinión sobre "Crayon Shin-chan: "La novia del futuro" (Kureyon Shinchan: Chōjikū! Arashi o Yobu Ora no Hanayome), o conocida en inglés como "Crayon Shin-chan: ¡Super-dimensión! The Storm Called My Bride".

As the 18th film in the popular Japanese series, this movie was written by Michiko Yokote, directed by Akira Shigino, and produced by the Shin-Ei Animation studio. Released in April 2010 and distributed by Toho, it was very well received thanks to its fresh and engaging approach. Regarding the plot, the story begins after a typical day at the Nohara household; while Shin-chan is relaxing in the park, he and his friends are surprised by a girl named Tamiko. She appears looking for our quirky friend to take him to the future—a claim they are initially skeptical of—but after she identifies herself as his fiancée and offers them cookies, he agrees to go along with the whole group. They soon realize they must undertake a mission to save both his adult self and his city, which has fallen into chaos.

Siendo la película número 18 de la popular serie japonesa, esta fue escrita por Michiko Yokote y dirigida por Akira Shigino, producida por el estudio "Animación Shin-Ei". Fue estrenada en abril del año 2010 y distribuida por la empresa Toho, y esta tuvo un muy buen recibimiento debido a que el enfoque era nuevo y llamativo. Por lo que, centrándonos en la trama, todo comienza cuando un día, luego de una rutina normal en casa de los Nohara y mientras Shin-chan está tranquilo en el parque, sus amigos son sorprendidos por una chica llamada Tamiko que aparece buscando a nuestro peculiar amigo para llevarlo al futuro, lo cual no creen mucho, pero luego de decir que es su prometida y ofrecer galletas, este accede a ir, siendo acompañado por todo el grupo, dándose cuenta luego de que tendrán que estar en una misión donde el objetivo será salvarse a él mismo de adulto y a su ciudad, la cual está en medio del caos.

I like this storyline for several reasons, one being the futuristic setting; it gives the show a different vibe compared to what we were used to—adventures confined to a traditional city aesthetic and the innocence of childhood. Yet, it retains that signature humor—even amplifying it—by generating laughs while immersing us in a story that delivers something I’d long awaited: a glimpse into the future lives of the cast. It handles this aspect exceptionally well, showing us characters like Nene as a teacher and Kazama as a wealthy guy. What I loved most, however, was seeing baby Himawari all grown up and playing a key role in the adventure; it was truly exciting to see her break away from her usual persona—that cute girl obsessed with boys and jewelry—to become a genuine help to her brother.

Esta trama me gusta por varias razones, siendo una el tema futurista, lo cual le da ese aire distinto a lo que veíamos: las aventuras que se mantenían dentro de una estética tradicional de ciudad y de lo que es la inocencia de los niños en sí. Sin embargo, no deja de tener ese humor característico; incluso lo aumenta, ya que busca mantener esa forma de generar risas mientras nos sumerge en una historia que, de alguna forma, y siendo otra de las cosas que me gusta, nos hace ver algo que esperamos por mucho y es ese plot twist de la vida de cada integrante de esta serie, pero en el futuro, lo cual personalmente siento que lo hace muy, muy bien, mostrándonos a personajes como a Nene siendo maestra, Kazama siendo un chico rico e incluso algo que me gustó más fue ver a la misma bebé Himawari como adulta y siendo parte importante de esta aventura, cosa que me emocionó mucho, ya que rompe con su personaje habitual de tierna y amante de los chicos y las joyas para ser una ayuda total para su hermano.

Another aspect I really appreciated is the approach taken with Shin-chan himself, which—from my perspective—serves two purposes: first, it shows us the lengths he is willing to go to achieve his goal and save the day—demonstrating how, despite being a child, he fully grasps what needs to be done and the challenges he faces. Second, and more importantly, it strikes a nostalgic chord for those of us who grew up watching the series; it presents Shin-chan as that very same superhero in the future, dedicated to protecting his people. This creates a powerful impact on both the child version of Shin-chan and the audience, who are thrilled to see him embody the persona of his favorite hero.

Otra cosa que me agradó demasiado es que el enfoque que le dan al mismo Shin-chan, desde mi punto de vista, está para dos cosas: primero, mostrarnos lo lejos que puede llegar para cumplir su objetivo y salvar el día, incluso cómo, siendo un niño, logra comprender bien lo que debe realizar y a lo que se enfrenta; y en segunda, y más importante, nos da justo en la nostalgia para quienes crecimos viendo la serie, y es que nos muestra a Shin-chan como el mismo superhéroe en el futuro y siendo quien busca proteger a su gente, generando ese impacto en el mismo Shin-chan niño y en la audiencia, que se emociona con la idea de ver cómo encarna la vestimenta de su héroe favorito.

And while the premise might seem like a quiet, everyday story about saving a futuristic world, the fact that it breaks out of the "children's show" mold—infused with a touch of boundless dark humor—allows our imaginations to expand. We witness scenarios that we might not have fully envisioned given the show's initial nature. This evolution extends to the parents as well; as the only adult characters remaining in the adventure, they too undergo significant growth. Most importantly, we see how—by this futuristic stage—they have come to terms with their fears. Those very fears, which once triggered laughter and the inevitable parental reprimand, have now become sources of security and tools to help their son.

Y aunque puede ser una trama tranquila y cotidiana de un mundo futurista a salvar, el hecho de que salga de ese cascarón de serie infantil con un toque de humor negro e ilimitado hace que ampliemos más la imaginación, viendo escenarios que tal vez, si llegamos a plantear, error, la naturaleza de esta serie no la veíamos realizada del todo. Y también pasa con los padres de este, ya que al ser los únicos personajes adultos que se mantienen en esta aventura, también vemos ese avance y, sobre todo, algo importante: vemos cómo ya para este punto futurista han asentado sus miedos y cómo ahora esos mismos que estábamos acostumbrados a que generaran esa risa y, por ende, la típica reprimenda, ahora son los que los hacen sentir seguros y que sean las armas para ayudar a su hijo.

As I mentioned earlier, this is one of my favorites and it really makes me laugh, so it is undoubtedly one of the ones I tend to remember most. It is also a movie I would watch multiple times—simply to enjoy scenes like the interactions between Shichan and Kazama, or to further analyze the consistent way certain values are portrayed.
