   El sexo y su importancia en la vida de las personas ha sido uno de los grandes temas del cine. Abundan las películas de temática sexual, en las que la cámara nos ha llevado a ser testigos de problemáticas diversas, algunas extremadamente enrevesadas y complejas. Este es un campo realmente inagotable en el que de vez en cuando los cineastas nos dejan propuestas originales.

   La película Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022), de la directora australiana Sophie Hyde, se inscribe en estos temas de la sexualidad.

   La historia comienza cuando Susan Robin (Emma Thompson), una maestra jubilada, viuda, en el otoño de su vida, decide darse un chance para explorar su sexualidad. El gran reto que se ha planteado Susan es experimentar un orgasmo, algo que no ha conocido nunca, ni de joven ni durante los treinta y un años que duró su matrimonio, en los que se entregó pasiva y resignadamente a satisfacer la necesidad de su esposo.

   Para lograr su cometido Susan busca en internet un servicio de compañías. Usa el seudónimo de Nancy para contratarr a un apuesto joven llamado Leo grande (Daryl McCormack), quien tiene una de las tarifas más caras del sitio y ofrece sus servicios por horas.

   

   Durante la primera cita las cosas no funcionan bien. Nancy es presa de una gran ansiedad mientras espera la llegada de Leo. Le asaltan todo tipo de dudas. No se siente a gusto con su cuerpo, piensa que ya no es una mujer atractiva. Además, no puede sacar de su mente el mundo de prejuicios que ha tenido desde niña y que le han impedido entregarse al disfrute sexual con naturalidad, libertad y sin culpa.

   Más de una vez le dice a Leo que no puede seguir adelante, que está bien, que su arrebato fue una idea loca sin final feliz. Pero el muchacho se revela como un hombre muy comprensivo, muy maduro, como un gran conocedor de la psicología humana. A cada duda de Nancy le responde con palabras de aliento. Al final logran consumar una unión medianamente placentera, pero para Nancy se mantiene el misterio de lo que es tener un orgasmo…

   En las citas siguientes las cosas mejoran, Nancy ha superado mucho de sus bloqueos. Sin embargo, comienza a sentir curiosidad por conocer más sobre la vida de Leo, por saber quién es el muchacho en realidad.

   Esto le añade mucha tensión a los encuentros porque para Leo el tema del anonimato es fundamental, no tiene interés en revelar ningún detalle de su vida privada, siente que la mujer está cambiando las reglas del juego…

   Luego de varias citas al final Nancy lograra sus propósitos y en el camino no dejará ileso a Leo, hará que él también se confronte con sus propios problemas existenciales… Algo de ganancia quedará en cada uno…

   

   La película me gustó, me pareció realista, sincera y bien lograda. En esta oportunidad la búsqueda de la gratificación sexual se convierte en un viaje interior en el que los protagonistas logran conocerse a sí mismos.

   Nancy y Leo son personas que de algún modo se parecen. Ambos han sufrido por los condicionamientos sociales. Y aunque entre los dos hay una considerable distancia cronológica, Leo pudiera ser hijo de Nancy, los prejuicios que han sentido son los mismos. La sociedad es lenta para ampliar la mirada en el tema sexual.

   Uno de los temas que explora el film es la aceptación del cuerpo. Durante la mayor parte de su vida Nancy ha estado inconforme con su cuerpo, ha construido una imagen de ella en la que abundan los detalles negativos. La única parte que reconoce como medianamente agradable son sus pantorrillas, de resto, a sus ojos, todo lo demás es motivo de crítica.

   Es en los encuentro con Leo donde toma conciencia de lo dura que ha sido con sus juicios. Cada cita la va reconciliando con otra manera de verse, menos crítica, más ecuánime, y donde va fortaleciendo notablemente su estima personal. Al final logra aceptarse tal cuál es…

   Es muy fácil que muchas personas se sientan identificadas con esta problemática, la dificultad para la aceptación del cuerpo suele ser un problema muy común, sobre todo en este tiempo donde los estándares de belleza son estrictos. Nadie está a salvo de vivir estos conflictos surgidos entre lo que se es y los modelos que circulan por los medios, pero son las personas de edad madura las que pueden sentirse peor.

   

   Un aspecto sobresaliente en la película son las actuaciones. Emma Thompson siempre me ha parecido una gran actriz, es capaz de darles vida a diferentes personajes, entre las actuaciones que me han gustado de ella está la interpretación que hizo de un ama de llaves en la película The Remains of the Day , de 1993, donde compartió protagonismo con Anthony Hopkins , el jefe de los mayordomos.

   En esta oportunidad su interpretación de Nancy es memorable, a lo largo de la película nos va metiendo en los conflictos de una mujer que lucha por encontrarse, y que en vez de rendirse al paso del tiempo aprovecha su condición de mujer madura para resolver las cuentas pendientes en lo concerniente con su sexualidad.

   La señora Thompson ha declarado en las promociones de la película, que el papel de Nancy ha sido uno de los más difíciles de su carrera. Dejar que el público viera tal cual es, en su desnudez total, su cuerpo de sexagenaria le representó un gran reto.

   También estuvo muy bien Daryl McCormack, un joven actor irlandés al que no conocía. Su interpretación de Leo Grande es sobresaliente. Acá nos deja un modelo muy distinto al estereotipo que tenemos de los trabajadores masculinos de la industria del sexo. Leo no se limita a ser una máquina sexual, es una persona muy pendiente del sentimiento ajeno, sensible y comprensivo de las limitaciones de los demás…

   Mientras veía el film pensaba en un dicho popular que puede resumir muy bien lo planteado en la película: Nunca es tarde cuando la dicha es buena…

   Si les gustan los dramas con un toque de comedia, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, puede ser su película. Se las recomiendo.

   This adds a lot of tension to the meetings because for Leo the issue of anonymity is fundamental, he has no interest in revealing any details of his private life, he feels that the woman is changing the rules of the game...

   After several dates, Nancy will finally achieve her goals and on the way she will not leave Leo unscathed, she will also make him confront his own existential problems... Each one will have something to gain...

   

   I liked the film, I found it realistic, sincere and well done. In this opportunity the search for sexual gratification becomes an inner journey in which the protagonists get to know themselves.

   Nancy and Leo are people who are somehow similar. Both have suffered from social conditioning. And although there is a considerable chronological distance between the two, Leo could be Nancy's son, the prejudices they have felt are the same. Society is slow to broaden its view on sexual matters.

   One of the themes the film explores is body acceptance. For most of her life Nancy has been dissatisfied with her body, she has constructed an image of it in which negative details abound. The only part she recognizes as moderately pleasing are her calves, otherwise, in her eyes, everything else is cause for criticism.

   It is in the meetings with Leo that she becomes aware of how harsh she has been with her judgments. Each appointment reconciles her with another way of seeing herself, less critical, more equanimous, and where she strengthens her personal esteem. In the end, she manages to accept herself as she is...

   It is very easy for many people to feel identified with this problem, the difficulty to accept the body is usually a very common problem, especially in this time where beauty standards are strict.    A standout aspect of the film is the performances. Emma Thompson has always seemed to me a great actress, she is able to give life to different characters, among the performances that I have liked her is the interpretation she made of a housekeeper in the 1993 film The Remains of the Day, where she shared the lead role with Anthony Hopkins, the head of the butlers.

   La actuación de Emma Thompson sin duda no deja de sorprender y es que hizo un buen trabajo en este film, al igual que su guapo compañero Daryl McCormack. En cuánto al guión me parece que fue bastante natural y la química entre ambos fue buena.

   Pero lamentablemente fue bastante aburrida, se supone que forma parte del género de comedia pero está muy alejada de eso. Solo dura 1h 37 min pero la sentí mucho más larga, estos encuentros entre ambos fueron básicamente solo hablar a excepción de algunas cosas que pasaron y la escena final que es dónde ella logra alcanzar el placer, y no es que esperaba ese clase de acción para que fuera entretenida, sino que siento que alargaron demasiado la trama.

   Sin duda ella es la típica mujer frustrada e insatisfecha que nunca logró sentir placer al estar en un matrimonio infeliz que es el caso de muchas mujeres de esa época, y por otro lado Leo es un prostituto muy bueno en su trabajo que también hace de psicólogo. De este film no hay mucho que destacar o hablar más que de las conversaciones que ambos tuvieron y que pueden ser percibidas de diferentes maneras por el público.

   Esperaba más, y no es que sea una experta o demasiado exigente jajajaj, es que de verdad fue bastante aburrida y la trama no terminó de atraparme. Sin embargo, ví demasiadas buenas críticas pero más enfocadas hacia el hecho de que Emma Thompson fuera la protagonista, lo que me hace preguntarme, si hubieran sido protagonistas menos conocidos ¿hubieran pensado lo mismo?

   This may all be a subtle, very subtle little touch to talk about this film that is a little, a little strange. Yesterday I decided to log on to Netflix, visualize what the trends were and selected one of them to watch. I thought at first that it would be a plot full of social prejudices, but the truth is: No. Everything ended up concentrated in a hotel room where the protagonists told each other their problems, and thus fell each one to their desires.

Ayer decidí entrar a Netflix, visualizar cuáles eran las tendencias y seleccioné una de ellas para verla. Pensé en principio que se trataría de una trama llena de prejuicios sociales, pero la verdad es que: No. Todo terminó concentrado en una habitación de un hotel en donde los protagonistas se contaron sus problemas, y así cayeron cada uno ante sus deseos.

   Hay una frase que siempre me han dicho mis padres, a menudo debemos dar para no tener que buscar nada en la calle. Ellos se refieren a ser atentos, pero también específicamente al tema de ser atento a la hora de tener relaciones sexuales con tu pareja. Hay que tener mucha percepción con este tema. Existen necesidades fisiológicas, amorosas y sobre todo humanas que deben cubrirse y evitar la monotonía.

   ¿Por qué acoto esto? Sencillo, este film evoca muy bien ese hecho de buscar en la calle lo que no existe en tu casa o mejor dicha recámara o cama. Lo que hace realmente potencial su argumento es la carencia de afecto y el amplio deseo sexual de la protagonista, que en toda su vida ha seguido las normas sociales. ¡Es una profesora! De esas que les decía a sus alumnos sin ningún tabú: Meretriz, pero ya saben en un tono más ofensivo.

   Nancy Stokes es interpretada por la actriz Emma Thompson, y muestra que el tabú social de acostarse con un hombre más joven puede romper ese estereotipo. Todo se convierte en placer para ella, pero también en una ronda profunda de comprensión mutua en cada sesión donde lo único que ella desea es: Sexo Duro. Fui muy explícito jajajaja.

   Muchos seres humanos ven esto con desdén (Me refiero al sexo). Algo que existe, algo que forma parte de la vida y demuestra propia forma natural. A mí también me costaba un poco hablar o esgrimir un punto de vista sobre el tema, sin embargo, con el tiempo puedes escribir o plantear tu punto de vista sin trastocar temas que desprendan una ofensa. Cuando estudiaba bachillerato mi profesora de ciencias de la salud era muy explícita, muy sincera, pero sobre todas las cosas expresó el hecho de por qué cuidarse. Esto pensando un poco sobre anécdotas de la vida, nunca olvidaré la escena que esa profesora hizo sentada en la mesa. Ambos protagonistas se miran al espejo, un gigoló con un carisma envolvente, pero con problemas familiares y una mujer que perdió su juventud sin vivir las experiencias que anhelaba. La verdad es que debían ser exaltados para demostrar con precisión las dolencias y el arrebato de una mujer que pagó por sexo a un gigoló. Nada opera sin razón, todo tiene un propósito en sí mismo. Por cierto, la tercera actriz es Isabella Laughland como Becky. Una inesperada camarera que te hará reír por su forma directa de decir las cosas… También puede que ella se deje llevar por el deseo. Claro, imaginativamente.

   ¿Cuál es el secreto que cada uno de los personajes esconde? ¿Qué clase de sexo desea Nancy Stokes al contratar un gigoló? ¿Por qué ambos protagonistas se miran al espejo? ¿Existe culpa en ellos? ¿Cuál es el motivo de jugar con lo prohibido después de saber que envejeciste? ¿Qué esconde Leo Grande? Without more to add prepare your money that I am about to provide you with a service.

   The construction of the world is simple being that in most of the film everything takes place within the same room that does not have major changes throughout the film, however despite its simplicity it seeks to demonstrate a point about one of its characters, which achieves in a good way and gives meaning to the context.

   The plot tries to appeal to the most reflective side of the viewer, since it deals with interesting topics such as: sexual dissatisfaction, complexes with the physical, overcoming problems, and, in general, focuses mostly on developing the different problems with which their characters carry. While the above sounds nice, the reality is that it becomes tedious quickly since these talks end up making the film not for anyone reducing the narrative to pure conversations, being that in some cases it simply exposes something that is never given resolution or really contributes anything reducing to worthless information. It could be said that the film invites reflection because it touches on the issue of sex workers, however this is a fallacy since there is only a discourse on the advantages and needs that can be had to resort to these, it does not present opposition arguments to generate that debate that supposedly has and thus cause the viewer to question that issue.

   La trama intenta apela por el lado más reflexivo del espectador, puesto que la misma trata temas interesantes tales como: La insatisfacción sexual, los complejos con el físico, la superación de problemas, y, en general, se enfoca mayormente en ir desarrollando los diferentes problemas con los que cargan sus personajes. Si bien lo anterior suena lindo la realidad es que se vuelve tedioso rápidamente puesto que dichas charlas terminan haciendo que el filme no sea para cualquier persona reduciendo la narrativa a puras conversaciones, siendo que en algunos casos sencillamente se expone algo a lo que nunca se le da resolución ni aporta realmente nada reduciendose a información sin valor. Se podría decir que el filme invita a la reflexión debido a que toca el tema de los trabajadores sexuales, sin embargo esto es una falacia ya que solo existe un discurso sobre las ventajas y las necesidades que se pueden tener para recurrir a estos, no presenta argumentos de oposición para generar ese debate que supuestamente tiene y así provocar que el espectador se cuestione dicho tema.

   The characters are interesting, have a good synergy and generally relate in a good way because they make a pleasant contrast both for the different lives they have, as for their ages and their ideologies. The drawback I see here is the fact that he pretends that he gives the same importance to both more this taken to reality is a lie, Nancy and her insecurities are given greater prominence, obviously Leo also has a certain amount of prominence but is not active as a main character is supposed to be, their problems are more interesting because it leads to a problem with their family link and even a lack of honest communication; however the above is overshadowed by Nancy's more superficial problems, I am not saying that these are not important although without a doubt these have no point of comparison. This leaves us a lady with an existential crisis for feeling that she has not enjoyed her life and a young boy who lives a lie, interesting points that do not have a very satisfactory development to say.

   Los personajes resultan interesantes, tienen una buena sinergia y en general se relacionan de buena forma debido a que hacen un contraste agradable tanto por las vidas diferentes que tienen, como por sus edades y sus ideologías. El inconveniente que veo aquí es el hecho de que finge que le da la misma importancia a ambos más esto llevado a la realidad es mentira, se le da mayor protagonismo a Nancy y a sus inseguridades, evidentemente Leo también tiene cierta cantidad de protagonismo pero no es activo como se supone que debería ser un personaje principal, sus problemas resultan más interesantes debido a que conlleva a una problemática con su nexo familiar e incluso una carencia de comunicación honesta; sin embargo lo anterior es eclipsado por los problemas más superficiales de Nancy, no digo que estos no sean importantes aunque sin lugar a dudas estos no tienen punto de comparación. Esto nos deja a una señora con una crisis existencial por sentir que no ha disfrutado de su vida y a un chico joven que vive una mentira, puntos interesantes que no tienen un desarrollo muy satisfactorio que digamos.

   
   

   

   
   

   Good Luck to you, Leo Grande results in a particular film that although it deals with interesting topics does not do something really remarkable with them by giving simple resolutions, the problem is that it extends more with elements that do not contribute anything and are only boring. That is why I give it 3.5 stars out of 7, it is not a terrible movie but undoubtedly more than one will be bored by the extensive talks it contains being that much of that verbiage will not have an important weight in the plot.

   Good Luck to you, Leo Grande resulta en un filme particular que si bien trata temas interesantes no hace algo realmente destacable con ellos al darle resoluciones simples, el problema es que se extiende de más con elementos que no aportan nada y solo son aburridos. Es por ello que le doy 3.5 estrellas de 7, no es una terrible película pero sin dudas a más de uno le aburrirá las charlas tan extensas que contiene siendo que mucha de esa palabrería no tendrá un peso importante en la trama.
