To talk about Duel is to delve into the cinematic work that marked the beginning of Steven Spielberg's career as a feature film director. This 1971 psychological thriller had a significant impact on the film industry and popular culture. The performance of Dennis Weaver, the film's protagonist, was key in conveying the tension and fear that develops throughout the plot. In addition, Duel has become a cult film due to its unique style and the way it addresses universal themes such as fear, paranoia and the struggle for survival.

The plot centers on a man who is chased and stalked by a mysterious truck as he travels down a desolate road. Throughout the film, an intense game of cat and mouse develops between the protagonist and the truck driver, which turns into a struggle for survival. Characteristic of the film is the lack of dialogue and the minimalist structure of the plot.

The historical context in which the film is set is the 1970s, a time of social and political changes in the United States. The Vietnam War and civil rights movements were in full swing, which is reflected in the paranoia and sense of insecurity that permeates the plot of Duel. Spielberg succeeds in capturing the tense climate of the time through the story of an ordinary man who finds himself confronted by an inexplicable and terrifying threat.

Steven Spielberg, who at the time was a young director without much experience in the film industry, demonstrated his talent for creating suspense and keeping the viewer on edge with his first big screen film. The film's simple but effective plot allows viewers to identify with the protagonist and feel his anguish as the tension builds.

The impact of Duel on Spielberg's career was immense, as it opened the doors to Hollywood and allowed him to demonstrate his ability to tell stories in a visually stunning way. The fame and recognition he achieved with this film established him as one of the most influential directors of his generation and set the stage for a prolific career in the film industry.

Dennis Weaver, known for his role in the TV series Gunsmoke, was the actor chosen to play Duel's tormented protagonist, an ordinary man caught in an extraordinary situation. Weaver's performance is central to the development of the plot, as he manages to convey his character's anguish and desperation masterfully. Her performance contributes greatly to the emotional impact the film has on the audience.

In the field of cinema, Duel has influenced numerous directors and screenwriters who have found inspiration in his narrative style and ability to create tension. It is impossible not to mention the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock. Spielberg has cited Hitchcock as one of his main influences and it is evident the imprint that the legendary director has left on Duel, both in the construction of narrative tension and in the handling of atmosphere and suspense. Another important name in the genre is John Carpenter, whose film The Thing From Another World (1982) shares certain similarities with Duel in terms of the sense of paranoia and isolation it manages to create.

The film has aged well over the years and remains a benchmark for future filmmakers. Spielberg's ability to create tension and keep the viewer on edge is undeniable, and the film has been the subject of study and analysis by film students, critics and academics.

  2. Cine TV Contest #38 - Favorite Movie Vehicle : Duel (Steven Spielberg's feature film debut) .@nbarrios671316d

Suspense, action, thriller, a nightmarish tale, fear of the unknown, a senseless hunt. This is Duel, the first film that Steven Spielberg manages to release in theaters. The filmmaker shows us a nightmarish story where a salesman named David Mann (Dennis Weaver), travels the roads of southern North America very close to the border with Mexico, with his red Plymouth car, however this trip will not be at all quiet to suffer the bestial harassment of a huge truck completely ramshackle and rusty, we sense carrying gasoline, for no apparent reason.

    Source

The driver of the truck, always remains hidden in the cabin, although sometimes we observe a few shots in which of course we will not see his face, which accentuates the feeling of uneasiness in the viewer.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOHuDMuMnes)

This film makes us feel inside the road, crossing vast wastelands, the gasoline can almost be smelled, we are cornered by that truck to the point of distressing us as much as the driver of the red vehicle. It is a hunt that lends itself to existentialist and diabolical readings, but that is left to the judgment of the desperate viewer between the scares and chases presented in the film. There is no explanation as to why this truck is stalking Mann.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMgCg6SaS6U)

There is an unsubstantiated hypothesis that this truck represents the co-worker who tried to seduce Mann's wife and against whom he did not defend her, this is reproached by her in the phone call at the beginning of the film. It is that feeling of guilt and fear that haunts him and that he must face once and for all as if it were a duel. As I said it is pure lucubration.

The truck is the enemy showing a disturbing aspect with a color given by the most extreme rust, it looks like a wounded animal with cracked or punctured parts.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m9aeCeHbiQ)

It is a film that I saw on television in 1977, and that here in Venezuela was shown in order to take advantage of Spielberg's success with the movie Jaws. When I was 10 years old I didn't even know who Spielberg was, but I saw his name a lot as a director in the movie theaters.

The movie amazed me and kept me entertained for a long time in front of the screen despite the countless commercial breaks, it kept me in tension until the final moments where the protagonist had to face with cunning the wickedness and viciousness of the truck.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PunLPMBpxGc)

In this David vs. Goliath struggle, Dennis Weaver gives an excellent performance as a helpless driver, about to explode in a panic crisis.

The film is very simple but impressive and dates from 1971 and was initially broadcast on television, but given the excellent reception of the telefilm for its narrative pulse, aesthetics and epic tone was screened in 35 mm in 1973, extending its length from 74 to 91 minutes, being a precursor for its level of suspense of Jaws (1975) by Steven Spielberg himself.

This road movie was shot in thirteen days, an achievement by anyone's standards. It was filmed almost entirely on location with a low-rider racing vehicle in order to film the overtaking from car to truck and vice versa.

Spielberg used up to seven cameras in order to finish the film on time. The film was assembled and edited in three and a half weeks.

The script is by Richard Matheson, (relevant creator of horror, science-fiction and fantasy stories), is simple and brilliant, where fear emerges from what is not seen.

This is the only scene where we will be able to appreciate in some way who the driver of the truck is.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LX9Y4e-3Qpk)

Its director Steven Spielberg manages to make the protagonist's sensations manifest from the images, since Duel is a film where there is hardly any dialogue, and the voice and voice-over of the protagonist is used punctually when it is necessary to verbalize his thoughts.

It is a cult gem that even today manages to put us in suspense and also made Steven Spielberg known as a film storyteller, this happening years before he filmed Jaws.

A big greeting to the CineTV community, I present my post to participate in the initiative Cine TV Contest #38 - Favorite Movie Vehicle Link Here

  3. [ENG-ESP] RETRO-REVIEW: DUEL (1971) STEVEN SPIELBERG FILM -@fixie1910d

    duel-2.jpg

Duelo or as it became known in the Spanish-speaking world, "El diablo sobre Ruedas" is Steven Spielberg's first film of 1971. This film was his debut as a filmmaker and he made it known that he could tell a fascinating story with few resources. Framed within suspense, it tells us the life of an ordinary man who travels down a road on a work trip. The tour passes without much shock until an old trailer appears on the scene with a very aggressive attitude that will trigger disastrous events kilometers later for the protagonist.

    Duel-el-diablo-sobre-ruedas-5.jpg

The atmosphere of the film begins very calm. A man traveling on the run to attend to a work matter. The protagonist is a man who soon reveals his calm personality and who tends to avoid confrontations. It is precisely this characteristic that will make you face the driver of the trailer. The first approach between the two men occurs on a section of the road where the protagonist overtakes the truck without problems. But then minutes later the truck aggressively and quickly overtakes the protagonist which alerts him to the intentions of the truck driver.

After some exchanges on the road where one driver tried to overtake the other and almost died in a crash, the protagonist stops at a service station to call his wife. This fact is very interesting and very important to understand the personality of the protagonist. In the first place, because he went a few kilometers before arriving at this service station, he almost collided with another vehicle because of the truck, when he arrived at the service station to refuel, the truck also arrived but he did nothing, he did not simply complain about it. he stares from his car watching the truck driver who never shows up, only his boots are seen. Then the protagonist gets out of his car and calls his wife, in the conversation and reveals that she suffered an episode of harassment by a stranger in the presence of her husband, who is the protagonist, and he did nothing to defend her , she claimed that he was not man enough to defend her from a stalker. So here it is revealed to us that the protagonist is someone docile who evades confrontations and before other subjects. Just what is happening to him now with the truck driver.

When the truck reveals its murderous behavior, it does nothing but play cat and mouse with the protagonist. The protagonist driving his car always lets us see his inferiority complex. Making a comparison of both vehicles, he humiliates himself by saying that his machine is slower. This has a lot of readings on a psychological level. The brightest and most suspenseful moment is the restaurant scene. After an escape, the protagonist collides with a fence and enters a restaurant to relieve the shock. While there he begins to think about what is happening and the times he has been close to death because of the truck. He sits down and asks for an aspirin and then goes to the bathroom to calm down, returns to his table to order soup and to his surprise he hears the noise of the parked truck. Look out the window and you can see it, like a beast resting, waiting outside the prey cave to sink its fangs into it as soon as it comes out. The exhaust pipe smokes in accordance with the noise of the heavy engine, it looks like a drooling hunting dog that has a skittish hare cornered.

Spielberg introduces us with great camera close-ups to the mind of the protagonist and makes us suffer from his paranoia. When he sees the truck parked outside the restaurant, he assumes that the driver is in there very close to him. You go to the bar and all the truck drivers wear similar clothes, a jean shirt, a hat, jeans and boots. He analyzes each one and in his mind imagine the moment where he approaches them apologizing and with the intention of buying them a beer. He knows that it is useless, and the most horrible thing is that each driver feels observed and stares at him for a few seconds. There is not a single word only looks that come and go and a man trapped by his cowardice. He goes to a table and sees that there is a man isolated from the rest he concludes that he is the murderous driver of the truck and confronts him

Out of the confrontation comes a fight where the unknown trucker leaves the restaurant annoyed. The protagonist stares out the window to see in which vehicle he is going and to his surprise, he does not go in the killer truck but in a small van. The confusion leads him to sit down again and stare at the rest who are still in the restaurant. He watches each of the suspects and none of them leave in the truck, the mechanical beast keeps drooling from devouring his prey that he knows he can't stay there all the time. When most of the drivers have left suddenly the truck also begins its march. He couldn't see who got into it .. He runs out trying to catch up with the driver and he can't. This dangerous game begins again. He goes back to his car and gradually goes down the road, hoping not to cross it on the road.

After the events in the restaurant and some assassination attempts on the highway there are some scenes that seem memorable to me. The first one is the protagonist outside his car in the middle of the road and in the distance the truck waiting for him. It reminds ME of old west movies and gunfighting. Not for nothing does the film have that name and the atmosphere also indicates it. Then it is an image of the truck in the rear view mirror when it is about to ram the protagonist's car, the diffuse reflection of the environment but focused on the truck I think that is how a deer would see a hungry lion. And the creepiest and most terrifying scene is the truck inside a tunnel with only the headlights on. It is undoubtedly an allusion to the supernatural, the machine and its yellow eyes lurking in broad daylight. The iron beast waits in the deep and only the stiff engine is heard.

The tunnel scene is memorable because the protagonist tries to help a school bus that does not start by pushing it with his car, however he cannot. However, the truck appears and stays in the tunnel for a while observing everything and decides to intervene, the scared protagonist starts as he can and walks away from the school bus, he passes by one side at full speed of the truck and when crossing the tunnel he looks like the truck was able to make the bus start. This scene lets us see why the protagonist feels this inferiority complex, he could not help his wife from the abuse of a stranger or some children on the bus and all this situation that he goes through is because he is unable to help himself.

    duel (1).jpg

    1971-Plymouth-Valiant-12.jpg

    duel-film-spielberg.jpg

The climax of the film is when the protagonist is fed up with being chased at the top of a mountain, he crashes his car against the truck, putting a briefcase on the accelerator and jumping before crashing. The truck cannot see the abyss in front of it and falls into the depths with a huge explosion. The protagonist, as in an old west duel, is watching how he could kill the beast, there are shots where blood and oil are dripping in the same way. One of the truck's wheels keeps turning until it stops, which is a symbol that the truck has died, the yellow-eyed mechanical beast has come to its bloody end. This driver was feared on the roads and had never been caught, on the front fenders he wore the license plates of his victims, he was a fearsome psychopath, an abominable predator whose jungle is the road. A weak character faced the greatest challenge of his life, death by a stranger. I think that from now on, after living this experience, you will be able to face other difficulties.

The uncomfortable atmosphere of this film is graduated, the camera games and close-ups have the perspective of getting into people's minds. You can feel the pressure on the protagonist's chest because of what is happening. There are some filming errors but they have more to do with the budget than with the script or the development of the story. There are usually a lot of reflections but this does not take anything away from the film. Spielberg opens his universe of monsters and the first of them is a demonic truck that is the master of the asphalt, a serial killer of unsuspecting city dwellers who will live in hell. Spielberg with this his first film would gain popularity and then he would make us tremble with Tiburon and Jurassic Park. This movie terrified me as a child and still does. I hope you liked this short review and review of a great tape. See you later.
