Esta serie de una sola temporada es de las que no sabemos por qué no ha tenido mayor repercusión o por lo menos, por qué no ha tenido segunda temporada al menos.
Porque el tema que toca es de una actualidad que está desgarrando no solo familias, sino sociedades y hasta países.
La trama gira en torno a una nueva droga para el dolor "no adictiva" que una gran farmacéutica logra sacar al mercado con una etiqueta que básicamente miente sobre sus efectos.
La verdad es que la descubrí ayer, y pude ver solo el primer capítulo, pero ya se vislumbra conspiraciones, complicidad gubernamental, falta de escrúpulos, y una sociedad destruida bajo la promesa de una vida sin dolor y sin consecuencias.
This single-season series is one of those we don't understand why it hasn't had more impact or, at the very least, why it hasn't had a second season.
Because the theme it touches on is so current that it is tearing apart not just families, but societies and even countries.
The plot revolves around a new "non-addictive" painkiller that a major pharmaceutical company manages to bring to market with a label that basically lies about its effects.
The truth is, I discovered it yesterday and only watched the first episode, but already you can foresee conspiracies, governmental complicity, lack of scruples, and a society destroyed under the promise of a life without pain and without consequences.

Якось у розмові зі своїм фітотерапевтом я порушила тему сучасної фармацевтики. І в кінці нашої жвавої дискусії він підсумував наступне: «Безперечно, фармацевтичні препарати здатні тримати людей «на плаву» й довгий час подовжувати їм життя. Але для багатьох вони стають своєрідним щоденним «наркотиком», на який люди підписуються добровільно, прирікаючи власне здоров'я на поступовий занепад, а фармацевтичний бізнес на процвітання».
Це, звісно, думка фахівця, який має інший підхід до лікування. І ви можете її не поділяти. Але я вирішила використати її як невеличку преамбулу до міні-серіалу «Ломка», в якому проблема страшної залежності від медичного препарату поставлена досить гостро. Після перегляду серіалу я в черговий раз замислилася над питанням «охорони здоров'я». Бо, як на мене, ці два слова починають віддалятися одне від одного, а в окремих випадках стають несумісними, як, зокрема, і в цій 8-епізодній драмі.
У міні-серіалі «Ломка» від HULU ідеться про опіоїдну епідемію в США, пов'язану з фармакологічною компанією Purdue Pharma. Ця компанія, яка по суті є великим родинним бізнесом, винайшла «чудодійні» пігулки Оксиконтин, які начебто мають рятувати людей від болю. Та насправді Оксі (так його називаються пацієнти), калічить людські долі, оскільки ті, хто почали його приймати за медичним призначенням, стають наркозалежними. Але Purdue Pharma закриває на це очі, і усіляко ухиляється від прямих доказів побічних ефектів від препарату, бо її мета — якнайшвидше просунути Оксиконтин серед лікарів, аби ті призначали його своїм пацієнтам за першої ж нагоди. Бо для фармацевтичного гіганта понад усе важить не людське здоров'я, а мільярдні прибутки.
Від успішних продажів дозування препарату збільшують врази, бо багаторівневий маркетинг невпинно працює. Ба більше, новий бізнес-план передбачає виготовлення Окситантину для дітей, а дорослим рекомендують приймати його пожиттєво. І фарма-магнати без будь-яких докорів сумління ідуть на це, бо зламані, понівечені долі простих людей багатіїв не обходять. Небайдуже лише принциповим помічникам прокурора штату, які розпочинають розслідування справи. Та воно триватиме роками, позаяк судова система й впливові зв'язки Purdue Pharma ставатимуть їм на заваді й чинитимуть жорсткий опір.
В основу серіалу покладена книжка американської журналістки Бет Мейсі «Ломка: дилери, лікарі та фармацевтичні компанії, які узалежнили Америку» / «Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America» by Beth Macy (2019).
Майкл Кітон, який грає лікаря Семюеля Фіннікса, Кейтлін Дівер у ролі Бетсі Маллум — молодої дівчини, яка померла від Оксі, та Пітер Сарсгаард у ролі помічника прокурора Ріка Маунткасла справляють дуже сильне враження. Та в цьому серіалі мене найбільше пройняла не так гра акторів, як щире співпереживання й чуйне ставлення до простих людей, яких так болюче й драматично торкнулася опіоїдна криза.
Dopesick is a new and interesting big pharma based crime drama about the opioid epidemic of the late nineties and early noughties in American society, which can be found on HULU were it first aired on October 13th 2021.
The story follows Purdue Pharmaceuticals and their relentless, immoral and illegal moves to push Oxicontin as a revolutionary drug for pain relief, with a less than 1% chance of addiction.
The illegal methods used to on board Doctors, Dentists and Hospitals through a deceptive sales team and the funding and establishing of national pain relief organisations and charities to further their own agenda for global reach and maximum profits through narratives founded on lies.
Their campaign included threats and intimidation of doctors and pharmacies that get caught up in their web of deceit and want to stop supplying their products only to be threatened with law suits, as well as the bribery and poaching of FDA officials, false advertising, the creation of terminology, pamplets and leaflets to push their products in Hospitals and surgeries across the United States and the complete refusal to accept the damage their products are doing to the people that use them and the wider community.
In this series which is based on facts we get to understand the at times terrifying lengths big pharmaceutical companies will go to, in order to further an agenda and make profits, even at the expensive of those they claim, they are aiming to help.
During this period DEA officials observe as the opioid epidemic grows out of proportion in the mining towns and cities first targeted by the Purdue sales teams, even as crime goes to all time high levels, violent crime increases and the prison population almost doubles, the DEA run into numerous obstacles in their investigation into a Pharmaceutical company that has cleverly attempted to keep themselves at a distance from the illegal actions taken on their behalf.
What follows as the team of dedicated law enforcement personal along with DAs go on the offensive is an on going game of Cat and Mouse, to limit Oxicontins distribution of their products and services for almost every moderate form of pain relief, to finding witnesses and whistle blowers that can help them gather the information needed to take on one of the biggest philanthropic families in American History.

MY CONCLUSION
The series is a well paced graphic and factual account of how Big Pharma was allowed to the circumvent procedures put in place to protect the public, through the use and employ of criminal methods designed to deceive the very people trying to help those suffering serious pain related problems.
Dopesick is a gripping TV series and was very well produced and directed, with a strong cast and excellently executed narrative and dialogue, a very enjoyable and convincing watch for everyone.
Whether you like the genre or not this story opens your eyes to the dangers of trusting the powers that be to have your best interests at heart especially when it comes to any form of medical intervention.
