Some anime tell a story.
Ergo Proxy makes you question reality itself.
Released in 2006 and produced by Manglobe, this cyberpunk series blends philosophy, mystery, and psychological depth into a world where perfection is just an illusion—and truth is something dangerous to uncover.
When I first watched Ergo Proxy, I didn’t fully understand everything.
But I felt it. And that’s what makes it special.
The story begins in Romdeau, a domed city where humans live under strict control alongside androids known as AutoReivs. Everything seems ordered, clean, and safe.
But when the AutoReivs begin to develop self-awareness due to a mysterious phenomenon, the illusion of control starts to collapse.
What was once a perfect system slowly reveals its cracks.
At the center of the mystery are the Proxies—powerful, enigmatic beings that challenge everything humanity believes about creation and purpose.
Through characters like Re-l Mayer and Vincent Law, the series explores identity, memory, and the nature of consciousness.
Who are we… when we strip away everything we think defines us?
Ergo Proxy doesn’t hand you answers.
It builds its world through atmosphere—quiet scenes, philosophical dialogue, and moments that feel almost dreamlike.
The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, but always intentional. It invites you to reflect instead of simply consume.
The soundtrack and visual tone reinforce this perfectly—cold, distant, yet strangely beautiful.
Ergo Proxy is not just about a dystopian world—it’s about the human mind. About identity, purpose, and the fear of discovering truths we may not be ready to face.
It’s complex, introspective, and deeply philosophical.
If you enjoy anime that challenge your perception and reward careful attention, Ergo Proxy is a journey worth taking.

Hello everyone, fellow fans of good stories, I hope you're all doing great today. On this occasion, I want to share a new review with you. I'm going to talk about an anime that's considered a gem by many. You've probably heard of it, or maybe not... perhaps it's only watched by "people of culture," or so they say, haha. Anyway, today I'll be talking about Ergo Proxy. I remember stumbling upon this anime a ton of years ago, during that phase every true fan knows: you've already watched all the good stuff and you start scraping the bottom of the barrel, watching whatever is put in front of you. There I was, and out of nowhere, I come across this super dark cover art, with a goth girl who looked like she was straight out of an Evanescence music video.
And I thought, "What the hell is this? There are no girls with superpowers or giant mechs... this can't be a good anime." I started watching it, but for some reason, I never finished it. Still, it always stuck with me... something stopped me from finishing it, but that nagging feeling remained. Now, filled to the brim with the sweet, sticky juices of stubbornness, I decided to go back. I needed to know why I had dropped it, and let me tell you something... the experience was... wow, on another level.

So, what's Ergo Proxy about? Phew, it's super hard to explain without dropping spoilers, but I'll give it a shot. Here's the deal: we're in a post-apocalyptic world, and what's left of humanity lives locked inside a domed city called Romdo. On the outside, it's like a perfect, high-tech utopia where people live alongside androids, the AutoReivs, who basically do all the work for them. But the problem is that a virus, the "Cogito," has been going around, suddenly giving the robots consciousness... a soul, so to speak. This is where our protagonist, Re-l Mayer, comes in—an inspector with the full-on look of a gothic metal star, who is sent to investigate some very strange murders.
And in the midst of it all, she comes face-to-face with a monstrous creature, a supernatural being they call a "Proxy." This encounter blows her mind, shatters her entire reality, and ends up dragging her, along with an immigrant named Vincent Law, into a mystery that threatens to tear down not only the perfect society of Romdo, but everything they believed to be true. From the very first episode, the atmosphere of this series grabs you and doesn't let go... and when I say it grabs you, it truly suffocates you. Ergo Proxy has a heavy, dark ambiance that slowly consumes you. I mean that literally, huh?
It's so dark that if you watch it with too much light in your room, you'll miss half of what's happening on screen. But mind you, it's not like that on a whim; it's key. There's a reason for it. If it were any brighter, it just wouldn't be Ergo Proxy. The animation quality is on another level, almost cinematic. The detail in the movements, in the faces... it's some of the most realistic I've seen in an anime. It's not at all the typical design of today's anime; this has a different vibe, it's much more mature, more raw. To top it off, the soundtrack is perfect for cementing that identity. The opening, "Kiri" by Monoral, is a gem that sets the mood, and the ending... well, the ending is the legendary "Paranoid Android" by Radiohead.

Now, let's be brutally honest, Ergo Proxy is going to make it tough for you. Its pacing is slow, like, really slow, and its story is super complex. The first seven episodes, if I'm being honest, were a real slog for me. There were moments when I already had my phone in hand, wondering if it was really worth continuing. The first three episodes hook you with the mystery, but then the plot hits the brakes until it almost comes to a complete stop. I think this is where the series loses 85% of the people who start it. I get it if you drop it. I really do. BUT, and this is a HUGE but, if you manage to stick it out and get past that part, the reward is one of the most intense experiences I've ever had with an anime. While you're slow-cooking at the beginning, the series is planting little seeds of intrigue and curiosity.
Suddenly, you get to episode eight, and something clicks in your head. You start thinking, "Wait a minute, why did they show that detail for a second? What does that mean?". The show keeps you guessing the whole time... it challenges you to pay attention, to connect the dots in a story where a ten-second scene you missed by blinking could be the key to everything. When you start to get the hang of it, it becomes an addiction. I, for example, had to watch it twice to be able to write a more or less coherent review, and it was worth every damn second. Because deep down, Ergo Proxy is much more than a sci-fi thriller... it's a massive philosophical journey. Its whole idea revolves around something simple yet profound: "I think, therefore I am." It's no coincidence the virus is called "Cogito," right? From Descartes' famous phrase, "Cogito, ergo sum." It's a journey to find oneself, where the main reason to exist is desire in all its forms: the desire to protect, the desire to be someone, even the most basic and carnal desire. It's like reading Asimov but with an existentialist, dark, and very, very unique twist.

And at the center of this massive journey are the characters. Let's start with Vincent Law, who drives the whole story. At first, the guy is a nobody, with no will of his own, literally a video game NPC. His only goal in life is to become a "model citizen." But when he gets caught up in the mess with the Proxy, his life goes to hell and a ton of blocked memories start to surface. He's forced to flee and confront a truth that shatters his mind, because, ladies and gentlemen, he himself is a Proxy who lost his memory. Seeing him evolve from a cowardly, personality-less guy to the one seeking all the answers is... man, a thing of beauty. Then there's Re-l Mayer. With her goth singer look, she's the complete opposite of a model citizen. She's rebellious, curious, and couldn't care less about following the rules. At first, I thought she was going to be the typical super-strong, perfect protagonist, like Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell.
But not at all! I was completely wrong. Re-l is a girl with a lot of limitations, stemming from how fragile she is. The poor thing goes through so much, and it's precisely that vulnerability that makes you connect with her in a way you don't expect. Her evolution, when she realizes there's a world beyond her golden cage, is incredible. I have to say, the voice actress in the English dub, which is the one I watched, did a spectacular job; she perfectly nailed every one of the character's emotions.
And, of course, I can't forget the charming Pino, a companion AutoReiv who, after getting infected with the Cogito, joins them on their journey. At first, her vibe is kind of creepy, you know? Repeating gestures and words as if she feels nothing. But as the series progresses, you see her slowly change, and it's impossible not to grow fond of her. Pino becomes the heart of the group, and her transformation into a being with a personality is one of the things that makes this anime a gem.

And let's see, who's behind this gem? Well, none other than the studio Manglobe (rest in peace, by the way) and the screenwriter Dai Sato. If the name doesn't ring a bell, let me tell you this guy is no rookie; he's the one who wrote for legends like Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. You can feel the same hand, the same intelligence and depth in the story, that care for creating complex worlds and unforgettable characters. In conclusion, is Ergo Proxy for everyone? No, not at all. Its incredibly slow start and super tangled plot surely made a lot of people drop it and kept it from ever becoming mega-popular. But if you're one of those who look for more than just brawls in every episode, if you're into detective dramas with a philosophical touch, and if you're willing to invest time in a story that will challenge you... then, my friend, you're in for a real treat.
For me, Ergo Proxy is a gem, a masterpiece. An 8.5/10, without a second thought. It's a unique experience that leaves you thinking and even gets you a little down. You wonder why the hell works of this caliber aren't more famous and just get left there, forgotten in a corner. It happens a lot in anime, right? In cinema, classics are respected, but here we often throw the old stuff in the trash just because something new and flashier came out. I truly invite you not to leave these gems behind, as they can easily compete with anything that has become famous over the years. And that's it for today's review! See you in the next ones, take care! Byebye!
Byebye!

Ergo Proxy is one of those anime that pulls you in slowly, like a dream you can’t quite wake up from. Released in 2006 and produced by Manglobe, this series is a cyberpunk masterpiece—a haunting blend of philosophy, dystopia, and psychological mystery.
When I first watched it, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But with every episode, I found myself questioning reality, identity, and the fragile line between humanity and the machines we create.

The story begins in Romdeau, a domed city where citizens live under strict control, guided by laws and AutoReivs—android companions that keep society running smoothly. On the surface, it’s a perfect system. But cracks appear when a mysterious virus grants the AutoReivs self-awareness, and a chain of murders begins to unravel the illusion of order.
At the center of this lies Re-l Mayer, an inspector whose search for truth leads her to uncover much more than she expected.

Enter Vincent Law, a man who hides secrets even from himself, and the enigmatic Proxies—godlike beings whose existence challenges everything humans believe about creation and purpose.

The anime’s atmosphere is dense and immersive. From its gothic-inspired visuals to its use of silence and haunting soundscapes, every frame feels intentional. The soundtrack blends industrial beats with ethereal tones, perfectly matching the show’s mix of beauty and despair.
Even the opening theme, "Kiri" by Monoral, sets the mood—mysterious, emotional, and unforgettable.
Ergo Proxy is not an easy watch—it demands patience and reflection. But that’s what makes it special. It’s an anime that stays with you, not because it entertains, but because it unsettles and challenges you.
If you’re looking for something atmospheric, philosophical, and deeply human, Ergo Proxy is a journey worth taking.

Hello dear friends, I hope you're all doing well. As a curious mind with a passion for science fiction and philosophy, my encounter with Ergo Proxy was a deeply marked experience. It's not an anime that's easily digestible; in fact, I'd go so far as to say it's a work that demands a considerable intellectual and emotional investment from the viewer. From the very first moment, its oppressive atmosphere and enigmatic narrative captivated me, inviting me on an inner journey through a bleak post-apocalyptic world.

The story of Ergo Proxy unfolds in Romdeau, a utopian city protected by a dome, where humans coexist with androids called AutoReivs. The initial premise seemed intriguing to me: the emergence of the "Awakening of Reason," a virus that grants consciousness to the AutoReivs, unleashing chaos and jeopardizing the apparent perfection of this society. However, what really hooked me was the introduction of Re-l Mayer, an inspector from the Intelligence Bureau who, despite her privileged position, feels a deep existential void. Her voiceover, full of cynicism and melancholy, was the perfect guide to delve into a mystery that, little by little, revealed itself to be much more complex than I imagined.

As Re-l investigates the crimes, he stumbles upon the existence of the "Proxies," humanoid beings with unknown power and significance. It's at this point that the narrative forks, introducing Vincent Law, an immigrant from Romdeau who, haunted by his past, flees the city after being pursued in connection with the Proxies. The duality of these two plots, initially separate but intrinsically connected, kept me on the edge of my seat. The way their paths cross and intertwine throughout the series is one of the script's great virtues, slowly revealing the truth behind their world and their very identities.

The beings that most caught my attention were the "Proxies," entities created by humans thousands of years ago during a global ecological catastrophe known as the "Migration." Their primary function was to terraform the Earth, which had been rendered uninhabitable, and create a suitable environment for humanity's return. Each Proxy was designed to be an "agent" or "administrator" of a specific area, overseeing the process of the planet's reclamation and, eventually, the creation of new human civilizations under domes. They are immortal and virtually indestructible beings, possessing extraordinary strength and abilities, including the ability to manipulate matter and energy at a fundamental level. Their appearance is that of a human, but they can reveal their true form, which is often more monstrous or ethereal, when they utilize their powers or when their true nature is exposed.

The main characters of Ergo Proxy are, without a doubt, its heart. Re-l Mayer is a fascinating protagonist; her skepticism, intelligence, and constant search for the truth, despite the danger, reminded me of the great detectives of literature. But beyond her investigative side, her vulnerability and desperation to find meaning in her existence made her incredibly human. Vincent Law, on the other hand, is the antithesis. A tormented character, riddled with guilt and with a nebulous past. His journey is one of self-discovery and redemption, and his struggle to accept his true nature is the emotional driving force of the series.

Pino, Vincent's little AutoReiv companion, was my ray of light in such a bleak world. Her innocence, her childlike curiosity, and her evolution as she gains consciousness are touching. She represents hope, the ability to find beauty and wonder even in the most bleak environment. It is through her eyes that we are often presented with a necessary contrast to the existential darkness of the other characters.

The animation in Ergo Proxy is simply exceptional. The dark tones, muted color palette, and detailed environment design contribute to a gothic, dystopian atmosphere that completely engulfed me. The action scenes, while not abundant, are striking and well-choreographed, but it's in the still moments, the close-ups of faces, and the expressiveness of the characters' eyes where the animation truly shines. The story's style is a masterful blend of cyberpunk, noir, and existentialist philosophy. Ergo Proxy isn't afraid to ask profound questions about identity, memory, the nature of consciousness, and the purpose of life. The references to Western philosophy, especially thinkers like Lacan, are subtle yet enriching, inviting me to reflect beyond what is presented on screen.

My recommendation for watching Ergo Proxy is emphatic: if you're a science fiction lover looking for more than superficial entertainment, if you like stories that challenge you to think, that invite you to explore the darkest corners of the human psyche and the great questions of existence, then this is your series. It's not for those looking for constant action or easy answers; it requires patience and an open mind. But the rewards will undoubtedly be great. Ergo Proxy is, for me, a masterpiece of animation, an anime that elevates the genre to an art form and that has undoubtedly earned a permanent place on my list of favorites. This work of art is about to turn 20 years old, so I invite you to watch it. Both the story and the animation have aged very well; you won't regret it.

In the decrepit city of Romdeau are the remains of human society on Earth. Thousands of years ago, the global ecological catastrophe ruined the planet, making life outside the dome virtually impossible, as the Earth is now an inhospitable place.

Ergo Proxy tells the story of Vincent Law, an immigrant who leaves his home country to escape a ruined world and seek better luck in Romdeau, a large, developed city that is seen as a paradise on earth. This city is highly controlled by high personalities and prejudices against those who are not native to Romdeau, so whoever arrives there has to be abused, work and suffer a lot to be accepted. As soon as Vincent arrives in the city to work as an AutoReivs repairman, strange accidents start to happen. Mysterious and macabre murders, with strange creatures appearing and all these accidents have a common denominator, Vincent Law. Tired of trying everything to become a model citizen and being continually accused and persecuted, Vincent gives up and decides that it is not worth continuing. However, in an almost miraculous and somewhat strange way, he survives and there begins the search for his true identity. The truth about himself and about the origin of the accidents that pursued Romdeau and prevented him from becoming a model citizen. Perhaps the truths have points in common and intersect in some of them. Here begins a series of journeys, from country to country. Little by little, Vincent relives his long forgotten memories, discovering countless creatures similar to Romdeau's accidents, the Proxies, and learning more about their origin as he finds and puts together the pieces of the puzzle in his memory.

In Ergo Proxy the planet Earth is in ruins. Wealth is concentrated, especially in Romdeau, a closed and self-sufficient city covered by a copula to seal off access to outsiders. Here all inhabitants are accompanied by an AutoReivs, a highly developed robot with human intelligence and even the ability to feel human emotions. Like the highly computerized machines that they are, they are subject to computer viruses. One such virus is Cogito, a virus that makes the AutoReivs behave differently than they are programmed to. One of these cases is Pino, an AutoReivs girl who was also being chased and who soon became attached to Vincent so as to never leave him again. This inseparable couple is joined by Re-l Mayer, granddaughter of the president of Romdeau who met with a Proxy and since then has not rested until discovering the origin and truth behind these mysterious creatures, having left her city to investigate on her own.

The scenario always follows the same tone, a heavy, dark and closed atmosphere that reflects the mystery that hovers over the history of anime. There are always question marks and when a doubt is cleared up, two new ones are raised, keeping the viewer always thinking and trying to reach conclusions on their own.

The question is the point of ignition, which makes the story spin and flow: "What is the meaning of life", "What should I do, in case one day I lose the reason of life". As the plot develops, the viewer understands that every person or machine in that world has a clear function. There are always cases of characters unable to accept a meaningless life and in all cases the solution chosen is death, because they do not want to accept living in the "Absurdity" of that chaotic world.
The story leads us to think that we are not born with a certain mission on a platter, but that it is built by each human being as we live. Life has no clear meaning or purpose, so each human being is capable of creating his own reason to live.

Ergo Proxy has an animation that makes us easily recognize the work due to its unique style, with dark and realistic colors, but the characters have an unusual design, which gives the anime an artistic style. The section is fantastic, the claustrophobic city that is Romdeau, the whole city, the ghettos, the background, are incredible. Not to mention the world outside the dome, that chaotic place represents the misery the world has become, the characters' features, the moments of the battle and the eyes of Vincent. The studio really did a great job.

It has an impeccable soundtrack, the right songs at the right times, and even the silent scenes were set in motion with precision.
This anime is good, especially for certain types of people. For those who want something different from the most famous animes and want something more serious, without so much color, without characters with powers or the usual clichés typical of great animes, but also to break the impression that animes are just cartoons.

I had an amazing journey with music today and when I decided to write about it, I remembered that @dlstudios invited me to come check out and author content on "The Anime Realm". So here I am with my confession.
I have never had much care for music as entertainment or just care for entertainment in general. I have never been into the pop music, most of the popular movies, books or even games. Still... all these things are mere mediums. Mein Kampf, The Bible and Fifty Shades of Grey are all just books. It is the application of the medium and what it produce as its impact is what truly matters.
It all started with an old friend on STEEM @marcoagarcia3rd who commented on one of my articles on Apps, FAANG Stocks, Global Brand Value, Retail Sector and The Empire of Jeff Bezos This lead me to find some of the old music he had shared and I discovered a new artist (Cigarettes After Sex) which lead me to share some of my favorites. These don't represent all of my music tastes and I did exclude some of the more well known pieces of music that I love (eg: I love "O Fortuna")
As you can see, 6 out of the 10 YouTube links I embedded relate to anime. Through all these I remembered an old AMV I used to listen to. It was from Ergo Proxy which is an absolute favorite of mine. That AMV was what introduced me to "Placebo". This was almost a decade ago where I watched the first episode because the name "Ergo Proxy" caught my eye while reading through a list of anime available on a website that probably doesn't even exist now. Even the original AMV which helped me discover "Placebo" is gone. Yet there is another two year old upload with the same title I remember in place of the AMV that should be about a decade old.
My mother had a brain stroke (thrombosis) when i was 10. I don't need to analyze this video so much. from then, i grew up very fast and i became her personal assistant, translator and her right arm (she doesn't move it, and she never spoke one word again since that day). When she fell down, a part, or my entire childhood fell with her. Everybody can make his own interpretations, but i can feel this song and video very directly and i hope can let her go someday. I'm 26 now and i always wanted to share my story each time i saw this video. Thanks for reading and thanks Placebo.

My mother suffers from Bipolar and drug issues and my dad was an aggressive wife beater and from ages 5_14 I was in fostercare. This music video destroys me as it reminds me of my past. As a kid I had to look after my mums emotion and when I moved back hone when I was 14 I had to look after her, make her meals, clean, get groceries, do things a 14 year old shouldn't be doing. I protected my mum from my abusive dad and had to give my mum through everything. Her mental health is extremely bad and I wish things weren't this way. Sometimes I miss being the ignorant naive kid I used to be, as I've grown up I have become the depressed cynical man that is breaking apart and can no longer function. What gets me through the day is remembering the naive kid I used to be. Everywhere I go my past follows me and the happy memories is the onlything that makes me want to move forward. Such a powerful video

i feel like this song is about your inner child allways draging your depressed adult mind around till it cant no more and then you just forget about it and move on. kept tightly shut in a box somewhere in your subconsciousness.

I wouldn't have cared if my father was like that but having him with me would have always taken care of him with great pleasure and love ❤️ but I left early

Beautiful!! I felt it is the story of one guy riding his car that is life.. And the kid is his dreams, his desires, the innocence to take life head on... But the man is all the sadness and suffering that life gives you.. And everyday our goals and desires keep pushing us ahead like the little kid but our sadness and suffering weighs us down.. Though we try so hard to change that, the irony lies in the fact that at some point we have to bury our pain and all those demons far away and move on like how the kid left the guy at the asylum. But it never ends there.. The kid ends up in the car and the cycle repeats . Well I've been through depression.. Just thought I'd put what I feel out here.. Hope someone else finds strength to live.. :)

It's a song about heroin addiction and I can't thank this song and strong video enough . It gave me the strenght to get help after 30 years of addiction to mostly every drug I touched. I am in my second year of recovery, two amazing children 9 and 7. I was always a functioning addict so thankfully my children haven't been effected. Being clean is so much better. Thanks placebo.

The backstory described in the video is mostly delivered in a single episode that looks like a trippy game show similar to "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" which also acts like an unconventional form of combat. It was one of the most unique and efficient ways to tell the backstory and do the world building in an organic and indirect way.
Both of these great creators have many work behind their belts. With the exception of few parts from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ergo Proxy is the best I have seen from either of them. The immense creative freedom given is largely responsible for this. They were given the relatively massive amount of budget to make a anime look decent 14 years later and then asked the director and the writer to just do whatever they want. The results are truly unique and at times works like an even better version of David Lynch.
It has been a nice trip down the memory lane for me and it was a pleasure to write this article. Before I started writing, I shared a lecture from University of Michigan Titled Cogito Ergo Proxy: Radical Doubt in Japanese Anime. I wish you have a great day and grow spiritually and intellectually!

Drawing I did of Lil, main character in the anime series Ergo Proxy. On a post-apocalyptic world a plot is developed based on the psychological triller, with philosophical and existentialist themes that make it one of the rarest series that I have seen.

Historia: 9 – Argumento: 10 – Narrativa: 7 – Arte y Animación: 10 – Sonido: 10 – Total: 9.1 (Magnifica)
