When I enjoy a movie, I like to look for more works by its director, or its screenwriter, and as I discover other films as good as the first, or better, I increase the number of titles by that director on my list. It was what happened to me with Ingmar Bergman, for example, or with Denis Villeneuve. However, it hadn't occurred to me that I had several films by a director unknown to me on my to-watch list. And that's what happened to me with Lars von Trier.

Fue lo que me ocurrió con Ingmar Bergman, por ejemplo, o con Denis Villeneuve. Sin embargo, no me había ocurrido que tuviese en mi lista de pendientes varias películas de un director desconocido para mí. Y eso fue lo que me ocurrió con Lars von Trier.
My extensive to-watch list includes titles like The House That Jack Built, Nymphomaniac, Breaking the waves, Melancholia, all by the Danish director, but until a few days ago I hadn't seen any of his films. Since I had some free time on Sunday, I wanted to see a long film and I chose Dogville, directed by Lars von Trier and starring Nicole Kidman alongside Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Stellan Skarsgård, James Caan, among others.
Dogville tells the story of Grace (Kidman), a woman who arrives in a remote town in Colorado, United States, which bears the name of the film. Grace is on the run from a gang of gangsters who seem to be after her to kill her. In the town she meets Tom (Bettany), a writer and philosopher obsessed with morality and the correct behavior of humanity, who offers his help and suggests that she hides in the town. Persuaded by Tom's words, the neighbors agree to hide Grace in exchange for her becoming part of the community by carrying out some tasks or contributing in some way.
Dentro de mi extensa lista de pendientes figuran títulos como The House That Jack Built, Nymphomaniac, Breaking the waves, Melancholia, todas del director danés, pero hasta hace unos días no había visto ninguna de sus películas. Como el domingo tuve algo de tiempo libre quise ver una película que fuese larga y escogí Dogville, dirigida por Lars von Trier y potagonizada por Nicole Kidman junto a Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Stellan Skarsgård, James Caan, entre otros.
Dogville cuenta la historia de Grace (Kidman), una mujer que llega a un remoto pueblo en Colorado, Estados Unidos, que lleva el nombre de la cinta. Grace va huyendo de una banda de gángsters que parecen pereseguirla para matarla. En el pueblo se encuentra con Tom (Bettany), un escritor y filósofo obsesionado con la moral y el correcto proceder de la humanidad, quien le ofrece su ayuda y le sugiere que se esconda en el pueblo. Persuadidos por las palabras de Tom, los vecinos se avienen a ocultar a Grace a cambio de que se haga parte de la comunidad desarrollando algunas tareas o contribuyendo de alguna forma.
However, not everything is so simple. Dogville is a small, airtight town with only one access road and no exit to the other side where the town ends at an abandoned mine and a rocky mountain. In other words, its inhabitants are almost isolated from the rest of the country and seem to not want, and even reject, contact with the outside world. Hence it is not easy for Tom to convince them to help Grace.
Sin embargo, no todo es tan sencillo. Dogville es un pueblo pequeño, hermético, con una sola vía de acceso y ninguna salida hacia el otro lado en donde el pueblo termina en una mina abandonada y una montaña rocosa. Es decir, sus habitantes están casi aislados del resto del país y parecieran no querer, e incluso rechazar, contacto con el mundo exterior. De allí que a Tom no se les haga fácil convencerlos de ayudar a Grace.
Also, if you've heard the saying "Small town, big hell", I think Dogville's miniscule size is inversely proportional to the hell it becomes for Grace. Because everyone at first seems excessively cautious, but friendly; uncomfortable with the idea of receiving a foreigner, but we think that they are afraid, that they are averse to change. And when we see that Grace, little by little, is gaining the trust of the most difficult elements of the town, we think that, as Tom says, they are all good people. Two elderly women who run the only store in town, a blind man who never leaves his house, a woman who lives in the church and takes care of the place until a priest arrives in town, a married couple with seven children, a woman who takes care of her handicapped sister, a writer...everyone in Dogville seems like a nice person, and Grace wins them all over with her honesty, hard work, and charisma. But, as historical wisdom has taught us, appearances are deceiving.
Además, si han oído el refrán de "Pueblo pequeño, infierno grande", creo que el minúsculo tamaño de Dogville es inversamente proporcional al infierno en que se convierte para Grace. Porque todos al principio parecen excesivamente cautelosos, pero amables; incómodos con la idea de recibir a una forastera, pero pensamos que tienen miedo, que tienen aversión al cambio. Y cuando vemos que Grace, poco a poco, se va ganando la confianza de los elementos más difíciles del pueblo, pensamos que, tal como lo dice Tom, todos son buenas personas. Dos señoras mayores que regentan la única tienda del pueblo, un ciego que nunca sale de su casa, una mujer que vive en la iglesia y se encarga del lugar mientras no llegue al pueblo un sacerdote, un matrimonio con siete niños, una mujer que cuida a su hermana minusválida, un escritor... todos y cada uno de los habitantes de Dogville parecen buenas personas y a todos se los gana Grace a fuerza de su honestidad, su trabajo y su carisma. Pero, como la sabiduría histórica nos lo ha enseñado, las apariencias engañan.
When the police arrive in town looking for Grace and begin to watch them all to find the fugitive, the inhabitants of Dogville will demand more and more things from Grace that compensate them for the danger they run by giving her shelter so that our protagonist will learn, from a brutal and cruel way, that in that town kindness, tranquility and generosity are very relative things. I can recall few stories in which a character has been as humiliated and outraged as Grace's in Dogville. One by one, all the inhabitants of the town take advantage of her in one way or another and condemn her for a thousand and one things, without realizing that they hate her precisely for doing what they do to her, without seeing that it is they who, little by little, little, they commit the most vile and disloyal acts that anyone can commit. Even Tom himself, her strongest defender and who claims to have fallen in love with her, turns his back on her when she needs him most. Grace's situation can be summed up in a three-stage sentence: first, they don't want her to hide in town and they reject her; then, they don't let her go so they imprison her; and finally they expel her because they do not want to continue seeing their own cruelty and humiliation reflected in the eyes of the foreigner.
Cuando llega la policía al pueblo buscando a Grace y comienzan a vigilarlos a todos para dar con la fugitiva, los habitantes de Dogville exigirán a Grace cada vez más cosas que les compensen el peligro que corren al darle cobijo de manera que nuestra protagonista aprenderá, de un modo brutal y cruel, que en ese pueblo la bondad, la tranquilidad y la generosidad, son cosas muy relativas. Recuerdo pocas historias en las que un personaje haya sido tan humillado y ultrajado como el de Grace en Dogville. Uno a uno, todos los habitantes del pueblo se aprovechan de ella de una forma u otra y la condenan por mil y un cosas, sin darse cuenta que la odian precisamente por hacerle lo que le hacen, sin ver que son ellos quienes, poco a poco, cometen los actos más viles y desleales que puede cometer alguien. Hasta el propio Tom, su más férreo defensor y quien dice haberse enamorado de ella, le da la espalda en el momento en que ella más lo necesita. La situación de Grace se puede resumir en una condena de tres tiempos: primero no quieren que se oculte en el pueblo y la rechazan; luego, no la dejan que se vaya así que la encarcelan; y finalmente la expulsan porque no quieren seguir viendo su propia crueldad y humillación reflejada en los ojos de la forastera.
It's a hard, cruel, humiliating story, emotionally difficult to digest, philosophical, of social reflection, of analysis of human behavior that can make the viewer uncomfortable. And I think one of the reasons you focus so much on the story is because of the setting. Despite being a story that takes place in a small town, it was not filmed in any town but in a simple setting, indoors, as if it were a play. The streets and their names are written on the ground, the houses are lines painted on the surface, the trees are drawings, the doors do not exist (although the characters open them and knock on them), there are no windows, the mine is wood in a corner... that film set may seem boring to some, especially considering that the film is almost three hours long in its original version, but I think it's a plus, not only because the proposal it's daring and different, but because it helps us to focus on the story and the characters
Es una historia dura, cruel, humillante, emocionalmente difícil de digerir, filosófica, de reflexión social, de análisis del comportamiento humano que puede incomodar al espectador. Y creo que una de las razones por las que uno se concentra tanto en la historia es por el escenario. A pesar de tratarse de una historia que se desarrolla en un pueblo pequeño, no fue filmada en ningún pueblo sino en un decorado sencillo, en interiores, como si fuese una obra de teatro. Las calles y sus nombres están escritos en el suelo, las casas son líneas pintadas en la superficie, los árboles son dibujos, las puertas no existen (aunque los personajes las abren y las golpean para llamar), no hay ventanas, la mina son unas maderas en una esquina... ese set de filmación puede parecerle aburrido a algunos, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que la película tiene casi tres horas de duración en su versión original, pero creo que es un plus, no sólo por lo atrevido y diferente de la propuesta, sino porque ayuda a que nos concentremos en ls historia y en los personajes.
I would say yes, it's like watching a play with a harsh and cruel story. Dogville is a film that begins as a drama, progresses as a thriller and ends with a cruelty worthy of its characters. I liked the script, how different the proposal was, I loved Nicole Kidman's performance and I can't wait to see something more from this director who, in Dogville, created a jewel of experimental cinema and one of the best 21st century movies according to the BBC, have you seen any other Lars von Trier movies? which one do you recomend me?
