Hello everyone, dear community of The Anime Realm, today I'm back with a new review. I have to talk to you about an anime that caught me completely by surprise: it's Given, and my head is spinning, full of so many feelings. So, first things first, let's get the label out of the way. Yes, Given is a "Boys' Love" anime, a BL, a Yaoi, whatever you want to call it. I know, I know that for many people, that label is like a barrier. They think, "that's not for me," or they already have a preconceived notion of what it's going to be like. I've also seen several anime of this genre and, yes, some were cute, but none of them ever truly hit me, felt... I don't know, important. BUT, and listen to me closely, if you let that label stop you from watching Given, you'll be missing out on one of the most beautiful, emotionally intelligent, and well-crafted stories I've seen in a very, very long time. Because this isn't just a romance, people. I read somewhere it was called "a love story about finding yourself," and, oof, there's just no better way to put it. It's a story about healing, about finding your voice, about feeling passionate about something again, and about having the guts to move forward.

The story, at first, seems super simple. We meet Ritsuka Uenoyama, a high school kid who is a super talented guitarist. I mean, the guy has been playing for years and is very good, but that spark, that little fire he had for music, has kind of been fading. It became pure routine, something he does out of habit. I think we can all relate to that, when you lose your taste for something you once loved. Well, one day, Uenoyama is looking for his secret spot at school to take a nap and he finds another guy, Mafuyu Satou, clutching a beautiful Gibson guitar. The catch? Mafuyu has no idea how to play it, and to top it all off, the guitar has broken strings.

Hola a todos, querida comunidad de The Anime Realm, hoy vengo con una nueva reseña, les tengo que hablar de un anime que me agarró por sorpresa se trata de: Given y tengo la cabeza a mil, un montón de sentimientos así que, primero lo primero, saquémonos la etiqueta de encima, sí, Given es un anime "Boys' Love", un BL, un Yaoi, como quieran llamarle.. yo sé, yo sé que para mucha gente esa etiqueta es como una barrera, piensan que "eso no es para mí" o ya tienen una idea en la cabeza de cómo va a ser, yo también he visto varios animes del estilo y, sí, algunos estaban lindos, pero ninguno me llegó a pegar de verdad, a sentirse... no sé, importante, PERO, y escúchenme bien, si dejan que esa etiqueta los frene y no ven Given, se van a estar perdiendo de una de las historias más bonitas, más inteligentes emocionalmente y mejor hechas que he visto en muchísimo, muchísimo tiempo. Porque esto no es solo un romance, gente, por ahí leí la llamaban "una historia de amor sobre encontrarse a uno mismo" y, ¡uf!, es que no hay mejor forma de decirlo, es una historia sobre sanar, sobre encontrar tu voz, sobre volver a sentir pasión por algo y sobre tener los huevos para seguir adelante.
La historia, en principio, parece súper sencilla, conocemos a Ritsuka Uenoyama, un chico de prepa que es un guitarrista súper talentoso, o sea, el tipo lleva años tocando y es muy bueno, pero esa chispa, ese fueguito que tenía por la música, como que se le fue apagando.. se volvió pura rutina, algo que hace por inercia. Creo que todos nos podemos identificar con eso, cuando le pierdes el gusto a algo que antes amabas.. bueno, pues un día, Uenoyama está buscando su lugar secreto en la escuela para echarse una siesta y se encuentra a otro chavo, Mafuyu Satou, abrazado a una guitarra Gibson hermosa. ¿El detalle? Mafuyu no tiene ni idea de cómo tocarla y, para rematarla, la guitarra tiene las cuerdas rotas.

And this, people, is where everything explodes. Uenoyama, mostly so the kid would leave him alone so he could take his nap, tells him, "fine, fine, I'll fix it for you." But the moment he changes the strings and plays a single chord, boom! Something changes forever. In that sound, a world of things Mafuyu had bottled up is unleashed, and he clings to Uenoyama, begging, pleading, for him to please teach him how to play. That simple favor, that gesture of fixing a broken guitar, becomes the spark that ignites everything that follows. Because it's no longer just about teaching him chords; it's about deciphering the story behind this quiet boy and his broken instrument. And as he does, Uenoyama begins to feel that passion for music he thought was lost. What left me speechless about this series is its depth. This anime is an emotional bomb, seriously, prepare yourselves. The way it handles grief, love, and healing... it does so with a maturity and delicacy that leaves you breathless.

What I love about this show is how real it feels. Seriously, if you've ever been in love, gotten your heart shattered, lost someone, or felt totally lost about what to do with your life, you're going to see yourself on screen. It’s almost spooky how relatable it is. But it’s not just a misery-fest. It actually shows you the hard work of healing—how it's messy and you take two steps forward and one step back. It understands how complex we are, especially when it comes to the feelings we'd rather not deal with. The writing is on another level. There are these moments where the characters get really reflective, comparing love to music. This one line completely floored me: "Hearts are like guitar strings. They don't make a sound if they're too loose. You have to tighten them until they're about to break, and only then do they release that first vibration that reaches your ears."

Y aquí, gente, es donde todo explota, Uenoyama, más que nada para que el chico lo deje en paz y se pueda echar su siesta, le dice "ya, ya, yo te la arreglo".. pero en el momento en que le cambia las cuerdas y toca un solo acorde, ¡pum! Algo cambia para siempre, en ese sonido, a Mafuyu se le destapa un mundo de cosas que tenía guardadas, y se le pega a Uenoyama rogándole, suplicándole, que por favor le enseñe a tocar.. ese simple favor, ese gesto de arreglar una guitarra rota, se convierte en la chispa que prende todo lo que sigue, porque ya no se trata solo de enseñarle acordes; se trata de ir descifrando la historia detrás de este chico callado y su instrumento roto, y mientras lo hace, Uenoyama empieza a sentir de nuevo esa pasión por la música que creía perdida, lo que a mí me dejó con la boca abierta de esta serie es su profundidad.. este anime es una bomba emocional, en serio, prepárense, la forma en que maneja el duelo, el amor, el sanar... lo hace con una madurez y una delicadeza que te deja sin aire.Te pinta situaciones que se sienten súper reales, si alguna vez te has enamorado, si te han partido el corazón, si has sentido ese dolor de perder a alguien o te has sentido estancado sin saber qué carajo hacer con tu futuro, te juro que te vas a ver reflejado en estos personajes.
La serie no solo te avienta el dolor a la cara, te muestra el proceso, que es un desmadre y para nada lineal, de cómo se sana.. te muestra lo complicadas que son nuestras propias emociones, especialmente esas que intentamos meter bajo la alfombra, tiene unos momentos preciosos, casi poéticos, donde los personajes se ponen a reflexionar sobre el amor, comparándolo con la música. Hay una frase en particular que se me quedó grabadísima en la cabeza: "Los corazones son como las cuerdas de una guitarra. No suenan si están demasiado sueltas. Tienes que tensarlas hasta que estén a punto de romperse, y solo entonces lanzan esa primera vibración que te llega a los oídos". Ese es el nivel de guion que se maneja aquí, no es solo un romance tierno y bonito; es crudo, es visceral y es profundo.. logra capturar esa verdad sobre el amor y la conexión, y al mismo tiempo, tiene un aire súper inocente y dulce que te derrite.

And now, let's talk about the music, because in Given, music isn't just decoration, it's the plot! It's the heart, the engine of the entire series. Watching the band grow is just as important as watching the relationships between them grow. I mean, you see them mature as musicians at the same time they mature as people, and one can't exist without the other. The soundtrack, people... no lie, it's spectacular. I'm not just saying it's good, I'm saying you should add it to all your playlists right now! The opening, "Kizuato" by Centimillimental, is a gem. I didn't skip it a single time. It perfectly captures that mix of melancholy and hope that the series has. The ending, "Marutsuke," sung by the anime's band itself, is just as incredible. But the peak moment, the one that elevates this series from "it's cool" to "unforgettable," arrives in episode nine. The band has their first concert, their first gig, and Mafuyu, who has been carrying an enormous weight in silence throughout the series, finally sings.

Let me tell you... that scene is an explosion. It's a sudden release, raw and unfiltered, of every repressed emotion, every piece of pain and longing he had kept inside. Shougo Yano, Mafuyu's voice actor, delivers a performance that both breaks and moves you. As he sings, they show flashbacks that give context to his pain, and the combination of those powerful lyrics, the heartbreaking images, and that voice... it's one of those scenes that makes you hold your breath and leaves you speechless. It is, in a word, perfect. The characters, of course, are the soul of the series.

The four band members feel like real people, each with their own thing going on. Uenoyama, with his gruff exterior but who deep down cares a lot; the mysterious and charismatic Akihiko, the drummer, who's like the group's big brother but with his own emotional mess; the adorable Haruki, the bassist, who is the heart and good vibes of the group; and of course, Mafuyu, the quiet and introverted boy at the center of all the drama. It's impossible not to grow fond of them. They are all great in their own way, and watching them navigate their feelings, with each other and through music, is a wonder. And a little detail that I loved is that the characters change their clothes! It sounds silly, but it's something you almost never see in anime and it adds a touch of realism and personality that is incredible.

Y ahora, hablemos de la música, porque en Given, la música no es un simple adorno, ¡es la trama! Es el corazón, el motor de toda la serie, ver cómo la banda va creciendo es tan importante como ver cómo crecen las relaciones entre ellos.. o sea, los ves madurar como músicos al mismo tiempo que maduran como personas, y una cosa no puede existir sin la otra, el soundtrack, gente... sin mentirles, es espectacular. No les digo que está bueno, les digo que es para meterlo a todas sus playlists ¡ya! El opening, "Kizuato" de Centimillimental, es una joya.. no me lo salté ni una sola vez. Es que captura perfecto esa mezcla de melancolía y esperanza que tiene la serie, el ending, "Marutsuke", que la canta la misma banda del anime, es igual de increíble.. pero el momento cumbre, el que eleva esta serie de "está chida" a "inolvidable", llega en el episodio nueve. La banda tiene su primer concierto, su primer toque, y Mafuyu, que ha estado cargando con un peso enorme en silencio toda la serie, por fin canta, déjenme decirles... esa escena es una explosión.
Es soltar de golpe, en crudo y sin filtros, cada emoción reprimida, cada pedazo de dolor y de anhelo que se había guardado. Shougo Yano, el actor de voz de Mafuyu, se avienta una actuación que te rompe y te conmueve al mismo tiempo.. mientras canta, te van poniendo flashbacks que le dan contexto a su dolor, y la combinación de esa letra potentísima, las imágenes que te parten el corazón y esa voz... es de esas escenas que te hacen aguantar la respiración y te dejan mudo. Es, en una palabra, perfecta, los personajes, claro, son el alma de la serie.
Los cuatro de la banda se sienten como personas de verdad, cada uno con su rollo, Uenoyama, con esa fachada de gruñón pero que en el fondo se preocupa un montón; el misterioso y carismático Akihiko, el baterista, que es como el hermano mayor del grupo, pero con su propio desmadre emocional; el adorable Haruki, el bajista, que es el corazón y la buena onda del grupo.. por supuesto, Mafuyu, el chico callado e introvertido que está en el centro de todo el drama. Es imposible no encariñarse con ellos, todos son geniales a su manera, y ver cómo navegan sus sentimientos, entre ellos y a través de la música, es una maravilla.. y un detallito que me fascinó ¡es que los personajes se cambian de ropa! Suena como una tontería, pero es algo que casi no se ve en los animes y le da un toque de realismo y de personalidad que está increíble.

As for the visuals, people, the series is beautiful. The animation by Studio Lerche is super fluid and perfectly connected to the story's emotions. The colors they use are bright yet soft, creating an atmosphere that feels both delicate and luminous. It's not the most spectacular animation you'll ever see, it doesn't have explosions everywhere, but it's incredibly effective and fits the story like a glove. Even the CGI they use for the performance scenes, which often looks awful and throws you off in anime, is handled super well here. It doesn't distract you at all, it doesn't feel weird; it just works. You can tell that everyone who worked on the series has respect for the original manga.

The result is brutally good. So, to finish, returning to my initial point, please don't let the "BL" label fool you into thinking this is a story just for a niche group. Given is a universal story about the human heart. It's about how music can heal us, how connections with others can save us, and how the toughest goodbyes can lead to the most beautiful new beginnings. It goes toe-to-toe with the best romantic dramas out there, regardless of genre. If you like stories with a ton of feeling, with characters who evolve incredibly, and with a soundtrack that will blow your mind, I swear you have to watch it.

I was expecting a cute romance and that's it, and what I found was a profound journey about grief, passion, and the courage it takes to love again. It surpassed all my expectations, by a long shot. This series will make you feel things. It will make your heart ache, but it will also make it soar. For me, this is an easy 9/10. The story is powerful, you won't forget the characters, and the music is phenomenal. It's a beautiful, moving series that, in the end, leaves you with a lot of hope. En cuanto a lo visual, gente, la serie es una hermosura, la animación del Studio Lerche es súper fluida y está conectada perfectamente con las emociones de la historia.. los colores que usan son brillantes pero suavecitos, creando una atmósfera que se siente delicada y luminosa a la vez, no es la animación más espectacular que vas a ver en tu vida, no tiene explosiones por todos lados, pero es increíblemente efectiva y le queda a la historia como anillo al dedo. Incluso el CGI que usan para las escenas donde tocan, que muchas veces en los animes se ve horrible y te saca de onda, aquí lo manejaron súper bien.. no te distrae para nada, no se siente raro; simplemente funciona, se nota que toda la gente que trabajó en la serie, tienen respeto al manga original.
El resultado es brutalmente bueno.. así que, para terminar, volviendo al principio, por favor, no dejen que la etiqueta de "BL" los engañe y los haga pensar que esta es una historia solo para un grupito de gente. Given es una historia universal sobre el corazón humano, es sobre cómo la música nos puede curar, cómo las conexiones con otras personas nos pueden salvar y cómo las despedidas más cabronas pueden dar pie a los comienzos más bonitos.. se pone al tú por tú con los mejores dramas románticos que existen, sin importar el género. Si a ti te gustan las historias con un montón de sentimiento, con personajes que evolucionan increíble y con un soundtrack que te vuela la cabeza, te juro que tienes que verla, yo me esperaba un romance lindo y ya, y lo que me encontré fue un viaje profundísimo sobre el duelo, la pasión y el coraje que se necesita para volver a amar.
Superó todas mis expectativas, pero por mucho, esta serie te va a hacer sentir cosas.. te va a doler el corazón, pero también te lo va a hacer flotar. Para mí, esto es un 9/10, fácil. La historia es poderosísima, los personajes no se te van a olvidar y la música es fenomenal, es una serie hermosa, conmovedora y que, al final, te deja con un montón de esperanza.. ya se ganó un lugar permanente en mi lista de animes favoritos de la vida.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuidense mucho! Friends of the community The anime Realm, it's a pleasure to be back here. I had a while without watching an anime, the truth is that for lack of time, but recently I saw a production, a film of the anime Given of which I come to talk today. Many times it is important to look for genres that we had not seen before, since we can be surprised, such is the case with the film Given Hiiragi Mix. This movie is from the year 2024, in the genre of drama, romance and music. This is one of a series of movies that came out of the aforementioned anime. The director was Noriko Hashimoto, while the script was written by Yuniko Ayana.

Amigos de la comunidad The anime Realm, un placer estar de vuelta por acá. Tenía un tiempo sin ver un anime, la verdad es que por falta de tiempo, pero recientemente me vi una producción, una película del anime Given de la cual les vengo a hablar hoy. Muchas veces es importante buscar géneros que no habíamos visto antes, puesto que nos podemos llegar al sorprender, tal es el caso con el filme Given Hiiragi Mix. Esta película es del año 2024, del género del drama, romance y música. Esta es una de series de películas que salieron del anime ya mencionado. El director fue Noriko Hashimoto, mientras que el guion fue escrito por Yuniko Ayana.

I must say that I have not seen the anime on which the movie is based, even so I connected with the story and understood everything, although it is always good to watch the anime series to know much more details, to better understand the stories. What is the story of this movie about? It focuses on the friendship relationship between the friends since childhood, Mafuyu, Hiiragi Kashima and Shizusumi Yagi. Ritsuka Uenoyama hears Mafuyu Sato singing, where it was clear that he has a great talent for music, so he invites him to join his band, in order to enter a festival. Finally, they lost the festival, winning the small band of Sato's friends. Later, Ritsuka is invited to join Sato's friends' band as the guitarist, since they lost the one they had, seeing a clear opportunity to reach stardom.

Dedo decir que no he visto el anime de la cual está basada la película, aun así conecte con la historia y entendí todo, aunque siempre es bueno ver la serie animada para conocer mucho más detalles, para entender mejor las historias. ¿De qué trata la historia de esta película? Se centra en la relación de amistad entre los amigos desde la infancia, Mafuyu, Hiiragi Kashima y Shizusumi Yagi. Ritsuka Uenoyama escucha cantar a Mafuyu Sato, donde claramente se notaba que este tiene un gran talento para la música, así que lo invita a unirse en su banda, con la finalidad de entrar en un festival. Finalmente, estos perdieron el festival, ganando la pequeña banda de los amigos de Sato. A film that is a bit complicated in terms of its story, there are several entanglements, but this does not mean that I did not understand anything. A film that touches the theme of music, drama and also romance, in addition to issues of homosexuality, since the protagonists of this story are in love, at least Mafuyu has feelings for Ritsuka, but little by little we see the mutual interest between these characters, although they do not end up commenting on it. As I told you a drama story, you can't miss this kind of things and much more that we will see in a little more than an hour and ten minutes. This is the first part of two movies that came out last year. I must say that I haven't seen the second one yet, since I didn't know about the existence of this anime.

Una película un poco complicada en cuento a su historia, hay varios enredos, pero esto no quiere decir que no haya entendido nada. Una película que toca el tema de la música, el drama y también el romance, además de temas de la homosexualidad, puesto que los protagonistas de esta historia están enamorados, al menos Mafuyu tiene sentimientos por Ritsuka, pero poco a poco vemos el interés mutuo entre estos personajes, aunque no se lo terminan comentado. Como les dije una historia de drama, no puede faltar este tipo de cosas y mucho más que veremos en un poco más de una hora y diez minutos. Esta es la primera parte de dos películas que salieron el año pasado. Debo decir que la segunda aún no la visto, puesto que no sabía la existencia de este anime.

As I said, it is not mandatory to watch the anime to understand the story, although it is necessary, since there are details that maybe I did not notice, due to not having seen the animated series where much more details can be shown, because there are more chapters where the story of the different characters is developed even more. I don't usually watch this kind of genre, I'm more of action anime, adventure, isekai and even some mysteries, supernatural and thriller, and why also psychological suspense. The truth is that I didn't dislike this movie, it has a plot where a lot of problems happen, but how not if I was in the presence of a drama genre story. Is the plot perfect? Well no, it has its details, there are moments where the story is a bit slow, but then it picks up a rhythm that makes what we are watching much more pleasant.

Como les dije, no es obligatoria ver el anime para entender la historia, aunque si es necesario, puesto que hay detalles que tal vez no me percaté, debido a no haber visto la serie animada donde se pueden mostrar mucho más detalles, pues son más capítulos donde se desarrollan aún más las historia de los diferentes personajes. No suele ver este tipo de género, soy más de los animes de acción, aventura, isekai e incluso algunos de misterios, sobrenatural y thriller, y porque también de suspenso Psicológico. Lo cierto es que esta película no me disgustó, tiene una trama donde pasan bastantes problemas, pero como no si estaba en presencia de una historia del género de drama. ¿La trama es perfecta? Pues no, tiene sus detalles, hay momentos donde la historia es algo lenta, pero luego agarra un ritmo que hace mucho más placentero lo que estamos viendo.

The animation of this movie is really good, it has good character designs, the animation is quite fluid and not rough like some anime. The characters show a lot of details, such as sweat, shadows, very real gestures, when they talk it is very real and also when they sing, the characters play the musical instruments, a very careful work in this aspect. I think this was one of the reasons why I liked the anime. What better than to have a good story, which is very well represented in terms of animation, as I have seen many animated series and there have been epic chapters that have been ruined by a bad animation, but this movie is not the case.

La animación de esta película es realmente buena, tiene buenos diseños de los personajes, la animación es bastante fluida y no tosca como tienen algunos animes. Los personajes se le notan bastante detalles, como el sudor, las sombras, gestos muy reales, al hablar se nota muy real y también cuando cantan, los personajes tocan los instrumentos musicales, un trabajo bastante cuidado en este aspecto. Esto creo que fue una de las razones por la cual me gustó bastante el anime. Que mejor que contar con una buena historia, que sea muy bien representada en cuento a la animación se refiere, ya que he visto muchas series animadas y ha habido capítulos épicos que han sido arruinados por una mala animación, pero esta película no es el caso.

The soundtrack is another of the strong points of the Given Hiiragi Mix movie, it has different musical themes, where my favorites are the ones that are moving, the ones that are played in the presentations. I like to watch anime in its original language, in this case Japanese and obviously translated into Spanish, which is my language of birth. I think the translation of the anime is correct.

La banda sonora es otro de los puntos fuertes de la película Given Hiiragi Mix, tiene diferentes temas musicales, donde mis preferidos son aquellos movidos, los que tocan en las presentaciones. Los animes me gustan verlos en su idioma original, en este caso el japonés y obviamente traducido al español, que es mi idioma de nacimiento. La traducción me parece correcta del anime.

Given Hiiragi Mix is a good movie with a pretty decent story that is worth watching, it has its dramas that can never be missing in this type of story, but it also has its funny moments, which at times can make us smile. This is a good production, which in addition to the story has an excellent animation, I think they did an impeccable job. The same opinion I have regarding the soundtrack, Michiru Ôshima did a great job in this aspect, having good reviews and is that several themes I consider that are very catchy and more when they have enough instruments that adorn the song. I love movies and musical series and this one was no exception, it exceeded my expectations. For all of the above I would give it a 9/10.

Given Hiiragi Mix es una buena película con una historia bastante decente que vale la pena ver, tiene sus dramas que nunca pueden faltar en este tipo de historia, pero también tiene sus momentos divertidos, lo cual por momentos nos puede sacar una sonrisa. Esta es una buena producción, que además de la historia cuenta como una excelente animación, creo que hicieron un trabajo impecable. La misma opinión tengo referente a la banda sonora, Michiru Ôshima hizo un gran trabajo en este aspecto, teniendo buenas críticas y es que varias los temas considero que son muy pegajosos y más cuando se cuentan con bastantes instrumentos que adornan la canción. Me encantan las películas y series musicales y esta no fue la excepción, sobrepasó mis expectativas. Por lo dicho anteriormente es que le daría un 9/10.

One of my favorite BL animated series is GIVEN. Not only did I like the story and relate with the characters, but I also enjoyed listening to its soundtrack... especially the songs performed by the characters.
A year after they released the series *(2019)*, they also released a movie focusing on the characters Haruki *(bassist)* and Akihiko *(drummer)*.

By the way, GIVEN is their band name and the main characters of the series were Mafuyu (vocalist/guitarist) and Uenoyama (main guitarist).

Last year, a two-part movie was released, but only one is available to watch online at the moment. So yeah... let me talk about ***GIVEN: Hiiragi Mix Part 1***.

From the title itself, the main characters in this film are different. They're not from the band Given, but they're two of Mafuyu's childhood friends... Hiiragi and Shizusumi.

Hiiragi and Shizusumi's band is going to debut, however, their guitarist left the group. Because of this, Hiiragi tried to convince Uenoyama *(his childhood friend's boyfriend)* to be a temporary member of their band.
Although they don't get along well with each other and bicker a lot, it's not a secret how they also respect and admire each other as musicians.

The movie also showed how Hiiragi and Shizusumi's love story unfolds. *(This is actually one of my favorite pairs in the manga, so seeing their scenes in the anime made me happy!)*

Seeing bits and pieces of their childhood is heartwarming... and their chibi versions are so adorable. :) There were also flashbacks of when they formed a band with Yuki, another childhood friend of theirs who was also Mafuyu's ex-boyfriend.

Speaking of Yuki... he had a song that he couldn't complete while he was still alive. And Hiiragi wanted Uenoyama to complete it. *(This is a really crazy thing to do in my opinion... If you watched the series, you'd know how Uenoyama struggled with his feelings towards Mafuyu who's stuck in the past. But I too am curious how the song would sound like.)*

His voice suits this kind of song... and Shizusumi on the drums is just so cool. Lowkey he's looking like a lovechild of Akaashi and Iwaizumi of Haikyuu! --- what's wrong with my brain??? FUJOSHI ALERT!
The movie ended pretty well for Hiiragi, but it was a cliffhanger in terms of other aspects. It's understandable, though... it's a two-part movie and I think the online version for part 2 would come out in the first half of this year... maybe after the Blueray version is released in March.
Anyway, the movie was great as expected. I kind of know the story since I read the manga before, but I also forgot some of the parts... I'm debating whether to read the manga again or just wait for the second part of this film. haha
I want to see GIVEN (band) perform again. I miss Mafuyu's voice...
If you don't mind BL and are interested in music, you should watch this anime. I recommend you watch at least the series first. The first movie and this one aren't that connected, but the songs from that movie are also really good!
This movie got me into the band (or artist) Centimillimental. <3 You should check their songs out, too!

I originally wanted to make the third anime-related post for the [Monthly Quest](https://peakd.com/hive-158489/@theanimerealm/the-anime-realm-quest-for-february-2024)'s first part. However, since it's almost Valentine's Day, I decided to skip it for now and share a romance anime.
There was a phase in my Otaku life when I breathed romance anime and manga. I especially liked ***Toradora***, ***Lovely Complex***, ***Clannad***, ***Clannad: After Story***, ***Kimi no Todoke***, ***YamaNade***, ***Kaichou wa Maid-sama***, ***Ouran HSHC*** and many others.They were so fun to watch and made the teenager and/or young adult me want to fall in love. However, I don't feel as excited watching them now as I'm older.
When it comes to romance, I wanted something deeper, forbidden... something hurtful, tragic even! Maybe because of my own experience? *haha* Just kidding, but jokes are half meant, aren't they? *lol*
I know this genre isn't for everyone, but I'm actually into ***Boy's Love*** and one of my favorites is ***GIVEN***.

In the anime, one of the main characters, Mafuyu had a somewhat dark and depressing past which is connected to a certain guitar he's constantly with. One day, he had an encounter with Uenoyama who criticized him for not taking good care of his guitar.
Mafuyu who was amazed and curious about Uenoyama's knowledge of the instrument started pestering the latter to fix the guitar and teach him how to play. Eventually, Uenoyama gave up and introduced Mafuyu to his band mates, Haruki and Akihiko.

I like every character in this series. They're so adorable despite having their own issues. Mafuyu is such a sweetheart that deserves so much love.

I remember crying a lot when I watched this series and just thinking about the story makes me want to cry again. It's not the kind of depressive cry, but more of a heartwarming one.
This series also introduced me to one of my favorite Japanese musician ***センチミリメンタル*** (Centimillimental). They sang the soundtrack not only of this series but also GIVEN movie which was released in 2020. And oh, there's an upcoming movie this year, too. I'm so excited to watch it and relive my heartbreak once more.
I'll watch the series again soon! I miss them! And I still listen to the soundtrack and even practiced singing Mafuyu's song *Fuyu no Hanashi*. It's such an emotional song that my heart clenches when I listen to it. *Dang!!!! T_T*

Los personajes son entrañables y tienen su peso en la historia de una u otra forma, las relaciones entre ellos también las vi bastante buenas, sabiendo complementarse correctamente; en el apartado romántico pues tendré que esperar a ver cómo continúa la trama ya que todo su trasfondo me pareció correcto y bastante orgánico, hasta bastante enternecedor en varios casos.

En lo que respecta a la música pues la recomiendo muchísimo, incluso si no están interesados en ver el anime, bien me hubiera gustado que hubiera un repertorio mayor para un anime de su género, pero las que están rebosan de bastante calidad.

The anime series of GIVEN which was released in 2019 has given me so much heartache that I still cry when I watch some clips from it. Last year, GIVEN (movie) was released in Japan and I have always wanted to watch it. However, the movie wasn't released online until this year and finally last weekend, I got the chance and courage to watch it.

From the official poster itself, GIVEN fans would know that the movie would focus on Akihiko *(drummer; short-haired guy on the picture)*, Haruki *(bassist: long-haired blond guy)* and Ugetsu *(black-haired guy at the back)*. The two other guys with guitars on their back in the background are Mafuyu and Uenoyama. They're the main characters in the series.
Before I pour my heart out into writing my thoughts and my feelings, I'd like to share the trailer here as well. Please check it out below. There's an English subtitle, so you might have an idea of what the movie was about.

As you may noticed in the trailer the three characters in the movie somehow have a very complicated relationship... be it related to music or love. GIVEN is a BL story that involves people who are very passionate about music. Let's get to know the three main characters. :)

Ugetsu Murata is a famous violinist who is known not only in Japan, but also abroad. He met Akihiko in high school and had a complicated relationship with him since then. They were both playing the violin, but since Ugetsu is somehow a genius at it, there's some conflicted feelings on Akihiko's part. Ugetsu is in love with him, but also doesn't know what he feels exactly.

Akihiko is the drummer of the band, GIVEN. As mentioned earlier, he used to play the violin more. Although he still plays the violin, he tried to play the drums and other instruments as a way of rebellion(?). He's tagged as a "Jack of all trades" since he can do almost anything, but there isn't any particular thing that he stands out at. He loved Ugetsu, but his complicated feelings for Ugetsu and his music is driving him insane that he spends his night wildly... but there's this someone who he wants to appear as a good human to... Haruki.

Haruki is a sweetheart. <3 He's the bassist of GIVEN and is actually pretty much in love with Akihiko. He used to have a girlfriend who is also in another band, but somehow, he fell in love with Akihiko. He considers himself inferior to others and had little self confidence, but I really like this character. I just want to break the fourth wall and hug him so tight.

Have you ever fought a losing battle? Have you ever loved someone you know you shouldn't? Have you ever wanted to give up on your feelings towards someone, but you refuse to because you know it'll irrevocable, and you'll be losing that person forever?
I know, it's crazy complicated and it's too hurtful even just imagining it... but I surely can relate, especially to Ugetsu. In the movie he said to Mafuyu as they were talking about his relationship with Akihiko, "I love him but loving him hurts me. I want to move on, but I can't until he decides to leave me himself. I'm waiting for him to do it." Well, those weren't the exact words, but it was along those lines. He wanted to free himself from his feelings, but instead of moving on by himself, he wants Akihiko to leave him... and only then can he move on.

Immediately after watching the movie, I posted this on my Facebook.

Finally got the chance to watch "GIVEN" (movie)... my impression? 突然、会いたいよ〜🥰🖤 I was able to feel the meaning of the song 夜が明ける more... 🥰🥰🥰 I feel bad for Ugetsu and I can relate to the feeling of wanting to let go but you just can't because the moment you do, it'll absolutely be over. 😭😭😭 なぜGIVENは悲しいですか?😭それでも、とても大好きです〜！ 🥰

突然、会いたいよ〜 (Suddenly, I miss you.) I know it's crazy, but Ugetsu's feelings reflect mine. No matter how hard I try, the moment he sends me a message, all of my feelings come back. Even though it's hopeless, I'm so helpless. I just want him to leave in his own will and move on with his life without me... me we can't cut ties. Especially that 2022 is approaching. I know COVID is still around, but there's a possibility of meeting him again. What's funny is... I can't imagine myself being in a relationship... even with him. I'm content with this feeling of admiring him from afar and reminiscing the times we shared. Am I weird? I bet I am... So when I watched the movie, I cried a lot and I hated myself for doing that.

Good day beautiful people! Ahhh~ I feel tired, but it's OK. I'm still alive. *lol*
I really want to talk about my thoughts about a certain anime which is entitled "GIVEN". But before that, if you are not into "Boy's Love" or if you have a prejudice about it, please feel free to leave this post. :)
As most of my Otaku friends know, I am a FUJOSHI... meaning, I love watching or reading "Boy's Love". I just find it exciting and touching because I have always believed that forbidden love is true love... especially when both parties fight against all odds just to be with each other.
GIVEN is a BL anime, but a tragic one. Well, there are a lot of tragic BL love stories and tragic ones are often more realistic than the "happily ever after" ones. It's sad, though. Everyone has the right to love who they want to love, but not everyone can do it freely without having other people judging them.
Let me show you a clip from the anime which really pulled on my heartstrings.

Mafuyu, the vocalist of the band "Given" used to have a childhood friend who later on became his boyfriend. Mafuyu grew up with an abusive father, so he was already scarred since he was young and the person who stayed by his side and saved him was that boyfriend.
Unfortunately, that boyfriend committed suicide... and Mafuyu was left with the memories of his savior killing himself. There was a part in the clip when Mafuyu asked his boyfriend, "Will you be willing to die for me?". I'm not sure if that's the only reason or his boyfriend had other reasons for committing an act. It wasn't explained in the anime, but the manga version is still ongoing, so it might be explained later in the future.

This is what I thought upon watching the anime. Both Mafuyu and his boyfriend were broken, but they seek for each other to feel whole... Of course, not all people rely on love or on romantic relationships, but for some... love is such a serious thing. It could be a feeling of fulfilment or something that can make them feel like living. I don't know.
After the incident, Mafuyu's life became stagnant. He consistently lived in the past and couldn't feel anything at all. He was numb... he didn't even cry. He couldn't express or let out what he feels because he doesn't know what he feels at all. All that's left was his late boyfriend's broken guitar which he carries every day.

Everything slowly changed after one fateful encounter. In his new school, he met Ritsuka. Ritsuka is a guitarist from an instrumental band and he didn't only fix Mafuyu's broken guitar but also mended his broken heart.
Through Ritsuka, Mafuyu started to feel again. Ritsuka taught him how to play the guitar and invited him to be a part of their band.
Well, it wasn't smooth-sailing at first because Mafuyu is still haunted by the past and Ritsuka also has his own set of problems... their other band members also played a big role in guiding them.
And the performance you saw earlier was the first time Mafuyu expressed himself... his longing for his dead boyfriend, his regrets... everything. I can imagine how Mafuyu really treasured him. I know it's painful for Ritsuka to hear that song, but it was the trigger for Mafuyu to move on and continue living.

It's scary to love and get hurt, but being able to experience it is such a wonderful feeling. It's been a while since I have been romantically in love with someone... yes, I have loved and gotten hurt by the same love. BUT, life goes on. It made me love myself more and appreciate other people around me.
For some, they might need their own "Ritsuka" to be whole again, but I tell you... loving yourself works the same. <3
