The documentary called "I Am: Celine Dion" directed by Irene Taylor, tells us from the perspective of Celine her beginnings as a singer and part of her personal life, Celine is a woman who was born into a large family that consisted of fourteen siblings, her parents both musicians met on stage and joined the passion and love they felt for music, Both decided to form a family that was growing and where according to his own words never lacked love at home even though he knew that his mother often lied to them about having food to eat and served them the little she found in the cupboard asking God that her children never asked her why they were eating carrot empanadas as she mentions in the documentary. Despite this the family always remained very close and everyone enjoyed being a large family where they could play and have fun together, at that time when Celine would be about five years old she would start singing for her family and even in events like her older brother's wedding where with her small size but with a great talent she started to take seriously the fact of wanting to be a singer.

Over the years Celine Dion would become one of the most successful and beloved artists in the world, with a career spanning more than four decades, selling more than 200 million records worldwide, winning a host of awards including five Grammys, where her ability to transmit emotions through her songs catapulted her as one of the best singers of the decade and who always showed great passion for music being her way to offer the world a little love and strength, the same that characterizes her as a person and that has allowed her to know the world and also to be part of the history of music. For me Celine Dion who I knew for her famous song My Heart Will Go On which was very popular in the 90's after the premiere of the movie Titanic, I found her to be a woman with a unique voice and who reflects in a very emotional way the lyrics of her songs to the point of moving you to tears and in this documentary where she shows herself more human than ever it was hard not to shed some tears when I saw how strong she has been especially after losing the love of her life and father of her three children, and also being diagnosed with a rare neurological disease called Stiff Person Syndrome.

Beyond her musical career, the documentary also highlights Dion's role as a mother. She has three sons, René-Charles and twins Nelson and Eddy, who are a constant source of support and motivation for her. Throughout the documentary, Dion is shown at home in Las Vegas, interacting with her children and trying to maintain a normal family life despite the challenges she faces. Dion's relationship with her children is a recurring theme in the documentary. It shows how, despite her busy schedule and health problems, she always finds time to be with them and support them in their activities. This facet of her life adds a layer of depth to her character, showing that, in addition to being a superstar, she is a dedicated and loving mother.

The most powerful aspect of the documentary is Dion's struggle with stiff-person syndrome. This rare neurological disease is characterized by muscle stiffness and painful spasms that can affect the mobility and quality of life of those who suffer from it. Dion was diagnosed with this disease in 2022, and has since had to cancel several tours and concerts due to debilitating symptoms. The documentary takes a raw and honest look at how this disease has affected Dion, showing how muscle spasms and stiffness have hindered her ability to walk and, most painfully for her, to sing.

Dion explains that the stiffness in her chest and around her lungs makes it difficult for her to use her vocal cords the way she used to. When she found out about the disease that would make it difficult for her to do so many things like singing, it caused her a sadness and a deep fear for the future and not being able to give people more of her as a singer, we can see how the fact that this condition does not allow her to lead her life as a singer in a normal way is something very painful to see and also I think she was very brave to show herself as vulnerable as she does in the documentary where we can see an episode where her body is completely stiff and immediately the doctors assist her to try to make her well again, It is one of the strongest scenes of this documentary that makes you reflect that at some point in life you can have everything and from one minute to the next your life can change forever.

Throughout the documentary, her determination to keep going is shown, not only for herself, but also for her children and her fans. Her positive attitude and indomitable spirit are a source of inspiration to all who see her. The documentary also highlights the unwavering support of her family and friends. Her children, in particular, play a crucial role in her life, providing her with love and support in the most difficult moments. This support is fundamental for Dion, who finds in her family the strength to keep fighting.

For me this documentary besides showing how great Celine Dion has been as a singer since her little moments with her family enjoying her voice and what would make her a world artist, it also shows that we are all human beings who have moments where we have to face our fears and the rawness of a disease that despite being diagnosed in only one person for every million people is something that Celine Dion had to live and who despite having material goods, fame and a beautiful family does not have the ability to control her own body and her voice, the voice with which she has fallen in love with every fan and that she wishes with all her heart to recover to continue doing what she loves, fame and a beautiful family does not have the ability to control her own body and her voice, the voice with which she has made every fan fall in love and that she wishes with all her heart to be able to recover to continue doing what she loves. Celine Dion is a testimony that despite the difficulties of life, she knew how to move forward and although at this moment her health is not the best, she is still that woman that even though she feels like giving up, she continues to move forward as the strong woman she is.

  2. Film Review | Spiderhead (2022)@kemmyb1232d

    Source

Don't take the title of this film literally! It's not about a "spider-head", just so you know. It's an interesting sci-fi but as I watched, I realised it's not just your average sci-fi but mixed with some psychological thriller. It focuses on science, power, and control over the mind. The plot will get your heart racing but the execution of it is a little muted and leaves viewers wanting more.

I don't mind dystopian sci-fi, they set my imagination on a rollercoaster! But this film directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) with Chris Hemsworth, aka, Thor as the main actor is a little disappointing. It is based on George Saunders’ short story titled “Escape From Spiderhead". I think my interest was piqued because of Chris Hemsworth. I was ready to see him in another role other than what I was used to.

Spiderhead (2022) is a dystopian psychological thriller set in the future about a penitentiary and research facility that houses inmates of serious crimes (murder, manslaughter etc) and subjects them to experiments as an alternative to doing time in state or federal prisons.

    *[Source: YouTube](https://youtu.be/BfsNfFoA0J0)*

Steve Abnesti (played by Chris Hemsworth) is the head of the facility and is in charge of conducting a series of drug tests on these inmates, to test their efficacy before they are released into the market. These drugs are chemicals that can be used to manipulate human emotions and behaviour. One of the inmates, Jeff (played by Miles Teller) is one of the primary testers.

Before administering the mood-altering substances, Abnesti requires his subjects to verbally utter the word 'acknowledge' before he does. These drugs force the inmates into compromising circumstances after Abnesti manipulates them. With Jeff's consent, when another inmate is administered a dose of the lethal Darkenfloxx that results in her death, he discovers that Abnesti does not have the inmates' interests at heart. Spiderhead is not all it pretends to be.

    Review

The plot of this film is not bad —a futuristic setting where the populace can be controlled with the aid of certain drugs is scary yet fascinating. I wouldn't want to live this reality but watching it is tolerable. It begs the question of whether this is what some prisoners go through or some version similar to this.

I think this film's focus (and probably Abnesti's) is to better understand what drives certain human behaviour and how they can be manipulated into full obedience. The experiments—which become more and more manipulative—rather than yield the wanted results became a death trap. As I said, the plot is good and it begs for more action but we don't see it in the one hour, and forty-seven minutes of the viewing time.

It's initially interesting to see Hemsworth play a character that is manipulative because viewers are used to seeing him play the role of a mythical god of Asgard. I think he played the role of a cunny and manipulative scientist very well. His performance and that of Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett were impressive. They saved Spiderhead from being a total flop.

The cinematography, lighting and visuals were quite good and on point.

I had high expectations for this film given its impressive pedigree with direction by Joseph Kosinski, the mastermind behind Top Gun Maverick and screenplay by the talented duo behind the Deadpool films, and a star-studded cast of Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, and Jurnee Smollett. Despite these elements, I was ultimately left wanting more.

While I don't dislike the film, it fails to deliver on the potential for a dark and captivating twist that it had initially set up. The result is a rather unremarkable and forgettable movie experience. It's not a complete waste of time, but don't expect it to bring about a groundbreaking change in the sci-fi genre.

Despite the best efforts of Chris Hemsworth's magnetic personality and Miles Teller's powerful acting, the movie falls short and fails to capture the audience's attention due to its lack of excitement.

Overall, it is worth watching and those looking for a heart-pumping thriller may be let down if they have high expectations.

  3. Film Review | Alice, Darling (2022)@kemmyb1240d

    IMG_20230204_164238.jpg Source

Most of Anna Kendrick's films that I have seen are rom-coms and musicals. Who knew she could perform in a psychological thriller? I guess it's a testament to her talent as an excellent actress.

The title of the film Alice, Darling piqued my interest because it's an odd one. I wondered if it was a rom-com but the bowed head of Anna Kendrick boldly filling up the film poster like a person mourning sparked the presumption that it is a mystery or a psychological thriller. And I was right.

Alice, Darling (2023) is a film on abuse in romantic relationships. In this touching, suspenseful drama, we see a young woman, Alice (played by Anna Kendrick), trapped in an emotionally abusive relationship with her partner, Simon (played by Charlie Carrick), an arrogant and controlling artist. Alice doesn't realise that her relationship is slowly sucking the life out of her because she lives to impress her man.

    *[Source: YouTube](https://youtu.be/2D2ZRfqKUD4)*

Simon is a perfectionist but a failing artist. His art exhibition doesn't draw the crowd he needs so he commandeers Alice's attention all through the event such that she can't spend time with her friend. Getting home, he nags about the event not being attended by the 'right people' and he's a bad artist. Somehow he finds a way to blame it on Alice.

Alice's friends, Tess and Sophia, know something is wrong with her. She is no longer the lively friend they once knew and loved. They see how glassy-eyed Alice’s smile is, how she flinches at every ping from her phone and gets easily distracted, how she pulls strands of hair winding them tightly around her index finger, avoiding sugar and counting her calories. Her friends worry thinking she has an eating disorder.

Then they make a plan to hang out at a cabin to celebrate Tess’s birthday. Alice makes up a lie and leaves with her friends. The trip gives Alice an excuse to get away from Simon. On this trip, Alice comes across a flyer about a missing young lady and the efforts made by the locals to find her. Even with the distance between the couple, Simon still haunts Alice in her sleep and her waking hours. Will she ever be free of this annoying, needy artist?

    Review

I have always admired Anna Kendrick as a fine, down-to-earth actress and singer with natural charm, and part of her appeal is that she excels at playing likeable and fun characters. But her performance in Alice, Darling is a stunning departure from her usual bubbly screen presence. And somehow, they got her to sing a few lines also!

    IMG_20230204_135659.jpg

    IMG_20230204_135612.jpg

    IMG_20230204_135541.jpg

    IMG_20230204_135724.jpg

Plot The plot of this film is intense and gripping but I think the screenwriter, Alanna Francis, did an average job of it. Usually, subplots are written to flesh out a plot and they are usually connected to a fine conclusion. In this film, the disturbing part for me was the subplot about a missing young woman.

Maybe it’s to serve as a warning to Alice or a lure to escape but this subplot was never resolved. I failed to see the connection to Alice's predicament and wonder why it was included in the first place.

At one point, I wondered whether her partner, Simon, is the kidnapper hiding in plain sight. I'll say the subplot is very distracting and meaningless. Alice and Simon's toxic relationship can be fleshed out and the ending properly resolved without resorting to this subplot.

The Cast The cast of this film is mainly four: Alice, Tess, Sophia and Simon and their performance is great but not perfect. Anna Kendrick's performance is excellent. Under the director's guidance, she paints an emotional picture of someone on the brink of being consumed by a distorted perception of love but ultimately realises that the true form of it was present all along in her two friends.

Anna Kendrick communicates the actions and emotions of an emotionally abused person through a range of reactions like catatonic vacant stares, heaving waves of a panic attack on the bathroom floor, pulling out her hair and verbal denials. I'll say she did it perfectly. She was believable and her role was relatable. I love how her friends stand by her to bring her out of the traumatic relationship.

Simon is also great in his role as the gaslighting, narcissistic boyfriend/partner but he wasn't given much screen time which brings me to the visual effects. The editing and transitions of flashbacks of Simon berating Alice are untidy and uncomfortable to watch. It's done in such a way that it's difficult to know if Simon is in the room with Alice at the time or not.

Overall, Alice, Darling is not a bad film but not great either. For psychological thriller lovers, I'll recommend this film for a one-time viewing only. Anna Kendrick is a fine actress and deserves better roles than this. I understand this is a debut feature for Mary Nighy as a director and hope she gets better at it with other films.

  4. Film Review | Day Shift (2022)@kemmyb1253d

    Source

One genre of films I love to watch is supernatural, especially the ones featuring vampires and werewolves. I think I've watched many vampire films, except for a few boring ones. I saw this film on my streaming site sometime after its release last year but seeing the face of Jamie Foxx on the poster was a total turn-off.

I'm not one of his fans. I get easily influenced by the cast in a film like many movie lovers. I can't help it —it's like judging a book by its cover. In this instance, it's judging the movie by the film poster.

However, I read some reviews on Hive that were encouraging and since no film attracted my attention today on the streaming site, I settled for Day Shift (2022). Nothing captures an audience's attention like a fast-paced, action-packed film. Day Shift has these elements in good doses from the beginning to the end.

    *[Source: YouTube](https://youtu.be/GN_IwBptKi4)*

This film begins with a scene where Bud Jablonski (played by Jamie Foxx) pretends he is on pool cleaning duty, enters a big house and engages in a tough fighting scene with an elderly vampire. After he kills the vampire and her companion, he extracts their teeth.

He drives by his daughter's school to pick her up. His feisty daughter complains that he is late. When he takes his daughter home, his ex-wife (played by Meagan Good) informs him she's taking their daughter away to another town unless he comes up with some money for her tuition fees and other stuff.

Bud Jablonski takes the extracted teeth to a pawn seller who tries to rip him off. This forces Bud to reach out to his hunter mentor played by Snoop Dogg so he could be accepted back into the Union.

The Union's boss is a little difficult but he is convinced to take back Bud and make him work the day shift if he takes Seth, a Union supervisor (played by Dave Franco), along with him.

In another scene, we are introduced to a powerful and rich vampire, Audrey San Fernando who disguises herself as an estate realtor going around to acquire properties for other vampires. She discovers the body of the elderly vampire and commits to finding the killer —Jamie Foxx. What is her connection to the elderly vampire? Will these two characters succeed in their missions?

    Review

Day Shift is a fast-paced, violent and action-packed movie that follows the story of a vampire hunter, played by Jamie Foxx, as he juggles his dual life. The movie is filled with intense battles and graphic violence as Foxx's character and his team of hunters take on vampires.

This film features a diverse cast and a liberal use of profanity, so I'll advise that children should not be allowed to watch it. But in general, it's not a bad film. It's a perfect blend of humour and absurdity, thanks in large part to Jamie Foxx's performance.

I enjoyed the action scenes. They are a mix of intense martial arts and gunfire. There is some allusion to the use of silver and garlic to combat the vamps. Not all films follow these popular myths. Some films say garlic and holy water work best while some display that beheading or a stake to the heart finishes them off.

    Jamie Foxx, A Vampire Hunter?

I have never been a fan of Jamie Foxx hence my reluctance to watch this film after its release but I admit his performance is outstanding. He makes an impressive vampire hunter. The way he fights, his expertise and use of guns and ammunition display his badass-ness. His role as a loving father who fights scary, murdering bloodsuckers to save his family is also fitting.

Another interesting action part of Day Shift is the car chase! Jamie Foxx expertly handled his old pickup vehicle to beat the vampires with better vehicles in an action-packed chase.

The scene I enjoyed the most was the one where Jamie and his protégé team up with two vampire hunters to take down a hive in a big mansion. It was a delight to watch. All of these actions are complemented by the right amount of gore. So if you have a thing against gore, I'll advise you not to watch this film.

    Other Cast Members

Another cast member I commend for his performance is Dave Franco. In my opinion, he is adorable as that naive vampire hunter that pees his pants every time (spoiler: one time, he shits himself) when there is an attack. I like that he overcomes his fear and becomes a fearless hunter, probably because of the vampirism in his blood (a twist!)

Snoop plays the part of Jamie Foxx's hunter mentor and his costume of leather vests, flowing black coat and hat makes him look like a badass hunter from an old western movie. Also, Karla Souza was great in her performance of Audrey San Fernando, the villain vampire. I'll say the cast was impressive.

The cinematography, settings and visual effects were not bad. I enjoyed seeing the landscape and sceneries of Los Angeles.

In summary, Day Shift is a thrilling and action-packed supernatural film that showcases intense battles and graphic violence. The diverse cast, blend of humour and use of a variety of vampire-fighting techniques make the film an entertaining watch. If you're a fan of supernatural movies and can handle gore, this one is definitely worth watching.

  5. Film Review || Nanny (2022)@kemmyb1286d

    Source

This film's poster piqued my interest when I saw a face staring upwards with the mouth and eyes blurry. I assume it's the filmmakers' strategy to get viewers' attention, like clickbait. In this case, it's more. It's a psychological thriller and horror that focuses on 'the hired help'.

I can't remember if I have seen films where the story is told from the help's perspective because, in reality, the help is not meant to be noticed. This film written and directed by Nikyatu Jusu focuses on Aisha (played by Anna Diop), a Senegalese, who moves to America to build a life for herself and work towards bringing her son, Lamine, to join her.

To make her dream a reality, Aisha takes the job of a nanny to a rich white family. She bonds with their young daughter, Rose, while missing her son. As she saves her earnings to bring her son down to the US, certain occurrences take place that threaten her dream. Will she succeed in getting her wish?

    *[Source: YouTube](https://youtu.be/jW-XKkSC63k)*

The plot and settings of this film are brilliant. Aisha, the immigrant, is the central focus and Nikyatu Jusu did an excellent job filling every scene with her presence. Viewers see the pursuits, trials and pains of the American immigrant through each act such as her duties in the house, her bond with Rose which includes feeding her the famous Jollof rice, the usual gossip that takes place at parks between immigrant nannies and so on.

We see what life is like from the eyes and narration of Aisha which is a fresh insight than if seen through another party's eyes. Also, Nikyatu Jusu shines the light on the exploitation and abuse that most domestic workers face in the US.

This brilliant writer-director intertwines the immigrant experience with a supernatural side where we get to know a little about the influence of Mami Wata, an African seductive and dangerous water spirit, and the wise-trickster spider, Anansi. This part captures the horror part of the film but in my opinion, it was more psychological than horror.

I mourn the fact that Nikyatu Jusu's feature film could have been better if it was not slow-paced and loosely assembled. This film runs for ninety-seven minutes but it was towards ten minutes to the end that everything made sense. The scenes are disjointed and end up as loose ends or haphazardly resolved to leave viewers dissatisfied.

Another thing that further drives Nanny down the hole of forgettable films of 2022 is the poor visuals and colouring. The supposedly scary scenes' transitions are awkward, messily included and distract from the film’s central focus - Aisha.

The cast is great and so is their chemistry. I applaud Anna Diop for bringing Aisha to life. We see Aisha as a determined black woman and mother who never lost sight of herself in a foreign country, or of her son, her culture, or her goals, despite the challenges she faced. Diop’s performance is moving and admirable.

The ending is somewhat heartbreaking but it's an enjoyable film. I give it 3.8 stars out of 5 stars because of the slow pace and disjointed scenes.

Most Christmas films are centred around cheesy and light-hearted rom-coms so families and friends can relax and watch during the holidays. I know this film fits the bill but what makes it irresistible to me is seeing Zoey Deutch, Kendrick Sampson and Shay Mitchell in the lineup of the cast. A film that features actors that I love is a winner for me.

But after watching it, I felt like the screenwriter, Tamara Chestna, and director of this film, Daryl Wein, betrayed me. You will get to know the reason for this in a little while. But first, a little rundown on this film.

Something From Tiffany's (2022) is an American rom-com that is based on a novel by author Melissa Hill. It focuses on a young widower, Gary, and his sharp-witted daughter's mission to get a befitting engagement ring from the popular jewellery store, Tiffany & Co.

As they step out of the store with a small teal bag containing the ring, a distracted young man, Gary, bumps into the daughter and enters the same store to buy a pair of earrings for his girlfriend, Rachel, who works at a bakery.

When Gary steps out of the store with his teal bag, he gets into an accident and Ethan rushes to help him. When Gary says he's okay, Ethan stands up and accidentally picks the wrong teal bag and goes home.

Rachel checks up on Gary at the hospital where she meets Ethan and his daughter and they bond. On Christmas morning while presenting gifts to their girlfriends, the two men realise their gifts have been unknowingly swapped. But their girlfriends do not know this. To save face, Gary proposes to Rachel. Will he do the right thing and return the ring to its rightful owner?

No doubt, Something From Tiffany's is a charming and festive rom-com but the director fails to impress viewers including me with this production. One important part of filmmaking that determines its success is the cast. When you are familiar with the quality and genre of films your favourite actors appear in, you become disappointed when they feature in something beneath them.

I've seen Zoey Deutch in fascinating films such as Vampire Academy (2014), Set It Up (2018), Not Okay (2022) among others and I can say she's a delight to watch. Her performance is always excellent. She brings her A-game, banter and that winning grin that reminds me of her mother, Lea Thompson, to each film. This spectacular young actress was severely undervalued in this rom-com.

Zoey and Kendrick Sampson's presence is what holds the film together leaving the gap wide open for a very poor supporting cast. The director is more interested in ensuring the film fits a good rom-com. Less attention is given to the other halves of the couples, Gary and Vanessa (played by Shay Mitchell) except to establish that they are conceited and unlikeable.

I've adored Shay Mitchell right from Pretty Little Liars series and must say she deserves better. Her character in this film has no depth and she has no chemistry with Kendrick. It was like the film wasn't interested in her. Why feature her at all?

Zoey Deutch and Kendrick Sampson are fantastic as a couple and their performances are outstanding enough that viewers fall in love with them and overlook the questionable parts of the film.

I enjoyed the scenes where the two couples open the gifts on Christmas day and discover the mistake. It was good editing to build anticipation and place the two scenes side by side rather than watch them one after another.

Overall, it's a fine festive film you can watch while curled up in bed with popcorn or some comfort food.
