  1. Downsizing (film): a decent movie that bombed at the box office@gooddream2385d

Matt Damon is one of my favorite actors of all time. That being said, i think his performance in Downsizing is one of the weakest of the entire cast. I suppose you can't do A+ work all the time.

    downsizing.jpg source

A sci-fi film of sorts, Downsizing revolves around the scientific discovery that any living thing can be reduced in size thousands of times without any ill-effects. The benefits of being shrunk down to 5 inches tall are plentiful, the main one of which is that life becomes considerably less expensive. People who were struggling financially suddenly find themselves being capable of living a lavish lifestyle, but of course these worlds must be contained and they will now rarely interact with "normal sized" people.

It seems as though everyone lives a life of frivolity in these communities, until Dave Johnson (Damon) discovers through chance that the poor do in-fact exist in these communities and they live in the same squalor that exist in the normal-sized world.

This is where we meet Ngoc Lan Tran, a cleaner with an artificial leg who is brilliantly played by Hong Chau. Her cute, sometimes brash, and unintentionally humorous method of depicting a Vietnamese woman who gets straight to the point with her pidgin English, is easily the best character and acting in the movie. This Vietnamese cleaning woman, despite living in near poverty, seems to enjoy life a lot more than Dave does, and he ends up learning a lot about life from her.

She ended up getting nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance and she definitely deserved it.

Perhaps I found this more amusing that most people would because most of the English-as-a-second-language Asians that I meet speak in a similar fashion to Ngoc Lan Tran and I am quite certain that I sound the same way (but in reverse) when I speak Thai as a second language.

The film lost a ton of money against its $70 million budget and I don't understand why. I suppose it might be because the "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" theme just isn't interesting to people. I know I wouldn't have bothered if it hadn't featured Matt Damon.

I've said it before about Hollywood, but they do seem to be incapable of making a film without slipping some sort of PC, political message, into just about anything made these days, and that is definitely apparent in this movie. I'm not gonna say what it is but when you get to it, maybe you will have a eureka! moment and then roll your eyes the way I did.

I enjoyed this movie, mostly because it seemed like a wonderful concept that I would definitely take part in if the technology existed. It was released in 2017 and completely passed me by without having ever heard of it. I guess that is what Netflix is for these days.

    Overall rating!

  2. Կարճ (Downsizing, 2017)@panza2903d

  3. Review Film: Downsizing (2017@film-trail3026d

Some of the critics or general audiences' negative response to the seventh film Alexander Payne (The Descendants, Sideways) is the majority of which leads to the conclusion that too many ideas are tried to be summarized and fail to hit the target. They want the film to leave a significant impact, move the heart, or perhaps participate in a better world. As Paul Safranek's (Matt Damon) great wish contributed to saving the environment and humanity in it. Unfortunately, he does not feel happiness, Charged with financial problems, Paul invites his wife, Audrey (Kristen Wiig) to follow Downsizing program alias reduce the body to improve life (1 dollar normal world can be worth 1000 times in mini world) as well as participate to overcome the problem of overpopulation. At least that is the content of Paul's mind and the scientists behind the creation of such technology. Immediately, they discover how it needs to be repaired not just the infrastructure, but the man himself.

People who think only of themselves and hurt each other dominate Downsizing. Paul was struck when he learned that Audrey had canceled his intention to shrink in the last second. Payne has implied it to the audience since the interview scene. Paul looked convinced, while from her gaze, Audrey was visibly shrouded in disbelief (Wiig sold the doubts well). We realize that, but Paul does not. Audrey was guilty of abruptly canceling the plan just because her eyebrows and hair were cut off, but Paul who failed to understand her wife's anxiety was the same.

Paul is like an activist who boasted about a variety of issues but nothing more than a selfish figure who forced his will. But Paul is hard to be happy. Then he met Dušan Mirković (Christoph Waltz), a party lover who openly declared following Downsizing program for the sake of business. Dušan is always happy in the midst of honesty about his ignorance. Until Ngoc Lan Tran (Hong Chau), a Vietnamese activist who was forced to shrink her body was present. In the eyes of Payne, Ngoc Lan is the ideal figure. Working as a janitor, Ngoc Lan is paid with leftovers or medicines he gives to those in need. He does things with real impact.

Hong Chau is amazing playing Ngoc Lan. When Waltz's eccentric expression and Damon's "only" face became a comedic foundation, Hong Chau also brought the burden of lifting the dramatic part. She is funny and energetic. Using accented English, Hong Chau speaks as he wishes, handling the film's appeal whenever he's involved on screen. Entering the last round has shown sensitivity in a monologue by Payne who was arrested using close up without breaking so that the emotional strength of the actress plastered clearly. The monologue should seal his position as an Oscar nomination.

Payne threw a lot of glance issues to simplify the conclusion because it emphasizes "we have to do good." But is not that the root of all progress? Goodness and happiness. That is why, instead of exploring the complexity of the high concept, Payne invites the audience to laugh through a visual comedy full of weirdness, from the naked head and eyebrows of Matt Damon to the naked bare body being picked up like food. The director and scriptwriter are too relaxed, producing a series of moments that should end a few minutes faster.

    RATING (6/10)

  4. What would you do if science could make you rich? - Movie Recommendation - Downsizing (Alexander Payne, 2017)@vincentnijman3065d

    5vVvTa3C5m17SnP4A5HF57XsA5n-0-230-0-345-crop.jpg

Imagine a world where your money is worth a couple of hundred or a thousand times its current value. Would you like to live there? What if people told you it was actually possible but they needed to shrink you for it? Would you consider that?

While being presented with the above question - while watching this movie - I thought of my own situation. With the money that I accumulated since I got into cryptocurrency (last May) and on Steemit (last June), I can hardly survive in the current society. If it would be worth a hundred or a thousand times more, I would be a rich guy, though. It's these kind of interesting parallels that elevate a movie for me and make it actually one that I might remember for a while.

Paul Safranek, played by Matt Damon, is presented with the above dilemma. He dislikes his job and the kind of life his wife wants to live is hardly possible without any drastic changes.

I heard very different opinions on this movie beforehand. Some liked it, others didn't. I didn't let that influence me though. I always try to dive into a film as open minded as I can be. This time, I had hardly any expectations. The movie's theme - shrinking people to a couple of inches in length in order to deal with overpopulation of the world - appealed to me and I had enjoyed earlier movies by its director, namely: Sideways (2004) and Nebraska (2013)

I invited my mom to come along with me. We had seen Nebraska in cinema together a couple of years ago, I pretty much know her taste in films and usually know to find movies that both of us like. I'm also pretty sure she enjoys watching movies with me.

Right, mom? I know you will be reading this one of these days ;>)

Besides one or two exceptions - Michael Haneke's 'La Pianiste' (The Piano Teacher, 2001) being one of them - my mother usually tends to like the films that we watch together. The fact that (watching a) film is more than just escapism for me probably also makes it a little more special for her. I taught her a thing or two about movies.

Alright, enough talk on why my mom and I went to see this movie. I'm probably the only movie critic (for lack of a better word) to talk about their mother in their reviews. Although it would be an interesting theme while writing on a film like Hitchcock's Psycho. Now back to the film itself, Downsizing...

We enjoyed it a lot. Although it has a run time of 135 minutes - 2 hours and and a quarter - and there was no break, we didn't feel bored at all. It did not feel too lengthy. I had no urge to check my watch or phone. The length worked fine for the type of story. And it is not even an action movie, quite the opposite.

You don't find these kind of films, based on a well written screenplay, with a story that - although it seems to be a comedy - has this slightly realistic second layer to it. It's a not too far-fetched look into the future. I don't want to get too political here but go watch the trailer and - if you're not completely isolated from what's happening in the world - you will see that this satire definitely makes some valid points.

Okay, I will end it here with 5 reasons to actually watch this movie

    1. It has an original and pretty intelligent screenplay
    2. acting and dialogue are very good
    3. Downsizing is - at times - very funny
    4. It's the best Matt Damon Movie I've seen so far (action fans will probably disagree with me here but I don't care)
    5. It's the perfect date movie

I made the date movie thing up. You know I watched it with my mom, right?

Now go watch the trailer and, if you like what you see, the movie itself:

  5. Downsizing movie review@mediaguy3073d

It was much better than I expected. From the trailer I thought it was going to be some crappy romantic movie about some guy finding love after his wife leaves him. But it was much more than that. A lot of crazy stuff happens in the movie. They take you to a lot of places. There is a lot of subtle humor that got me laughing pretty hard.

  6. Downsizing - Movie Review@coldsteem3109d

    image.png

Downsizing looked like an interesting film from the trailers. I have anxiously been waiting to see it. If nothing else, I saw it as potential redemption for Matt Damon after the flop of his last film, Suburbicon. Downsizing premiered yesterday, so my wife and I went to the theater to catch it on opening night. We were the only people in the theater. Not a good harbinger of things to come.

    image.png

Story summary does not give away any major plot lines Paul Safranek (Damon) is an educated working-class stiff. He was studying medicine, but returned to Omaha to care for his ailing mother. He took a job as an occupational therapist at Omaha Steaks to pay the bills. Safranek lives in the house he grew up in with his wife, Audrey (Kristen Wiig). Audrey has expensive tastes. The Safranek's look for a nicer house, but their debt-to-income ratio makes a move an impossible dream.

Several years earlier, Dr. Asbjornsen (Rolf Lassgard) discovered a solution to overpopulation and climate change. The solution? Downsizing. By miniaturizing people, the impact on the climate would be exponentially reduced. When Safranek's friend describes to him the standard of living increase created by miniaturizing, he and his wife decide to visit a popular planned community called Leisure Land. Their net worth is calculated at 152,000 dollars, which translates to more than 12 million dollars in Leisure Land. Champagne dreams are just around the corner. After Paul undergoes the irreversible treatment, he learns his wife chickened out at the last minute. The subsequent divorce leaves Paul with a far more meager lifestyle than he bargained for. Nothing seems bound to go right for Paul. But his big heart and gentle demeanor may open new doors, as well as his eyes, to opportunities right under his nose.

    image.png

Downsizing is a tough story to dissect. It is a hodgepodge of ideas that feel like they were hastily thrown together to create a plot. Yet there really isn't a plot. The film is part love story, partially a commentary on current events, part political statement (maybe) and part rambling. The film is all over the place. Particularly after Paul downsizes. The story meanders around, leaving huge plot holes as to how things became the way they are and why. I say that the film "may" be part political statement. I use the qualifier because the point was really never connected to anything tangible. The story was parallel to the statement and not wired to it. Much of the film felt that way. Like there is a point to be made, but we never get around to the point of the film. It just sort of meanders around and then ends after too many extended scenes that lack interest.

    image.png

Matt Damon was solid in this film. His working class stiff portrayal seemed genuine. His ability to adapt the likability of a hard luck loser was evident in this film. He helped shore up a story that simply was not worth telling. He meets a friend in this story, Ngoc Lan Tran (Hong Chau), who helps guide his understanding of the world around him. Chau was the highlight of this film. By far. Her performance was exceptional and her character was interesting. Chau has a staccato delivery of her lines, with broken English that doesn't really feel "put on." Her ability to be blunt, demanding and sweet (simultaneously) is a testament to Chau's performance. She made this film more enjoyable than it might otherwise have been.

    image.png

Downsizing is substantially too long at two hours, fifteen minutes. There are scenes in Norway that involve a hippie-like commune that become self-absorbed. It was horrible. I could feel the seconds ticking away. The film could have easily cut twenty minutes and not lost much impact, if any. In fact, it may have helped Alexander Payne focus his story. The film attempts a bit of shock value for what it lacks in plot. The film has full frontal male nudity (lots of it), sexual content, lots of F bombs thrown together (which was a character inconsistency for me as well), drug use and death. This is not a film for children. The R rating from the MPAA was well deserved.

    image.png

Downsizing had incredible potential. The film could have explored a million different opportunities of viewing the world from five inches tall. Instead, the story never found a focus. It meandered around, introduced interesting characters that never did anything truly interesting, and ended without delivering any substance. Lots of films have "open" endings. They allow the viewer to cogitate on what they have seen and determine what they think happened in the end. To be successful, a story like that must be focused first. This one was not. It was weak. The concept was brilliant, but the delivery lacked cohesion, focus, consistency and even credibility at times (given that you accept the broader premise). I am not going to recommend this film. It had some redeeming qualities, but not enough for a recommendation. I am dead even on this one. 5/10.

  7. Downsizing what a weird and cool movie premise@mediaguy3138d

Scientists develop a way to shrink humans. A bunch of people start getting shrunk. Things are much cheaper when you are small, a homeless guy might be a millionaire. But there is a catch. The process is irreversible. And it looks like Matt Damon's wife backs out at the last minute and is left alone. I think it is worth watching for the weird premise of literally downsizing alone.
