Enchanted

Hey internet folks! How are you? It's been a few years since I last saw this movie. I watched it a while ago and I think I even reviewed it here. However, it's one of those movies that, as you watch it, you can find new things to reflect on, especially when you reach adulthood and look at everything with a critical eye. At the time, many people thought this movie had the same intention as Shrek: to mock traditional Disney movies or, rather, the absurd plots of fairy tales. However, I believe what they intended was to analyze love itself from different angles, and I'm going to explain why.

Hace unos años que yo no veía esta película, la vi hace tiempo y creo que incluso la reseñé por aquí, sin embargo es de esas que a medida que la ves, es posible encontrar nuevas cosas para reflexionar, en especial cuando llegas a la adultez y lo miras todo con ojo crítico. En su momento muchas personas llegaron a pensar que esta película tenía la misma intención de Shrek, mofarse de las películas tradicionales de Disney o más bien la trama absurda de los cuentos de hadas, no obstante yo creo que lo que pretendían era analizar el amor en si desde diferentes ángulos y les voy a expliar porqué.

Giselle is a girl who literally lives inside a fairy tale. She constantly sings and fantasizes about true love. Suddenly, she stumbles upon an ogre that the kingdom's prince is hunting, and when he rescues her, they both believe they've found the ideal partner they've dreamed of their whole lives. However, the prince's stepmother, the queen, is a wicked woman who wants to separate them. So, with Nathaniel's help, she manages to send Giselle to New York, which represents the "real" world. There, she meets Robert (a successful lawyer who makes a living primarily from handling divorces) and his daughter Morgan, a beautiful girl who is captivated by Giselle and her personality. However, Morgan is somewhat isolated from fairy tales because her father doesn't allow her to read them, claiming he wants her to lead a realistic life, free from fantasy influences. Along the way, many entanglements and situations arise that gradually change the characters' perception of reality and lead them to a broader understanding of what love truly means.

Remember that humans mostly perceive the world and even external emotions according to their own experiences. From this perspective, we can understand that Giselle's vision was idealistic because she came from a fairy tale. That's why she wasn't surprised when the prince told her, "We'll get married tomorrow." In Andalasia, although there were evil characters like the queen, people didn't have too many questions about falling in love; that initial attraction was enough. Robert, on the other hand, comes from a great disappointment (his first wife). This left him with trauma that he is somehow passing on to his daughter Morgan through his "realistic view of the world." For him, "happily ever after" doesn't exist because he isn't willing to commit completely; he simply lives in the moment. And this, naturally, affects his relationship with his current partner.

Recuerden que mayormente el ser humano percibe el mundo e incluso las emociones externas de acuerdo a sus propias experiencias, partiendo de este punto entenderemos que la visión de Giselle era idealista porque salió de un cuento de hadas, por eso no le extrañó que el principe le dijera ("nos casaremos mañana") porque en Andalasia, si bien existían personajes malvados como la reina, la gente no se encontraba con demasiados cuestionamientos para amar, tan solo bastaba con esa primera atracción. Robert en cambio viene de una gran decepción (su primera esposa) esto le dejó un trauma que de alguna manera le está traspasando a su hija Morgan a través de su "visión realista del mundo" para él no existe un "felices para siempre" porque no está dispuesto a entregarse por completo, simplemente vive el momento, y esto además, como es lógico, afecta la relación que mantiene con su actual pareja.

But the time Giselle and Robert spend together teaches each of them to see life from a different perspective, influenced by each other's ideas. It's not that Giselle became pessimistic and Robert idealistic, but rather that he learned that love is built day by day with small details, and that it doesn't necessarily have to fail. Meanwhile, Giselle learned that it takes more than simple attraction, that love is a deep feeling, that there are good times and bad times in a relationship, but that everything is based on trust, respect, and communication. Small details are also part of that whole.

Pero la convivencia entre ambos personajes (Giselle y Robert) les enseña a cada uno a ver la vida con otro enfoque, influenciados en las ideas del otro, es decir, no es que Giselle se volviese pesimista y Robert idealista, sino que él aprendió que el amor se coonstruye dia a sía con los pequeños detalles, y que no tiene porqué fracasar obligatoriamente, mientras que Giselle aprendió que hace falta más que una simple atracción, que el amor es un sentimiento profundo, que hay momentos buenos y momentos malos dentro de una relación, pero todo se basa en la confianza, el respeto y el diálogo. Los pequeños detalles también forman parte de ese todo.

I loved the performances, and Timothy Spall's participation, whom I know as Peter Pettigrew in Harry Potter. I also adored the animation and the way the characters were portrayed in Andalasia; they're very similar to their real-life counterparts, especially Nathaniel (Timothy). Furthermore, that contrast between animation and live action serves to highlight the difference between fantasy and reality. The characters of Andalasia stand out in New York not only because of their clothing but also because of their personalities. However, this also makes the real world seem more "boring," so to speak. Perhaps it's because we know it's full of complexities, and we can even be the villains of our own story.
