  1. Gone With the Wind (1939): an everlasting classic | un clásico eterno@cristiancaicedo957d

One of the most iconic movies of all time Una de las películas más icónicas de todos los tiempos

Although not everyone has seen this film, I am sure that everyone has heard references to it as one of the biggest and best productions in the history of cinema, with a legendary epic and a love story immortalized on the big screen with an elite duo: Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable. But Gone with the Wind is more than that and even though more than eighty years have passed since its release, it's still a great film.

Summarizing the plot of a story like this is a difficult task and not only because of its four hours of duration but also because there are many things to highlight. The film begins in the second half of the 19th century in the South of the United States where we find the O'Hara family, whose eldest daughter Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) emerges as the most beautiful, capricious and selfish young woman in the entire region. All men young and old want to be close to her and crave a little of her attention and although Scarlett feeds off the attention of all these men and enjoys it, deep down what she regrets is not being able to have the love of Ashley (Leslie Howard), who is soon to marry Scarlett's cousin Melanie (played brilliantly by Olivia de Havilland). But in that climate of celebration, joy and potential romances, the Civil War broke out, a war that pitted the Northern States against the Southern States for almost five years, leaving in its wake countless deaths, wounded, widows, orphans and entire cities burned and destroyed. Just before the war breaks out and everyone goes to the front, including Ashley, Scarlett meets Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) a cynical, arrogant and somewhat mysterious man who does not want to participate in the war and who - they cannot know it at that time - will be a frequent presence at crucial moments in the life of Scarlett and her great love, although at first she finds him disgusting and rude.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película

Although the love story between Scarlett and Rhett is one of the highlights of the film, there are also other themes: love and heartbreak, failed marriages, family, the economic crisis after the war, starting over after losing everything and the unbreakable spirit of a woman who does not let herself be defeated and who, even if she falls many times, continues to move forward.

Instead of stopping to recount scenes of some of the many things that happen in those 238 minutes full of drama, I would like to talk a little about other relevant aspects. To begin with, the direction is excellent and although the original director was George Cukor (fired during filming) and Sam Wood directed the last scenes, the greatest workload in this part was done by Victor Flemming, another great of the time who directed the also iconic The Wizard of Oz that same year. Screenplay by Sidney Howard is a highly adapted adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's 1937 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, production design, editing, cinematography, costumes, soundtrack, Gone with the Wind stands out in each of these aspects, and of course in the performances. Not only those of the leading couple but also those of the supporting actors and actresses, two of whom were nominated for an Oscar, with Hattie McDaniel winning for her role as Mammy, the O'Hara maid, becoming the first Afro-descendant in history of cinema to win an Academy Award. I personally liked what Olivia de Havilland did more as Melanie and although I am not a big fan of Clark Gable, I admit that he played a great role. Not to mention Vivien Leigh giving life to one of the most iconic characters on the big screen ever.

    Rhett & Scarlett

But - in my opinion - although there is merit in the performances, there is also great merit in the construction of the characters. It's true that there are some stereotypes, Rhett Butler is as cynical and selfish as Rick is in Casablanca (at least at the beginning), a beautiful leading lady was the hallmark of the era of Ingrid Berman, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Katherine Hepburn (all they were great actresses), but the characters in Gone with the Wind are more complex than the rest and are unpredictable, honest in their contradictions and above all they feel alive. Scarlett O'Hara is a vain, spoiled woman, somewhat superficial when she is young, but she has a character and a strength that helps her keep her family afloat after the war and when after the misery she promises not to starve again no matter what she has to do, you know she will do whatever it takes and the character delivers. However, she is also capable of love, of feeling tenderness, of empathy, but what I liked most about that character was that she was true to herself at all times. Forgetting the social conventions of the time (both that of the story and that of the film's premiere), ignoring the gossip, he was not afraid to till the land, to keep company that were not recommended, to go to a party when she should - according to the rules - stay home to suffer. Scarlett O'Hara is a character that is both stormy and tormented, with the force of a hurricane and a tragic destiny that is impossible to forget. In several ways she is a Madame Bovary, but with greater character.

And the same goes for Rhett Butler. Cynical and arrogant at first, he seems to be a man who always moves with the wind in his favor and who takes everything for his own benefit. But then he shows some altruism, pain, sadness and although he never stops being somewhat cynical, he's capable of having gestures of chivalry and generosity with several people. This makes the relationship between Rhett and Scarlett conflictive, violent, complementary, intermittent, but always intense. And to balance that intensity then there is the faint-hearted Ashley, unable to decide to love Scarlett or stop loving her; and the heart of the film: Melanie. Olivia de Havilland managed, when playing Melanie Hamilton, to project all the goodness and sweetness of a soul that never thought about itself. Scarlett's cousin, married to her first love interest, on the brink of death a couple of times, a volunteer at a military hospital, offended by various gossip, but also helped by someone she least expected, Melanie's character is the soft calm breeze when everything around is stormy. And the best part is that so much kindness, so much generosity, is not implausible because the character of the actress and the character also show how difficult it is sometimes to do the right thing and act from the heart and not from the heat of the moment, anger, jealousy or impotence. That's why, along with Scarlett, Melanie is my other favorite character.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película

It must also be taken into account that at the time the concept of woman as a damsel in distress, as a beauty trophy or as a passive housewife who waits while the man goes to war, tills the land and does everything that is important; and it's in the midst of all those stereotypical conventions that Scarlett O'Hara bursts in with her inexhaustible desire to live, to get what she wants, to love who she wants to love, to be and do what she wants no matter what it costs her and It hurts who hurts. A woman of character who seems indomitable, but who also succumbs to love and who overcomes all adversity, always rising once again. I won't say that she has exemplary behavior because she is often cynical, hypocritical and manipulative, but her determination and bravery must be applauded. And of course Vivien Leigh's performance.

So although I could say a thousand and one more things in favor of Gone with the Wind I feel that nothing will compare to what you yourselves can conclude from seeing it. A historical gem, a legendary epic, a cultural icon and almost four hours of good dramatic, period and romantic cinema, which I recommend seeing to all film buffs regardless of their age or origin. Probably everyone who participated in the film has already passed away, but Gone with the Wind will live and last even beyond us because art and good stories are larger than life itself, how many of you have seen this gem? I read you in the comments.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película

  2. Film review: Gone with the Wind@gooddream1159d

About a week ago I finished reading one of the longest books I have ever read, Gone with the Wind. It was a daunting task at over 1000 pages but I was assured by others that you will not regret it. I did not regret it and consider it to be one of the best books that I have ever read.

While I knew the song and the famous "I don't give a damn" scene from the film, I have actually never seen it in my entire life. I was excited to see how one of my favorite books of all time was going to be represented on screen and I also recall that it was widely loved when it was originally released way back when. So yeah, I was pretty stoked about being able to finally watch this after spending 3 weeks on reading the book.

    image.png src

I was curious how they were going to represent a lot of what I read about in the book because while the story mostly focuses on Scarlett O'Hara's coming of age and love story, there is a lot of war and explosions and fires that were probably pretty difficult to pull off back in 1939. Well after watching it I now know how they were able to pull a lot of that off, they did it by not showing it on screen but instead just having a bunch of words keep you up to date on what the hell was going on.

    image.png src

The version I watched was the remastered original theater presentation and this included a rather long overture that I would imagine would have indicated that the people in the cinema who were i dunno, lurking around at concessions that it was time to get to their seats. There is also another rather long intermission. So I guess this added some period authenticity to the entire experience. The audio was also "crackly" in bits and I guess this was just the way things were back then.

They did skip a lot of the lead in story as far as introducing minor characters from the book is concerned and this was just fine with me. Many of the minor characters didn't really have much impact on the overall story anyway and instead they focused on the 4 main characters in Scarlet, Rhett, Melody, and Ashley. If you haven't read the book or seen the film then these names will be meaningless to you of course.

    image.png src

Even with no knowledge of the film though you are probably at lease familiar with these two and that is what most of the story focuses on. That's Scarlet O'Hara and Rhett Butler.

This film won a total of 10 Academy Awards and that's quite the accomplishment. One of these awards for "Mammy", played by Hattie McDaniel was won in the Best Supporting Actress category and as it turns out she was almost not allowed to attend the ceremony because of segregation laws that existed at the time.

    image.png src

The fact that she was going to win somehow leaked and her attendance was necessary. However, she was not allowed to sit with her white costars and instead was seated far off to the side at a table on her own with a minder and her white agent. Wow how things have changed since then huh?

The film won basically everything other than best editing and best visual effects and I can only imagine what the criteria was for visual effects in 1939 seeing as how almost nothing could be replicated accurately and CGI wasn't something that anyone could even fathom back then.

So now let's get into the nitty gritty of the review by me. This film is rather boring and yes, I realize that this has everything to do with the times that we now live in and the attention spans of most people including me. It took me 3 sittings to get through the entire thing and especially since I already knew the entire story, I was kind of happy with how some of it was represented but not so happy about others. They had to skip a ton of material because an epically long novel like this one was difficult to represent on screen even with a 4-hour runtime.

I can't really say that you absolutely must watch this movie because I don't think that most people would be able to endure the length or stay interested in it long enough to make it through. I think it might be a bit more entertaining to people who aren't already familiar with the story and that might be part of the reason why I got a bit bored seeing as how I knew everything about it since I had only recently finished the book.

So I would say that if you want to see a piece of history and have a lot of patience then go ahead and give this a watch. It shows a lot of things about the time period and how big the racial divide was in 1939 even though this film is representing events before, during, and after the American Civil War in the 1860's. The transition of blacks from being slaves to being free is represented pretty nicely in the film, although I don't think that this was an intentional aspect of it by the creators seeing as how the USA was still extremely segregated at the time of the film's release. If anything, the film (and the book) kind of attempts to show that blacks were better off as slaves than they were free, which seems a completely bizarre and taboo thing to even contemplate these days but may have been a widely held belief back in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The world being the nutso place that it is today, this film has actually been removed from most streaming services including HBO Max because it is "racist." The only way I know of to get a hold of it would be to get it from a torrent service, which I am certain most people are familiar with.

    image.png src

Basically, I am glad that I watched it but if I was offered a free ticket to some grand event where they would re-screen the film for all of us, I would probably turn the invitation down because ideas of what is entertaining has changed so much since the time this film was released. I was bored, basically but a lot of this probably had to do with the fact that I already knew exactly what was going to happen.

    • HATTIE McDANIEL: In the role of Mammy, maid to the O'Hara family.

    • CAMMIE KINGAs Bonnie Blue, daughter of Scarlett and Rhett, died while trying to jump a fence on her pony.

    Personal Opinion

Without a doubt it is an extraordinary Super Production where a spoiled, spoiled girl, accustomed to having everything she wanted, becomes a manipulative woman, and strong in the face of adversity. I loved the performance of Vivien Leigh and Hattie McDaniel they were masterful, no wonder they won the Oscar, although I would have given one to Clark Gable and Olivia de Havilland they were also great. I was reading that in order to select the woman who would play Scarlett they interviewed 1,400 women. This story tells the story of what Scarlett had to go through in order to get her family's land back on its feet. The costumes were designed by Walter Plunkett who designed 50,000 pieces for the cast. I was fascinated by the fact that it was a movie inspired by the year 1861, where women were submissive, did not have much participation in the decisions that were made and Scarlett broke the mold. I loved the line that Scarlett says at the end of the first part of the movie that even if I have to kill, cheat or steal, as God is my witness, I will never go hungry again. Comment me, see you next time.
