  1. Film Review: Ready Player One (2018)@drax297d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Steven Spielberg enjoys the reputation of being the most successful and influential American filmmaker in recent years not so much because his films have broken box office records as due to his exceptional ability to recognise and harness new trends, thereby paving the way for those who follow. Thanks to this, Spielberg can boast not only an exceptionally prolific but also a diverse filmography, meaning his contemporary films bear little resemblance to those he made several years ago. Naturally, this has been aided by his practice of offsetting every ultra-commercial summer blockbuster aimed at children and teenagers with a serious, ‘engaged’ autumn drama designed to chase ‘Oscars’. Ready Player One, which was released in 2018, belongs to Spielberg’s ‘summer’ repertoire but is particularly intriguing due to its utmost efforts to be ‘hip’—that is, in line with everything the youngest generations supposedly love, or at least what older generations believe they love.

The film is based on Ernest Cline’s eponymous 2010 novel, one of the first to draw inspiration and subject matter from the phenomenon of MMORPGs—multiplayer online video games in which millions of players create vivid avatars and virtual identities, and around which an impressive virtual economy has already emerged. The plot, meanwhile, is set in the relatively distant future—2045—when the world has become a polluted, overpopulated, and increasingly inhospitable place, making it understandable that most of its inhabitants have turned to Oasis, a virtual reality game where they can do almost anything they desire and become what they can only dream of in the real world. One such player is the narrator and protagonist, Wade Watts, alias Parzival (Tye Sheridan), a teenager from Columbus, Ohio. Like many players, Wade becomes obsessed with the grand hunt initiated by Oasis’s creator, James Halliday (Mark Rylance), shortly before his death. The goal is to find the so-called Easter eggs—keys that will grant the winner not only unimaginable material wealth in the real world but also control over Oasis. Wade is aided in his quest by a group of colourful virtual friends, though he becomes far more captivated by a player named Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), whose avatar he falls for. Complicating matters, the quest is infiltrated by the corporation IOI, whose director, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), dreams of seizing control of Oasis to dominate the world, stopping at nothing to achieve this in both the online and real worlds.

The extent to which Spielberg and the film industry have evolved over the past few decades is best illustrated by the fact that during filming, Spielberg scarcely needed to set foot on set. Scenes shot in the traditional manner—with live actors, physical sets, and conventional cameras—last approximately 11 minutes, while everything else was recreated using CGI and animation at Industrial Light and Magic studios. By comparison, Jurassic Park, which left audiences awestruck a quarter of a century earlier with its revolutionary special effects, featured only eight minutes of CGI. Considering Spielberg had already mastered CGI-driven filmmaking with the animated Adventures of Tintin several years prior, it is entirely understandable that Ready Player One emerges as one of the most visually impressive Hollywood films in recent times. However, the numerous scenes reconstructing the fantastical virtual worlds inhabited by the protagonists will hold even greater appeal for viewers well-versed in popular culture, particularly that of the 1980s, as the film teems with pop-culture references (explicitly acknowledged by characters as integral to the plot), encompassing films, TV series, pop music, and, of course, video games. Perhaps the most impressive of these scenes is Spielberg’s homage to his friend and colleague Stanley Kubrick, using CGI technology to guide the protagonists almost literally through Kubrick’s iconic horror film The Shining. Cynics, on the other hand, might argue that Ready Player One is at least partially autobiographical—that Spielberg attempts to present his own self-image to the audience through certain characters. This applies both to the character of Halliday, portrayed by the unrecognisable yet brilliant British actor Mark Rylance (drawing inspiration from Steve Jobs), and to Wade, played by the far more pallid Tye Sheridan, likely cast due to his relative physical resemblance to a young Spielberg. The rest of the cast is largely up to standard, though some of the finest talents, such as Simon Pegg, are relegated to near-forgotten cameos. Mendelsohn, meanwhile, excels as Sorrento, delivering one of the most striking yet oddly plausible villain portrayals in contemporary Hollywood cinema.

Despite the exceptional talents both in front of and behind the camera, Ready Player One falls far short not only of perfection but also of Spielberg’s highest standards. Despite efforts to diversify characters in today’s ‘politically correct’ context—such as casting Black lesbian actress Lena Waithe as Wade’s virtual friend Aech—the usual moral guardians have identified what they deem unacceptable sexism by today’s standards of champagne socialist sensibility, complaining that the protagonist’s heroic quest is motivated by heterosexual impulses toward a female character, thereby reducing Art3mis, despite being portrayed as a ‘strong, kick-ass female heroine’, to a mere ‘trophy’. However, Ready Player One suffers more profoundly from another form of disconnect with modern generations and their perspectives. This primarily stems from its foundation in 1980s nostalgia, meaning the film will be most appreciated and enjoyed by the fathers and grandfathers of its target audience. Even more problematic is the unanswered question of whether the 2045 world is a utopia or dystopia—that is, the ambiguous stance on whether a virtual world controlled by capitalist oligarchs, even those as likable as the geeky Halliday and his young heirs, represents part of the solution or part of the problem in the future world. Ready Player One, of course, attempts to depict the future optimistically, much as Spielberg’s Hollywood did with the present during the Obama era, giving the world a thumbs-up. Yet this may reflect less Spielberg’s faith in a better future than, at least within the context of this film, an unjustifiably rose-tinted nostalgia for a better past.

  2. Ready Player One Movie Review@psyberkid451d

    psyberkid(1).png

Hello everyone, after a long time I have come to you with a movie review. This movie is one of my movies. I usually like movies about technology. This movie shows our development in the future in the world of technology. And since it is made by the famous director Steven Spielberg, which makes the movie extraordinary. Not only technology, but romance and reality are shown in it in such a beautiful way, which is very extraordinary.

In the movie, we can see where the changes in our society in 2045 are shown. In this, technology has improved more and people have become rich and poverty has come among them. Due to the increase in overpopulation, poverty has increased and people are now less in reality and more active in the virtual world. In this, everyone is addicted to a game in the virtual world.

Where a game from the OASIS company and when James Halliday, the creator of this game, died. Then he made an announcement. The first person to win a contest with three keys will get an Easter egg and inherit the entire company. Everyone wants to play this game because it is worth over a trillion and the biggest reason is that a company is working here with many departments working together to win this game.

Here our main character meets other characters where a relationship develops between them that is very useful in their real life when they fight with this company. In the end, our main character finds the clue from where he slowly starts acquiring the keys. Finally, he becomes the owner of that company.

I really liked this movie because it is related to technology and it presented our future to us. Its presentation and the music it had were very beautiful. I really liked these, I hope you will like it.

Thanks you so much for reading. See you next :)

  3. Ready Player One | Movie Review 🎥@josehany1081d

I have become addicted to watching movies and I also love giving my opinion, sharing a bit of it and bringing recommendations. Of course there are a lot of bad movies that I don't even spend the time to talk about, but instead to others that can be entertaining.

Today I want to recommend a movie that I had on hold for the simple fact that I thought it would be pretty bad, but it wasn't how I imagined it, it didn't surprise me either, but I liked it, although it has its cliché.

Ready Player One, is a movie that is in two worlds: the real world and the virtual world. From the beginning we can see how the real world is destroyed, the places collapsed as if a great earthquake had occurred, which leaves me thinking that it could be a reality in the future, perhaps not so far away, just like the proposal of the virtual world.

In this film from the first minutes I feel that we could be appreciating our own future and it is that it shows us a reality and it is this excuse of being cut off from the real world, from people, I know it seems very contrary to what technology was created for, which is to keep in touch, but people use it to go to another world, to get away from reality.

Entering more into context with the film, it is about a young man who lost his parents and lives with his aunt in some rather poor trailers. He is passionate about a virtual world called OASIS created by James Halliday. This was a world where people preferred to spend almost all their time there, it became very popular, even more so when the reality that surrounded them was really very discouraging.

    ready_player_one_trailer_still_4.jpg Source

The creator of this popular virtual world passes away and it is when he leaves a video indicating that he has left clues to find an easter egg, and whoever finds this egg will find treasures and will be the owner of the game that he has created.

This is where our main character Wade, a true Halliday fan, comes in. The young man wishes to win to have the fortune in his hands, and more than that he had not thought.

The good thing about the movie is that it makes you immerse yourself in that virtual world, with characters and a lot of things, maybe some gamers will like this movie and some other more demanding ones will say that it is not very good, but the truth is that it complies with a purpose, to entertain and it achieves it.

The ending is a bit predictable and that's when I say cliché because sometimes you want to be entertained but not keep seeing more of the same, but one certain thing that leaves us with a message is that reality is the only real thing.

Hi hive, today I come to talk to you about a movie that I saw in the theater as soon as it came out and after that I had a long time without seeing it until a few days ago that I remembered and decided to revisit it to see if it was as I remembered it, so for that reason is that today I want to talk to you about Ready Player One.

Ready Player One is a science fiction movie released in 2018, directed and produced by the great Steven Spielberg and starring Tye Kayle Sheridan and Olivia Kate Cooke. This movie shows us a dystopian world where all people use a video game called OASIS to evade reality. Having given some context, let's get started!

    23259598-3317-485E-ABAD-8A8CAA5DF60B.jpeg

    imagen

It should be noted that the first time I saw this movie I was quite entertained and found it interesting so part of revisiting this movie was to see if it was as fun and entertaining as I remembered it, but the question is, is it better or worse than I remembered it?

First I always like to start talking about what I loved the most about the movie and in this case it is without a doubt how it deals with the subject of video games, and it is not only the aesthetics but it also touches on important issues such as the influence that these can have in real life and how sometimes the fans of certain video games make it a toxic place. I really like it when movies take on a concept and take it seriously and not just as something aesthetic to sell more.

    3CA52DBD-4DF1-41EE-AC74-6941C8A94101.jpeg

    imagen

As for the story of ready player one I find it quite entertaining and interesting because I really like the idea of looking for keys and clues that will lead our protagonists to a "prize", not only because it turns ready player one into an entertaining "adventure" type movie but also because that's how video games work, a set of obstacles, tasks or missions that must be accomplished to achieve a goal, and this movie definitely conveys that.

Obviously we can not miss all the winks that this movie has to pop culture, and the first time I saw this movie it was fun to go discovering each of the references that were showing us, and who did not love to see the Delorean from Back to the future, are small details that make this movie much more dynamic.

    DF4493DD-E742-431A-A227-12488C96A038.jpeg

    imagen

Now, this time that I saw it I found some small negative points that although they are not of much weight if I feel they should be mentioned and is that the coincidences that happen in this film for the benefit of the script are many and there are things that happen but do not feel with any weight in the plot, if it is true that in any work there will be coincidence for the plot to flow, but I think in this case there are too many, that at first glance can be left to pass, but when analyzed with a magnifying glass the film does fall in one or another moment.

But I think it is too much to say that this does not mean that I do not like it or that it is a bad movie, because in the end it fulfills its goal which is to entertain and it has some interesting action scenes and battles, a quite characteristic and cool animation, a remarkable humor and a plot that amuses us, all this is much more than enough to consider Ready Player One as a great movie.

    7B29B465-5EF0-48B1-B25A-F3E245EF0F03.jpeg

    imagen

In conclusion I feel that it is a tribute to the world of video games, that is more than clear, but I feel that they knew how to do it in a smart way and the movie is super fun, when I went to see it at the cinema I had high expectations and I left super happy because Ready Player One offered me exactly what I expected, so you can't ask for more to this movie.

I would like to know if you have seen this movie and if so, what is your opinion about it?

  5. 'Ready Player One' by Steven Spielberg Review: Mediocre, yet oddly enjoyable@namiks2843d

    Ready Player One.jpg

Steven Spielberg is one of the most famous filmmakers in the history of cinema. He's known for his 80s hits, as well as his more recent films, which also happen to be set in a similar fashion, connecting to the 80s through references or simply being set during the period. He's also known as one of the highest-paid directors in history, but that's another story.

With Ready Player One being Spielberg's latest film, it almost feels as the film of all his films; the one that takes his style and nostalgia to a whole other level. Set in the near future, Ready Player One displays a dystopia so strong that it's resulted in the population escaping it almost entirely through the means of a virtual reality world -- one where your bills can be paid via the same in-game currency.

Upon the death of the game's creator, speculation arises within the game after it's revealed that the game is riddled with puzzles that must be solved, and the first person to do so will receive full control of the game, alongside his entire assets. It's not the best narrative, but I believe it's probably one of the few things that could make sense within a film set in virtual reality without appearing too silly or unrealistic.

While it still remains rather cheesy in particular scenes and dialogue, Ready Player One manages to be an interesting concept that's pulled off rather well, despite the fact that it's riddled with pop-culture references and product placement -- it manages to include everything in a way that's connected to the story: you can be anything or anyone within the game. There's no limits.

As expected, this isn't a film attempting to break boundaries in terms of how artistic it can be, there's not much creativity to the directing or the writing, it's really a typical fun-and-happy-all-out-chaos action flick wanting to keep you entertained for a few hours. And I must admit, there are moments within the film that feel cinematic enough to impress, and chances are, you will enjoy it.

Despite its relatively long runtime, Ready Player One follows the traditional 'call to action' method of storytelling. The protagonist receives his task and is set on an adventure, and new characters are introduced in order to help progress the story and help the protagonist achieve his goal in times of need. This method is typically rather flawless if done with prior thought, and I believe that's what makes the film so likeable despite it overall being rather mediocre. There's an ongoing sense of adventure with various hoops that the protagonist must jump through, and it's enough to keep you engaged.

  6. Insomniac Film Festival #73: Ready Player One@rvgenaille2879d

image I really can’t decide if I like this or not. It was a decent flick but ultimately very surface level I thought. I tried reading the novel way back when but couldn’t finish it. The movie was very different anyway. The pop culture stuff was just to show, there was no exploration of why it mattered, or why it matters to all of us in the real world. It made some platitudinous statements toward the end but ultimately it was not all that meaningful. image It looked good, flowed well but left me feeling kind of empty. And is it an animated film? The performances were good for the most part in the live action sections and well captured for the animated stuff I guess.

    Pleasant entertainment but meaningless.

  7. Noob Film Review : Ready Player One - Is our body is a vessel to a higher being?@nazirullsafry2905d

    poster.jpg

Disclaimer: This review is from my perspective as a viewer with little or no knowledge of films and how they are made. What is written is entirely how I feel about the movie from my personal view as a movie fan and not a film critique. Also, note my limited English vocabulary in describing things and the absence of film-making terms and jargons. My take on the movie and its understanding are also probably based on the life that I went through as a person, as I think films touches these elements most of the time in terms of story. I hereby apologize for any error in touching those matters. Also, I have a very short-term memory so the review might miss talking about some parts

    Synopsis

The story happens in the year 2045 where the gaming scene has taken a global and a bigger stature place in the society. People got connected through their virtual goggles and suits and seem to live life in an online world called Oasis, more than living their real life.

Mostly because there is very little to live for in real life. (sad) 1.jpg The creator of the Oasis, called James Haliday created a quest of winning half trillion dollars and the total ownership and control of the Oasis to the one who wins the game and acquires the Easter Egg.

So every gamer in the world engaged in the quest and a big global gaming conglomerate called IOI that has all the tech and human resources joins in the fight too.

The story then focused onto the journey of a by named Wade, also known as Parzival when he is in the Oasis and Art3mis a female gamer who has caught his attention and love. 3.jpg

    4.jpg

5.jpg Together with the other few group gamers, they fight against IOI to win over the control of the Oasis, although there is a bigger hidden story behind all the game and quest related to the creator James Haliday, which is why he created the quest in the first place. 2.jpg It takes you on this journey through the 80s and 90s visual pop and nerdy icons in a new style and cinematic medium of visual effects, high tech 3D representation of it.

    Comment

Strangely, I'm not being pulled by the tech and the nerdiness of the movie theme. But instead, I looked at it in a spiritual way.

The idea and belief that our body is a vessel of a real self that has a higher purpose. And whatever the vessel does in this realm will be reflected in the higher realm. 6.jpg The premise of high-tech and being in a different world through virtual goggles might have inspired and put the 80s kids in awe but its pretty common nowadays and it might not have the same appeal as to how the first Tron movie with its idea of another virtual world inside the computer.

The attempt to draw nostalgia of the 80s and 90s didn't really work on me either. The magic of it is lost because we all know theoretically how it is all being made - with computers.

It is like going to a magic show knowing how the magicians do their tricks.

The flabbergasted feeling of *Indiana Jones stepping into thin air which is the invisible bridge in the final act of *The Last Crusade, and witnessing Moses part the Red Sea in The Ten Commandments is long lost and I doubt I will experience the same spectacle again. Despite how many trillion pixels and fake glares they put on the screen.

Taken from the book Finding Meaning at the Movie lend to me by a veteran in the film Industry, Hassan Abd Muthalib, it says about popcorn and sensuality in movies.

...If simply exciting and pleasing the audience and making money are the primary goals of moeviemaking, then we need to be alert when we view even the most highly praised movies. The great push of Hollywood cinema, as Margaret Miles and other have pointed out, is toward convention and conformity - providing a happy ending; portraying disaster overcome without pain; or glossing nonconformity, women's concerns, and the legacy of colonization, to note a few examples. At the same time, the level of screen violence and explicit sexual activity has escalated, frequently unmotivated by the requirements of the plot logic. As viewers, we must ask ourselves; Are our emotions being manipulated? Are tough issues being raised only to be sugared over? Are we settling for boring plots or movies with no story at all? Are our beliefs and attitudes being challenged in creative ways, or are they being ignored in favor of "popcorn and candy for the mind"?

Accept for one version of the trailer, where they mix the visuals with A-ha's - Take On Me.

It hits me on the personal level because it is the tune where I grew up with. The riding speed of the keyboard notes synchronized with the memories of me speeding on my bicycle back then.

I guess visual cues of nostalgia has to be attached together with the appropriate sound to trigger that internal memory of the past.

Planned to catch it in 3D but was too late. 7.jpg

(Ready Player One)@panza2913d

  9. Ready Player One: not amazing, but worth watching sorta@gooddream2953d

I think it is kind of evident in the name of the film that this movie is designed to attract gamers to watch it, but in case it wasn't... well... yeah, they're looking for gamers and in that aspect this film is reasonably good.

I was actually surprised to find out at the closing credits that Stephen Spielberg was the director of this movie and if he has ever been in charge of a movie so dependent upon CGI up to this point....well, i am not aware of it.

    MV5BY2JiYTNmZTctYTQ1OC00YjU4LWEwMjYtZjkwY2Y5MDI0OTU3XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNTI4MzE4MDU@.V1_UY1200_CR90,0,630,1200_AL.jpg

This movie is action-packed that is for sure, but it also has a forewarning for the future built into it as the people in the film are entirely too attached to their online personas. I think all of us can take a look at ourselves in this: If you haven't been the person upset about a person spending too much time on their phone in public.... it is because you ARE that guy.

The people in the film are dealing with VR headsets rather than just instagram so provided Samsung doesn't start duping us into buying a slightly more expensive phone because it comes with a VR headset we are probably safe for a while.

The story takes place something like 50 years in the future (I am not going to look this up for accuracy because it doesn't matter) and basically everyone lives in a virtual world because doing so is preferable to being in their own real-life environment. People's entire lives are based around being able to afford additional equipment in the virtual world as well as being able to have upgrades in real-life in order to upgrade their online experience.

    fans-are-raving-about-steven-spielbergs-ready-player-one-here-are-the-reactions-from-sxsw-social.jpg full suit, full experience

The person who created all of this, and I don't remember his name inside the film, has created a contest upon his death for the people inside of "The Oasis" (his utopian online world) to find 3 keys in order to become the new CEO and owner of the company. This is made public and obviously it is incredibly difficult to find these keys.

The group of people that are the good guys are established in the first 20 minutes of this 2.5 hour film and because it is an American film you are already very very aware of the fact that the person that you first see on the screen is going to emerge victorious in the end. It is just a question of how he is going to get there.

It annoys me that this film takes the usual Hollywood film progression of :

    • outsider accidentally stumbles upon something amazing
    • big corporate interests try to keep him (or her) out of it
    • outsider meets some people to help him along the path
    • outsider emerges victorious

but i will give it some upticks but these are almost certainly because of ease of accessibility because Stephen Spielberg knows people and copyrights don't apply to him:

    • There are lots of nostalgic stuff including Godzilla, The Iron Giant, The Delorian from my favorite movie of all time, and even references to The Dark Crystal
    • Coleco-Vision and Atari 2600 games are played inside the film... and most of the film takes place inside a game anyway. It's like a film-game-game vortex
    • The special effects (CGI) are pretty awesome
    • Erlich from Silicon Valley voices what is without a doubt the best character in the entire movie

readyplayerone2.jpg the character is only awesome because TJ Miller is doing the voice

So this film says a lot about technology addiction and I believe they are correct in that and I like that the lesson they are trying to suggest towards the end is that maybe we should step away from it a tad. I say this even though I speak to you via one of those channels right now.

Here is the trailer that i didn't watch until 30 seconds before posting it here.

*there is an awesome Depeche Mode song featured in the trailer*

So anyway. I think the movie was too long. Despite the fact that I have loved video games and have a strong appreciation for the really really old-school games being represented in modern films I found myself frequently bored during this movie. I am resisting the urge to give it an additional point due to the fact that Steven Spielberg was involved because other than ET and Back to the Future, i don't even know what that guy has done.... i just know the name.

It's an OK movie. They aren't going to win any awards other than graphic-oriented ones (if they get that.) The acting is average and I wasn't brought to tears even once despite being quite emotionally fragile.

Therefore, "Ready Player One": get a rather unimpressive 5.5 / 10 overall.

Basically, watch it if your only other choices is to watch nothing ....or that Korean movie I reviewed yesterday .

I welcome your feedback, rantings, and suggestions.

  10. [Movie Review] Ready Player One: The Film That Will Sell VR Headsets@alexbeyman3001d

@amandarichards and I once again took advantage of recent sunny weather to go out and enjoy life. It just so happened while we were out that besides the sunny weather, many other things came together nicely. For example, we came upon a Ben n' Jerry's that was handing out free ice cream cones.

We then discovered that a McMenamins bar/theater (where you can drink and order food for delivery to your seat) was showing Ready Player One...starting like five minutes from when we inquired about it and bought tickets. Nice when shit just works out like that, isn't it?

@amandarichards liked it even more than I did, I think because she went in with zero expectations, knowing nothing about it in advance. I was hopeful but also biased towards liking it because of the heavy focus on VR. If 'The Lawnmower Man' was the film that conveyed VR to the public in the 1990s, 'Ready Player One' will represent VR to today's public.

It ticks all the same boxes Spielberg movies often do. But it's greater than the sum of its parts well, exceeding the confines of that formula. It made me legitimately laugh in several places. Only the romance fell flat because of how quick and forced it was.

The love interest felt certain he would be disappointed by how she looked in real life. It turns out she's supermodel hot, but has a mild discoloration on her face, a birth mark she is inexplicably insecure about. It was a missed opportunity in my book for the protag to instead fall for his best friend, a manly cybernetic brute who it turns out is a woman.

She was not conventionally attractive though. Gotta have the hero fall for the conventionally attractive chick I guess. What a boringly safe decision. Oh well. The plot was otherwise entertaining and interesting, if a little bit silly in some parts.

It gets away with some of that because much of the film takes place in The Oasis, a VR world similar to today's VR Chat but with better graphics, animation and so on. The protagonist lives with his aunt and her abusive boyfriend in one trailer of hundreds stacked vertically in towers.

His knack for uncovering the hidden secrets, or "easter eggs" of the Oasis soon nets him the cash reserves he needs to buy better VR gear, competing more effectively to find the remaining secrets before other players do.

Also competing with him are thousands of paid egg hunters, or "gunters" in the employ of IOI corporation. They seek to take over the Oasis and make it into an advertising platform with tiered memberships, similar to what's going to happen to the internet now that Net Neutrality has been overturned.

The pop culture references are thick in this film. Not a second goes by in the Oasis where you don't spot characters from familiar movies and games. It's impressive they got the rights to all of them, but I imagine the owners of all those IPs were also eager for the free product placement, so to speak.

The challenges faced by the protagonist and his friends were imaginative, such as the hotel from The Shining. The friends kind of came out of nowhere after he said for the first half of the film that he works alone. I get the sense that this is a byproduct of cramming the plot of the book into the time constraints of a major motion picture.

Perhaps a director's cut will alleviate some of these small problems with pacing, and flesh out the story more. As-is, it's a visual treat, a thought provoking and rousing spectacle which will no doubt make everybody who sees it feel strongly tempted to run out and buy an Oculus or Vive.

That's the real purpose of it from my perspective, besides the political commentary on what sort of place shared VR worlds ought to be versus what Facebook is trying to turn them into. This may be a film future generations look back on from within a heavily stratified, advertisement saturated VR world, laughing at how naive it was to believe there was ever any chance of preventing that outcome.

That's what we go to the movies for though, isn't it? To peer voyeuristically into a dazzling alternate reality where, unlike our own world, the good guys usually win. I give Ready Player One an 8/10, docking points because there were aspects of the plot that could have been more daring.

Specifically who wound up being his love interest, and who didn't. But also not making the hot girl he falls for in the Oasis turn out to be some gross hairy fat guy irl, like his friend warned him about. That would have been more "narratively correct" and his long time friend becoming his lover would've pried a tear or two from my jaded eyes.

    Stay Cozy!

  11. Ready Player One--Movie Review--Lot's of fun--just not like the book.@mctiller3001d

I admit it.  Ready Player One is one of my favorite books I have read over the last few years.  It was just pure unadulterated sugar and joy,  When I read it I knew it was going to be a movie eventually, but I wasn’t sure if it could successfully brought to the screen.  Learning that it was going to be directed by Spielberg made me excited about the possibility that it could be done well.

I can’t help it.  I come into this movie with the book in my head. I loved this book.  It brings an ear to ear grin on my face.

(The cover of the great book.)

The creator of the Oasis, James Halliday, has passed away.  Before he passed he created an Easter Egg and hid it in the Oasis.  It can only be found with clues that are given out with various contests.  And the Easter Egg is complete control of the Oasis and half of the shares of company that created it, worth half a trillion dollars.

So, this is a world wide Easter Egg hunt.

But after five years no one has found the first clue, so interest is waning.  And this is where the movie begins.

The novel focused on the main character Wade Watts and his love of all things pop-culture from the 1970s and 80s and his love for games.  The movie goes straight to the point that this is happening in a dystopian future, people in live in houses that are stacked one on top of each other, and then there is the Oasis.  The global virtual reality set-up.  The movie focus’s on the VR aspect of the world.  The pop-culture references come in as an aside.  It’s never explained why Wade, who goes by the name Parzival in the world of the Oasis, drives the Delorean from Back to the Future.  I mean not that we need an explanation, but there is the Delorean and no mention of it.

Not focusing on the pop-culture aspect is a minor nit-pik, but it is not as emphasized as much as it is in the book.  And for die hard book fans that is going to be noticed.

Lots of things to look at, but no time to enjoy them...

The movie is a lot of fun. Seventy-five percent of the movie occurs in the Oasis, so most of the movie is pure CGI.  And it looks cartoonish, but I think that is the idea behind the Oasis, it’s VIRTUAL reality, not actual reality.

Wade doesn’t have actual friends in the real world, so he has to make them in the virtual one.  Aech is a mechanic.  How does a mechanic work in a virtual world? I mean it’s virtual?  Why isn’t everyone a mechanic. I have no idea.  Just go with it. But the work he does do in the virtual world is top notch.  During race across a New York landscape he saves a well-known player Art3mis from zeroing out of the game.  Zeroing out mean losing all the money and assests a person has spent their life acquiring.  About as close to dying as you can really get in the game.

Because the reward is pretty much unlimited money, a video game conglomerate Innovative Online Industries (IOI) has amassed an army of Gunters whose sole purpose is performing in the tasks to find the Easter Egg.  IOI is led by Nolan Sorrento, a one-time intern of James Halliday and business partner Ogden Morrow.  Sorrento is played to perfect sliminess by Ben Mendelssohn, who was Orson Krennic in Rogue One.

The movie moves faster than the novel, and that’s good for action.  And there is a lot of it.  What is missing is the enjoyment of the world.

There is a wonderful scene that lives in the world of The Shining, this does not occur in the book because they could not secure the rights to Blade Runner, which does play a big role in the novel.  I don’t want to give too much away, but when the characters enter the world of The Shining, the virtual reality feel disappears.  Spielberg brings the look and feel of Kubrik’s famous film to life.  I’m not giving anything away, but this maybe the most satisfying scene in the movie.

    Final Thoughts

I recommend this movie.  It doesn’t reach the top of the pantheon of other Spielberg movies, but it is fun and energetic.  If you’re a fan of the book and 80s pop culture, check the movie out now in the theater.

  12. Review Film: Ready Player One (2018)@film-trail3001d

In 2045 when the world becomes slum due to overpopulation, pollution, corruption, and climate change, humans choose "escape" to OASIS (Ontologic Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation), the virtual world of James Halliday (Mark Rylance) creation accessible with VR glasses where a person is free to be anyone and do anything. In 2018 when the world often forgets to have fun, human beings should "run away" to Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg's imaginative world, which should be enjoyed wearing 3D glasses. Costume XI can maximize the sensation of natural character OASIS, while the 4DX format produces similar effects for the film, Derived from a phenomenal novel titled the same as Ernest Cline (also a scriptwriter with Zak Penn) filled with popular 80's culture references, it is clear there is nothing more appropriate to work on the screen adaptation in addition to Spielberg. First, he was among the most influential figures that shaped the popular culture of the day through the Indiana Jones (1981-1989) trilogy, to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). Secondly, there is no director as great as he is about stringing a thick visionary entertainment with creativity filled with large-scale special effects. Again, NOTHING.

Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), an 18-year-old orphan who lives in a slum dwelling in Columbus, Ohio, is our protagonist. Like people who feel more at home in cyberspace (read: social media) because they feel the original figure is lousy, Wade also spends the majority of his time in OASIS. Using an avatar named Parzival, Wade followed the competition looking for the easter eggs that Halliday left behind before he died. The winner will inherit OASIS ownership plus other prizes. The problem is that the obstacles that must be dealt with are very difficult, not to mention the threat of Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) and its VR equipment provider, IOI (Innovative Online Industries), who is ambitious to master OASIS, I hope Ready Player One spends a little more time dive into the world and more characters, but Spielberg's splendid of spectacle makes me not mind jumping into bombastic action right from the start. The race crosses the OASIS version of New York where giant iron balls, T-Rex, and King Kong have been waiting to thwart efforts to find easter eggs. This is only the first stage, but that fails to facilitate the Parzival struggle with his "Back to the Future" car through the finish line. Similarly Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), a figure of famous motorcyclists from the animated Akira who became adult Parzival.

The race proved how Spielberg understood how to build tension. The ruins of the building that make cars collide with each other, the rage of King Kong that destroyed the player's vehicles like cheap plastic toys, not just a CGI parade. There are dimensions, weights, rather than computer-generated images that fly without body mass. The blessing, the impression that the characters are really in danger is felt. Stretching, but Spielberg never neglected to inject a sense of fun.

Ready Player One invites us to celebrate life, both in the real world and virtual. The balance is needed. Spielberg wants us to know what it feels like to live our lives to its fullest. The trick is to eliminate the set piece that is filler. In total there are 3 keys needed to get a gift from Halliday, and each phase of the key search contains a moment of ignition and Spielberg class visualization of cline written ideas. In the hands of Spielberg, the most important thing is not "how many characters and / or references popular culture?", But how are all summarized into a solid scene? The manuscript eliminates the "show-off" impression, so the tour surrounds the Overlook Hotel, a zero-gravity dance floor with Stayin 'Alive, to the "three gigantic" struggles at the climax of the natural phase of the stage that must be passed, There's still a blemish. As a film about the invitation to not forget reality, the movie's "real world" scene lacks allure. I feel like the humans in it who choose OASIS life rather than reality. The only moment (close to) the reality that appears interesting lies towards the end, Mark Rylance shows the rich acting sensitivity as Halliday, the introverted genius man also awkward about socialization. But in the emergence of awesome, wrapped in Spielberg-style warmth, Rylance shows that Halliday has changed. More mature, more mature, more wise. We are all capable of experiencing similar changes as long as not too long settled in cyberspace.

  14. Movie Review: 'Ready Player One' (2018)@showflix3007d

    source

Ready Player One is a spectacular light entertainment, made with skill and integrity. Every space on the screen is filled with sensational visuals and powerful special effects. The film is an ambitious project of veteran director Steven Spielberg , who took the idea of potential virtual reality and transformed it into a sensational blockbuster built with CGI magic and crammed with pop culture references. And here Spielberg does not hold back at all.

    source

Spielberg is the expert in these kinds of things. The filmmaker has donated some works that became a technical pioneer in blockbuster movies, ranging from Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park , to The Adventures of Tintin . Ready Player One is not a pioneer in any way, but this movie is a top achievement in the art of special effects. The source material is a novel entitled the same work of Ernest Cline , which I do not read, but it is a heavenly pleasure for the nerds. If so, then the novel is getting the equivalent of a movie adaptation.

There are a lot of pop culture references and the appearance of the iconic character from childhood that we will meet almost in every frame-some of which were created by Spielberg himself through his movie. It will diminish its excitement if I reveal it, but I can say that its property is not limited to Warner Bros. (which produces this film) but also cross-country and * cross country. Some of them will make you fall. Eh, how come like clickbait article title?

Sounds like a nasty formula to scoop up the dollar at the box office. However, my worries faded as the story began. Spielberg wants to make more movies than that. The basic plot and character are used as placemats to place references that will be analyzed by the reference experts later, but the film also has a good story involving . Spielberg did not let the reference game divert the narration. Reportedly the reference in the movie is not as much in the novel. Spielberg, with the help of scriptwriter Zak Penn , just picked an important part of the story. This makes the audience who do not get the same reference can still enjoy it, although it would be more broken for the audience who get .

The setting is in 2045, when the world becomes more chaotic than it is now. Poverty and overpopulation make the majority of residents have to live in containers arranged in stilts like towers. So it's better to spend time in OASIS, a virtual reality universe that might be called an interactive game but so fitting as an escape from reality because there we can be anything and do anything. This is where the fantasy comes true; monster, robot, giant, we can even become Batman. To get into OASIS, we only need to wear special glasses.

The creators are James Halliday ( Mark Rylance ), Steve Jobs of OASIS. Before he died, Halliday held a 3 level game for all OASIS users. Anyone who can complete all levels, is entitled to inherit all Halliday's assets and, most importantly, full control over OASIS. True, the outline of the plot is similar to the narrative style of video games. So began a hard game involving all OASIS players.

At the heart of the story, the film is still a typical Spielberg family movie, where a child of innocence with great potential must struggle against the cynicism of the adult world. In Ready Player One , the boy is Wade Watts ( Tye Sheridan ), an awkward teenager who lives in one of the slums in Columbus, Ohio. When wearing special glasses, he becomes Parzival, one of the great avatars in OASIS. His friend is Aech, a stocky, half robot technician. Later, they will get acquainted with Art3mis ( Olivia Cooke ) is sexy and also not less good.

The tyrants Wade must fight are Nolan Sorrento ( Ben Mendehlson ), a former Halliday kid who plans to take over OASIS. He came up with a company that seemed to be specially designed to seize OASIS. Every day, Nolan sent dozens of professional players into OASIS to conquer the game. In OASIS, he gets help from a cunning avatar named i-R0k ( TJ Miller ), while in the real world his hoofs are the tough girl F'Nale ( Hannah John-Karmen ).

However, Nolan lags one step in one thing. The majority of the "gunters" (egg hunters) are a bit more superior, because the instructions for each mission are stored in a movie, comic, or game Halliday has ever devoured. Including personal life that is not so neglected by many people. Well, the latter became an ingredient for Spielberg to give a bit of sentimentalism. But this is not a heavy film. The moral message about the importance of the real world above the virtual world is only a point to close the film with a more positive tone.

The true nature of this movie is a vessel for Spielberg to unleash his most nerd side. The action scene is crowded. His energy makes the momentum of the film speeding. The opening action scene is a sequence of races that easily beat the coolest races in any movie. Various types of vehicles, ranging from trucks, batmobile, to Kaneda motorcycles from the Akira film, sped up its pace amid chaos over the Manhattan bridge involving T-Rex to King Kong. This visual parade does not make our senses overdose, because there is a sensation that makes us believe that Spielberg controls the chaos. There is also a relatively quiet sequence, wherein they re-scene from one of Stanley Kubrick's films. Please find your own.

Spielberg filled this film with plenty of characters and enough sequences to capitalize on many standard action films. Ready Player One is a movie that perhaps only can be made by sineas who have eaten a lot of salt acid world blockbuster. It's hard to imagine the movie can be as exciting and exciting as this if directed by a director other than Spielberg. You need to watch it on the big screen in order to feel the effects of the sakaw it causes. A special effect runs its hqq task in cinema, which is to move the narration. Spielberg also dynamically plays the focus between OASIS and the real world. Several times we are invited to follow the conflict in the real world, and the portion of the story in the real world helped stakes in the escalated virtual world. Vice versa.

Now Spielberg is already 71 years old, which is not presumptuous for us to call it elderly. However, seen from the energy, this film was made by a director who was 20 years old. Spielberg can be likened to the coolest opa of all time trying to impress her grandchildren. And he succeeded spectacularly. This is the most pure Spielberg movie after years. And yap, the ultimate movie for the nerds. I'm sure Spielberg had a great time. We also have fun. This is why we go to the movies.

  16. A Geeky Dad's Movie Guide to Ready Player One (2018)@hanshotfirst3011d

My son and I just returned from seeing a movie named after the book Ready Player One. I chose those words very carefully. Because I love the book Ready Player One so much, I think it would be a huge insult to say I saw the movie version of it.

Although the novel's author, Ernest Cline, has his name on the screenplay for this film, I find it very hard to believe he actually had anything to do with writing it... unless he has suffered some form of amnesia in the past few years.

To be honest, this movie seemed like it was written by someone who had never actually read the book. It is as if the writer of the screenplay either heard someone talking about the book or read a two paragraph summary of it. This movie completely missed what made the book so much fun.

If you have never read the book, you may actually really enjoy this movie. Even if it is based on a hollow summary of the novel, the basic story is so much fun that it would be tough to make a movie of it that wasn't entertaining. There is plenty of action, some funny lines and some fun pop culture references. However, I would imagine that someone who has not read the book will have a different set of complaints than mine. Although the movie is listed at two hours and twenty minutes, that includes the credits. In my opinion, any movie that is based on a book needs to be at least two hours and thirty minutes (of actual content) long or it feels hollow. I would guess that people who have not read the book may be confused about some of the details.

*This book is far better than the movie that shares its name.*

As soon as I saw Steven Spielberg was involved in this movie, I immediately got nervous. Although I have loved many of Spielberg's movies, I immediately knew he was an odd fit for this. This movie should be about Spielberg and his heyday... not be made by him today. I wish this movie were made by fans who grew up watching Spielberg, Lucas, and Hughes. This is why I went in with VERY low expectations. Because of this I did not hate the two hours I spent. But I definitely never want to see it again. I was prepared for an utter train wreck and ended up seeing a couple of fender benders that will cause a two hour gaper's block.

Although I had braced myself for the worst, I simply can't comprehend how the creators of this film completely missed the entire reason the book Ready Player One was so much fun. First and foremost, Ready Player One is about puzzles and hidden "Easter eggs". Not only was the book inspired by a puzzle from an Atari 2600 video game, the book itself was a puzzle. The first person who solved the puzzle won an actual DeLorean.

*Ernest Cline is so cool he has his own DeLorean... yet he is connected to this movie?*

To add to the fun, the puzzles are based on pop culture from the author's (and my) youth: the '80s. The next ingredient is exciting action. Sprinkle in some fun characters (who are puzzles themselves) who are trying to save a dystopia world and you have an incredibly entertaining book.

But this movie completely missed the main ingredient: puzzles.

There were almost none in the entire movie. The characters do find some clues but they are glossed over so quickly that the audience never gets to play along. They solve the puzzles as quickly as they find the clues. It was as if the writers wanted the audience to completely shut off their brains and just enjoy the special effects. Sometimes that is needed... but not when you have such a fun story. When I read the book, my brain was on high alert. Sometimes I had to reread pages in order to ensure I caught every reference and clue. I could have watched this movie while playing Zork on my laptop and I wouldn't have missed a thing. That is sad.

*An adventure game filled with puzzles that played a major role in the novel. How did they forget that the movie should include puzzles? They had all of the hints they could possibly need.*

I am still shocked that they didn't even bother to put a puzzle or "Easter eggs" into the final credits. That detail truly showed that the creators of this movie had no understanding of or passion for the novel.

The second ingredient of the successful novel was amusing pop culture references from the 1970s and 1980s. I was worried they would try to modernize too many of these. Surprisingly, that wasn't the problem at all. Instead they used the wrong pop culture references from these decades. Without spoiling the book or movie, War Games plays a major role in the novel. The movie replaces this with... The Shining. WTF?

They replaced a classic teenage 80s movie about solving puzzles with a deep and psychologically terrifying horror movie? They did so much to update the references for today's 13 year olds and then they toss in The Shining? That was a horrible choice (even though The Shining does contain many puzzles... they don't even bother ot use them in this film). If they wanted a movie with more action, there were a plethora of 1980s classic action movies to choose from. Here are some that would have made much more sense:

Red Dawn Escape From New York Die Hard Aliens Raiders of the Lost Ark Mad Max: Thunderdome Predator

*I think a puzzle involving this scene would have fit so much better in the movie.*

All of the scenes involving Dungeons and Dragons, Joust, War Games, Monty Python and The Holy Grail, and Pac-Man (I could go on but I hope many of you will still read the book and I don't want to spoil anything )are all gone. Some are replaced with... a car race. I have to admit, the car race did look cool. So if you don't care about the book you might like that. But if they really wanted to include a car race, they could have easily made it lead up to one of the challenges actually in the book. They had plenty of time to do both.

I saw this movie in a Dolby Theater, which makes everything better (except Red Sparrow), so please note that my opinion about the special effects is positively biased by that fact.

The movie does a fine job with the action sequences. There are plenty and they look very cool... when they in the Oasis. Basically everything that happens in the "real" world is a stupid waste of time. However, when the characters are in the Oasis, their avatars, vehicles and weapons are awesome. The only problem is that they purposely look like video game graphics so at some points I felt like I was just watching the cut scenes of my son's X-Box One games. They just happen to be the coolest cut scenes I have ever seen. These battles were the only reason I feel the movie wasn't a complete waste of time.

*The action looks like a video game... but a really cool one.*

As far as the characters go, the movie is so short (for a movie based on a novel) that I didn't feel like I knew any of them. If I hadn't read the book, I don't think I would have cared about a single one of them. They would have been just like the hollow avatars they use in the Oasis.

The plot involving the heroes trying to save the "real" world while winning the game is brought up in the movie... I guess. I think they were trying to save the world but I can't be sure if I know that because I just watched the movie or because I read the book multiple times. I have to reiterate here that everything that happens in the "real" world is a silly waste of time.

Normally this is where I would mention something about the actors' performances. But in this case, who cares? The only interesting things that happen take place when they are all cartoons. The voices were all fine. They neither added to nor detracted from the movie.

My 13 year old son hated this movie. He has read the book more times than I have. Although he and I prepared ourselves for the worst and lowered our expectations as much as we could, he didn't lower his enough. During the movie, he was very frustrated by the changes made to the tasks required to earn the keys. He could not figure out why some were changed at all. He turned to me several times and said, "I did not like that. This is bad." After the movie, he told me, "That is the first time a movie has ever been worse than I expected." (And he even loved The Hobbit trilogy.)

*Even teenage Groots get pissy. But I think my son is justified in this one.*

Perhaps part of that is because he is an angsty teen now and not everything is happy puppy dogs and ice-cream anymore. He may be looking for reasons to get pissed. In this case, he found one. To him, this creative team ruined one of his favorite books.

Even though I am nowhere near as upset as my son, neither of us can figure out how they got this movie so wrong.

This movie should have been a 13 yard field goal. Instead Lucy yanked the football away and it landed flat on its back.

I need to get this taste out of my mouth. Time to go read the book again.

    Geeky Dad's Movie Guide

Number of times I fell asleep: 0 Number of eye rolls: 3 (This could have been higher. Everything in the real world is stupid.) Number of face palms: 1 (See above) Number of times my kid asked to go to the bathroom or get food out of sheer boredom: 0 Number of times I checked steemit: 0 Did my kid like it: No!!!!! (But yours might if they have never read the book.) Would I see it without my kids: I will never watch it again but I had to see it once. Full price/Matinee/Rental/Free/Not worth the time: Free (Perhaps matinee if you have never read the book. You might be entertained if you are a blank slate.)

    Images 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

*Before I go, I really need to stress how disappointed I am that the ending credits were not an "Easter Egg" hunt. That would have fit the book so perfectly. It was a complete no-brainier. That fact alone shows just how badly they missed when they made this movie. It was incredibly lazy when it should have been sensational.

  17. Ready Player One - Movie Review@coldsteem3011d

    image.png

When I saw the first trailers for Ready Player One, I had a bad feeling. It look like commercialized, hackneyed Hollywood at her worst. With the second trailer, I began to think "this may be something special." Not every film that is over-hyped misses the mark. In the case of Ready Player One, my first impressions were wrong. It hits the mark. And it is a bullseye.

    image.png

I love science fiction. I also enjoy post-apocalyptic and/or dystopian films. Dystopian science fiction is a treat. Particularly when it is done right. It is my understanding that the movie rights for this film were secured by Warner Brothers one day after the release of Edward Cline's debut novel of the same name. Cline was tasked with adapting the book to screenplay along with writer Zak Penn. With Stephen Spielberg directing, this film laid a solid foundation for a successful film (or will that be franchise?)

    image.png

Wade (Tye Sheridan) lives in a dystopian high rise. Not your typical high rise, but rather, a series of aging mobile homes stacked atop each other, fastened together with rigging that is sketchy at best. Like most people living in the dreary world of 2045, Wade escapes his reality by visiting a virtual reality game called OASIS. The oasis is a place where you can be anyone. In Wade's case, he is Parzival, a perpetual gamer who lives for the game. His real world is a bit more bleak, living with his aunt and her loser boyfriend in the stacks, as the stacked mobile homes are commonly known. With the death of OASIS' creator, James Halliday (Mark Rylance) a contest is launched to determine control of the OASIS (as well as Halliday's considerable wealth). Like most people living out the meager existence that is 2045, Wade spends his time inside the OASIS attempting to solve the puzzles and win the game.

Wade has a good friend in the game, Aech/Helen (Lena Waithe) who he generally seeks out when he is in the game. As the quest begins, he ends up befriending additional players who become known as the High Five. The other players are Art3mis/Samantha (Olivia Cooke), Sho (Philip Zhao) and Daito (Win Morisaki). The challenges created by Halliday require a thorough knowledge of pop culture as well as Halliday's own life. A virtual library of video clips contain the knowledge players need to attain in order to solve the puzzles. Wade and his friends help each other along while facing threats inside the game that eventually find their way into the real world. Together, the friends may have the opportunity to create a better future.

    image.png

Ernest Cline is only slightly younger than me. That makes sense. Ready Player One is a pop-culture-sweetheart-kiss to my generation. The references, music, themes and characters pay homage to the golden age of gaming. The film incorporates some of the most visible cultural images of our generation and manages to cram them all into a single film. At least a representation of them. Generally, I would call that a recipe for disaster. When you try to do too much, it is easy to get distracted. But Ready Player One does it almost as an afterthought. Very little direct attention is paid to many of the luxurious details. From the DeLorean to Chucky, the film is filled with, well...Easter eggs. I guess that is appropriate with Easter upon us. But moreso as the easter egg (treats that are hidden or discretely placed in a film or video game) are a central theme of the film. You have to pay close attention because they are everywhere.

    image.png

So how does the writing hold up? Very well, I would say. There are several characters important to the story, yet we manage to get a decent amount of character development. The film is built around a quest that happens within the game as well as action in the real world. The writers deftly navigate between the two without getting bogged down. The film covers a lot of ground, but manages to feel epic at two hours, twenty minutes without bogging down. The pacing was excellent with a nice narrative arc. If there were a fault with the pacing, it would be tying things together at the end. The ending seemed to drag out just a bit too long. But overall, the writing was spot on.

    image.png

Tye Sheridan first hit my radar with his exceptional performance in the film Mud. He carried that film. He is joined by several other actors I really like. Simon Pegg being among my favorites (when are we going to get another Pegg film? I love that guy's warped sense of humor). I liked Olivia Cooke in the film Thoroughbreds. She was solid in this film, although I wasn't fully buying the chemistry between her and Sheridan. Ben Mendehlson was typical slimy bad guy material. He delivered in the role. I remember first watching him in A Place Among the Pines and enjoying his performance. There were some actors unknown to me in this film as well. They had smaller roles, but as a whole, were all solid. There weren't any performances that felt flat to me.

    image.png

I'm dwelling a bit on the look and sound of this film. Because this film delivers the looks and sounds of my younger years. The soundtrack was an excellent blend of 80s music, starting out with VanHalen's Jump and cycling through some of the most memorable (if not the best) songs the 80s had to offer. I mentioned that the look of the film packed a lot in. But I neglected to mention the actual look of the film, which was phenomenal. The CGI was spot on, creating rich, intricate scenes that were virtual eye candy. The OASIS was a visual delight. Plenty to absorb. I rarely watch a film twice. This is one that is so laden with Easter eggs that it begs a second viewing. With Moviepass, why not? I may have to go back for a second helping.

    image.png

Ready Player One was given a reasonable PG-13 rating. They kept it fairly clean. While there is plenty of simulate violence, the gore factor was minimal. There was some language and suggestive material, but the film played it straight. In one throwback scene, a naked lady exits her bathtub. Keen camera angles and carefully placed objects prevent any nudity. While the film has plenty of violence, it is contextual. Overall, this is a film for the family, as long as younger viewers aren't easily scared.

    image.png

Ready Player One exceeded my expectations. The fan-boys out there might be on the 10/10 bandwagon. I though it was solid cinema. I loved the references, I loved the characters and I loved the visual appeal. It was so visually rich, you are bound to miss a lot of details with only one pass. The story was fairly original. It was fairly predictable, but it was unique. It was a dystopian tale with hope. It was a memory montage. It incorporated many cultural icons into a single consciousness that never become laden in spite of the information overload (or length). This film deserves to do well at the box office. But I think it may have a niche following. I guess the box office results will ultimately tell that tale. This one is worth seeing. 8/10.
