"Gerald's Game" || When Hopes of Spicing Up Their Marriage Gone Wrong [WARNING: May Contain Minor Spoilers]@tegoshei1680d
I watched around three different movies yesterday and of course, they're all under the horror or psychological thriller genre. One of them is "Gerald's Game" which is based on Stephen King's novel and directed by Mike Flanagan. Well, these two are really amazing in their works, so I have high hopes. *haha*
As in the description on my title suggests, the story is about a couple who has been having problems related to their marriage, particularly their sex life.
For some reasons, Gerald, the husband, couldn't get it up without drinking some medicine. They have been abstaining which somehow is affecting their relationship. Perhaps, improving their sexual intimacy would help them. In order to spice things up, he wanted to try bondage as it somehow excites him. He and his wife Jessie then went to remote lake house to spend some time together with the hope of saving their marriage.
While they were in the middle of their bondage play *(Jessie was handcuffed while Gerald was kind of role playing)*, Jessie found it very uncomfortable and wanted to stop. However, they ended up being in an argument which resulted to Gerald having a cardiac arrest leaving Jessie alone handcuffed to their bed frame in the lake house which is in the middle of nowhere. And this is where the emotional, mental and physical challenges of survival starts for Jessie.

Above is the official Netflix trailer of the said movie. And as you've noticed, Jessie also had quite a past that she has somehow hidden or secretly struggled with... and every moment of that hidden past came back to haunt her as she tries to survive the situation she's currently in.
The plot or the setting might be too simple or maybe boring for some, but I actually enjoyed it. I admire how a simple setting was able to tell quite a lot. There weren't any jump scare *(at least for me)*, but the situation was creepy. The dog... the moonlight monster were so disturbing that they're making me a bit nauseous.
The psychological part of the story was amazing, though. The hallucinations were so believable... persuasive, even. It really showed how someone who is suffering from some mental distress is feeling and experiencing. It was scary in some sense that you wouldn't dare want to experience it.
In addition, the transition between the past and the present was also pretty commendable. It might be a bit confusing, but if you focus on the story, you can actually see and pinpoint some connections.
I personally enjoyed it, especially how psychologically disturbing it was. It's amazing how a simple setting could pull off such a huge message.
If you're into psychological stuff, I recommend this movie. :) I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. And if you already did watch this film, please tell me what you think about it. :)
Thanks a lot for reading. Looking forward to your comments. <3
›Gerald's Game | Review | (ENG) (ESP)@kruznik71815d
I should start this review by saying that I am not exactly a fan of Stephen King's literature but I also recognize that many of the adaptations of his novels have been true gems of cinema such as The Shining or Carrie, but there are many others that have been under my opinion a real disaster, a clear example of it The Dark Tower.
On this occasion, King offers us a different fear, clearly psychological and plagued with dreamlike situations, that is to say, daydreams in one of his characters, a wonderful resource for making a good story.
The film is about a couple who go to a remote house in the woods to save their marriage. Gerald, Jessie's husband and practically the only performance that we are going to see in the entire film, he decides to rescue his marriage with a sexual game by placing handcuffs on his wife. Jessie doesn't like the game and they start an argument that ends with her husband having a heart attack.
The premise may sound simple as well as terrifying. Imagine being handcuffed to a bed, away from every other human being in a house in the woods. As if that were not enough, when this couple enters the house they leave the door open and a dog begins to devour Gerald's corpse and that scene produces such a panic in Jessie that she begins to hallucinate or rather to speak with her subconscious.
This is where things start to get interesting and we can appreciate different narrative devices in the film. Flashbacks, daydreams and a chat with her husband and with herself throughout the film, obviously all the product of her mind disturbed by the events she experienced.
There is a raw story behind all this and a very well played psychological game between the dialogues with herself and with her late husband. Things begin to emerge from the subconscious, things that Jessie did not want to accept, learning much more about who she is and what her husband was.
This type of horror or thriller is very intelligent because without the need for gore and extremely shocking scenes, they have an anxiety effect on us, like a kind of subtle darkness that gradually traps us and we want to know more. King is an expert in this, he drops crumbs of history to us so that we continue to hunger for it.
Psychological terror is my favorite without a doubt, I consider it the most difficult to execute but the one that involves us the most. This story is no exception, it will slowly catch us until we wait for the long-awaited climax apart from knowing the characters intimately, their weaknesses, their fears, their anguish so it is easier to sympathize with them and understand the terror they suffer.
These types of intimate films show us that terror does not need spectacularity to achieve its mission, it is enough to get hooked on dialogues and deep knowledge of these characters that reveal an increasingly dark story.
Jessie's (Carla Gugino) acting was excellent, down to earth and I have no complaints about her. The terror that Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) inspires was also quite successful, not being a psychopath or anything like that, just a man with dark passions who reveals his true self.
Living next to a person and knowing that we never knew him can be a real terror. These are some of the things that we are going to appreciate in this film. Revelations of a failed marriage, of the ignorance that Jessie had about her husband but above all about herself.
The film is an introspective journey into Jessie's fears and her traumatic experiences in the past, making full sense of the psychological genre and emphasizing only the mental aspect. If we can appreciate certain touches of terrifying fantasy but that for me are not important at all and are even disposable.
Gerald's games is a highly recommended movie if you want to see something different from what is coming out in the horror scene. It is not completely innovative but it certainly has an undeniable touch of originality and is worth giving it a try.
Memories are little crumbs that we leave on the way so we don't forget where we came from, but sometimes we wish to forget the way back home.
The human being is a laboratory that has not yet been explored that possesses the ability or curse of possessing a memory so wide that it can store so many memories deep within its being that it is difficult to extract each one of them and put them on the table, but that does not mean To say that they are not present and that at some point they come out to rub it to make us smile or simply relive that hell that caused us so much damage.
Those memories that we try to bury for years usually come to light in dreams or moments of great tension that turn our day into the worst Nightmare. We can control everything, but memories have control over us.
THE COVER WAS EDITED BY ME WITH IMAGES FROM THE FILM "GERALD’S GAME" AND IMAGES OF MY OWNERSHIP.
We tend to fall into the void when a bad memory is reborn from the deepest and that happens at critical moments or when we least expect it. Watching GERALD'S GAME brought to mind that feeling of when we are taken to the extreme or simply cornered against that wall full of thorns that we have avoided for so many years.
Gerald's Game is one of those films that shows you a slightly distorted reality and we see how human beings can bring to light all that they have stored for so many years and that overnight puts it on the table and faces his deepest demons.

Knowing that part of our subconscious gives us the false security of what is around us and we can notice how weak we can be in unexpected situations that are out of our control.
This film shows us how the human being is subject to his past and how we can lose our minds and also how to get out of that situation that seems to have no natural return and perhaps we can lose our minds in the process.
In my next review I will talk to possible SPOILERS, but I will delve deeper into the main plot of the film and leave my thoughts on it.
WHAT IS THE MOVIE ABOUT?
A couple decides to take a short weekend trip to one of their summer cabins to spend some time alone where they can reactivate the flame of passion and have a moment of intimacy away from everything around them.
Jessie (Carla Gugino) and Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) arrive at the cabin and begin to settle in their room where everything seems to be going well, the sexual tension on the part of the husband begins to be felt, but on the part of the wife things do not go by the same tuning.
Gerald has a different night planned where he takes the initiative to propose to his wife a sexual game where some wives are part of that game. Jessie agrees, but things start to get a little weird with Gerald who seems to have a slightly out of place fantasy where submission is his fetish or fantasy.
Jessie, scared, tells him that she does not agree with the situation and that she is afraid to know that part of her wife that she did not know and that scares her. From that moment, complaints came to light, uncomfortable situations where the couple had to get out to give a clearer idea of why the relationship was dying and the sexual desire was no longer the same as years ago.
The couple begins to have a conversation where neither party wants to agree or have a neutral position, if not the opposite, they attack each other with everything that seems to have been stored for years.
When we think that things couldn't get worse, we see Gerald starting to have a heart attack due to stress and because of the Viagra that he had taken, the man falls out of bed and stops leaving all the color of ant takes a withering blow to the head killing Gerald and leaving Jessie handcuffed to the bed.
The desperate wife begins to ask for help for hours, but no one responds, since they are in a cabin away from the town or from a neighbor who can help them. This situation worsens when night comes and Jessie does not know what to do with the situation and begins to lose her mind and goes into a state of shock where she loses her reason and begins to have hallucinations.
The plot revolves around moments where hallucinations and the subconscious play with the mind of this woman who under despair has to find a way to fight against memories of the past that torment her again and get out of the situation in which she finds herself. It sure could end your life if you don't do something quickly. It is a 2017 American psychological horror film that uncovers a box full of pain that must be entered forever.
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
A film with only two characters and a small room that seems to be the only witness to everything that is about to happen and that leaves us with a sea of situations that will blow our minds.
Jessie starring the beautiful (Carla Gugino), we are presented with a woman who has had the bad luck of going through such difficult moments as a child that they have marked her for life and that inside she has kept so much pain that she has not He has been able to overcome that stage of his life, which has resulted in having a dead marriage. Where her self-esteem seems to be conditioned to what her husband offers her and that she has not had the opportunity to live in peace.
This character is a labyrinth of emotions and we can see it in 103 minutes of the film, where that lonely and troubled personality gradually collapses, we see how she fights with her subconscious and poses situations where she believes an image of her husband where for the first time she dares to tell him what she really feels. Seeing that struggle where seeing her wife and herself in a hallucination of hers helps her get through every difficult moment during those three days that she was kept handcuffed to the bed.
The actress (Carla Gugino) plays a great role where we can see her outside of her comfort zone, but leaving a good role that we will enjoy as spectators from start to finish.
The man (Bruce Greenwood) who gives life to Gerald, gives us a moderate performance where his character is the typical man who needs to be in control of the situation and who will do whatever it takes to not feel trapped and be who decide everything that happens around you.
I would like to talk more about his character, but really everything revolves around Jessie who is the center of attention of the main plot, Gerald works as a bridge to give start or context to some situations that directly involve him or that it's the part of Jessie's subconscious that tells her what she thinks, but she doesn't dare to say out loud. Definitely a couple of unique characters, with a dark but interesting storyline.
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE GOOD AND THE BAD
THE GOOD
If you are a fan of psychological horror, this movie is for you, it is also a thriller that can generate greater tension to the viewer and moments that are not understood until you know the story of Jessie until the end.
The setting presents us with a small place referring to our head where everything happens and nothing can be ignored. His photography is dark and gives us the feeling of loneliness and emptiness that leaves open a range of situations that we could see in real life.
Their actors do a good role, we can see chemistry with their characters and that is gratifying for the viewer. It is also an adaptation of the homonymous novel by Stephen King under the same name.
THE BAD
The plot develops slowly which makes it heavy for the viewer who expects a fast pace and everything to unfold in a single timeline. This can be tedious for some and left a bad taste in my mouth at first.
I don't want to reveal a couple of scenes or storylines that make the movie interesting, but I can tell you that one dw its characters outside of the main plot seems to be unnecessary for the movie even though I haven't read the book it feels like unnecessary filler.
MY RATING
A simple, but complete film that does not need much to get to convey the message or leave the viewer interested until the end, from my humble opinion it deserves a 7.5 / 10 although it is not bad, it has small details that do not make it worthy of a major percentage.
CHECK IT OUT
In this small space, I will make you a small invitation to watch a couple of movies that may attract your attention. I will use as source of text information taken from Wikipedia or any web page, which you can see directly if you click on the text of the SYNOSIS of each recommendation.
Did you know that hallucinations can occur in any of us in moments of stress or relaxation, it seems that hallucinations are the product of situations that activate a distorted message of reality in our brain, but that it is not due to moments of tension or due to mental problems.
FINAL THOUGHT
Being under great pressure can be the perfect detonator to bring out the darkest in us, where our true self comes out to rub or perhaps that trunk that should not be opened is uncovered. Human emotions are so sensitive that we feel a suffering that is unthinkable where each of us creates situations to avoid falling into that dark well.
Inside us there are endless emotions that determine who we are and how strong we can be in life. Those who have gone through critical moments reveal that they see themselves reflected in that moment and describe how quickly everything happens.
I have thought about those difficult moments in my life where anxiety has touched sensitive fibers in me and of which I have had the strength to overcome, but that feeling can always make people see things differently from others, hitting bottom can be a difficult step that we take at certain moments of our life, but going out to rub is the goal that we must all achieve to show how strong we are in life.

The Gerald's Game Review and Opinion
[English Version]
Hello Hivers movie lovers, this time I bring you a small summary and analysis of a film that is on the Neflix platform is a film that in particular I find quite entertaining for the plot and the plot that presents the viewer and everything we discover about the protagonist of this film.
This movie is based on a novel by Stephen King, which being by this well known writer we can know what to expect from this movie. As many of us know in the world of film and literature Stephen King is known for his science fiction, mystery, fantasy and above all his name is synonymous with horror novels and dark stories knowing in a way a little of the worst psychological fears of the characters.
The novel Gerald's Game is written in 1991, the film based on that novel opens in the United States on September 29, 2017 directed by Mike Flanagan, where we can expect very good performances Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood.
This marriage with many problems decides to escape from work and the noise of the city to spend intimate moments in a cabin. The couple will seek to rekindle the fire of their relationship and strengthen their marriage, however, in a sexual game of Gerald where he ties his wife to the bed with handcuffs everything goes wrong, Gerald dies leaving his wife unable to move and fighting for her survival in a remote place with little chance of finding her in a few days to help her, unable to find water or food, Jessie Gerald's wife must find a solution to survive this event, in addition to fighting his own inner demons.
For lovers of suspense, including drama with a bit of psychological horror which is a classic feature of Stephen King's novels, we can enjoy this film, keeping in mind that in my opinion the acting of the main characters is key to bring the film to life.
This marriage has serious problems, however, they try to rekindle the fire of passion in a remote cabin, what catches the attention since we see the trailer is that sexual game of Gerald with his wife tied to the bed without the possibility of moving, the passing minutes of the film we can understand the reason for this game that ultimately proves deadly for Gerald and that puts his wife on the verge of death.
The explanations appear little by little after the death of Gerald, he has a heart attack and is left dead on the floor of the room, Jessie desperately tries to scream and try to wake her husband, as the minutes pass she realizes that it is useless, besides being tied without being able to move she has another problem, the door of the cabin is still open and a wild dog enters the room and even begins to eat part of Gerald's arm.
Jessie being in this horrible and distressing situation begins to see hallucinations, this hallucination is nothing more and nothing less than her husband, who had died a few minutes ago, even in imaginary husband is missing a piece of arm due to the bite of the dog. Jessie begins to talk to this hallucination a mental game that leads Jessie to remember old anecdotes and to enter into a mental conflict that she carries out until the end of the film.
One of the scenes that explains many aspects of the marriage is when Gerald makes Jessie remember a very particular event in their marriage, Gerald not having a great sexual appetite for his wife decides to take pills to help him in that work, which probably caused the heart attack, however, the couple remembers a time when Gerald did not need the pills to be intimate with his wife, it was practically playing a rape, apparently this excited Gerald, that would explain the use of handcuffs to try to rekindle their passion.
Jessie on the other hand also dragged some chains of the past, on the shore of a lake and watching a solar eclipse his father masturbates having the adolescent Jessie in his lap, that causes a psychological trauma in Jessie. On her father's instructions, Jessie decides to hide this secret and never to tell anyone about this event. These heavy chains of the past are met with the reality that she is handcuffed to the bed with no one to help her, just her and her conflicted mind.
As the film progresses another hallucination appears, it is Jessie herself, full of energy and vitality that drives her to continue fighting, apparently this recreates a mental conflict within the protagonist, on the one hand Gerald who tries to remember negative aspects and in many cases influences her fear, on the other hand it is Jessie herself that gives her the strength to continue fighting for her life, making her think of a solution to escape.
At nightfall a new hallucination apparently appears, Jessie assumes that it is death that comes for her and her soul, she closes her eyes while this specter is in a corner of the room covered by darkness, Jessie trembling with fear passes the night, hoping to survive another day and with the desire to sleep all night so as not to have to see that hallucination of death again, evidently representing her fear of darkness and death.
Jessie feels desperate, even the dog that was eating her husband's body to pieces tries to attack her, with the strength she has left she manages to kick it and chase it away, however, she is aware that she does not have much strength left and if she does not fix her situation she will die from dehydration or from the dog's attack.
Another of the key scenes of the film is when her own hallucination makes her remember that Gerald before dying put a small glass with water on a small shelf above the bed, being desperate for water she tries to lower the glass half full of water, when she manages to get the glass down by tilting the shelf she encounters the following problem, However, Jessie is winning mental battles over time and manages to remember a small label that is on the shelf, she uses it as a straw to absorb the vital liquid from the glass, something that could have changed the plot of the film.
Jessie as time goes by is facing her own demons left in her mind due to the trauma her father left her when she was a teenager, however, she is winning essential battles for her survival such as drinking water, however, the final battle has not begun, if she decides to wait tied up, people may arrive at the place in a few days, the risk is that they do not arrive in time to save her life, she can try to leave, however, her hand is handcuffed and the possibility of leaving without suffering damage seems to fade.
The hallucination of herself gives her courage to overcome this obstacle, her only tool is that glass on the shelf, her plan is to use the glass to make deep cuts in her hand and wrist, make the blood work as a lubricant to remove her hand and then look for the key to the handcuffs and free her other arm.
Jessie brings out an incredible mental strength, she has fought against herself and won, she breaks the glass that helped her to be hydrated and a piece of glass she places it firmly embedded in the ledge, she knows it will hurt a lot even endangers her life if she does not manage to find help quickly, however, she knows that this is her only way out and decides to cut her hands. A key aspect is that she knew exactly where to cut and how much blood accumulated on her wrists, that refers to the fact that she thought many times about suicide due to that traumatic event in her childhood.
She cuts her wrists and palm with quite deep cuts, blood comes out of her body and she uses it as a lubricant, however, her hand does not come out easily, when she tries to pull it out with force the skin and muscle is lifted, even in the scene we can see parts of the bone before getting her limb to come out.
Jessie finds the keys and frees her arm, however, the apparition of death returns to the house, this apparent demon carries with him objects that Jessie assumes he took from his victims, she decides to give her wedding ring to this demon.
When she gets the car keys she quickly goes to get help, her body having gone through extreme situations such as lack of food, dehydration to which we add the lack of blood Jessie's body collapses and falls asleep while driving, fortunately she crashes into a tree near other houses with people inside.
After this event changes the protagonist's life forever, the confrontation with her inner demons has been beneficial for her life, she overcomes the childhood trauma and builds a new life around her new energy, she collects her husband's insurance and decides to open a foundation for people with traumas. Previously Jessie did not talk about her trauma, not to her friends, not to her husband either, however, to help people she now talks about it every day.
Something remains unresolved, the apparition of death wreaks havoc on her mind every night, but on the news the truth appears peeking through the screen. That apparition turned out to be a grave robber, he ripped pieces off the bodies and raped the deceased males, he brought with him a box of items. The new Jessie decides to go to his trial where she sees him and definitively buries that event.
Previously her life was tied to fear, from her adolescence when she had that traumatic event, through Gerald who controlled every aspect of her life and the grave robber who caused her great terror. Thus explaining that the protagonist's mind was in 3 prisons, the one of silence by her father, the comfort offered by Gerald and the fear represented by the grave robber.
At the end of the film appears the character played by the Dutch actor Carel Struycken, the grave robber or man in the moon as he is also referred to is handcuffed and Jessie reflects in his face her father and Gerald, representing that her fears, fears and her dark past are chained and she finally to live life as a new person.
The movie has a novel plot, it is obviously inspired by one and that definitely comes through in the filming. The truth is an entertaining movie especially for people who can identify with Jessie, I think the message of facing your own demons to be free is really important.
The movie does not have a lot of publicity, it is not one of those movies that leave your mouth open because of the special effects or the action, however, it is very well developed, for lovers of Stephen King's works I recommend it, taking into account that I think the performances are excellent.
Not long ago I commented Hush, a film directed by Mike Flanagan, now, based on an Stephen King's original story, Gerald's Game, published in 1992, the director decides to make a film adaptation that was thought to be unrealizable, however, to the surprise of many, he did a relatively acceptable job considering the complexity of the work he undertook, which is why, perhaps, the greatest merit of the film is not to ruin it completely.
Year: 2017
Category: Psychological Horror.
Director: Mike Flanagan.
Cast: Carla Gugino, Chiara Aurelia, Bruce Greenwood, Carel Struycken, Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel.
Plot
When an erotic game is not as planned, and her husband dies suddenly, Jessie must try to survive, but to achieve it, she must free herself from the handcuffs that hold her to the bed of a remote and isolated house, while she makes them, her inner demons and unexpected intruders will stalk her.
Opinion
Jessie and Gerald, a married couple, decide to travel to their second home, which is located away from the city, with the aim of recovering the sexual activity that their relationship lost. He prepared everything for the occasion, the gardeners pruned the lawn, the service women cleaned the house, and the closest neighbors are not present, so that in addition to them the only thing alive in that place is a dog that for an oversight at the wheel they almost run over. Soon, the erotic game that Gerald had prepared is not as agreed, Jessie is scared and not pleased to be tied with handcuffs to bed, so he asks his husband to release her, but... but... but... just then Gerald suffers a heart attack and dies. For which Jessie will be tied to the bed, starting a psychological survival, in which she must first face her fears and her past, to be able to cope with the tight situation she is in.
The film does a good job as a psychological thriller, it will even make some people's hair stand on end, however, I cannot say that it has generated a very big impact on me, but I must say that I find the film quite disturbing, especially when it delves into the past of the protagonist, there I can see what it tries to do, and I think it works, the film seeks to introduce distrust in the mind of the spectator, in order to provoke sensations.
In general it is a very good adaptation that delves into the most important psychological aspects, showing not only the physical captivity of the protagonist, but also the psychological one. The idea is very well posed and is faithful enough to the book, even in its most unpleasant facets.
The director decides to maintain the maximum tension, for which he uses, in a correct way, a set of disturbing flashbacks, which thanks to the aesthetic continuity are introduced naturally and provide a dramatic background to the character. Much has to learn Mark Tonderai, who directed House at the End of the Street, film of which I was talking yesterday.
So that what is seen in the film works correctly, it took actors capable of transmitting the complexity that the characters needed, and the work done by Guino and Greenwood is perfect, they manage to capture and transmit the essence of the story. Chiara Aurelia, a very young actress and that I had not seen act until now, does a great role, especially considering how disturbing are the scenes that she had to participate in, I just do not like to see children in the movies, I have no confidence in the morality of those who work in film projects.
I feel that the biggest problem of the film is in the final part, where for almost ten minutes we listen to a voiceover, which is essential to respect the final plot of the book, where the continuous ellipses make their film adaptation very complicated, which makes the spectators unfamiliar with King's book see how the film, after reaching the end, seems to continue another ten minutes that the film did not need, and that instead of clarifying something, complicates the story.
Trailer
Score
6/10
The film does not completely satisfy me, in fact, it leaves me with something unsatisfied, however, Gerald's Game is a movie that you can see when you do not have a clear idea about what to select in the Netflix catalog.
In another film adaptation of a Stephen King novel, Gerald's Game is one of many films in 2017 that found success in releasing directly to Netflix, avoiding some of the traditional methods of advertising and press screenings that come with releasing alongside huge blockbusters in cinemas worldwide.
The film itself seems to carry a fairly simple narrative: a wife and husband take some time away from things at a lakeside house in Alabama. Hoping to revive their love life a bit, the two engage in some newer activities in the bedroom.
Feeling uncomfortable with things, Jessie (Carla Gugino), while tied to the bed, argues with Gerald (Bruce Greenwood), leading to his unstable heart finally giving in. Jessie is left tied to the bed, alone, with only her greatest fears and conscience to keep her company.
This film, for the most part, focuses on psychological horror, the horrors of being alone and helpless while in a state of full awareness. With Jessie's troublesome past appearing to have conjured this strange apparition containing various disfigurements that toys with her in the night: the Moonlight Man.
As stated previously, this film for the most part focuses on Jessie's situation on the bed, although it takes a darker turn into her childhood featuring sexual abuse from her father; and how the Moonlight Man is the ghost of him coming back to manipulate her and make her existence intolerable again. This is where Stephen King's writing makes a big appearance.
**
THIS IS A BIG SPOILER; CONTINUE IF YOU DON'T CARE
**
The Moonlight Man is no conjured apparition from the depth of her mind, he's a genuine figure that roams around. picking off men and killing them, often eating parts of their bodies. It's a massive twist that's rather unexpected, although hinted in the first few minutes of the film, curing a radio report of frequent burglaries in the area.
The film's psychological horrors quickly take a turn for genuine horror. The entire time, she was watching this figure appear, believing it was all in her mind; a ghost of her past coming to haunt her in a moment of weakness. If you're focusing heavily on the Jessie's childhood, it's easy to completely ignore the hints and mistake them for hallucinations.
In short, this film is very, very good. There's a ton of buildup that has you looking in one direction, while the film is letting something huge lurk in the other. The film contains some really creative writing that kicks you into sudden realisation; and it's certainly going to give you the chills.
